& Health Foundation

The new C.A.R.E. Channel Programming for the inpatient televisions at WDH was recently funded through the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation.

One of WDH’s evening nurses recently spoke highly of this new program. “Thank you so much for Channel 80! It has been so helpful…When all else fails, the music and photography seems to soothe many of the agitated patients and is also a great non-narcotic sleeping aid alternative to the rest of the inpatient population. The entire night staff here on 2 South wishes to express our sincere thanks for this innovative idea.”

At the request of the Integrative Therapy Department the Foundation Board of Directors approved the purchase of the television programming for inpatient televisions. This programming is the only 24-hour, commercial free programming for patient televisions produced specifically to support a healing environment. Developed as a therapeutic tool, the program is designed to run on a designated channel for closed circuit broadcast and includes more than 72 hours of scenic nature video accompanied by soothing instrumental music.

Programming contains specific day and nighttime content to support the circadian rhythms. It has been shown that this type of programming improves patient outcomes and reduces noise disturbance to patients.

Demoulas Foundation Supports Breast MRI A $5,000 donation from the Demoulas Foundation was instrumental in bringing a new service to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital to support other modalities in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a supplemental tool, in addition to mammography, to help diagnose breast cancer. Breast MRI is often used to investigate breast concerns first detected with mammography, physical exam, or other imaging exams.

“We use this technology for patients for whom mammography alone is not sufficient,” said Albert Chang, MD, of Seacoast Radiology. “We use it for patients who are at increased risk for breast cancer and pre-operative and post-op screening.”

Since 2007, the Demoulas Foundation has donated $27,500 in support of Pediatric Programming, the Seacoast Cancer Center and now Imaging Services. Their support has truly made a difference in the quality of care provided for patients.

Foundation Awards 11 ScholarshipsThe Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation awarded 11 nursing scholarships totaling $16,175. The Edna Dube and Wentworth Hospital Nursing Scholarship Endowment Fund granted seven scholarships to WDH employed nurses pursuing advanced nursing educational opportunities. The recipients were: Patti Covel, RN, Karen Adams, RN, Deidre McNeil, RN, Kerri Fitzpatrick, RN, Lynda Murray, RN, Staci Porter, RN and Beata Umugwangwali, RN.

In addition, the Helen Garland Grant Nursing Endowment Fund granted four scholarships to employees that have decided to enter into nursing. The recipients were Beth Driscoll, Ashley Williams, Sarah Murphy and Thomas Vatistas. Congratulations to all. Both endowment funds only support existing WDH employees. The next round of scholarships will be awarded in July 2011.

November Night Celebrating Our Stars

at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital

The 15th Annual Pete Gabarro Memorial Golf Classic, held Sept. 14, 2010 at Cochecho Country Club, netted $50,000 to support Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Pete’s Place Grief Counseling Center and other children’s care projects.

An early and brief thunderstorm caused only a minor delay in play at this year’s sold out tournament. Pete Gabarro’s father, Ralph Gabarro, expressed his deep appreciation for the players and sponsors who participate year after year in the tournament in memory of his son. Pete Gabarro was a 12 year old Dover Junior High School student who lost his courageous battle with cancer in 1994.
