Go farther on a gallon of gasAs much as we'd like to hope, lower gas

prices aren't likely here to stay. But withprices lower than they have been in awhile-and especially when they really start to riseagain-here are some tips to help you savegas.

Gettin' in tune: Keeping your car inproper running condition is vital to gettinggood gas mileage and saving money, somake sure your engine is tuned up.Especially crucial under the hood are thespark plugs. Are they firing correctly? Onethat isn't can cost you as much as 30% infuel efficiency. All thumbs? You can stillreplace your own air filter and improveyour gas mileage up to 10%. Check the fil-ter periodically for the things that can clogit-dirt, dust, bugs, etc.-and change it accord-ing to your owner's manual guidelines.

Pump 'em up: Make sure your tires areinflated to the proper air pressure indicatedin your owner's manual. Underinflated tirescan wreak havoc on three fronts-they robyou of precious gas mileage (up to 15%),they wear out faster than properly inflatedtires and they can cause an accident. Do themath. If you're getting 20 miles to the gal-lon on underinflated tires, you can possiblybump that to 23 with the proper pressure. Ifyour gas tank holds 15 gallons and you getthree extra miles a gallon, that's 45 milesper fillup. If you fill up once a week, that's2,340 additional miles a year you're getting.Buy a quality tire gauge and check your tirepressure once a month.

Listen for the click: After filling up,make sure you tighten your cap until itclicks to prevent evaporation of gas andyour money. More than 145 million gallonsof gas evaporate each year from vehicles, according to the Car Care Council.

Made in the shade: Along with tighten-ing your gas cap, park in the shade whenev-er possible to reduce evaporative emissions. And that big thing attached to-or maybedetached from-your house? Yeah, yourgarage. Park in it whenever possible insteadof on your driveway or the street. Your carwill stay cooler lessening the need for theair conditioner when starting out.

To cool or not to cool?: The debaterages about whether air conditioning useaffects your miles per gallon. Follow yourgut on this one.

You're not Jeff Gordon: Acceleratesmoothly away from stop signs and stop-lights to get the most out of a tank of gas.

87, 91, 93, hike: Figuring out whatoctane gas to use in your car can seem ascomplicated as a football playbook. As ageneral rule, use the octane recommenda-tion in your owner's manual. Using a higheroctane fuel won't necessarily get you bettergas mileage, but it will you hit in the walletor pocketbook. And while you're filling up,don't worry about topping off. You don'tneed to get the absolute most miles possiblebefore your next pit stop, er, fillup, so try-ing to top off will likely only lead to gasspilled on the ground or on the finish ofyour car. Once the automatic nozzle shutsoff, stop pumping.

Channel your inner Columbo: Snooparound town and find the lowest gas prices-trenchcoat is optional. You might notice aparticular station or two is always a fewcents lower-or higher-than the rest.

Gas alternativeGas prices have risen dramatically in

recent years, and it looks like the situationwon't be improving any time soon. To easethe pain, many consumers are looking atalternatives like hybrids and vehicles thatrun on vegetable oil.

Almost any vehicle that runs on dieselfuel can be converted to vegetable oil forabout $1,000 to $3,000. Known affection-ately as grease cars, these vehicles have twotanks, one for diesel fuel and one for veg-etable oil. The vehicles must start and stopon diesel fuel and will run on vegetable oilafter it has heated up.

Vehicles that run on vegetable oil are notfor everyone. Do your homework beforeyou make the switch and ensure it will beworth your money. In most cases, themoney saved in fuel costs over the yearswill more than make up for the moneyspent on conversion.

Tune-ups areimportant

Most of us know that regular mainte-nance is key to a well-running vehicle. That's why we get our oil changed, haveour tires rotated and so forth. Anotherimportant part of the regular maintenanceschedule is the tune-up. Because the inter-nal workings of vehicles have changed somuch over the years, the definition of atune-up may vary from the simple replace-ment of spark plugs to the complete over-haul of several areas within the vehicle.

Most experts agree that the best tune-upsinvolve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emis-sions. Not every shop defines a tune-up inthis way, however. Generally, the moreinvolved the tune-up, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it is impor-tant that you find out what it will entail andhow much it will cost. Be wary of reallylow estimates; chances are the shop is push-ing for your business and the final bill forthe tune-up will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not alldrivers know what a tune-up is and requestone on the assumption that it will fix what-ever is wrong with their vehicle. They willask why you think your vehicle needs atune-up and go from there. You may dis-cover that what you really need are newbattery cables rather than new spark plugs.

Once you have several estimates, sitdown and compare them. Select the shopwhose estimate includes a fairly thoroughinspection at a fair price. You want to makesure that when you drive away from theshop your vehicle is running smoothly andefficiently.0

The term "tune-up" means differentthings to different people. Keep that inmind as you shop around for estimates.Know what you are getting before you takeyour vehicle in, and if you are getting atune-up for any reason other than mainte-nance issues, relay that information to theshop.

Good brakesare essential

What do you consider to be the mostimportant part of your vehicle? If you thinkit's the brakes, you are correct becausewithout the ability to stop your vehicle, you're like a projectile in search of a target. That's why it's important to pay attention toyour brakes.

Not every brake problem warrants areplacement. Before buying new brakes, you should check the level of your brakefluid. If it is low, fill it up and pump thebrakes a couple of times while the car isrunning. Slowly drive the car around to seeif the brakes have improved. You may justneed a new brake line. To detect a leak, park your vehicle overnight, move it a fewfeet in the morning and look for a wet spot.Even a small leak can affect your brakes'function.

Usually you can tell when you need newbrakes. You will hear a grinding or squeal-ing noise coming from the wheel area ofthe vehicle. The louder the noise, the worsethe brakes are. If you notice smoke comingfrom the wheel area, you should stop driv-ing and have your brakes replaced immedi-ately.

There are a number of problems you canexperience with your brakes. Some of theseinclude:

•Clunking brakes may indicate that thebolts holding the brakes together are loose. You could also have worn or broken sus-pension components.

•Spongy or weak brakes may indicatelow or contaminated brake fluid. If the fluidis contaminated, you will have to bleedyour brakes and put in new fluid. You couldalso have worn brake pads.

•Squeaky or whiny brakes may indicateworn brake pads. There is a small metalgasket between the brake pad and the pistonthat absorbs vibrations. When it becomesworn, squealing occurs. The gasket must bereplaced or at the very least coated with ananti-squeal lubricant.

HUNTING& FISHING

Oct. 2010 Fort Polk BONANZA ... Just Good Reading 337-515-3614 Page 7

You slide into your vehicle after a long day at work, eager toget home, kick off your shoes and take it easy, when you see it.One of the warning lights on your instrument panel is shiningbright, indicating that all is not well with your vehicle. Ugh!

The instrument panels on most vehicles consist of a variety ofred and yellow lights that let drivers know when there is a prob-lem with their vehicle. Some lights are more cause for concernthan others. Here is a brief description of the warning lights youmight see on your vehicle and what you should do in the eventthey occur.

Service Engine Soon: This light may also be labeled "CheckEngine" and can be triggered by any number of problems from aloose gas cap to a legitimate issue with the engine. As long asyour vehicle drives fine, there is no reason for you to panic. Youshould have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.

Air Bag Readiness: This light indicates there is a problemwith your air bags and you need to have your vehicle serviced assoon as possible. Don't ignore the warning and take a chance onair bag failure in an accident.

Anti-Lock or ABS: This light indicates the anti-lock featureon your brakes has been disabled and you should have your vehi-cle serviced as soon as possible. Your brakes will continue towork, but if you get into a situation where you have to brake hard, the wheels could lock up.

Engine Oil: This light indicates the oil pressure is low and youneed to have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignore the

warning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could riskextensive damage to the engine.

Low Engine Coolant: This light indicates the engine coolantis low and you should address the problem right away. Shut offyour vehicle, wait for the engine to cool and then check thecoolant level. Add some if needed. The light may go off. If itdoesn't, you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possi-ble.

Engine Coolant Temperature: This light indicates the tem-perature of the engine is beyond the safe maximum and youshould have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignore thewarning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could riskextensive damage to the engine.

Battery Voltage: This light indicates the battery is no longerbeing charged and you should address the problem right away. You have about 20 minutes of driving left before your vehicleshuts down completely, so you should turn off all unnecessaryelectrical accessories and have the battery checked. You may justneed a new battery, or you could be experiencing some otherproblem with your electrical system.

Warning lights can come on at any moment when you are driv-ing. Take them seriously, and if you don't know what one means, consult your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's rec-ommendations. Of all of the warning lights, the ones monitoringthe engine oil, engine coolant and battery are the most serious.

Jumping a car battery is a common occurrence, but surprising-ly a lot of drivers don't know how to hook up jumper cables or doit wrong, resulting in a flurry of sparks which can lead to anexplosion of hydrogen gas from the battery, or worse, damage tothe electronic components. Before attempting to charge a battery, drivers should make sure they know what they are doing.

Hooking up jumper cables is a fairly easy task. To do it safely, drivers should follow these instructions:

1. Position the vehicles so that they don't touch each other.

This will prevent a ground connection between the two.

2. Turn off the lights, heater fan and other electrical acces-

sories to both vehicles.

3. Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive

terminal on the battery of the booster vehicle and the other

end to the positive terminal on the dead battery.

4. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the nega-

tive terminal on the battery of the booster vehicle and the

other end to a vehicle ground, such as the engine-lifting eye.

5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and let it idle.

6. Start the engine of the vehicle being jumped.

7. Once the engine of the vehicle being jumped starts, dis-

connect the negative jumper cable of the jumped vehicle from

its ground connection. Then disconnect the black cable from

the negative terminal of the battery of the booster vehicle.

8. Disconnect the red cables from the positive terminals of

the batteries of both vehicles.

Should the jumped vehicle not start, the driver may need a newbattery or have some other problem. In this case, it is best to calla towing service and make an appointment with a mechanic.

Because they never know when they might need to jump-starta battery, all drivers should purchase a set of jumper cables andknow how to use them. Experts advise drivers to buy the bestquality of cables they can afford and make sure the clamps arewell insulated and the wire is at least eight gauge. Lighter gaugewires may not have the ability to deliver the current needed andcould in fact melt in the driver's hands.

Jump-starting a battery does not always work. Sometimes youjust need a new battery. That's why it's important for you to haveyour battery checked periodically. That way, you can avoid beingstranded with a dead battery.

You should take warning lights seriously

Jumping vehicle the proper way is safer

BrakesContinued from P.5

•Brakes grabbing or pulling may indicate worn or con-taminated brake pads or discs. Either way, the brakes willneed to be replaced.

•A brake pedal that goes down too far before you start toslow down may indicate low or contaminated brake fluid, worn brake pads or a bad brake power boost unit. To checkthe brake booster, you will need a special vacuum measure-ment device.

•Too firm of a brake pedal may indicate a problem withthe vacuum system. If there is nothing wrong with the sys-tem, check your brake booster unit. Something may be block-ing your brake fluid line, thereby preventing the fluid fromreaching its destination.

•A brake pedal that goes to the floor may indicate nobrake pressure due to low brake fluid or air in the brake fluid. If air is the culprit, you will need to bleed your brakes andreplace the fluid. You could also have a bad master cylinder.

•Pedal vibration at any time other than when braking hardmay indicate contaminated brake pads, bad brake discs, mis-alignment or worn front suspension.

If you think you have a brake problem, ignoring it won'tmake it go away. The problem will only get worse, endanger-ing not only you and your passengers but others on the road.Don't ignore the warning signs.
