FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Mass Intentions

EASTER NOVENA OF MASSES

A nine day novena of Holy Masses in honor of Our Risen Lord will take place at Holy Innocents begin-ning on Easter Sunday and ending on the day after Divine Mercy Sunday. Cards and envelopes for this purpose are located throughout the church. Please return the envelope with the names of all those you wish to remember in this special series of Masses to the rectory, collection basket, or any of the offering boxes in the church by Holy Week so they can be placed on the altar for Easter. And present the Easter card to those you are enrolling in the Masses.

On Tuesday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m. a ‘Month’s Mind’ Requiem High Mass with absolution at the cata-falque will be offered for the repose of the soul of

former Holy Innocents’ Pastor (2007-20013), Rev. Fr. Thomas Kallumady, at 6:00 p.m.

***PALM SUNDAY NOTES***

1) Please note well that because of the length of the Palm Sunday Services in the Traditional Latin Rite, the Latin High Mass will be moved to 12:30 p.m. and the English Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on this Sunday only.

2) Because of the switch in Masses, there will be no Coffee Hour on Palm Sunday. The Coffee Hour will resume on Easter Sunday following the usual 10:30 a.m. Latin High Mass.

3) Vespers will not be sung on Palm Sunday. Vespers will resume on Easter Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

RULES OF FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

From antiquity, Christians have practiced penance on Wednesdays (the day Our Lord was betrayed) and Fridays (when Christ was crucified). Wednesdays and Fridays remain days of penance in most Eastern Catholic Churches (and among the Orthodox), and in some monastic and religious communities of the Roman Church. Catholics observe Fridays as weekly penitential days on which abstinence from meat and other forms are expected as the norm.

Days of Abstinence (obliges one to abstain from flesh meat. This does not apply to dairy products, eggs, or condiments and shortening made from animal fat. All cold-blooded animals may be eaten (e.g., frogs, clams, turtles, etc.))

Current Law: Obligatory at age 14 until death on Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Fridays including Good Friday. Recommended on Holy Saturday but not required.

Traditional: Obligatory at age 7 until death on Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Fridays including Good Friday as well as on Saturdays including Holy Saturday.

Days of Fasting (One full meal is permitted and two other meals may be taken which, when com-bined, are less than a full meal; no eating in between meals but liquids are allowed, including milk and fruit juices.)

Current Law: Applies to Catholics aged 18 to 59 inclusive, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only. Recommended on Holy Saturday but not required.

Traditional: All days of Lent including Holy Week except Sundays and Feasts of the 1st Class (Solemnities).

The more ancient (traditional) practices of fast and abstinence, while not obligatory, are praiseworthy. To be ex-cused from fasting/abstinence for pregnancy, hard labor, hypoglycemia, diabetics, etc., one should request a dispen-sation form his/her pastor. The obligation to fast and abstain is a serious one and should not be taken lightly! Penance serves to rectify our self-centeredness, to make up for sins (our own and those of others), to strengthen our wills and to guide us in the steps of our Savior. It can be a very pure form of love for God, and can be offered up for the conversion of sinners and the relief of the souls in Purgatory. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

The annual collection for Easter Flowers and decora-tions for the church will take place TODAY, April 7. Confessions will be heard in many parishes throughout these three dioces-es from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The confession sched-ule at Holy Innocents on Monday, April 15 will be: 7:30-8:30 a.m.; 12 noon-1:30 p.m.; & 3:00 - 7:30 p.m.

The Mass of Our Lady of Sorrows will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. (Low Tridentine Latin). A Holy Hour in hon-or of Our Lady of Sorrows consisting of the recitation of the 7 Sorrows Chap-let, Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy

Rosary and other prayers to the Sorrowful Mother will begin at 5:00 p.m. As usual the Stations of the Cross will follow the 6:00 p.m. Mass.

PASCHAL CANDLE DONOR

If anyone is interested in donating this year’s Paschal Candle, a symbol of the Risen Christ, please contact the Parish Office as soon as possible. The donation is $225.00. The name of the donor and their intention will be published in the Easter Sunday issue of the Par-ish Bulletin.

HOLY WEEK CEREMONIES 2019

As we have done for the past two years, the Tradi-tional Latin ceremonies of Holy Week will follow the pre-1955 rubrics. In the 1950’s many changes oc-curred to the ceremonies of Holy Week, causing a dis-harmony between Holy Week and the rest of the tra-ditional liturgy and removed rites that were celebrat-ed by the Church since time immemorial. Already comparing a hand missal from before 1950 and one after, one gets a good idea about some of the chang-es. Palm Sunday: the importance of blessed palms, their blessing resembles a Mass; the door knocking ceremony; the reading of the Passion, includes the account of the Last Supper and the guarding of the Holy Sepulcher. Holy Thursday: inclusion of the Creed. Good Friday: Mass of the Pre-Sanctified as opposed to a Communion Service. Holy Saturday: Procession with the Triple Candle; Exsultet-the blessing of the Easter Candle; the Prophecies; Blessing of the Baptismal Font; Vespers. For the remaining weeks of Lent, an insert will be included in the bulletin explaining the pre-1955 ceremonies of Holy Week. The articles have been written by Canon William Avis of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

HOLY THURSDAY PILGRIMAGE Join over 100 participants for the 14th Annual Walking Pilgrimage to seven area Catholic Churches on Holy Thursday, April 18, leaving from St. John the Baptist Church, West 30th St. between 7th & 8th Avenues at 8:45 a.m. The group will attend the 12:15 p.m. Holy Mass at Holy Innocents, have lunch in the Lower Church Hall, and continue their pilgrimage, eventually ending at the Church of the Epiphany on Second Avenue and E. 22nd St.

COVERING OF STATUES The season of Passiontide (last two weeks of Lent) prepares us for the days of the Sacred Trid-uum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Satur-day). In Passiontide, crucifixes, statues and sa-cred images (but not the Stations of the Cross) in the church are veiled in violet beginning this Sun-day and remain covered until the singing of the Gloria in excelsis Deo of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. The tradition of veiling statues during Passiontide comes from the Gospel passage from John 8 heard on Passion Sunday. At the end of the Gospel the Jews take up stones to cast at Je-sus, but Jesus mysteriously passes through the crowd unseen and then hides. The veiling also reminds us that Christ’s Divinity was hidden at the time of His Passion and death.

On this 40th anniversary, we are focusing the Cardinal’s Ap-peal entirely on keeping parishes healthy and vibrant. This means making sure underfunded parishes can afford to keep their doors open. It means training your future priests at Saint Joseph’s Seminary and caring for your beloved for-mer pastors at the St. John Vianney Center for Retired Priests. It means supporting our Catholic Schools, 128 of which are part of or located at parishes and provide a top-notch, Christ-centered education to almost 36,000 young people. Please join your fellow parishioners in stewardship and make your gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal today. Thank you to all who have already made your commitment – your generosity is truly appreciated!

LEGION OF MARY

Weekly Meeting of the Legion of Mary will be in the Parish Hall at 7:00pm every Monday,

following the 6:00pm Latin Mass

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gather at Holy Innocents by 10:00am. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We

will be located by the Time Square Shuttle downstairs. We recite 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:15. Come for all or

part of the Subway Rosary.

“For nothing, healed them, but thy word, o Lord, which healeth all things”

-Wisdom 16:12

In a recollection atmosphere, focusing on the Word of God and through live preach-ing, the listener is introduced to the faith and the love of God which leads to a per-sonal-living encounter with the Lord. As

quoted by St. Teresa of Avila “Prayer means being alone, frequently, with Him who we know loves us”.
