Half the World from Home Perspectives on the Irish in New Zealand, 1840-1950 DONALD HARMAN A KEN SON Professor of History, Queen's University, Ctintuin In recent years, historians of New Zealand have made major advances in coming to terms with the background of present-day race relations between Maori and Pakeha. Donald Akenson argues that it is now time to make a similar breakthrough in our understanding of the various European groups (especially those from the British Isles). Of the four European charter groups—the Welsh, English, Scots and irish—it has been the Irish—and particularly the Irish Catholics—who have maintained a separate identity the longest. Why this should be so is examined in depth across wide-ranging chapters dealing with: education, the eventual winning of separate Catholic facilities; the Irish-NZ writer Dan Davin; the Protestant-Irish settlement at Katikati; and analysis of the relative size of 19th and 20th century ethnic groups in New Zealand.

The most important implication of this pioneering study is that, just as scholars must retrieve previously-ignored Maori history in order to achieve a balanced view of the history of New Zealand's race relations, so they must uncover the fugitive and various strands of the cultural inheritance of New Zealand's European population; otherwise, present-day Pakeha culture will appear opaque and undifferentiated. June, 272pp., (cloth) $39.95

Biographical Dictionary of New Zealand Composers JOHN MANSFIELD THOMSON A pioneering work. Introductions to over 100 New Zealand composers from the nineteenth century to the present day, with select lists of works, writings, and bibliographies. Substantia] accounts of major artists are a feature which make this more than a standard work of reference. Compos-ers at present working in Britain and elsewhere—including Lyell Cresswell and Annea Lockwood—are fully represented along with those resident in New Zealand—Douglas Lilburn, David Farquhar, Jenny McLeod and many more. March, 168 pp., (paper) $24.95

The Making of the New Zealand Press 1840-1880 PATRICK DAY Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of Wnikato A comprehensive account of the evolving forms and functions of news-papers in this crucial period. Pat Day describes those changes which saw newspapers shift from being political discussion forums for higher status politicians to profit-oriented businesses concerned with advertising and newsgiving. A significant contribution to our understanding of the forces that shaped journalism. April, 266 pp., (paper) $34.95
