What are fossil fuels?

• Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas)are forms of stored energy that are formed when plant and animal remains are trapped in the earth’s crust for millions of years and heat and pressure act on them

Natural Gas

Oil

Coal

Why are fossil fuels important• Fossil fuels are used to produce heat and

also power machines in factories.

• Fossil fuels power machines called turbines that help produce electricity

• Fossil fuels are refined to make gasoline used by cars

Evaluating Energy Resources• The types we use determine our quality of

life and the amount of harmful environmental effects

• Questions to ask ourselves:– How much of the energy source will be

available in the future?– What is this source’s net energy yield?– How much will it cost to develop, phase in, and

use this resource?– How much will extracting, transporting, and

using the energy resource affect the environment?

– What will using this energy source do to help sustain Earth?

Page 5: FOSSIL FUELS

Net EnergyThe total useful energy available from the resource over its lifetime

minusThe amount of energy used, lost, and wasted in finding, processing, concentrating, and transporting it to uses

Natural gas is commonly used as a source of heat for cooking

Poster & Gallery Walk • On your poster you must include the

following:– Title – Picture– What is this fossil fuel and how is it formed? – Where is this fossil fuel found and how do

we find it? – How do we use this fossil fuel and what is

the net energy yield?– What are the benefits (pros) of this fossil

fuel?– What are the cons for this fossil fuel?

• Information needs to be easy for others to find.

When fossil fuels are burned in excess, they can cause air pollution

Page 11: FOSSIL FUELS

Fossil fuels: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle• Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources

and therefore they have to be used wisely

• Excess burning of fossil fuels releases a lot of carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere

• Excess carbon dioxide destroys the earth’s ozone layer which protect us from skin cancer

Fossil fuels are unevenly distributedWhat % of the world’s oil does Iraq have?

What % of the world’s natural gas does the U.S. have?

Why do you think some countries have more fossil fuels than others?

3.0%9.6%

Usage of fossil fuelsGlobal consumption of fossil fuels is at its highest level ever.

How much does the average American use compared to the average Indian? The average American uses 100 times more energy than the average Indian.

When in your day do you use fossil fuels?
