season (winter months). The type ofturfgrass, field-use and off-seasontraffic on the field determines mow-ing height. Carbohydrate reservesare an important factor to winter sur-vival. Leaf surface determines carbo-hydrate production so special atten-tion should be given to the timing oflowering your mowing height as win-ter grows closer.

Aeration will also help the turfsurvive reducing compaction andallowing turf to drain excessive mois-ture. It can happen late in the seasonduring play with a slicing type of aer-ator so as not to interrupt play or itcan be done after the season with acore aerator. To combat any possiblewinter desiccation after core aera-tion, dragging of the cores or a topdressing is required.

If budget and manpower allow, tarps are another form of protectionfrom moisture, cold, desiccation andbuild-up of snow and ice on the turf. However, with the turf covered, it ismore vulnerable to disease, especiallydue to lack of air movement. It'simportant to monitor the conditionsunder the tarp throughout the courseof the winter as potential problemscan arise. Remove excessive snowduring the winter on the field, espe-cially if you're in an area where afreeze/thaw cycle is common to reduceice build-up in particular areas of afield that might have shade problems. On the other hand, periods of above-normal temperatures and excessivewinds also need special attention. When temperatures allow water to bepenetrated into the soil, irrigate tocounteract the lack of soil moisture.

Winter desiccation results fromdry, windy conditions for an extendedperiod of the time during the winter'months and often does not show upon a field until spring. Your bestdefense for winter turf protection isto regularly monitor your fieldthroughout the winter and be readyto act when potential problems pre-sent themselves on your fields.
