WHAT ARE FOSSIL FUELS?

Fossil fuels are natural resources formed in the earth over millions of years, and they produce carbon dioxide when burned.

Page 3: Fossil fuels

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOSSIL FUELS

• Coal

• Oil

• Natural gas

Page 4: Fossil fuels

HOW IS COAL FORMED

Coal is formed from the vegetation that grew 400 years ago. As plants and trees died their remains sank to the bottom of the swampy areas and then gradually over time turned into coal.

Page 5: Fossil fuels

DIFFERENT STAGES OF COAL FORMATION

• Before the dinosaurs many giant plants died in swamps

• Over millions of years the plants were buried into water and dirt

• Heat and pressure turned the dead plants into coal

COAL AS A FOSSIL FUEL

Coal is used to heat homes, make electricity, the heat from coal is used to make pottery, cement and glass.

HOW IS OIL FORMED

• Tiny sea plants and animals died and were buried in the ocean floor

• Over millions of years the fossils moved deeper and deeper into the earth

• Today we drill down into the layers of the earth to get to the oil formed by the fossils

OIL USED AS A FOSSIL FUEL

• Tires

• Bubble gum

• Eyeglasses

• Dish washing liquid

• CDS and DVDs

Page 9: Fossil fuels

HOW IS NATURAL GAS FORMED

• Sea plants and animals died and were buried in the layers of silt

• Over the years the fossils were buried deeper and deeper

• Today we drill down and get our natural gas

NATURAL GAS AS A FOSSIL FUEL

Natural gas is used to produce

• Steel

• Glass

• Paper

• Brick

• electricity

Refineries

A refinery is a place where certain or raw materials are turned into products of value

Page 12: Fossil fuels

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT ?

Refineries help us by changing fossil fuels into things that we need for our daily lives.

They turn raw substances like natural gas, oil and coal into things that we could use more in our daily lives like, paper, clothes, deodorant.

EXXON VALDEZ

Exxon Valdez was an oil spill that occurred in Alaska. The oil tanker hit a reef and spilled almost 10.8 million us gallons of oil. Workers used high pressure hoses to clean the shorelines. They even used a mixture to spray over the surface to try to get rid of the oil. Many animals were harmed, as soon as the oil spill occurred many were killed because they were covered in oil

DEEP WATER HORIZON

This incident was an offshore drilling rig that sank on April 22 2010 causing the deep water spill. Workers tried to put fire off by using water, because of this there is more oil flowing into the gulf of Mexico. Many plants and animals were destroyed and their habitats were ruined. Because of this oil spill there is a new threat to these species of plants and animals.
