Although the weather prior to the convention was not kind to the Oregon daffodils, the weather was perfect during the convention and the fields of daffodils at Richard and Elise Havens' and at Bill and Diane Tribe's were spectacular. Despite unfavorable weather prior to the show, 2,326 blooms were entered in the show, plus eye-catching displays, by commercial growers from both the USA and overseas. The convention boasted a number of "firsts"! It was the first convention to offer a Thursday tour for those not involved in the show. It was (I think) the first convention to attract thirty overseas members, who came from six different countries: Australia, New Zealand, Nor- thern Ireland, England, Canada, and Netherlands. Thanks to Bill Tribe's expert budgeting and planning and Marianne Burr's highly successful Daffodil Boutique, the convention was also very successful financially with a surplus of $7355.31, of which the ODS retains 25 percent. ODS and convention co- chairmen, take a bow!

PORTLAND CONVENTION DRAWS 276 MEMBERS

By any standards, the 1994 ADS National Convention in Portland hosted by the Oregon Daffodil Society was a smashing success, reaching a remarkable total of 276 registrants. It was (I think) the first convention to attract thirty overseas members, who came from six different countries: Australia, New Zealand, Nor-thern Ireland, England, Canada, and Netherlands. WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

We extend a warm welcome to the following new ADS members in the Pacific Region:

Dixie Humphreys, 1410 E. Manhaton Dr., Tempe, AZ 85282 Mrs. Margaret Pansegrau, 312 Ellingson Rd., SE, Albany, OR 97321 Mrs. Mary Stovel, 522 Dayton, Edmonds, WA 98020 Michael Panas, 1224 Moss Rock Ct., Santa Rosa, CA 95404 Ms. Nancy Tackett, 066 Green St., Martinez, CA 94553

[DIE) YOU KNOW

...that the Pacific Region, with 172 members, ranks third in ADS membership behind the Middle Atlantic and Midwest Regions?

...that the Pacific Region had more new ADS memberships this year than any other Region?

Now let's all do our best to get more new ADS members. While the decline in ADS membership has leveled off, it is still a cause for concern. Some things we can do to get more people interested in daffodils are to give our excess bulbs to interested prospects, talk up the ADS at meetings of local societies, and display our daffodil blooms in Places where they will be widely viewed,

3 Jch as banks, supermarkets, local nurseries, and as educational displays at non-ADS flower shows. Also, let's be sure we have samples of the Daffodil Journal and other ADS publications on display at every daffodil show, with someone at the table throughout the show to recruit new members - not just for our local societies but for the ADS as well.

In addition, Kirby Fong, our indefatigable ADS Slides Chairman and Regional Director, found time in his busy schedule to transport daffodils all the way to Richmond, Virginia, and enter the Virginia Daffodil Society Show, where he won the ADS Green Ribbon. This is quite a feat considering that he was com-peting against such formidable local competitors as Bill Pannill and Delia Dankhead.

NeE5,, TOO.. CAN 6E AN AUTHOR!

Have you ever stopped to think that without members willing to write articles, there would be no Daffodil Journal? You do not have to be an international daffodil authority to write an article for the Journal. If you have infor-mation you think other ADS members would find of interest, then by all means, put it in writing and send it in to Lee Kitchens, editor of the Daffodil_ Journal. You do not need to be a polished writer or grow 500 varieties of daffodils to contribute an interesting article. But you do have to be willing to take the time to put your ideas in writing, type it up, and send it in. The Editor does prefer that your article be typewritten with double spacing and adequate margins. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated by the Journal Editor.

WASHIMTOM IDAP-P-011DIL GROUP FORMING

A group of daffodil enthusiasts in the Yakima, Washington, area are in the process of organizing a local daffodil society. At present they have nine members and are looking for more. They hope to stage their first show next spring in mid-April. We urgently needs some local daffodil societies in the state of Washington where the daffodil climate is second to none. I strongly urge all ADS members to support this new local group.

J .71LJEDGING SCI-KDOI__ I SCFIEIDULEID AT ALBANY

OCTOBER 15

Judging School I will be offered at the Linn County Fairgounds, Albany, Oregon, on Saturday, October 15, starting at 1:00 PM. This school does not require the use of flowers so is offered in the fall to speed up the process of becoming accredited. The subject matter to be covered includes classifica-tion of daffodils, color coding, anatomy of the daffodil, culture, pests, and diseases. Those taking the school for credit should obtain a copy of the Handbook for Growing, Exhibiting, and Judging Daffodils from the Executive Director of the ADS, Mrs. Mary Lou Gripshover, 1686 Grey Fox Trails, Milford, OH 45150. The price is $7. In preparation for this school, study Chapters 1 and 2, pp. 7-9 in Chapter 3, and Chapters 4 and 1-1 from this Handbook. The instruction will last approximately three hours and will be followed by the written exam. Instructors will be Elise Havens, Bob Spotts, and Stan Baird.

We urgently need more ADS judges in this Region and hope many of you will consider taking the judging schools. To become an accredited ADS judge, you must fulfill the following requirements:

Be a current member of the ADS. Pass all four ADS judging schools with a minimum score of 75 in each section. (You can retake sections which you do not pass.)

Grow at least 100 cultivars and/or species from at least eight divisions of the RHS classification system, including some miniatures.

Student judge three ADS approved shows with at least two accredited judges. Exhibit for at least three years and win at least three blue ribbons in ADS

approved shows.

PLEASE NOTE: These requirements must be met before receiving accreditation but do not necessarily have to be met before beginning the judging schools.

Anyone who wishes to do so may audit this or any other judging school free of charge. If auditing the school, you do not take the test. Auditing judging schools is an excellent way to learn more about growing and exhibiting daffodils. If taking the school either for credit or as an auditor, please complete the form below and mail it to the judging schools chairman, Evie Gullikson, on or before October 6.

JUDGES PLEASE NOTE: JUDGING SCHOOL I CANNOT BE USED AS A REFRESHER COURSE: However, Judging School II, which will be offered in Oregon next spring after the GDS Show, may be audited to meet your refresher course requirement.
