FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “COME TO ME ALL YOU WHO LABOR AND ARE BURDENED…” JULY 5, 2020
Today’s Gospel Reflection—Matthew 11: 25-30 Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel comes after a discourse in which Jesus reproaches people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gospel explains the reason for this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our under-standing of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did.
Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who has made himself known to the “little ones” and not to the wise and learned. As in other recent read-ings from Matthew’s Gospel, a contrast is made here between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.
The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us.
In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusa-lem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In con-trast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful. Additional Readings and Reflections at www.loyolapress.com

God of Promise, many of us have trouble discerning the Living Christ in our lives. Use these gifts to quiet the traf-fic and turmoil of life’s stresses. Enable us through our faithful giving to discover a deeper reverence for Jesus’ gentle and humble message. Lift our heavy burdens, so we can prayerfully respond to the peace and the calm re-pose that you provide for us today and forever. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

CONTRIBUTIONS-EXPENSES FOR JUNE 2020 Contributions-Ingresos $ 24.203.55 Expenses-Gastos $ 30,279.68 Loss-Perdidas $ 6,076.13 We thank all of you that have continued to support your parish during these challenging and difficult times. As you can see we are still short of our goal to cover our expenses. This situation will most likely continue longer than we have expected. We ask you to please continue to make your donations as you have in the past and if you have not been tithing, we humbly ask that you start by giving back to God a portion of the blessings he has given to you. If you have been laid off from work and at this time must suspend your tithings, we understand. We have cutback on new expenditures as well and are looking at ways to continue reducing our expenses.
Thank you again, and God bless each and everyone of you. Rev. Salvador Pedroza

Trusting Faith Do not be afraid; just have faith. Mark 5:36
Do not be afraid? Sometimes that’s hard to do, especially when you’re in a difficult situation that you’re not sure you can handle. Can you remember such a time in your life? Having faith in Christ doesn’t mean that we will always be spared from life’s difficulties, but it does mean that we can count on Christ to help us through them. Jesus promised that he would always be with us, and that promise is a powerful sign of his never-failing love. His help flows out to us through his love, and it’s our faith in Jesus that opens us up to receive what he wants to give. Without faith, the door to our hear remains shut, and as some have experienced, that’s not a very good feeling. Much better is the feeling of peace that comes from a trusting faith! We need only to ask for this pre-cious gift that transforms our life. Lord, help me to trust in you. Fr. Kenneth E. Grabner, C.S.C.
