February Ladies’ Luncheon

&

Meeting

St. Patrick’s Day was the theme for the luncheon

hosted by the ladies from Parkhaven. The hostesses

were surely wearin’ the green to carry out their

theme as they served “Irish” stew and a green jello

salad.

Everyone had a good time being entertained by the

Sunshine Gals as they played their instruments and

encouraged everyone to sing along.

At the meeting Joan Read did a presentation on

what the Stitched With Love group makes. Many

items were displayed. It was voted to donate money

to the group to help defray the cost of materials

used for the many items they create.

This has been a very busy time at Fountain East

with so many activities and meals. We thank all

those who stepped up to chair an event.

Our neighbors to the north

experienced a taste of our

neighbors to the south at the annual

Canadian dinner on February 19.

Carolyn Taylor did all the cooking

for the dinner which was a taco

buffet with all the fixings and sides. Margret

Atwood did the desserts. Place favors included bags

of “Cheezies” (a snack you can only find in Canada)

provided by Murray Olsen.

Keeping up with the hearty appetites was not an

easy job but helpers Betty Hansen, Audrey

Brewster, Ed Vitez, Carolyn Taylor and Patty

Maxson made sure that everyone had plenty to eat.

It’s a tried and true recipe that

never fails and was enjoyed by 80

residents on February 23. Thank you

Brenda Brooks and team (Doreen

Brown, Barb Bemis, Margret Atwood,

Connie Peters, Betty Rodgers, Lois Sebesta, Betty

Hansen, Audrey Brewster and Betty Copas) for

stewing up this meal function.

March 9, decked out in their yellow suspenders to

honor Ralph Sager (seated center), the bocce ball

teams assembled. The jack was thrown. Balls rolled

down the court. In the end, the winning team was

Norris Breitbach, Merlin Boenig, Ralph Sager and

Larry Wadle. Congratulations!!

Once again Tracy and Mike Nicholson,

with their trusty crew, outdid

themselves. 115 residents lined up for

deep fried halibut, baked salmon and

moose chili on March 10.

There was no shortage of side dishes and desserts

to round out the meal.

The final dance of the season had the “Come Back

Buddy” band playing to a full house of throwback

teenagers who rocked, twisted, bopped, strolled, and

line-danced the night away. It was a great way to

end the season! There were poodle skirts and

saddle shoes, rolled up jeans, pony tails and lots of

good fun and laughter.

Each Monday morning there is a group of people who

meet in the clubhouse, bring their sewing machines,

This is the Stitched With Love group. They

newborns, to make their entry into the world so

much more comfortable. Some of the items made

and donated include knitted hats, pediatric quilts,

flannel blankets, car seat covers, nursing covers,

memory bags as needed for families to take

keepsakes home in. In addition most of the scraps

Pasta Dinner

March 23

The annual Fountain East

Shuffleboard Tournament was

held March 15th under the

blazing Arizona sun. There were

30 participants.

The overall winner of the tournament was Charlie

Paxton, with Norris Breitbach taking 2nd, Bob

Barrett in 3rd and Dick Wadle took 4th place. Lowell

Klatt was the winner of the Toilet Bowl Trophy with

“the crappiest performance” and a score of only 10

points.

Fortunately by starting early at 8am, we were able

to “beat the heat” and complete the Round Robin

tournament totally, including the championship game,

before our luncheon.....pizza, salad and ice cream

bars chaired by Judy Verhulst and Heather Bruni. A

big thank you to Mario Bruni and Merlin Koenig for

managing the tournament.

Big Grill BBQ March 18

It was new and it was great!! Ribs, lots of sides and

finishing with rice pudding and/or ice cream. Over

150 residents and guests were licking their fingers

and making those “mmmm” noises. Thank you Merlin

Koenig and Dan Hungle for chairing this event and to

all your help for efficiently serving such a large

group.

Served family-style, the

Italian rigatoni casserole

dinner accompanied by

Caesar salad and hot

Italian bread was a hit

for the 60 who came and

enjoyed. The special

treat at the end of the meal was handmade cannoli.

Molte grazie Brenda Brooks for your wonderful

and innovative dinner.
