At Wakefield College, our learners are at the heart of all we do and we recognise that everyone has different ambitions and needs.We offer a fantastic choice of courses for 14-16 year olds and some of the best training facilities in the region, alongside high-quality teaching and superb levels of

support. Our ultimate aim is to help young people in the area succeed and achieve their full potential.This prospectus is designed to give members of staff in schools an idea of the wide range of courses available to 14-16 year olds at the College as part of our offsite learning curriculum. We teach across three campuses and aim to engage, stimulate, and inspire young people. We also offer guaranteed post-16 progression opportunities to the young people who participate in our courses. We are agile, forward-thinking, and are always looking to further develop our relationships with partner schools. Working with our partner schoolsWe have over a decade’s experience working with our partner schools to provide part-time and full-time programmes for 14-16 year olds that are dedicated to encouraging and enabling the continued participation of young people in education and training.We’re committed to working in partnership with local schools to support learning, attainment, achievement, and progression in the local area. We also welcome applications from the parent/carers of children who are home educated, and aim to offer a quality alternative curriculum experience.In September 2016, there were over 200 learners of compulsory school-age participating in a range of 14-16 programmes with us. We still feel strongly that our courses are relevant for children at Key Stage 4, despite working in an environment when Attainment 8 and Progress 8 have taken the emphasis away from vocational learning.Our 14-16 programmes offer schools a meaningful and challenging alternative curriculum which helps the development of young people while keeping them engaged in education and providing a clear pathway

into post-16 education. Last year 72% of Year 11 students progressed from our school-link provision to post-16 study with us – a figure we’re very proud of.This publication features information on our Early College Transfer (ECT) and Step Up programmes. Also included are our more recent school link introductions: Pre-ECT programme, Vocational Carousel Tasters, and the FLEX Transition Programme. All aim to support the transition of students from KS4 to post 16 education.We’ve also introduced a Young ESOL programme which supports schools in providing an intensive English programme for young people in Years 10 and 11 for whom English is not their first language. We aim to develop their skills in order to support their progression to post-16 study.This is by no means all that we can offer. We also seek to be flexible and if you have an idea of how we can support your school and students, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you.

Our school liaison offer for this year has been refreshed and includes a range of activities that we would like to work on with schools collaboratively. We offer a vast number of taster sessions, competitions, and other school liaison activities that are available to school-age learners in all of our subject areas. The sessions are usually delivered at our campuses, however in some cases we can deliver them in school, and aim to give young people an exciting and challenging first experience of our College and motivate them to apply for a programme of study when they leave school. In addition to the activities listed, we offer discovery days and campus tours throughout the year and are happy to deliver presentations and taster activities in schools. What next?Requests for places on ECT programmes can be made to the 14-16 Programme Coordinator from February 2017. Applicants will then be assessed for suitability for their chosen course by our tutors, and will be required to undergo an interview and initial assessment prior to selection onto the ECT programme. Selection is dependent on commitment from the applicant to attend their interview and enrolment appointments. The support of schools and information sharing is also essential to support the young person during their College course.

Early College Transfer (ECT) - Year 11 students

What is it?The Early College Transfer programme (ECT) aims to offer students and schools a challenging alternative curriculum for a specific group of learners.It provides students who may be disengaged in mainstream school, or for whom school is not considered to be the best option, the opportunity to complete their final year of school with us at College. The provision is also suitable for elected home educated students.ECT is a full-time provision where students attend College for 3 days each week and are in-filled into a post-16 group in a vocational subject area of their choice – typically at Level 1.Learners will combine this subject with Functional Skills qualifications in Mathematics and English. The student will remain on the school roll and the home school are responsible for organising any additional learning or work experience for the learner on days when they are not in College.

Who is eligible?The ECT programme is ideal for students who are eager to pursue a post-16 vocational pathway and it provides them with a head start and a guaranteed progression route into post-16 study, subject to successful completion and compliance with agreed behaviour and attendance requirements.The programme has seen many successes over the last 10 years and helped to keep school-age learners engaged in education.We welcome referrals and references from Heads of Year 10/11 and parents of Elected Home Educated students for students looking to follow a vocational pathway in a mature and new environment.

Our animal care teaching team is made up of experts in a variety of fields including veterinary nursing, care of exotic species, animal breeding, animal science and conservation. We have a permanent collection of exotic and mammalian species and a number of breeding programmes.

What you will studyModules studied may include:• safe and effective working practices in land-based

industries• develop performance in land-based industries• assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of

animals• assist with the movement, handling and

accommodation of animals• introduction to wildlife and conservation• animals in the wild and in society• industrial experience in land-based industries

How you will learn and be assessedYou will study in a realistic animal care environment that includes a range of small mammals and exotic animals, and take part in visits and field trips to access a larger variety of animals. There is an online, multiple choice test for one of the units while the remaining units will be observed or have written assessments.

Careers and further studyThis qualification will provide opportunities for employment as a pet store assistant, cattery or kennel assistant, stable hand, wildlife rehabilitator or charity animal care assistant. You can progress to our Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, followed by the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management in partnership with Askham Bryan.

This is a mostly practical course where you’ll develop your artistic knowledge and skill, confidence, communication, presentation skills and create a varied body of work. Throughout the year there will be various visits to art galleries and other places relating to your studies.

What you will studyYou’ll be introduced to basic skills including drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D design. You’ll gain some understanding of a variety of art and design areas including printmaking, textiles, and graphic design. Looking at the work of other artists and designers will be the starting point of every project and you’ll also develop research skills.

How you will learn and be assessedYou’ll learn through practical sessions in our specialist workshops and studios. Your work will be continually assessed by your tutor.

Careers and further studyAfter finishing this course, you can progress to a higher level course which would allow you to find work in a wide range of related areas.

If you’re interested in a career in construction but aren’t sure whether you wish to follow the craft route or the building services route, this course is ideal for you.If you choose to study the building services pathway, you’ll gain an introduction to both plumbing and electrical installation. If you choose the construction pathway, you’ll learn about bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, ground-works, electrical installation, and plumbing. These skills will be developed both in college workshops and projects outside College.

What you will studyIn classroom sessions you will look at the sector and gain an insight into the employment opportunities that are available. You’ll study health & safety to ensure that your working practices are safe. You’ll also develop your team building skills.

How you will learn and be assessedThe course is 60% practical work and 40% theory work and you will learn through demonstrations, and activities in the classroom and workshop. Assessment is continuous throughout the year. Your learning will be extended to outside of College with trips to local suppliers or construction sites and places of interest.

Careers and further studyYou could progress to further study in construction to further your knowledge and increase your future job prospects.

The course provides you with knowledge and skills to work and progress in many areas of the creative media sector, including; Film and Television, Photography, Audio Production, Games Design and Graphic Design. This is an ideal foundation for those interested in interactive and multimedia.

What you will studyYou will be introduced to basic media skills, through a range of principles such as photography, film & TV, animation, graphic design and audio production. Looking at the work of industry professionals will give you inspiration for your projects which will be able to prepare you to work in the industry in the future after further study. You will have the opportunity to be creative, innovative and independent when producing your final pieces.

How you will learn and be assessedThe course will be delivered through a series of workshops and practical sessions. You will be given class time to complete assignments with some assignments taking you on location outside of the College. Your practical work and written work will be assessed by your tutor throughout the course.

Careers and further studyLevel 2 course in a related subject within the Media, Art and Design faculty. There’s a gap in the marketing for creative careers in the Wakefield District, with huge variations and opportunities in the industry.

What you will studyThe course enables you to produce quality digital content. The qualification will develop your ability to organise yourself and your work and encourage you to reflect critically on the use of ICT.The qualifications you’ll complete include:• developing web products• creative multimedia• graphic art and design• coding

How you will learn and be assessedYou’ll learn through the use of a variety of software packages. Assessment is through submission of e-portfolios and paper-based assignments for each unit.

Careers and further studyYou can go on to study the Level 2 Diploma in ICT or other Level 2 programmes. Skills developed in digital applications provide a wide range of career options, as well as a route into further and higher education.

Caring for people, from young babies to older adults can be a very rewarding job. You need to be a kind and understanding person who has lots of patience. This course gives you the chance to learn about all life stages.

What you will studyModules studied can include:• understanding service provision• principles and values• protection and safeguarding• awareness of equality and inclusion

How you will learn and be assessedYou’ll have lessons in childcare, health and social care, maths and English as well as tutorial sessions. You’ll learn about caring for children, diet and nutrition, working safely and meeting the needs of older aged adults. You’ll also be timetabled for private study sessions, these are when you’ll complete any homework or assignments. You’ll be involved in a variety of course related activities including visiting speakers, tutor presentations, research and practical activities. You’ll be assessed through completing workbooks, writing essays, producing leaflets, answering questions or doing presentations.

Horticulture is the industry and science of plant cultivation including the process of preparing soil for the planting of seeds, tubers, or cuttings.

What you will studyModules studied can include:• safety of self and others in the workplace• transporting supplies of physical resources• maintaining structures and surfaces• planting and establishing plants• vegetative propagation of plants• propagation of plants from seeds• identifying the presence of, and controlling common

pests and diseases

How you will learn and be assessedYou’ll learn by building up skills, professional techniques and knowledge by working in a realistic horticulture environment that includes greenhouses, growing grounds, orchards and lawns. Class-based lessons will give you a full understanding of the theory of horticulture and expand your knowledge for assessments. During the course of the academic year, you’ll be involved in visits, locally and nationally. Theory assessment will be a combination of short-answer questions and observed practical assessments.

Music is the third largest exporting industry in the UK and our School of Popular Music has a rich mix of students and musical interests.If you want to study popular music in a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere, this course provides a real flavour of how work in the music industry evolves, from the initial idea to the final performance.

What you will studyYou’ll develop your music performance skills and knowledge of music technology software, practical recording techniques, and understanding of the music industry. You’ll explore different styles of music, work actively as part of a group, and be encouraged to give and take ideas in the creation of music productions.

How you will learn and be assessedThis is a practical performance course with some theory work throughout. You’ll develop your skills by completing assignments and projects based on the type of activities required in the workplace. You’ll be assessed through performances and practical and theoretical work.

Careers and further studyThis course can lead to a variety of roles in the music industry such as performer, session musician, composer, manager, promoter, songwriter, community arts worker, or teacher. After completing this course you can go on to study Level 3 qualifications in music performance or music technology with further progression to the HND Music programme.

Step Up – Years 9, 10 and 11

What is it?Step Up is our largest 14-16 provision and offers accredited two-year part-time courses for school-age learners in years 9-11. Typically a student would spend a full day or half a day each week in College working towards a Level 1 qualification in a vocational area – our most popular subjects being construction, motor vehicle andhair & beauty.

Who is eligible?Our Step Up provision is ideal for students who are eager to pursue a vocational post-16 pathway and it provides them with a recognised and accredited qualification. Like the ECT programme, it offers students a head start and a guaranteed progression route into post-16 study, subject to successful completion and compliance with agreed behaviour and attendance requirements.We welcome referrals and references from Heads of KS3 and KS4 for students looking to follow a vocational pathway in a group made up of school-age learners.

If you’re interested in a career in construction when you leave school, but aren’t sure whether you wish to follow the craft route or the building services route, this course is ideal. If you choose the building services pathway, you will gain an introduction to both plumbing and electrical installation. If you choose the construction craft option, you will study modules including bricklaying, carpentry and joinery.

Who is eligible?The Pre-ECT programme is for learners who may be disengaged and/or already identified by their school as potential ECT students in Year 11.It acts as a comprehensive transition programme for potential ECT students by helping them identify a suitable vocational course to study. It also seeks to ensure that students are ready for full-time education at Wakefield College in Year 11.

The ESOL Bridging Programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Who is eligible?This programme is for students who may join schools from overseas during Year 10 and/or 11.

What is it? The Young ESOL programme is designed to support schools to provide a tailored curriculum and progression pathway.

It is an intensive programme of 16 hours per week where students will learn all aspects of the English Language including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. An emphasis is placed on developing skills in English grammar, vocabulary building, conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing through detailed practice.

Learners will also have the chance to take mathematics, personal and social development, and ICT classes alongside their main programme.

Designed for students whose first language is not English, this course will give you an opportunity to improve all aspects of your English including speaking, listening, reading and writing. You’ll also have the chance to take mathematics, personal and social development, and ICT classes alongside English.

What you will studyThe course covers all aspects of the English Language and you’ll study a range of interesting and engaging topics such as holidays and travel, education, hobbies and free time. High expectationsOur policies on attendance and standards of work are there to ensure that students demonstrate a full commitment to their study and are ultimately successful. We will expect all of our students to meet our 95% attendance figure and to exceed their target grades, and we will enjoy being able to celebrate their success in achieving these high standards

Additional Learning Support (ALS)We strongly urge students to disclose any disability or other additional support need so that we can make any reasonable adjustments to support them with their studies whilst at College. Our team of staff try hard to identify the additional support any student may require to help them study and learn effectively. This could be extra support with English or Maths, communication support for deaf students, provision of enabling and assistive computer equipment, provision of scribes and/or readers, care/welfare support, and additional teaching and non-teaching curriculum support.We have a disability statement which outlines the access and support we are able to offer to learners. Copies are available from College receptions, the Learning Centres, and the Additional Support Office and can be produced in alternative formats by request, for example large print or Braille. Safeguarding children We have a safeguarding policy in place to ensure that all young people and children attending activities in the College do so in a safe and secure environment. In our 2014 Ofsted inspection, the Inspectors commented:“Managers and governors place a strong emphasis on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students. The College meets fully its statutory requirements for safeguarding students. All staff have undertaken relevant training with regular updating. Behaviour is good.
