Four Important Tools Every
Gardener Needs.
Gardening is a fantastic hobby. The satisfaction of growing
things by your own hand as well as a bit of the outdoors life
thrown in all year round. It’s good for gentle exercise too
with mowing the lawn, digging, weeding, watering and other
maintenance tasks. If you are starting out on your gardening
adventures then you will need to take a little time to set
yourself up with the four basic tools you need. We will look
at an overview of these in the paragraphs which follow.
There is no great need to rush to the local gardening store and buy up everything you see. Nobody
should run before they can walk. Do not buy more to start with than you need. For everyday, basic
tasks to get you on your way then all you need to start with are the basics: a space for digging, a rake
for gathering up leaves, grass cuttings and similar and a hoe to help with weeding tasks. Other tools
and implements you can acquire as you progress so a spade, rake, fork and hoe should be sufficient
for the beginner.
Ask the staff at the gardening store for advice. Explain to them that you are new to the hobby, the
type of garden you have (or would like to have), the space you have available, what you are
intending to grow and other pertinent information. The staff will then be able to give you some
helpful pointers and talk through options with you.
If you’re thinking about taking your gardening seriously and getting out there every day to increase
the attractiveness of your garden, then you will want to get the right tools to help you in this. You
might be tempted to go out to the store and just buy the nearest things you see, but you’ll be much
happier if you put lots of thought into the styles and types of tools you’re buying. There are styles
designed just for gardening, and you’ll be better off buying those. Often the staff will be keen
gardeners themselves and only too eager to pass on their knowledge.
A spade is the workhorse tool for all gardeners. Does all the digging. There are different types of
garden space meant for different tasks though to dig a hole to plant something, you need a spade. A
good fork compliments a spade for digging. The garden fork helps to break up and loosen the soil
which in turn makes digging easier. Smaller forks are available for more intricate work around plants
and for uprooting weeds for example. A spade and a fork will help you greatly with the more manual
gardening work.
A rake is another basic gardening tool to get. Again, different types and sizes are available. Look for
one which is best suited to the size and type of garden you have. If needed for gathering up lawn
cuttings then a lawn rake is what to get. If it is needed for more general all-round needs then a
gardening rake is needed. Check out what is available and ask advice from the gardening store staff.
Finally, a hoe is another basic gardening tool you will need. Used to help break up and finely
manicure soil around plants with more refinement and control than a fork or rake. The hoe is also
good for weeding.
As you progress with your gardening you will most likely find that you need other tools for specific
tasks however to get you on your way a good spade, fork, hoe and rake should be enough to start
with.
There is more you can do in your garden other than grow flowers, plants or vegetables. Why not
consider the introduction of a simple garden wormery. Quick, easy and cheap to set up, a wormery
can help with recycling both garden and food waste with the worms turning it in to natural, organic
compost you can use on your garden as an alternative to the expensive stuff you would otherwise
have to buy. So you save money too.
