"[O Immaculate Mary], I wish you take possession, in the same way, of every heart that beats on the whole terrestrial globe, in the whole uni-verse, and this as soon as possible, as soon as possible, as soon as possible, I wish you to possess all hearts, to-gether and individually, of those who will live in the future, from the very first instance of their exist-ence for ever." It is easy to recognize an image of our Lord in the manger at Christmas, as well as when we look upon a crucifix. But when we look at the Consecrated Host, enshrined in the monstrance, is He as easily recognized? Pray for the gi of faith. The li le ba-by in the manger and the Man on the cross are images of Jesus Christ, but the One Who is in the monstrance is not an image, but the Real Presence of Jesus in His glorified body, hidden within the Consecrated Host. Take the opportunity to know Jesus a li le be er in His Eucharis c Presence so that He becomes more easily recognized.

Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament - Monday through Friday 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.

PRAYERS FOR PRIESTS

“Without priests we would have no Eucharist and without the Eucharist we have no Church.” --John Cardinal O’Connor

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf:

Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of union with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son.

Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Whenever we attend Holy Mass, let us remember to pray for the priest at the altar and all priests, asking God to bless them and make them holy. Here is a prayer to pray as the priest receives Holy Communion:

O Lord, may Thou find shelter and rest gently within the heart of Thy priest Fr. ___________. Make him, O Lord, a priest according to Thy heart: meek, humble, and zealous, so that all he does will be for Thine honor and glory. Mold him into a man of prayer and labor, insensible to earthly things, and sensible only to Thy love and to the graces of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

There is a saying by Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard that explains why we need priests who live a life of sanctity:

If the priest is a saint, the people will be fervent; if the priest is fervent, the people will be pious; if the priest is pious, the people will at least be decent; if the priest is only decent, the people will be godless. The spiritual generation is always one-degree less intense in its life than the one who begets Christ.

SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE CHURCH IN AFRICA

Thank you for your generous support of the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. Your contributions will provide pastoral care and support for the people of Africa as they face the many challenges that come from pov-erty, unemployment, disease, and migration. Your dona-tions will fund workshops, retreats, catechesis, and other projects that build the faith of African communities. If you missed the collection, it is not too late to give. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections, and click on the “How to Give” link on the left.

JOY IS A GIFT FROM GOD

Although some believers are deadly serious, most saints were not. Most of the saints were men and women whom others wanted to be around. Otherwise how else would they have founded all those religious orders? We love to be around people with a sense of humor. Joy, humor and laughter are constant threads through the lives of many of the saints, disproving the stereotype of the sour, depressed, grumpy saint. Tradition-ally, we relate to saints as patrons or companions. We ask for saint’s help, for his or her prayers in heav-en, just like you would ask a friend on earth for prayers. Those prayers are called intercessory prayers.

The companion saint provides us with a model of Christian life which we can follow on the path to holiness. So we can look to them as examples of those who led joyful, laughter-filled lives.

Padre Pio had a great sense of humor. He once quoted “Serve the Lord with laughter.” He at night would sit with the friars and share a few witty jokes. Once a man came up to him and said “I don’t believe in hell.” He replied “You will when you get there.”

The happiness of saints flows from their closeness to God and from their perspective on life that their faith brought them. They have lived out their heartfelt desire to follow God and so they found joy. There are so many stories of their lightheartedness, child-like playfulness, or sheer sense of joy. A zestful spirit! Hu-mor opens our minds.

Psychologists say that when we relax and feel less threatened, we are more able to listen, learn and be creative. Humor is a tool for humility when we can tell jokes about ourselves to deflate our egos. All of us can get puffed up at times, and humor is a good way for people to remind themselves of their basic human-ity, their essential poverty of spirit.

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos spoke of “Holy Hilarity” as a tool for spreading the gospel. For believers, hu-mor shows you trust in God, Who will ultimately make all things well. Joy reveals faith. St. Katharine Drexel said “Just attract them by joy in order to lead them to its source, the Heart of Jesus.” St. Philip Ne-ri said, “A heart filled with joy is more easily made perfect than one that is sad.” Saintly humor continues up until modern times. Pope St. John XXIII’s famous joke came when a journalist innocently asked him, “Your Holiness, how many people work in the Vatican?” Pope John paused, thought it over, and said “About half of them.”

Joy, humor and laughter should be a part of everyone’s spiritual life. These are gifts from God and help us to enjoy creation. If our lives on earth provide us with a taste of heaven, friends and families, finally relieved of any of the painful burdens of our physical bodies, sharing our happiness with the Saints and Angels, in the company of our loving God, who has prepared a place of eternal joy for us. God awaits us in joy with joy. People will say, “I want what he or she has.” So be joyful. Use your sense of humor. And laugh with God who smiles when seeing you, rejoices over your very existence, and takes delight in you, all the days of your life.

REFLECTIONS FROM ST. PADRE PIO

Pray, I beseech you to pray, for this is the greatest act of charity you can perform towards me…

The fact that you are continually harassed (by Satan) makes me re-joice…I see that God’s kingdom is being restored within you.

(The Lord) is with you in a special way when the battle is more pressing.

May Jesus and Mary be with you. May they set you free from the cunning snares of the Evil One and con-sole you in all your afflictions.

Let Satan wage war…for he can achieve nothing against your soul, which Jesus clasped to Himself and sustains by His ever-present grace.

The greater your sufferings the greater God’s love for you.

HOLY INNOCENTS BOOKSHELF

Daily Thoughts of the Little Flower

The work "Sainte Therese de L'Enfant Jesus," from which these thoughts are taken consists of the autobiography of the Little Flower, extracts from her po-ems and letters, and from the evidence submitted for her canonization. It is by far the most authentic record of her life

and teaching.

This booklet is pocket-sized, making it possible to carry it with you and open it whenever you like, whether upon rising to begin your day with a thought from Saint Therese, or at times of prayer throughout the day, or while waiting during a doc-tor's visit...anytime you would like to turn your heart and mind to God in the company and inspira-tion of this beautiful Saint, so completely in love with God.

LEGION OF MARY – REGINA MUNDI

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall follow-ing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more information on joining this ministry as an active or auxiliary member please contact James Hackett at: [email protected].

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We
