Christmas Lunch Our Christmas lunch will be on Wednesday 29

th November at The Gallery Restaurant, Greater Brighton Metropolitan

College (formerly City College). The entrance is in Whitecross Street, Brighton. Shirley Waters has booked the restaurant but as she has not been too well recently Sue will be co-ordinating the booking forms and the money. However, Shirley will still be in charge of the seating plan and Janet Ryan will preside over the raffle. Our guests will include Dr Henry Alexander, Jo Sayer and Diane Ferraby from Head Office. Please get your forms back to Sue as soon as possible and try to encourage your friends to come along to help celebrate Christmas in our 20

th anniversary year.

over 65 and it is important to be protected from the flu virus.

A Message from Sylvia Pargeter

Greetings members

I have been membership secretary for 20 very enjoyable years. Now I have decided it is time to delegate and Lizzie

Pickett, who you all know, has kindly offered to take over. Her details are on the back of this newsletter. In September

I attended the first meeting in the new venue, Maycroft Manor – very comfy seats and free refreshments after the

meeting! Hopefully we shall see you all there next month when Bex Morant will be coming along again to talk to us

about safe exercise for people with osteoporosis.

Maycroft Manor

We have now had two meetings at our new venue. We realise that sometimes change is difficult to handle and at the moment, with the road works in North Street, the bus journey may be slightly tedious – we ask for your continued support at the meetings. We have listened to your comments and as some of you did not like using the coffee lounge on the ground floor we have arranged for tea, coffee and biscuits to be served in the meeting room, and they are still not charging us for this. The committee feel sure that given time you will all enjoy your monthly jaunts to Patcham.

AGM REPORT – JULY 2017

I have regularly written the minutes of the Committee meetings

I have been involved with the delivery of the Musculo-skeletal service (MSK), commissioned to the PossabilityPeople.

I have attended seven meetings from August 2016 to July 2017, including: having a stall at the Hangleton & Knoll 50+

with Sue, a BME meeting and I have given a talk for the Right Track project. A cheque for £1,000 was given to our

group.

I have attended three Falls Prevention meetings at Hove Town Hall; unfortunately the people doing the data collection

were unable to attend and I still don’t know the number of hip fractures in B&H.

On the 07.10.16 I attended the NOS regional volunteers meetings with Sue and Lizzie in Hastings. It was also their

20th Anniversary.

On World Osteoporosis Day, Sue and I had a stall at the Fracture Clinic at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

I have attended the NOS conference in Birmingham from 06.to 09 November 2016. There I met Johan Holte,

Physiotherapist lead for the MSK. We discussed the lack of provision for osteoporosis patients as, my understanding

of the MSK procurement mentioned the creation of such a service. He was not aware of this.

In March 2017 I gave a talk to GPs at my GP practice on how to manage osteoporosis in young adults.

I have also attended a number of city wide events such as: Hubs City Connect in September 2016 and March 2017,

the Health and Social Care Network in June and the Network Accelerator For community Groups in June 2017. I have

used these meetings to distribute our programme for 2017 and NOS leaflets.

I have attended the Care Commissioning Group (CCG) meetings. The new Chief Executive is Dr. David Supple and

the Acting Director of Public Health is Dr. Peter Wilkinson.

In July 2017 I have attended the Big Health & Care Conversation where the new plan for delivering health care in our

local sustainability and transformation partnership (STP) plan was discussed.

I have been in touch with David Grant from The Sussex Osteoporosis Clinic to discuss the possibility of donating a

replacement mattress for the DXA machine.

I have been in contact with Lisa Vile, Customer Relationship Manager at Hallmark Care Homes to view the meeting

room at Maycroft Manor Home in Brighton.

I have helped Anthea to write her memories of her many meetings with the NOS’ patron, the Duchess of Cornwall and

Prince Charles for the Duchess’s 70th birthday, as requested by the NOS.

I have worked with Sue on organising our 20th Anniversary lunch.

As usual Henriette has been busy attending various meetings including some of the CCG and taking Anthea to various hospital & doctors’ appointments.

Henriette has managed to secure a reduced rate of £60 for our members for the Dexa Scan at The Sussex Osteoporosis Clinic at County Oak Medical Centre, Carden Hill, Brighton. In April, sadly Anthea stepped down as Chairman and handed the reins over to Sue Starr. In June we had the GPs study day which, once again, was very successful. Unfortunately the numbers attending were down on the previous one. This was very possibly due to the fact that there was an England World Cup Football match on the same afternoon. Both Henriette & Stella Scrivener, the Regional Development Manager, worked very hard in arranging speakers and Stella managed to get a Pharmaceutical company to pay for the food, thereby saving us a considerable sum.

Diana Warnes & Brian Chattock had their coffee morning in June and raised £125 for the group for which we are most grateful.

Unfortunately Jacynth stepped down from her position as Treasurer and Graham May took over.

Dr. Alexander gave us a Clinical Update on Geriatric Urology at our October meeting which was very well received.

Henriette & Sue attended the Knoll 50+ event in October. This was a local community event which was extremely well attended. They made some good contacts for speakers for our meetings.

Henriette, Lizzie & Sue attended the South Coast Support Groups network event at Hastings in October. This was run by Stella Scrivener. It coincided with Hastings Support Group’s 15

th Anniversary. They hosted a lovely afternoon tea

for all of us. Their guests included the Mayor of Hastings and Clare Severgnini, Chief Executive of NOS.

In November a team from the Briggs Unit at Brighton General Hospital came to the meeting and outlined the work they do at the falls clinic on fracture prevention. The team consists of two physiotherapists and occupational therapists and a registered nurse.

The Christmas Lunch, at The Gallery Restaurant, City College, Brighton, was arranged by Shirley Waters, ably assisted by Janet Ryan. We thank both of them for all their hard work. Dr. Alexander attended and gave us a few encouraging words, saying what a great job we all do. The excellent raffle raised £113 and Dr. Alexander won a teddy bear to add to his young son’s collection.

Stella Scrivener went on Maternity leave in December and had a baby boy, James on 23rd

December. The group sent her a congratulations card.

My thanks to the committee and all of you for supporting me during the changeover of Chairman. I really do appreciate the way you have all accepted me. I would also like to thank our medical advisors and Frances Du Toit, our patron, for their support.

Group Meeting 6th

September – Sidony Holdsworth – Independent Living Co-

ordinator for S.E England Red Cross

Sidony has been with the Red Cross for just under three years. She co-ordinates living services in East Sussex. Some

of the services offered are:

1. Mobility equipment hire – such as wheelchairs, commodes, shower stools and toilet frames.

2. A transport service is available in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. There is a donation of

45p per mile. The driver will collect you, take you to your destination, wait for you and then take you home and

see you into your home and make sure you are settled. Drivers are happy to do long distances. This service

must be pre-booked.

3. A carer support service which is free support to unpaid carers and is available for a 6 week period. This

service is not available in Brighton and Hove at the moment, but is accessible in East Sussex.

4. Assisted discharge service is available to take patients home after being discharged as an in-patient. This

service can include a follow up support package, which includes: shopping, carelink setup and a volunteer

service to help once a week at home for a couple of hours for up to 6 weeks.

All Red Cross employees and volunteers are trained and have been security checked using the Disclosure and

Barring Service known as a DBS check (formerly CRB).

October – Emma Chaplin – Eye Clinic Liaison Officer RNIB

at Sussex Eye Hospital

Unfortunately at the last minute Emma was unavoidably detained at work and was unable to attend the meeting. She

sent a true or false quiz concerning “Amazing eye facts” which was very interesting. We made good use of the

afternoon with various discussions. We came up with a few ideas for topics for Dr Alexander’s talk in February. They

are: Osteoarthritis, Diabetes and Kidney Disease.

We also spoke about things affecting us in the local area such as building developments and getting around town by

public transport.

Open day at Maycroft Manor

Maycroft Manor is having an open day on Saturday 18th November starting at 10:30am and we will be having a stand

there. Henriette will be giving a presentation on osteoporosis. There will be several stands and presentations during

the day on topics that should be of interest to the members of our group. Please do come along if you have a spare

half hour.
