TESTING/MONITORING( AQUARIUM )
For the determination of sampling of the
aquarium water, these factors are taken into
consideration:
Activity tipology of the port area.
Ships influx.
Intensity and frequency of impact (for
example for temporary activities such as
construction of new terminal).
Proximity to other activities that may affect
the efficency of measurements.
Impact of different influx in the aquarium.

TESTING / MONITORING( GASES AND NOISE )
For the determination of monitoring points of
air quality and noise, these factors are taken
into consideration:
Activity tipology of the port area.
Type and number of used vehicles.
Intensity and frequency of impact (for
example for temporary activities such as
construction of new terminal).
Proximity to other activities that may affect
the efficency of measuremnts;

After identifying the areas with problem
parameters, we make recommendations to
minimize the negative impacts generated by the
development of operations and implementation of
port development projects.

Quality of water aquarium
Starting from the high levels of macronutrients, Pb, Cu, Cd, suspended matter and photogenes and
reduce the influence of the factors that affect in the water quality, we suggest/recommend as
below :
 1. Dumping reduction/waste spill (especially of the organic nature ) in the port by ships all
the categories that enter and/or operate /reside in port ;
 2. Strengthening control over ships at anchor. An important source, especially for heavy
metals, is remains of metal and paint on ships when they are old and subject to corrosion.
 3. Strengthening the control of waste during the process of unloading of ships, especially
cereals, since they are directly related to the N and P that is wasted in seawater;
 4. Strengthening control measures in terms of collection and treatment of food waste
produced in the port (employees and / or passenger.

Air Quality
We suggest that :
 1. Be identified and monitored by Port specialists construction work by
reducing all processes that cause dust and fumes during work time.
 2. Identify and eliminate all parts without adding to road / streets of the port
and laid them in order to reduce dust.
 3. To be checked and prevented all motor vehicles at the port causing the fumes
and gases more than the norm. For this you may be required to test their
equipments, despite the control of the vehicle that is carried out once a year.

Environmental Laboratory
We are currently at the stage of the
implementation and monitoring of the contract
"Electronic system and environmental
monitoring equipment" (Krijon l.t.d. 2011 -
2012)
Through implementation of this project:
It is established a monitoring framework for
environmental indicators in the territory of
Durres Port Authority.
It is trained the personnel who will carry out
sampling, analysis and interpretation of
environmental parameters.
We create conditions to have an accredited
laboratory and to establish a database with
environmental parameters.
To preserve the water, air and noise level
within the standards, we will monitor
periodically, as required by European
Bank for Reconstruction and
Development EBRD in order to fulfill EU
standards.
13
OPERATION MONITORING
We have approved the Environmental
Management Plan EMP in order to minimize the
impacts generated during the implementation of
the development projects and operations. Since
port is located near the urban zone, the
monitoring of generated impacts asks for a
specific attention.
The Specialists of Environmental
Directorate:
Carry out the Environmental & Social
Monitoring during the activity of the
stevedoring companies.
They give the duly recommendations as
well as compile an Action - Plan in order to
minimize the generated impacts.
14
The monitoring is carried out in compliance with
the standards required by European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development EBRD, for all
the activities at Durres Port.
STAFF TRAINING
 Training of the Environment Directorate
staff with the aim of Environmental
Audit of the activities and projects
implemented in Port of Durres, in
accordance with principles of the
performance required by EBRD.
Participation in ECOPORT 8 – Project, on
Eco – Management of the PAN EU
corridor ports.
 Participation in the workshop on
“Technology and Environmental Policy
at ports”, in Antwerp – Belgium, financed
by APEC organization under the auspices
of Belgian Government.

On May 2011, the Assembly of ESPO (Environmental
Sea Ports Organization) accepted the candidacy of
Durres Port Authority as an observer member.
We are engaged in ESPO initiatives, including SDM –
Self Diagnostic Method of environmental performance
by completing the relevant forms and review them
under the suggestion of specialists.
