We hosted the District Governor Dennis Shore and his wife Lynda at our meeting today - we had a very solid turnout to showcase our club, so a big thanks to those who were able to make it, and special mention to Hugh Wheeler who flew in from Fiji that morning to make the meeting!. Thanks also to Sergeant (Greg) Bickley for a great job the past two weeks. On item that popped out of the DG’s presentation was Rotary Leadership Institute - now coming to Bendigo (if sufficient numbers confirmed) run over three half day Sunday Morning sessions, first 19/8, then 9/9 then 30/9. Let me know ASAP if you are interested - whilst I applaud the use of the word leadership in the title, this program is as much about acquiring Rotary Knowledge in an accelerated timeframe, ideal for those newer members. For those interested in attending this program, the fee will be covered by the club. Welcome and intro of our guests Zsofia (Zsofi) Szabo, our Youth Exchange Student from Hungary Colin Clarke, Rotary Club of Kangaroo Flat DG Dennis Shore, Rotary Club of Hawthorn and Lynda Shore. Messages (from We Care / Members) Val Broad – now in rehab at St John of God Bendigo and very appreciative of the wishes of the Club and members. Rosalie made a visit earlier in week and reported Val to be in good spirits. Coxxy (that is Alan Cox) – now at No 16 Stella Anderson on Barnard Street, a number of Alan’s Rotary friends are keeping in touch. brother’s birthday on Saturday. Well done Zsofia on your first talk and I’m sure it won’t take you too long to settle in at school.ROTARY BUSINESSFellowship – Bill Gray announced to members our first fellowship event for the year - mark 26th August 2012 (Sunday Afternoon) in your diary. Andrew and the committee have arranged a “sit down” luncheon at Domaine Asmira, Gibb Road, Toolleen for 12.15, followed by a visit to Jasper Hill Winery thereafter. Bill informed the members that Jasper Hill is open one day per year - so some great manoeuvring by Andrew I believe to fit us in.

Combined Night Meeting (with Bendigo Strathdale) - at All Seasons Tuesday 18 September 2012 a 6.30pm for 7.00pm start “Villian or Hero” - a true story presented by novelist Robin DeCrespiney who provides some background to her recently released book through Penguin “The People Smuggler”. More info later - mark this one in your diary!

Vocational Service - John Krakowiak advised the meeting that Literacy Week is near, and the Club would again seek volunteers to come along with a book and read to the young children at a local school (most likely Kennington again). This was a great success last week and I encourage members to see John and support this initiative.

Camp Getaway - Past President Wayne Smith read out a letter received from Paul Kirkpatrick acknowledging the marvellous donation of $10,000 from our club toward the kitchen redevelopment. The club receives “credits’ for this donation - meaning we can utilise for an event/camp we may wish to sponsor/donate.

Combined Rotary Club of Bendigo Disaster Relief Fund - I provided an update to members following receipt of a letter from Past District Governor Gordon McKern. The fund provided $142,014 during

2010/2011 for those families in need following the devastating Rochester Floods and another $9,668 last year. Gordon thanked the combined clubs, and advised the fund would be left open for further donation in case of any future events.Vibe Alive – Indigenous Youth Festival – Note the Club have decided to withdraw our offer to cater the two morning crew breakfasts at this event due to a number of circumstances. Thanks for those members who offered to help out.Backyard Blitz in Charlton – an initiative of RC of Kangaroo Flat and all Cluster Clubs encouraged to participate on Saturday 13/10/12 to help out some families in Charlton struggling to get back to normal after the floods in 2011. Would be great if we have a car or two (or even a bus) of keen volunteers. More later.NEXT WEEKOur guest speaker next week is Rosey Panelli, Epilepsy Australia whom are this year’s beneficiary from the Bendigo Fleece Competition run at the Sheep & Wool Week in Bendigo- our own Kurt Walder will provide the background to the competition and introduce our guest.GUEST SPEAKER SUMMARYDistrict Governor Dennis Shore was introduced by Chairman for the day Hugh Wheeler and received a warm welcome from members present.Dennis gave a concise and very pertinent presentation and listed 13 challenges for the Club to take on board:-1. Live this year’s theme “Peace through Service”2. Membership - provide Vision and Mission, and a

roadmap to existing and new members.3. Implement your Plan and utilise the Club Visioning

Exercise (Dennis even mentioned the Rotary Club of Melbourne were doing this!).

4. Rotary and the Community - Dennis has set a date of 21/4/13 to be “Rotarians at Work Day”

across communities in Victoria, doing a hands on local project to promote the powerful message of Rotary to the public.

5 Participate in other Signature Programs - City to Surf volunteering, Celebrating Women in Rotary were examples (though we have some closer to home).

6. Rotary Foundation - continued support from Clubs and Members essential for the Foundation to continue to thrive.

7. Peace Youth Forum - upcoming in three world locations, with District 9800 looking to send representatives to Hiroshima. Dennis was proud to mention that the District has sponsored a Rotary Peace Scholar every year since inception of program - the only District in the world to do so.

8. Rotary International Presidential Citation - Dennis encouraged the Club/ President to aim for this.

9. Rotary Leadership Institute - in three half days learn the ins and outs of Rotary which could

take 3-5 years otherwise!. A local “chapter” is proposed for Bendigo on Sunday 19/8/12 first half day dependant on numbers (then 9/9 and 21/10). Contact President Brian if you are interested ASAP - would be great to see 4-5 members register.

10.Make your club a “Welcoming Club” for visitors, guests and members.

12.Support your President during their year.13.Promote and attend the next District 9800
