NurseryParent’s Meeting
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to Whitehall Primary School Nursery!
We would normally hold this meeting in school so that you are able
to meet the staff and have a look around the school. However due
to the COVID-19 situation this will not be possible this year.
This presentation will provide you with all the necessary information
to prepare your child for school.
All dates and times may be subject to change. We will inform
you of the necessary changes.
You will be able to see our school in our virtual video tour is

Settling In• We would normally have had Stay and Play sessions for the
children in the Summer term and Home Visits in September.
However this will not be possible this year due to COVID-19.
• From the week beginning Tuesday 1st September 2020, instead
of home visits, we will be telephoning you during the week to
ask you a few questions about your child.
• Due Government guidance, we will be unable to have parents inside
the school building. Therefore it is going to be difficult for the
children to settle. Over the summer holiday please talk to your child
about starting school, walk past the school and show them that is
where they will be going. Get them used to staying without you at a
family members house. It may take a few weeks for them to settle
in. They may only stay for a short time or do a couple of days. We
will work with each family on an individual basis according to the
needs of your child. I am sure that you understand the situation. We
want a smooth transition as possible for the children.

The Curriculum
• The Foundation Stage Curriculum is
taught through structured play based
activities.
• The activities that are set up for the
children have a learning objective around
them.
• We will inform you of what we are learning
each week so that you can reinforce the
learning at home.
The 7 Areas of Learning
• The 3 Prime areas
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Physical Development
• Communication and Language
4 Specific Areas
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding of the World
• Expressive Arts and Design
Assessment• Baseline Assessments – these are carried
out in the first few weeks of when your child starts.
• Learning Journey Folders – these are individual folders containing
assessments and achievements of the children throughout the year.
• Observations – teachers assess daily learning through
observations of independent learning. These are recorded on a secure
App on school iPads. Photos are taken of the child and added to their Learning
Journey. This is a folder of their learning which parents can look through and also add
to.
• Independent Learning – children need to demonstrate their learning
independently with limited support.
• Guided Activities – this is where the teachers TEACH
the children new skills and support the children.
• Super Stars – these are sent to parents to complete noting
down any new learning at home. These are added to the Learning Journey Folder.
Literacy
• Children will be able to take home library
books once a week.
• Please ensure that the books bags are
brought everyday.
• Please buy the red school book bags to stop
books becoming damaged. No rucksacks.

child and encourage talk.
Helping at home• Reading – please read a variety of books to your
child EVERDAY. Talk about the pictures, ask them

teaching them the rules of speaking and listening. Children will learn to express
themselves confidently.
• Counting & recognising numbers – use everyday activities to
introduce mathematical language and understanding.

Being outdoors has a positive impact
on children’s sense of well-being and
helps all aspects of children’s
development. It offers opportunities for
doing things in different ways and on
different scales than when indoors.
Golden Rules and Code of ConductThese are the rules that the children will learn.
• Positive Behaviour – we praise positive behaviour using verbal praise,
stars, stickers, house points, certificates and prizes.
• Traffic Lights System - ALL children start on GREEN.
• If children choose not to follow the rules then there are consequences:
• The first time they will get a verbal warning.
• If they continue, then they will move from Green to AMBER and have time
out to think for a few minutes in the classroom.
If they still continue with the behaviour then they move to RED! This is when
they will have to have time out in another classroom OR go and see a
member of the Senior Management Team!
• Every day is a new day! Sanctions usually do not carry on to the next
day.
Events• Parties - we celebrate all the major festivals with parties.
These will be confirmed nearer the time.
• Christmas Performance – we normally perform the
Nativity for parents. However, this will need to be confirmed this year.
• Fundraising events– we hold a variety of
Charity events throughout the year.
• Parent Mail – communication to and from school will be via
Parent Mail. You will need to sign up for this.
