Engine Names? Who Knew?! During a great lunch visit with the Oklahoma Mustang Club, the question of engine names came up. Giving engines catchy names is a relatively new concept for Ford. And few really know about them. The most known of the engines is the Coyote 5.0L. Few know that the Boss version of the 5.0L of that same engine is the Road Runner. Or that the 3.7 V6 is the Cyclone engine. Most engines in the Mustangs had very mundane code names. Many of the engines were simply known by the factory that built them. The original Mustang used the Falcon Six and the Fairlane V8. Later, they added the FE big block to the lineup. FE stood for Ford-Edsel. One of the great engine families with a not so great name. It was phased out for the 335 and 385 series engines. After 1973, big blocks were no longer used in Mustangs. The 335 Engine was called the 351C. Since the Fairlane V8 also had a 351 cu. In. model, it became the 351W to identify it. From that point on, all of the Fairlane V8 variants became known the Windsor engine family. The Falcon Six went away with the 1974 Mustang II installing the Cologne 2.8L V6 as the option-al engine. For the first time in Mustang history there was not a V8 option. The base engine for the Mustang II was also a new experience, with the first straight four (the 2.3L OHC engine), code name LL23 or Lima engine. In 1975, Ford rectified their big mistake and redesigned the Mustang II engine compartment to hold the Windsor V8. The third generation (Fox) Mustangs had a large variety of engines. In 1979, demand for the 2.8L Cologne engine required Ford to return to the Falcon Six, now called the 3.3L. Another oil crises had Ford sleeving the 5.0L Windsor to create a 4.2L V8 for 1980-81 Mustangs. The per-formance options included a new to Ford Turbocharged version of the 2.3L Lima. Due to reliabil-ity problems and lack of knowledgeable service techs, the engine was not popular for daily driv-ers. Later, improvements like an aftercooler were added in the SVO models, but it was several decades before the public accepted the idea of a turbocharged engine. In the 1983 models, the 3.3L Falcon I6 was replaced with the 3.8L Essex V6 engine. With the SN95 model Mustangs (4th Generation), the 5.0L Windsor was replaced by the 4.6L Modular engine. Over the remainder of the SN95 production, this engine went through various incarnations. The last year of production saw the 3.8L Essex replaced with a 3.9L Essex V6. Spe-cial edition engines (351W/5.8L in 1995) and hand built 5.4L Modular engines in 2000, were used for the Cobra R SVT cars. Only 250 of the 1995 Cobra Rs were built and 300 of the 2000 Cobra Rs. The 5th Generation Mustangs saw the 4.6L Modular engine soldier on until 2010. The base en-gine was a return to the Cologne engine, but now as 4.0L.And a turbocharge version of the 5.4L Modular was added for 2007-09 in the Shelby GT500 edition cars. In 2011, the re-emergence of the Camaro forced Ford to revise its engines. The Duratec 37 re-placed the 4.0L Cologne engine. With the new Timed Induction Variable Cam Timing (TiVCT) heads, the engine produced 305 HP, matching the power of many of the previous 4.6L Modular engines. With the revised engine, it was given the name, the Cyclone engine. The 4.6L Modular was greatly upgraded, going to 5.0L and the TiVCT heads. It was a great improvement and given the name of the Coyote engine. A higher output version of the engine used in the 2012-13 Boss 302 cars was designated the Road Runner. The supercharged GT500 cars got an all aluminum version of the 5.4L Modular in 2011-12, and that was replaced with a supercharged version of the 5.8L Trinity engine in 2013. By Steve Armstrong

Car Show Etiquette There are written and unwritten rules at car shows and car meets. The first one being common sense. Car show season is coming. While most people who attend car shows are kind and considerate, a small percentage are not. They will do things that annoy or insult car owners, belittle their hard work, or even damage their vehicles. No one wants scratches on the car they spent HOURS polish-ing to a high gloss. Seriously – don’t touch the cars. The trouble is, most of us have said or done something that qualifies as being rude without realizing it or meaning to. So give the following a look and make sure your not "That person." Don’t Touch the Cars! Just don’t do it! Don’t lean on it. Don’t reach out and put your hands on it. Don’t accidentally brush it with your coat or bag as you walk by. Don’t back into it while you’re trying to take a photo of another car. Don't rub against it as your trying to squeeze between two cars, go around Just don’t do it. Mind Your Children Bringing a kid to a car show is wonderful thing, but your kids are your responsibility. They shouldn’t ever touch cars, throw toys that hit cars, sit in cars, sneeze on cars, stick their heads into cars and drip snot on the seats, etc. Don't let them throw dirt, rocks, toys, etc. Some people don't mind if the kid gets in the car but make sure it is okay before your kid climbs on or in a car, most people don't want fingerprints or candy stuck all over their car. Don’t Talk Trash You just spotted a terrible show car. It’s sloppy. It’s ugly. It’s not even clean. You roll your eyes, make snide comments, chuckle, tell your buddy what’s wrong with it, and move on. Here’s the thing: someone in the world loves that car like a member of the family. They don’t see the problems, the dirt, or the fact that it’s downright hideous. They see a beautiful machine worthy of endless attention…and they don’t need your disrespect. The same goes for the newer cars. It doesn't have to be 40+ years old to be beautiful, fast, expen-sive, have a lot of work into it. Not everyone can afford a show car and a driver or they love their car so much they prefer to drive it all the time. Unlike some, they made a big effort to come to the show, paid the entry fees, spent their time to do things to their ride, spent hours cleaning and polishing (or maybe not, you rat rod guys know what I mean) and subjected themselves to the public eye. They don’t deserve to hear trash talk…so if you can’t say anything nice, just don’t say anything. Maybe they are just getting started and wanted to show what they have started with or the mods they have done so far. Not everyone has a $200,000+ show car build by so and so. We all start somewhere. Watch for the Lenses! Tough to shoot photos when there is always someone in the way. There are always automotive photographers at cars shows, always someone that wants to get a picture of some nice ride. Some are there for fun and some are earning a living, news paper, magazine, etc. Don’t just ignore the photographers because you want a better look. Be polite and look around often and check that you aren’t messing up someone’s shot. Just as importantly, don’t walk into someone else’s shot. This is

more true now with the high quality cameras built into phones so pay attention to your sur-roundings. I see this a lot and deal with it a lot myself, it's not easy getting a clean shot. Be considerate of others. If your showing your car, don't crank your stereo. Some people enjoy the music already play-ing by the DJ or Announcer. They also want to listen to any information, door prize give away, contests, problems etc. that might come across the loud system. If your blaring you bazillion watt stereo, no one can hear it. Pick up your trash; don't just leave your nasty rags, empty cleaner or detail spray bottles, so-da cans, water bottle etc. Someone has to clean up after the event, most times it is the per-son that had to get there two hours before the show to set things up. They are hot, tired and ready to go home too. Very important, no matter what you think of the other cars, remember that a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears have gone into them. Someone has spent their hard earned money, time away from family or with someone special that might not be around anymore. In the end, we all share a passion about cars, we are all the same at the core. In the end, a little common sense and courtesy goes a long way to helping everyone enjoy the show. Hope to see you there!
