REGIONAL GEOLOGY
The Beardmore-Geraldton metavolcanic-metasedimentary (here
inafter the term "meta" is dropped) terrain is situated on the
boundary between the Quetico and Wabigoon subprovinces of the
Precambrian Shield. It comprises three belts of volcanic-
sedimentary rocks termed the northern, central and southern
metasedimentary belts (NMB, CMB and 8MB respectively). Local
mafic and felsic intrusives occur within the volcanic-sedimentary
sequences and are all cut by a number of sub-parallel, east-west
trending regional faults. Although the sedimentary sequence is
fault-bounded, the original sedimentary sequence was deposited on
a cratonic margin. The environments of deposition are varied and
range from alluvial fan-braid plain inthe NMB, through fan delta-
braid in the 0MB, to a marine turbiditic assemblage in the SMB
REGIONAL ECONOMIC GEOLOGY
The sedimentary belts play a significant economic role where
several gold deposits are located.
Southern Metasedimentary Belt (SMB)
In the SMB, the Leitch and Northern Empire gold deposits,
both near Beardmore, are hosted in steeply dipping quartz vein
systems; the; former in sediments and the latter in maf icvolcanics.
The MacLeod Cockshutt and Hard Rock Mines near Geraldton, consist
of quart/ stringers in iron formation and quartz veins associated
with felsic intrusives. The Solomon Pillars near Jellicoe,
consist of quartz stringers associated with iron formation.
Regionally, structural relationships between fault systems
and lithologic contacts are important to these deposits.
Central Metasedimentary Belt (CMB)
There are several precious and base metal occurrences, for
example, the Harte property, that occur within the CMB. The
characteristic features which prevail amongst other precious and
base metal deposits, as described above, occur within the belt.
Historically, little exploration activity in the area, has stifl
ed the economic potential which may exist in this belt.
Northern Metasedimentary Belt (NMB)
This type of limited exploration interest is best demon
strated in the NMB where the Metalore gold deposit exists. This
deposit is the first known deposit to the NMB. Although many
other precious and base metal occurrences occur along its 50
mile strike length (as the volcanic rocks on the Harte property),
very little exploration activity had been reported in this belt.
Geologically, the Metalore deposit is localized along a sheared
contact between polymict conglomeratic-sandstone units and
pillowed mafic volcanics. A diorite intrudes the volcanics and
has caused incipient deformation, alteration and mineralization in
the sediments and volcanics.A splay fault, from theregional Paint
Lake Fault separates the sediment-volcanic units on the property.
1C
Property Geology
The Blackwater Claim Group is underlain by a distinctive
ruetavo] cani c- metased imentary sequence. The Northern Blackwater
Sequence is located from the north shore of Blackwater Lake to
Provincial Highway 11. It appears to be lingering in a large
mass of turbiditic greywackes and is revealed in the airborne AEM
and magnetometer surveys. It is characterized by massive and
minor pillowed mafic volcanics, interbanded east-west striking
greywackes and iron formations. The sedimentary sequence has
been intruded by dioritic masses of irregular shapes or as dikes.
Several splay faults (from the regional Watson Lake Fault) occur
on the property and has been displaced from the regional Watson
Lake Fault downward by dextral movement by the Barbara Lake
Fault. This part of the greenstone terrain is characterized by
minerals of lower greenschist facies metamorphism. Gold was
encountered in pyrite and arsenopyrite occurring within quartz
vein stockwork, within iron formation and quartz stringers
concordant to iron forma t: i on beds.
INTRODUCTION
A geobotanical survey was completed over a portion of the
Blackwater Lake property during the month of February of 1991,
for F'ounder Resources Inc.. Ninety-two wood core samples were
collected and analysed for thirty-five elements. The purpose of
the program was to evaluate the data and determine the associated
anomalies which occur with gold.
LOCATION AND ACCESS
The Blackwater Lake property is located along Provincial
Highway 11, 220 km northeast from the city of Thunder Bay at the
town of Jellicoe, (Figure 1). The property is accessible at
Provincial Highway 11 and bush roads lead to many parts of the
gr id .
PREV]OUS WORK
Early workings on the Blackwater property dates back as far
as 1917. Sporadic surface and near surface work was performed on
the claims i ri the early 1960's with trenching, geology, ground
geophysics, and limited diamond drilling. No work was done on
the property until 1986 whereby, an airborne geophysical survey
was completed followed by linecutting, geology, and mechanical
2
stripping. These programs are summarized in the amended July 18,
1991 Orequest report.
GEOBOTANICA1, SURVEY
TOPOGRAPHY AND TREES
The area is dominated by outcropping along gentle hills/
however, the far eastern and southern parts of the grid are
rugged with seventy-five foot relief. Swamp cover is minimal and
the average overburden appears not to be more than 20 feet in
thi ckness.
The area was timbered during the 1930's, therefore, few
jackpine and spruce remain on the property. The tree types which
were used for sampling are the following: Pinus bankslana Lamb.
(Jackpine), Picea glauca (Moench) Voss (White Spruce), Picea
mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. (Black Spruce), Abies balsames ( L.) M ill.
(Balsam Fir), Thuja occidental is L. (Eastern White Cedar), Larix
laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch (Tamarack), Populus tremuloides Michx.
(Trembling Aspen), Populus balsamifera L. (Balsam Poplar) and
Betula papyrifera Mfirsh. (White Birch). Other tree types which
were unsuitable for sampling due to their small size but occur on
the property include the following: Alnus rugosa (du Roi) Spreng.
(Alnus incana (L.) moench) (Specled Alder), Sorbus americana
Marsh. (American Mountain-Ash), Sorbus decora (Sarg.) Schneid.
(Showy Mountain-Ash), Amelancier Med. {Serviceberries), Acer
spicatum Lam. (Moutain Maple) and Fraxinus nigra Marsh. (Black
Ash) .
SAMPLING AREA
The samples were taken along the baseline between the lines
1,55-1 OOE and L67450E at 100 foot intervals or less. The sample
location is shown in Figures 2 St 3 , approximately 1,000 feet
north of Blackwater Lake. The area is described as partially
within a spruce, cedar swamp fringed along the east and south by
sandy jackpine terrain.
SAMPLING METHODS
Trees which were selected for the survey were those trees
with trunks of twelve inches or more in diameter, and located
near or at outcrop areas or slopes of hills where probable tap
root and lateral root system appears to be stressed. A twelve
inch Suunto wood borer was used to bore into the trunk of the
tree at approximately A f eet from the buttressed base. The
samples were subsequently divided into two, that is, the heart-
wood and sapwood-bark. The sample size for each the heartwood and
sapwood-bark was on the average 0.6 dry grams. Wood core samples
were handled at all times with gloves.

ANALYTICAL METHOD
The samples were crushed according to standard laboratory
methods, and then analysed using the neutron activation analysis
technique. Detection limit for Au was 0.1 ppb and Ir was ana
lysed in ppb level. Other elements were detected within the ppm
range (See Appendix 1). The 35 elemental package which was chosen
includes: Au, Ag, As, Ba, Br, Ca (*), Co, Cr, Cs, Fe ( *) f H f, Hg,
Ir, K (M, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb,Sb,Sc, Se, Sr, Ta, Th, U, W, Zn, La,
Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu. Copper and lead were not analysed
due to the limited sample quantity and the element Cu requires
separate radiation and Pb does not radiate. These two elements
were excluded from the analysis.
RESULTS
Four samples indicated anomalous gold occurring within the
heartwood and sapwood-bark of jackpine, poplar and cedar trees.
The ariomal ies occur along the baseline at lines 55 + OOE, 59400E,
64-iOOE^ and f.^SOE. Background in the heartwood samples is 13 ppb
and within the sapwood-bark 7 ppb. The anomalies in the heartwood
range from 2 to 25 times above background. The anomalies in the
sapwood-bark range from 2 to 11 times above background. There
appears to be a concentration within the older heartwood than
p.fjpwood for the element gold. The results are shown in Plates l
and 2.
The elements which are not associated with Au in this
specific 1,200 feet of the mafic metavolcanics are Co, Hf, Fe,
Nd, Se, Se, Sr, Ta, W and Yb (Plates 35 to 52). The elements
which are associated with Au are As, Ba, Ce, Gr, Cs, K, La, Mo,
Na, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sm and Zn (Plates 3 to 34). Summary of the
results is provided as follows:
Ar, ( Plate 3,4)
Bc-jckyround level for heartwood samples is 0.07 ppm and sapwood-
bark samples 0.10 pprn. Anomalies of two and three times above
background occur over the Au anomalies. This may suggest the
presence of arsenopyrite, which was found during the mechanical
stripping program in area 4 (see page 40 of Orequest report).
Ba (Plate 5,6,7)
Background level for heartwood samples is 16 ppm and sapwood-bark
samples 17 pprn. One sample indicated an anomaly of two times
above background occurring along the baseline 64 + 50E.
Ce (Plate 8,9)
Rack ground level for both heartwood and sapwood-bark samples is
0.15 ppm. One sample indicates an anomaly over one of the gold
r.howings of 4 times above background, located at L55 + OOE.
Cr (Plate 10,11)
Background level for heartwood samples is 1.2 ppm and for sap-
wood-bark samples is 1.4 ppm. Three samples indicated 3 to 4
times above background occurring with the Au showing on L59+OOE.
Cs (Plate 12,13)
Background level for heartwood samples is 0.04 ppm and for
sapwood-bark samples is 0.06 ppm. Two samples indicated 2 to 5
times above background over two of the new Au showings.
K (Plate 14,15)
Background level for heartwood samples is Q.08% and for sapwood-
bark samples is D.06%. Four samples occur over the gold showing
at 64-tOOE arid 64 + 50E and indicate anomalies of 2 to 4 times above
background levels.
La (Plate 16,17)
Background level for heartwood and sapwood-bark samples is 0.06
ppm. Four anomalies ranging from 2 to 8 times above background
occur over the Au anomalies.
Mo (Plate ]8,]9)
Background level for heartwood samples is 0.13 ppm arid sapwood-
bark samples is 0.12 ppm. One sample indicated an anomalous 5
times above background over the Au occurrence located at 64+50E.
Na (Plate 20,21,22)
Background level for heartwood samples is 81 ppm and sapwood-bark
samples is 69 ppm. Sodium depletion is a well documented associa
tion with gold. Thus a Na depletion halo occurrs over three of
the Au showings.
Ni (Plate 23,24,25)
Background level for heartwood samples is 5 ppm and sapwood-bark
samples is 6 ppm. An anomaly of three times above background
occurs over the principal Au showing, possibly indicating the
presence of pyrrhotite and pyrite.
Rb (Plate 26,27)
Background level for heartwood and sapwood-bark samples is 2 ppm.
Anomalies of 2 to 5 times above background occur over the showing
located at 644OOE and 64450E.
Sb (Plate 28,29,30)
Background level for heartwood and sapwood-bark samples is 0.02
ppm. Anomalies of 2 to 3 times above background occur over the
gold showing located at 59+OOE, 64+OOE and 64+50E.
Sm (Plate 31,32)
Background level for the heartwood and sapwood-bark samples is
0.002 ppni. Anomalies of 2 to 17 times above background occur over
two of the gold showings located at 59+OOE and 64+OOE.
Zn (Plate 33,34)
Background level for the heartwood samples is 14 ppm and sapwood-
bark samples is 17 ppm. One anomaly of 2 times above background
occurs over the 55+OOE location. This may suggest the presence
of sphalerite mineralization.
CONCLUSIONS
A new gold horizon was located using the geobotanical
survey. The major, minor and tracer elements associated with
gold located within the sample area are As, Ba, Ce, Cr 7 Cs, K,
La, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sm and Zn.
