Rosemary Yang President/CM Chair

MTAC L.A. County Branch 1425 S. Westminster Ave. Alhambra, CA 91803-1853

Tel: ( 626 ) 289-8597

Happy 2013 to each and every member of this special branch. May 2013 not only be a musically produc-tive one in each of our studios, but that every member be blessed with much happiness and good health.

No doubt the next two months will be very busy months for all teachers preparing their students for the March CM evaluations. Please make an attempt to read your emails a little more frequently for the next

two months.

The branch CM repertoire database will open shortly after the new year. Please observe our branch dead-line when the repertoire database will close. When that comes along and you have not filled in all the rep-ertoire and other pertinent information for your student, we will assume that the student is a DROP, and the student will not be scheduled. IF you miss the deadline and our database has closed, you will need to

pay a fee for each student that you did not register. We hope that this will not happen to any of you.

It is with both happiness and sadness that we bid our database chair Roseline Wang goodbye. We thank her for her faithful service to our branch for the past 10 years, and we wish her nothing but the very best as she begins her new married life all the way in Auckland, NZ. She returned recently and turned over all her knowledge to two of our incoming chairs Alice Weng and Daisy Kwok. Each have their respective CM database assignments, and your understanding and patience will be greatly appreciated as this is their first year, and the branch will give their unconditional support as they begin this new task serving the

L.A. Branch.

We also have a new chair to serve our VOCE competition. Annie Chen stepped in when this vacancy

needed to be filled in at the last moment. Let's support Annie too as she steps into this new position.

Our first branch event, Fall Festival was well organized by chairperson Lydia Wu. Despite a relatively lower turn out than the year before, we decided to go ahead as I am sure those that entered their students

would be disappointed if we had cancelled this first branch event of our musical year. Thank you Lydia.

As always, I must give credit to the entire board for all they do for our branch in their respective board positions. Every board member truly serves the branch with a deep sense of enthusiasm and responsibil-

ity that is truly hard to describe.

Let's show our support by sending in more students in our upcoming festivals, recitals and competitions.

2013 Los Angeles Branch Bach Festival

Some General Rules:

The Festival is open to students of active, provisional or student members of the MTAC Los Angeles Branch.

This includes active members who are contributors to the Los Angeles branch.

Student must have studied with their current teacher at least 6 months, unless by consent of the former teacher.

Students may play any original or transcriptions of J.S. Bach’s music, or music of other Baroque composers

within the 5 minute time limit. However, to be eligible to be considered to be chosen to play at the Re-

gional Festival (2nd round), the following exceptions must be upheld:

(1) No music from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook, ANH 113-132

(2) No transcriptions other than those made by J. S. Bach himself from his own works.

(3) No works by other Baroque composers.

Music need not be limited to the Complete Works Audition Official List of Bach's works in order to be

eligible for the Regional Festival. Music from the current Official List is required only at the Complete

Works Audition (CWA) [3rd round].

To be eligible for the CWA, students with works from the Complete Works List for the current year (2013)

must be a winner at the Regional Festival. Students must perform the same music as played in Branch and

Regional for Complete Works Audition, but now complete as shown on the Official List. For example, a

student may play an Invention (or Sinfonia) in the Branch and Regional level, but must play both Invention

and Sinfonia in the CWA, if he/she reaches that level. For the Official List of works for CWA, go to http://

www.scjbf.org/cwa.htm. [link]

Music must be performed by memory. Students do not need to provide music books to the judges. The Branch

chair will contact teachers if he/she has a student winner.

In the Branch level, Judges will select at least 35% of eligible students to play in the Regional Festival in

May. Branch winners must perform exactly the same music for the Regional level. In the event a branch

winner is unable to compete in the Regional level, an Alternate winner may be selected to take his/her

place. In the Regional level, judges will select 45% to be eligible to participate in the Complete Works

Audition in the Fall (early October).

Branch performers will receive a trophy for their participation. After the judges’ selections, branch winners

(the selected 35%) will receive rosettes; alternates and honorable mentions will receive award certificates

and ribbons.
