With President Brian Figg in Mildura it was up to PE Tom Seddon to step in as President for Tuesday’s meeting, Johnny Krakowiak stood in as sergeant for the day and Hugh Wheeler acted as chairman.

Our guest speaker today was Libby Nuttall, Bendigo bureau manager for WIN and recently returned from a GSE visit to Norfolk in the UK, sponsored by RCB.

As many of you would remember, the GSE team to District 1080 had five members rather than the usual four owning to the very high standard of candidates.

The team visited several towns: Norwich, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Woodbridge, and Cambridge among them. That part of England is so full of history (and Cathedrals) that the team occasionally felt it would have been better to balance the historical touring with more of what the region is doing today and what are its plans for tomorrow.

Libby’s interest naturally was in journalism, and she felt that the BBC and ITV were a decade further down the DIY path than WIN is: journos ordinarily are their own camera operator, sub-editor and even do any graphics that accompany a story to broadcast. She brought along a shot of her looking right at home in the presenters chair of the BBC studio in Norwich.

To her surprise, she actually found more of interest at radio stations and regional newspapers. One in

particular impressed Libby with the extent of and enthusiasm they put into their social media strategy, something she felt Australian media companies don’t take seriously enough.

Libby and her husband own a racehorse, and she was able to include a day at Newmarket which included a visit to the course and also the Jockey Club. On another day she visited the Royal Family’s Sandringham Stud. Another break was made in the

itinerary for the team to spend a weekend shopping at Harrods and seeing Jersey Boys in the West End in London.

The end of the GSE included the District 1080 conference and a meeting with the 1080 team that will soon make the return visit here to Australia.

Thank you to stand-in Sergeant John Krakowiak, who on short notice put together an impressive sergeants session on the ecological, pharmacological, economic and other benefits of going vegetarian. After the big lunch the Club served up I might just manage on a salad tonight! Frida our basset hound won’t be much impressed by that, I’m sure.

Looking to the rest of the month, we will have President Brian back with us next week, and Bev Figg is coming home from Melbourne tomorrow also. It’s

a regular lunch meeting next Tuesday and then on the 18th it’s our Christmas Dinner. Make sure you tell Ian Coates whether you’re coming or not.

Then, our last outing for the year is Christmas Carols on the 23rd. John Flood is keeping the roster and unless you’ve told him you’re unable to help you’re on it so we’ll see you there!

Our Rotary exchange student Zsofi shared a presentation she delivered recently when meeting with other incoming exchange students.

Good Evening,

My name is Zsofi and I’m an inbound from Hungary. I got the amazing opportunity to spend my exchange year in Australia, in the District 9800 with 16 other students from all over the world. We, inbounds, have been here for around 4 months now, and I am speaking for all of us when I say, we have already learnt important things about the world, family, friendship and aobut ourselves.

When we came on exchange we crossed our borders. Not just physically but also mentally. We left everytning behind, everything we knew, to start a new life on the other side of the world and it was the best decision a person could ever make.

In Australia, we are expriencing a new culture, using a new language and making new friends for a lifetime. But most importantly: we’re learning more things in one day than we ever thought possible.

As I mentioned we all had to face challenges. The first days were the hardest. On the first morning I didn’t know when to get out of bed, who to talk to, where to sit and what to talk about. I didn’t even know which one is the right of the car and the road because it’s the total opposite in Europe.

Initially, you are always out of your comfort zone. But this will change. Now everything has changed for me. It has only been four months and I already feel much mroe self confident, indpendent, decisive, tolerant and have a greater life perspective - and it’s all thanks to Rotary.

I feel I have grown up here and I know that I am not alone in this. So on behalf of all the inbound exchange studetns I would like to thank Rotary district 9800 for the opportunity of Youth Exchange.

Announcements at this week’s meeting came from Frank Lean giving member’s a heads up on the annual Exercise Book drive through Donations in Kind. He suggested Boltons, or one of the several supermarkets that also carry them.

Ian ‘Bear’ Coates gave us some more details of the forthoming Christmas Meeting, see details included in Fossicker.

John Flood wanted to thank members for their efforts at the Camp Getaway working bee last weekend. He also made mention of PP Wayne Smith collecting as many tools as he could before heading home, some not belonging to him and then forgetting some of his, an appropriate fine ensued.

John also announced the first draft of a roster for the annual Christmas Carols on Sunday, December 23. See attached. Please check your allocation on the roster and advise John Flood of any problems.
