As i n previous years, ccmzunlcahl e disease was the ~lo! cause at

11lnS GS ~ona the etudent s. I t sent 480 students to the oopltal for

a total of 2717 9 a."ld cauGed the ea th of threo men a."l1 t·{ .. o women

1n the p r l lll8 of 11te . THo women and two tWn died of pnoumonia ccmplica ted

fraD influenza; one man of typhoid f ever.

Table VII snows the monthly d1etr l bution and total hospital days

resulting from cQmmunicable disease , non- contagi ous , and o~ observation

cases. Chart II I portrays di agrammat ically the compara tive dist ributi on

or the sick days eJDlong the student s entering the University Hospital .

Ch t IV is interesting i n that it aham. a. prosonce or influenza

in every month of thG academic year. Its ab sence in December was due

to the closing of the Univer sity for the Christmas recess in the f irst

week of the month. Jonuary I February and. ' ch were the J:lontha i n wbich

tb~ hospital W4a or greateat serv i ce to the student s . ( See Chart V) .

This increase of illness wa s tm.i nly due to i nfluenza..

TYPHOID FEVER.

There were t our cases of typhoid f ever ong the s t udents and one

death. The f a.tal case occurred in October ; the other; 1n lJarch and

~ r1l . Carotul nvest1 gat1on f a i l ed to reveal a c~on source of in-

t ection. There waG no evi~ence to 1nc.1cato thDt one caee resul t ed

from the other. No cOl""..nec ti on could be t r aced be tween ~ of these

tiona, and made uneventful r ecoverie s . It s occurrence was no t surprising

DIPHTHERIA.

There wore four cases of diphtheria trea t ed a t the University

Hospital . These were detected by bacteriol ogica l examinations, befor e

serious symptoms were pr esent. The prompt ~dnanist ratian of ant itoxin

was folle-.... ed by r epid reoovery. Four cases and twenty- two hospital ~s

are the laNest reoord f or this disease .

These diaons8o a re considered together becnue8 chicken pox 1n ~

adult 19 ette confused with scall pox. It haa been the poli cy ot the

Health Service to advise vaccination whenever an unvaccinated student

has been exposed t o suspected chicken pox. Thio tends to reduce the

unvaccina ted in tho University populat i on Wld to insure a.gainst d1s-

agreeable surprises in the case of ~~ error in diagnosis.

Our stati stics are based on an attecpt a t differentia tion by local

when all acute r espi r a tory ai~nt8 present ing influenza- like s~toma

were called "flu".

The Health Service has maintained fir s t aid cabinet s at readi ly accessible

pOin ts th roughout the buildi ngs on the campus. They have been much sed and have

been of service to tlla stude nts, members of the facult y and employees wh o have baen

injure • e have found it necessary to place t he c3b lneta under the care ot
