ABOUT MONARCH SCHOOL Currently there are more than 23,000 homeless students in San Diego County. Monarch School’s role in the community is to serve students impacted by the most severe cases of chronic homelessness and address the related academic disrupon they have experienced. Monarch students live in shelters, motels, in vehicles with their families, or doubled-up with other families. They’ve oſten been absent from school for long periods of me and are achieving below grade level when they enroll. Monarch removes barriers typically encountered by homeless students and provides programs and services not offered at tradional schools. Monarch has served San Diego County for 30 years, beginning as a one- room educaon center in 1987 and evolving into a K-12 school offering a comprehensive program designed to educate homeless youth. Monarch accomplishes its mission by providing student services to support learning in academics, social and emoonal growth, and life skills. Monarch School is a public-private partnership between the San Diego County Office of Educaon and the nonprofit Monarch School Project. ACADEMIC SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LIFE SKILLS We will learn to discover the leader within, express ourselves in empowering ways and recognize our inherent value. We will learn to be aware of our emoons, understand our response to those emoons, and pracce posive behaviors. We will learn to be creave, collaborave and resourceful problem solvers who think crically and apply what we learn in school to all aspects of our lives. We will learn to set achievable goals, gather resources to support those goals and execute a plan to accomplish those goals.
