Viking of the Year

Do you know of someone or perhaps a few people in your Lodge who deserve to be the Viking of the year? It's never too early to start thinking about the convention in 2019. Also if you submitted someone before you can resubmit them for Viking of the year again.

September 2017 Page 3

We are looking forward to this, as this change will make it possible for us to grow- with this change we will no longer have to abide by many of the laws of the states. We will then be considered a FRATERNAL SOCIETY. We will no longer be a Fraternal Benefit Society. In closing, I would appreciate ALL of your help in supporting our Scholarships- Language Camp and Viking of the Year programs. “Happiness is not a destination. I.O.V. on the WEB!

CAN YOU IDENTIFY?

No one correctly identified. Svante Arrhenius was a renowned Swedish scientist who is regarded as father of modern day physical chemistry. Swedish scientist Svante August Arrhenius remains one of the most influential scientists in history and although it is true that he started off as a physicist; he ended up being more influential as a researcher par excellence on chemistry. His major projects were related to chemistry and Arrhenius was also one of the leading purveyors of what is now known as physical chemistry. Arrhenius was Sweden’s leading scientist

throughout his life and his papers on the greenhouse effect is regarded as a benchmark study on climate change in the 21st century. Other than his study on the greenhouse effect; he is also famous for his work on the theory of electrolytic dissociation. Arrhenius is often referred to as a physical chemist in light of the sort of studies he conducted. Read more at http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/svante-arrhenius-6411.php#BwHg1iym1VGzLVBX.99

Concordia Language CampHej Då! Hälsningar! Hei! Hyvää Päivää! Hello!

Do you have a Junior Viking that is interested in learning a Scandinavian language? Well, we have the funds and location. The Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota offers a complete immersion program for students to learn the language, customs and have fun. This is a great program and if you have talked to any former campers they have lots of good things to say about it. There is also a possibility of High School language credits available to those wishing to pursue it. I know this is still summer 2017, but it’s not too early to start planning for 2018. You can submit your child’s name to our committee anytime between now and February 1, 2018. First time campers have first preference but even if they have gone before you can submit their names again. We will have more information in the next Journal, or if you have any questions before that you can contact anyone of us from the committee. Tack så mycket! E. Connecticut Burn Foundation Benefactors’ Day

The Connecticut Burns Foundation cordially invited members of Stenkil Lodge to attend Benefactors’ Day July 22nd 2017 and represent the Independent Order of Vikings. Members Thor Jeffry, Tom Jennsen, and Chief Jim McRae were welcomed like old friends and taken on a tour of the camp by one of the Board of Directors. The enthusiasm and pure joy shown by the campers is contagious. After activities everyone lines up at the mess hall for lunch, as lunch is winding down the campers are winding up. They have Mail Call with great pomp and circumstance and a tremendous amount noise they bring in the mail box, this year it was decorated as a sheep (why?) and they read random post cards from the campers that express thoughts from the campers, always entertaining. In a new twist campers passed amongst the visitors and handed out post cards from campers on why they like camp. We received ours from Rowen, Keith, Joshua and Jackie. Campers of all ages sending post cards. There are a lot of changes happening at camp including a new look to their website find out more at [email protected].

Burn Camp News First up is the Great Lakes Burn Camp in Mattawan, MI because it is the closest to home, home being Linne #57 in Muskegon. Recently we held the annual benefit “Tee off Against Burns” at Ravenna Creek Golf Course. Linne #57 has teamed up with Michigan Firefighters Local 370 to sponsor this outing.of Linne #57. There are way too many names of people who work on this project to remember so I say thank you to you all. You know who you are and you know what you do. The one person I will name is Mike Longnecker. Mike is the head of the Great Lakes Burn Camp. He drove over for the day to golf, mingle and accept checks for $11,400 from Local 370 and Linne #57. This did not include income from this outing or a dinner and other functions that are planned. On to the Illinois Burn Camp. The Illinois Burn Camp is named “Camp I Am Me” and was held June 18-24. It is in Ingleside at the YMCA Camp Duncan. Over 100 volunteers kept everything running smoothly. Over 60 campers, 20% of them first timers, forgot everything but meeting new friends and enjoying themselves for the week. Now to Connecticut. The Arthur C. Luf Burn Camp is found in the woods of Milford. Like all the camps it is manned by dozens of volunteers who help the kids forget their problems. Also with all the camps, many of the counselors are former campers who want to give something back. There is not enough space here to do justice to these 3 camps. To get a better picture I urge you to go to their websites. Michigan: www.greatlakesburncamp.org Illinois: www.ifsa.org Connecticut: www.ctburnsfoundation.org

SIGURD LODGE #30Kenosha, Wisconsin

Hi all, Sorry that I missed putting an article in the last two journals, one was my own fault the other I don’t know whose it was but it was somebody’s. Anyway back in April we had another successful Swedish Pancakes and Sausage Breakfast. Thanks to all that helped out especially those that donated to the bake sale. We had a record amount taken in. Also in April Dee and I attended the Executive Council meeting in Batavia. Thanks to the members of Ring Lodge for putting on the lunch after the meeting and the meal for Saturday night. We had a very good meeting such as a discussion on exiting the insurance business and other numerous items. In May, we lost another of our members. Ed Turner passed away on his 88th birthday. Ed was the one who made sure none of the workers got dehydrated at the breakfasts. Our sympathy is extended to his wife Alice and the rest of his family. In June, I attended the Grand lodge convention in Muskegon. All I can say for those of you who weren’t able to attend it you missed one heck of a great time. The food was fantastic, the entertainment was great, the drinks were awful (awful good). I would like to congratulate Bill Schaefer on being elected as our new Grand Chief. I know he inherited a lot of business to be taken care of but I’m sure he will do a great job. Congratulations to Mindy Worden on being elected as Vice Grand Chief and all the others elected or reelected to their positions. Also thanks to Junior Past Grand Chief Ralph Beck for the three plus years that he served as the Grand Chief. I would also like to thank Roy James McRae for his time that he served on the Executive Council. Finally I would like to thank the members of Linne Lodge for all the hard work they did in making this one great convention. Thanks also to all for supporting me on my re-election to the Executive Council. Looking forward to our next convention in 2019 in Jamestown, NY. I’m sure our Grand Chief will have something in his column about dissolving the life insurance so will not bore you with that. As of this writing we only meet on the first Thursday of the month but starting in October we will be meeting the first and third Thursday. Don’t forget our next SWEDISH PANCAKES AND SAUSAGE BREAKFAST is November 5th from 8:00 am to noon. Don’t forget to bring something for the bake sale and we need your HELP. Rod Ottum, Chief

Two new display and storage cabinets were recently built finished and installed in our main Lodge Room. The cabinets were built by Brother Tony Bex (retired general contractor). The glass doors were from a turn of the cen-tury old house in Batavia and the old Geneva City Hall. They were finished by Brother Gordy Carlson (retired painter and teacher at the painters union hall). Excellent job by the Brother Vikings.

Thanks Guys,Chief Larry Anderson

Brother and Sister Vikings. Ring Lodge #18 Batavia Illinois once again participated in the annual city wide garage sale the first weekend in May. It was a success once again netting us right at $1300. The chairmen of this event were once again Chief Larry Anderson and Vice Chief John Spang. Many hours of preparation go into making this event a success. Thanks to all our members who helped out and or donated items. Special thanks to Brother Ron Link who donated a lot and also took care of delivering all unsold items to the local Salvation Army and Goodwill.

LINNE LODGE NO. 57Muskegon, MI

I hope everyone is having a summer as beautiful as we are having in Muskegon. Like the three bears “not too hot, not too cold, just right.” May started with an excellent Bread Bowl with Corned Beef and Potato soup dinner. The soup was so hearty it was more like a stew, fantastic. The next day was spent assembling our new deck furniture. It raised the question “How many Vikings does it take to put together deck furniture.” The following Thursday we had the most beautiful party of the year, the Mother and Daughter Dinner. Ladies of all ages attended. The food prepared by one of our resident chefs, Ed Peabody, was as always super. More than one hundred and seventy ladies attended. The dinner was hosted by Vice Chief Faisel and Marsha Abdelkader. Every year, two of our members, who are retired Postal workers, have a canned food drive and Chicago Style Hot Dog Dinner. “Cricket” Czarny and Colleen Thorn work extremely hard to make this event is a success. Judy Bisson hosted a Spring Flowers steak fry. Judy hosts several steak fries throughout the year, and always does a superior job. The Senior Dinner is the last big dinner of May and it is always well attended. This is a great opportunity for some of members to get out earlier in the day and see many of their brother and sister Vikings. June was the busiest month we have had in a long time. The month started with the annual Pub Pedal which yearly draws around 1,000 bicyclists. Food and drinks were available to members and friends and with an open liquor license for the day everyone had the chance to enjoy the day. A few days later we had Pam Lindback’s always popular Hot Pork Sandwich dinner. I can attest to how delicious the pork was. This dinner was the beginning of four nights of fantastic food and the kickoff of the 2017 Convention. The fact that it was Midsommar was heightened by the excitement of hosting the National Convention and election of

the next Grand Chief. We were very proud to install our own Bill Schaefer as the next Grand Chief. As a newly elected delegate it was interesting to see the process in action. Our next night’s offering was a Shish-Kabob dinner hosted by Colleen Thorn and former Viking of the Year Helane Bergklint. The preparation is time-consuming, but the result worth it. The next evening, we were treated to a “Grill’n & Chill’n” steak fry. This dinner was hosted by Vice Chief Faisel Abdelkader and his better half Marsha. This dinner is always enjoyable since members and guests get to gather around our 32-square foot grill to prepare their steak to their liking. The Grand Banquet was a spectacular party with homemade offerings. The following treats were offered: Lax Soppa (fish soup), Skagenrota (toast skagen), Smorbrod (open-faced sandwichs), Svenska Kottbullar (Swedish meatballs), Potatis Kory (potato sausage), Ugusbakad Skinka (baked ham), Lax (salmon), Sill (herring), Janssons Frestelse (Janssons temptation potato casserole), Farskpotatis (new potatoes), Risgynsgrot Och Frukt Soppa (rice pudding and fruit soup), Snabb Jordgubbstarta (strawberry Midsommar cake), Svensk Kaffe Brod (coffee bread), and Smakakor (cookies.) The Grand Banquet was prepared by chair Britt Hichue, who has chaired this banquet for more than 20 years, and co-chair Mary Hendon along with a dedicated crew. Great parties have to have great entertainment and we had superior entertainment. Our Invandrarna singers under the direction of Dave Wikman treated us to nice selection of traditional Scandanavian music. Of course, an undertaking of this magnitude requires great leadership. Our “triple threat” to organize, oversee, and orchestrate a multiple day event like this one was Chris Grennell, Peggy Schaefer, and Marsha Abdelkader.

Linne Lodge No. 57 Continued From Page 9 One week removed from the Convention was the annual “All-you- can- eat” Shrimp Boil. This dinner under the direction of chairs Paul and Kris Prentice and Tom and Char Richardson is always a sellout. For over 20 years they have treated us to huge and perfectly prepared shrimp. This year they served 365 pounds of shrimp to about 300 people. Obviously, this party had a large and very efficient support crew. After a month of fantastic food, it seemed a visual treat was in order. Vike Time V filled the bill. In addition to a picnic atmosphere, it featured vintage and custom cars, motorcycles and motor vehicles. It was a sight to behold. Each year three of our members; Bob Grinnell, Dewey Bringedahl, and Bill Schaefer, in partnership with two representatives Mark Taylor and Brad VandenBerg from Firefighter’s Local 370 (who are also Lodge members) organized a golf outing to raise money for the Great Lakes Burn Camp. This last year they raised several thousand dollars to donate to the burn camp.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the fantastic job that our funeral committee does after each funeral. They organize and run a very nice luncheon for the family and friends under the direction of Peggy Schaefer. This year’s scholarship winners of $1,500 each were announced by Scholarship Chair Mary Hendon. They were Cameron Beisel, Kameron Butler, Timothy Chick, Andrea DePouw, Alec McNarland,Brandon Meinders, Nathan Prell, Madeline Schillaci, and Elli Stuk. The last party of this edition was the Country Western Dinner & Dance expertly run by Carol & Gordon Fethke and Carol & Joe Richmond. My on the scene source told me the food was fantastic and the crowd was a sellout and everyone appeared to be having a great time. Have a great fall, Mike Hendon, Past Chief, Linne’ Lodge #57

A time of celebration and thankfulness was had as Viking Chief Jane Fosberg welcomed members who achieved 25/50 years membership in the local Viking Ingjald Lodge. At a recent reception at the Viking Lake Park facility honoring these long time members Chief Fosberg offered words of congratulation and thanks. Each honored recipient was given a lapel pin denoting his or her years of membership. Chief Fosberg was assisted by members of the IOV Executive Council: Past Grand Chief William Peterson, I.O.V. Vice Chief Mindy Worden, and Executive Council members Bryan Nelson, and Robert Greenwald. Recent improvements in the Lake Park facility were laudable and drew much praise. Among the recent improvements are: completing the renovation of the large parking lot, new cement entrance and drainage, new deck furniture, replacement of lakeside patio, kitchen lighting and renovation, playground maintenance, and most recently the addition of a beautiful custom built fire pit. Members and guests will be able to enjoy the newly purchased furniture as they sit around the fire pit and look out over Chautauqua Lake. Chief Fosberg reiterated that none these improvements would be possible without the support of Viking members and Viking inner groups such as: Marina, Boat Club, Viking Trailer Association, and Past Chiefs Club. The evening concluded with refreshments served by the Past Chiefs Club.

Viking Picture Story

There is an old proverb that a picture is worth a thousand words---this is most certainly true for the activity at Ingjald Lodge’s Lake Park. The following pictures tell our Viking summer story: our new fire pit and furniture, July 4th patriotic 31 golf cart parade, annual chicken barbecue sponsored by Past Chiefs Club, new entry way, refurbished cement patio, people playing corn hole game, and the ever popular children playing in the sand along beautiful Chautauqua Lake. WHAT A STORY!

Vikings Aid UCAN Ministry

The Jamestown Viking Lodge has donated $250 to assist the UCAN (United Christian Advocacy Network) ministry housed in the former Rescue Mission building. Viking Chief Jane Fosberg is pictured giving the donation to UCAN Program Director Scott Linden and Intake Director Jon Bogue. The UCAN ministry provides a transitional ministry to assist those in need to successfully reenter society. The program has only been in existence since April but has already experienced success. It was explained by the UCAN Staff to Chief Fosberg that there are several stages to the program. The first stage being to provide food and housing, the second to develop a plan of help, and the third stage to refer those in need to programs and places to get needed help. Chief Fosberg stated that the local Viking Lodge was glad to assist this most worthy community program and that it was consistent with the International Order of Vikings philosophy of being community involved and helping those in need.
