Like many healthcare organizations across the country, Orlando Health is facing tough challenges including declining patient volumes during this tough economy as well as government policies, cutbacks and changes in how insurers pay hospitals to provide care. These financial challenges include Medicaid payment reductions over the past three years that amount to $75 million.
Last year, Orlando Health began working with a nationally recognized expert to take a hard look at our operations and make recommendations for a project known as “Value Creation.” This process is designed to assess and improve our processes and policies based on best practices at other hospitals that have demonstrated high quality patient care at a lower cost. Efficiency enhancements, expense reductions, restructuring processes, and reorganization of staff are expected as part of this ongoing process. These changes are not easy, but they will allow us to remain a competitive, successful organization in this evolving healthcare environment.
As you may know, Orlando Health’s Board of Directors announced on September 26 the decision to transition leadership as we continue our efforts to shape our delivery of care to meet the needs of the emerging new healthcare environment. During Sherrie Sitarik’s tenure as president and CEO guiding Orlando Health, she has been an inspirational leader and fierce advocate for quality patient care. Moving forward, I believe we have a strong foundation on which to build and prosper. As Dr. Jamal Hakim
steps in as interim president and CEO, I am confident that his exemplary reputation and strong leadership skills will carry the organization through this challenging time.
Often, the toughest challenges also present the greatest opportunities. I have served as a part of the Orlando Health family for 36 years, and I can assure you that we are doing all of the necessary things to ensure that our organization thrives — not only during this period but also well into the future. Orlando Health has weathered many storms over our nearly 100 years, and we are committed to doing everything it takes to continue fulfilling our mission of improving the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities we serve while securing Orlando Health’s position for a strong future during a time of great challenges for many healthcare organizations. We promise to be careful stewards of our vision as a trusted leader inspiring hope through the advancement of health.

Charitable IRA Gift Opportunity - Expires December 31, 2013 Congress extended the opportunity for individuals age 70½ and older to take advantage of their IRA for charitable giving. Charitable Gift Annuities If you would like to increase your own income or that of a family member, while also benefiting a charity, a gift annuity may be your best alternative. A gift annuity enables you to take a charitable tax deduction
for the current year, while also providing you with an income stream for the rest of your life! Quarterly payments are based upon a fixed rate of return, based on your age at the time of your gift and are significantly higher than current CD rates.

TINy BABy BALLTiny Babies, Big Miracles
On Saturday, September 7, The Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation, in partnership with Land Rover Orlando, proud
member of the Fields Auto Group, presented Tiny Baby Ball, an event benefiting the Alexander Center for Neonatology at
Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.
This year’s event took 600 guests on a journey through classic childhood nursery rhymes, highlighting several families and children who experienced the lifesaving care of the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The event also honored the NICU team who passionately care for the many tiny babies at Winnie
Palmer Hospital. The evening’s events delivered a powerful message through creative displays and live personal testimonies. No heart was left untouched. No person left uninspired. It was evident the
NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital is a place where big miracles happen every day.
A special thanks to board member, Amanda Caruso, for her leadership of our Tiny Baby Ball event committee, and to Debbie

Tom and Joan Kalimanis announce major matching gift contribution for Winnie Palmer Hospital NICU expansion
Tom and Joan Kalimanis were first introduced to the amazing work being done at Arnold Palmer Medical Center when they were invited to an event in 2008. Along with the generous financial investments they have made since then, which have included gifts to The Heart Center and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, they have also invested significant amounts of their time with visits, tours and conversations — getting to know our team members, our mission and our vision for the future.
“We appreciate their thoughtful approach to giving,” says John Bozard, president, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. “It has resulted in a close friendship and philanthropic partnership that has flourished over the years.”
In 2010, as part of the 35th anniversary celebration of the Winnie Palmer Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Tom and Joan Kalimanis made a significant leadership gift through the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation to kick off the NICU expansion campaign (Winter 2010 issue of Foundation & Friends).
Now, three years later, great strides have been made, but there is still work to be done. Tom and Joan have responded
to the challenge by putting forth a challenge of their own. Through the Berger Foundation, founded
by Joan’s parents in 1961 with a focus on helping children, Tom and Joan are
making another significant
leadership gift in the form of a matching gift contribution. The Berger Foundation will match all gifts made to the NICU expansion project up to $500,000.
“The Berger Foundation is based on the belief that the future rests in the hands of our youth,” says Joan. “We are committed to doing everything we can to make sure these tiny NICU babies have a chance at a future.”
The matching gift was announced at the Tiny Baby Ball on September 7. The inspiration-filled atmosphere of the evening was the perfect backdrop, and Tom and Joan’s passion brought an immediate energy to the room.
“We understand the critical need to expand the NICU,” says Tom. “We want to contribute to the effort, and through our matching gift, we hope others will feel comfortable to join us in giving.”

JetBlue Airways, Golf Channel and Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge teamed together for the inaugural Champions for Arnold’s Kids Latrobe Classic — a unique event hosted by golf legend Arnold Palmer at his home course in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on September 9, 2013.
The event began with an evening reception at Bay Hill for more than 80 participants. Early the next morning, guests boarded a charter flight, provided by JetBlue Airways, to Latrobe, where Mr. Palmer welcomed them for a round of golf organized by Golf Channel at his Latrobe Country Club.
In addition to legendary golfer, Arnold Palmer, participants were also joined by PGA TOUR golfer Brian Davis, who good-naturedly agreed to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, joining one lucky team for play. Brian became a faithful ambassador for Arnold Palmer Medical Center when his daughter was a patient in the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital.
The one-of-a-kind golf experience raised over $200,000 and concluded with Dave Barger, CEO of JetBlue Airways, and Mike McCarley, president of Golf Channel, announcing a commitment by the three organizations to raise $1 million over the next five years to help expand the NICU.
“We are so thankful for three generous organizations who came together to
create one amazing event to benefit these tiny babies,” says John Bozard, president, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. “As we expand the NICU, it is partners such as these that make the project a reality, allowing us to treat more of Central Florida’s tiniest patients.”

A longtime supporter of children’s charities and programs, Wawa quickly sought out Arnold Palmer Medical Center and was moved to support the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital. Wawa elected to support the NICU by sponsoring Miracle Miles’ Walk-For-Winnie, a symbolic walk in recognition of our neonates and their families. Additionally, Wawa is a longtime supporter of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® and has
continued their generous support since expanding to the Florida market by raising funds for Arnold Palmer Hospital and UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital through the efforts of Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Wawa has also teamed up with the Florida chapter of Variety – the
Children’s Charity, a longtime philanthropic partner of Wawa in their other markets. Variety – the Children’s Charity of Florida, which has supported Arnold Palmer Medical Center for more than 20 years, recently approached Wawa with an in-store fundraising campaign request. Wawa obliged, and A Little Change for a Brighter Future raised $3,200, which Variety Florida designated for Winnie Palmer Hospital, through “extra change” jars placed in Orlando-area Wawa stores.

Known as the children’s charity of the entertainment industry, Variety – The Children’s Charity is dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of children around the world. While they are an international organization, one of their areas of focus is the support of children’s initiatives, including local children’s hospitals. In our community, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Florida has been a charitable partner of Arnold Palmer Medical Center for more than 20 years. Their generous commitment to the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital has supported the lifesaving ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program, caring for babies with life-threatening heart and lung problems.

Generous Gift to NICU Continues Family Tradition Rick and Nancy Bosserman believe that giving back is what they’re supposed to do. It’s as simple as that.
It is said that children learn by example, and Rick Bosserman had truly exemplary examples to learn from. He learned that giving back to the community is what you’re supposed to do, because he saw his parents doing just that. His parents, Charles and Gladys Bosserman, were longtime philanthropic supporters of Arnold Palmer Medical Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando.
The Bosserman family moved to Orlando in 1949, and the following year, Rick was born at our own Orange Memorial Hospital. As an Orlando native and “Orlando Health baby,” it seems like providence that Rick and his wife, Nancy, would choose to give their support to the babies at Winnie Palmer Hospital. In 2005, Rick and Nancy founded the For Giving Foundation as a vehicle to quietly give back to the community. “I feel blessed that we are able to carry on my parents’ legacy and their tradition of giving through our foundation,” says Rick. “I believe the For Giving name speaks for itself.”
“We are so pleased that Rick and Nancy are continuing the Bosserman family tradition of philanthropy and have chosen to give their support to one of our top priorities of expanding our NICU,” says John Bozard, Foundation president. “Their generosity will help give our tiniest patients a chance to survive and carry on their own family traditions.”

Charles and Gladys BossermanCharles and Gladys Bosserman, fondly known to friends as Chuck and Willie, were wonderful champions of our Foundation mission for many years, supporting Arnold Palmer Medical Center and MD Anderson – Orlando. In fact, they were among a generous group of committed donors who carried out the vision to build the Charles Lewis Pavilion and raise the standard of cancer care in the Southeast. While the Bossermans were very humble in their giving, preferring to do so without recognition, their philanthropy earned them placement on the ORMC Heritage Circle Donor Wall, the Distinguished Philanthropist’s Wall and the Arnold Palmer Medical Center/Arnold Palmer Hospital Early Donor Wall. Beginning in 1985, their support continued for 25 years. Both Chuck and Willie passed away in 2011; however, their generosity and kindness will never be forgotten. Their legacy will continue to live on through their son, his family and the For Giving Foundation.

37th Annual Bert M. Warden’s Golden south Classic Presented by adidas®
America’s brightest high school track and field athletes competed at the 37th Annual Bert M. Warden’s Golden South Classic presented by adidas® this past summer. The nationally-recognized competition was on held Saturday, May 18th at the Warden Stadium at The First Academy in Orlando and raised nearly $130,000 for its longtime beneficiary, the Sports Medicine Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital.
The internationally attended track and field event is one of three meets in the prestigious adidas® Golden Stripes series, which means that winners in the men’s and women’s mile and 100-meter races were automatically invited to compete in the adidas® Dream Mile and Dream 100 in New York City on May 25, 2013. While the meet’s Classic Division caters to experienced athletes, the Prep Division, a series of events with no qualifying standards, geared toward beginner athletes, is an excellent way for younger participants to experience a competitive track and field event that creates lasting excitement about future competition. This growing division has proven to be a great start for kids who are interested in track and field, allowing them an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge. The Prep Division continues to grow exponentially from year to year and many past participants return to compete in the classic division events.

15th Annual Miracle Miles Presented by Panera Bread® Raises Funding for NICU at Winnie Palmer HospitalOn Saturday, September 21, over 4,000 runners, walkers and spectators of all ages gathered at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando for the 15th Annual Miracle Miles presented by Panera Bread®. The event, which features 5K and 15K races, is held to raise critical funds for the Alexander Center for Neonatology at Winnie Palmer Hospital. With the matching funds from the Berger Foundation challenge gift, more than $82,000 was raised in online fundraising this year.

In recognition of a decades-long business and philanthropic partnership, Mateer Harbert’s gift will name Business Center in new Patient Tower at ORMC
When one considers Orlando Health’s nearly 100 years of serving the Central Florida community, there are only a handful of organizations that have shared much of our history. Mateer Harbert is one of these partners. For decades, Mateer Harbert’s sound counsel has helped guide Orlando Health.
Mateer Harbert has also been a generous philanthropic friend of Orlando Health, committed to our mission and our vision. That generosity and commitment has been expressed yet again through their support of the comprehensive ORMC project, helping us put in place the essential facilities and technologies necessary to continue to provide the highest level of clinically-integrated care. The ORMC project comprises the Acute Care Pavilion and new Patient Tower, both designed from the patient and family perspective. The Acute Care Pavilion will greatly increase the capacity of ORMC’s most complex and lifesaving services, including emergency, trauma, cardiac and surgical care. The new 350,000-square-foot Patient Tower will feature dedicated cardiac and ICU floors, enhanced inpatient rooms, and a grand lobby area.
Located on the first floor of the new Patient Tower, the Mateer Harbert Business Center will provide on-site computer and Internet services in a convenient, quiet setting for patients, families and visitors to conduct business or update family and friends. It will also serve as a meaningful and lasting tribute to Mateer Harbert’s legacy in the community. Managing Director of Waldorf Astoria & Hilton Bonnet Creek Complex Touched by Trauma CareA personal family experience inspired the Kacheris family’s generous gift to the ORMC Level One Trauma Center
As guests at the ONE NIGHTSM event in May 2012, Peter and Maribeth Kacheris were moved by the compelling firsthand stories of people whose lives were saved because of ORMC’s Level One Trauma Center. The emotional impact left them thinking, “We should really do something.”
Like many people in the community, Peter and Maribeth were glad to know that ORMC’s Trauma Center, the only Level One Trauma Center in Central Florida, is always ready to provide lifesaving care to the most critically injured. They also thought they would never need it. But just a few months after attending their first ONE NIGHT, Peter answered his phone to hear, “Dad, I’ve been in an accident.” Home on a college break, 21-year-old Will was on his way to visit friends in Lake Mary when the driver of a Chevy Suburban ran a red light and T-boned Will’s Honda Accord at 55 mph.
Remarkably, Will initially experienced only minor pain. As a precaution, he was taken to nearby South Seminole Hospital, a part of Orlando Health. Quick action and evaluation revealed a serious trauma injury: Will had a lacerated spleen and was bleeding internally. He was airlifted to ORMC’s
Level One Trauma Center, where extensive resources and a highly specialized trauma team are ready 24/7. When Peter arrived, he was in disbelief that he was actually standing in the Trauma Center and that it was his own son being cared for by this extraordinary team.
Doctors explained the seriousness of the damage to Will’s spleen, adding that while it was the seatbelt that caused the injury, without it he probably would not have survived. They made the decision to fight to preserve the spleen — a decision made possible because of the exceptional level of care and expertise, along with the most advanced technology and resources, available at the Level One Trauma Center. With close monitoring, Will recovered without surgery, spending five days in the Trauma Center’s ICU and Step-Down units.
As managing director of Waldorf Astoria and Hilton Bonnet Creek Complex, Peter knows about treating people well. “Hospitals and hotels are in some ways very similar,” says Peter. “It was clear that the people there weren’t just coming to work. We were consistently and overwhelmingly impressed with the comprehensive care Will received. From the physicians to housekeeping, everyone
demonstrated a perfect combination of professionalism and compassion.”
Peter and his family are now dedicated advocates of the Trauma Center, and he says, “We felt that we needed to do our small part, to say ‘thank you.’ We will be lifelong friends of ORMC.”
Peter is also committed to helping ensure that the Bonnet Creek Complex continues to support Orlando Health Foundation events, knowing that one day an employee may need lifesaving trauma care. He sums it up with, “It’s a good place to be in a bad situation.”

The Southwest Community Board hosted receptions at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Health Central Hospital, inviting local residents to learn more about the exceptional healthcare services available to them right in their own local communities.
Orlando Health senior vice president Mark Jones welcomed guests for tours and presentations by cardiologist Israel Mantecon, MD, and critical care medicine physician Sam Venus, MD. Dr. Mantecon led a tour of several areas, including the Chest Pain Observation Unit, Cath Lab, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology. Dr. Venus then gave guests a tour of a patient room and explained the hospitalist program and its positive impact on patient care.
Greg Ohe, Health Central Hospital president, welcomed guests to an insider look at cancer services at Health Central Hospital. Physicians Mickey Liao, MD, oncology/hematology, and Tomas Dvorak, MD, radiation oncology, guided a tour of the Infusion Center and the Radiology area of the 16,500-square-foot treatment facility that houses radiation oncology and medical oncology services, including radiation treatments, infusion treatments and chemotherapy.

1918 society Members Ken and Joan Clayton Also Give of Their Time and TalentsTo say that Ken and Joan Clayton have roots in the Orlando community may be an understatement. Ken, co-founder of Orlando law firm Clayton and McCulloh, was born at our own Orange Memorial Hospital and grew up in the area, graduating from Winter Park High School. Both Ken and Joan have served as elders at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. They raised their son and two daughters here, and the family has now grown to include eight grandchildren.
Ken and Joan Clayton have been 1918 Society members for several years, pairing their philanthropic giving with their personal commitment and service to the mission of the Orlando Health Foundation. A board member of the Foundation since 2002, Ken has chaired the Finance, Investment and Planned Giving Committee for the past four years. Joan has joined with other dedicated volunteers to host
luncheons, cultivation events and hospital tours to benefit ORMC and MD Anderson - Orlando.
Both Ken and Joan are advocates of the ORMC Level One Trauma Center, having attended many of the ONE NIGHT™ events. They also feel strongly about making others aware of the lifesaving services available to the community because of the Level One Trauma Center, and the philanthropic support needed to sustain it. In fact, Joan was involved since the very beginning, serving on the first ONE NIGHT Committee.
