How I spent my summer vacation ( and a whole lot of money) by Steve Armstrong

Don’t ever believe that car shows are about the cars. It is about the people that love their cars and the camaraderie that follows their mutual goals. Kirk, Don-na, Sally and I drove to Tulsa Thursday evening in order to join everyone for the KC convoy. After a few minor miscues, everyone was soon in sync and purring along. (Note to Franca: Always plan at least twice the potty breaks you think you need.) We got there just in time for a great lunch at Joe’s BBQ and headed for the hotels. Not unusual, Kirk did not hear to join everyone at 4:00 to go as a group. Sal-ly then decreed that we had to be near Kirk and Donna so that was that. Then I was turned away for forgetting my fire extinguisher. So off to Wal-Mart and out of line. Then things got busy. Trying to get started on cleaning until the heat won. Then took Donna’s place at the Tailgate party. Had some really good eating, and then dashed out to the cars for an hour of prep in the cooler dusk air. In the morning, it was a bright and early start. Kirk and I worked on our cars until the judges meeting. Then it was out on the field after two hours of instructions and bringing everyone up to date on the newer rules. I was elated to find myself with a pair of great guys from Iowa that really knew their stuff. Not so elated that half of my assigned cars were club members. Luckily, our gang knows their stuff and we faired really good. After the judging was over, all the judges met for discussion of some upcoming changes. Among the topics, was the issue that Daily Drivers are handicapped by the current system. Be-cause of the method used, the range of points to trophy is less than ideal. For example, while the Oc-casional Driven classes are 0-2 pts Gold, 3-6 pts Sil-ver, and 7-10 pts Bronze, the DDs are 0-1pts Gold, 2-4 pts Silver, and 5-7 pts Bronze. The solution sug-gested will be put to the next board meeting. And a lot more proposals for most of the classes were pre-sented by groups to the late hours. Then first thing in the morning, everyone was back at new topics. One thing of note is that for the past few years, MCA has been building a data bank of information that is making the meets more efficient. We are finding when is the best time to have the volunteers so that there are not too few or too many. And vari-ous other new ideas, like having some classes doing day before judging. It will be a part of future na-tionals and may spread to other events. Over the next months and years, changes are coming to im-prove the owner’s experiences. It is going to be a great time for us, but we will have to make efforts to keep up with the changes.

MY FIRST RACE By Jerry L. Bergeron

Saturday, October 21, 2017 was my first World Racing League 8-hour endruo race followed by a second 8-hour race on Sunday. My one word description of my first race, would be “SCARY”! We were racing door to door with 44 cars wanting to use the same piece of real estate. Our GP4 car was the lowest horsepower of the 4 classes. I was off track more in 2 hours of racing than over the past 10 years in HST. Ten years of High Speed touring did not prepare me for the adrenaline rush.

How did I end up in a 1990 Spec Miata race car “Herbie”? When you have really good friends you get talked into doing crazy things. I was completely sober when Eric ap-proached me with his idea of putting an endruo race team together. Of course I said yes, but in the back of my mind I figured the chance of finding teo other fools was slim. Man was I wrong! Apparently there is an unlimited supply of men who are foolish. A month lat-er Eric has the car and four other men lined up for the team.

I could not be happier with the team Eric assembled. It was awesome being part of the “No Lift Racing” team. Don’t tell the rest of the team, but I did lift a couple of times. It was a situation of lift or go in early to change my race suit. The only team member with true racing experience was Bill. Eric, Mike and I were “novice racers”. We had additional help from Jessie, a friend of Eric’s, and our fireman, Bill’s son Erik. Not to mention our team mom, Cherie. Cherie made sure we hydrated, ate, rested and all that mom stuff.

Our only goal was to finish both 8-hour races and get a WRL racing license. We exceeded our goals. Saturday we ran the full eight hours and placed P5 in our class of 7 and overall placed P27 of 44. If you do the math we beat 10 cars in a higher class. We lost the 3rd gear synchro Saturday and decided to put thicker oil in the transmission and hope for the best Sunday. Sunday, Herbie held up for the entire eight hours. No Lift Rac-ing finished P4 of 7 and P18 overall of 37 cars. We did not get a podium finish or a trophy but were given special recognition. The pit crew next to us left their stall unmanned. Their driver pulled in with his car on fire five feet from their fuel supply. Erik grabbed our fire ex-tinguisher and had the fire out quickly. At the trophy presentation Erik was awarded the “We’ve got your 6” award.

I cannot thank my team enough, Eric, Mike, Bill, Jessie, Erik and Cherie. This was truly a grand experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. A special thanks to Eric Las-ner the heart & soul of the team. Looking forward to doing it all again!

Members. As promised I met today (10/27/17) with the Little Lighthouse representatives Jean, Rachel and Lindsay. GCCM presented them with a $1500 donation as s result of our 2017 Roundup. They were very appreciative and asked me to convey their gratitude to our membership. Members are always invit-ed to a monthly luncheon and tour of their facility and classrooms. You can call for dates. They help many children enter society that might otherwise be severely limited. You can all be proud for your help. Thank you. Roger Bymun.
