The manufacturer of engine for commercial application still relies on the optimisation of the conventional engine exhaust manifold and turbocharging combination. This paper investigates on design optimisation of exhast manifold for pulse turbocharged medium speed 4-stroke diesel engine.

Abstract - “Vehicle’s response parameter such as Spindle forces, moments, axle accelerations, stress levels on front suspensions are measured & used to simulate test track results. A proving ground-to-Test Rig correlation study has been carried out and damaging track data extracted & used for simulation on Multi axial test rig. This helps in accelerating the full vehicle endurance testing. Fundamental technical information and analytical tools used in overall vehicle durability testing are studied. A Proving Ground (PG) load data acquisition done by running an instrumented Passenger vehicle on PG tracks. Test track data repeatability checked & further analyzed, edited for Drive file generation on Road test simulator. Test track wheel load damage simulation done on test simulator. Different feedback sensors data acquired on road & rig compared for damage correlation. Test endurance pattern decided for full vehicle road endurance testing in lab. This reduces product validation time.“

Title : Analysis of Cylinder bore deformation

Abstract - “The human tendency of achieving high performance engines have made a tough time for the designers. This project too deals with the application of finite elemental analysis for the prediction of the deformation of cylinder bore for 3 cylinder HSDI Diesel engine with very high specific power. The distortion of the cylinder liners of internal combustion engines has a significant effect on engine operation. It can affect the oil consumption, the blow-by, the wear behavior and, due to friction, the fuel consumption. In order to achieve future requirements regarding exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, the development of low distortion engine blocks will play a significant role. Cylinder bore deformation due to structural loading is predicted using finite elemental analysis package MSC NASTRAN/PATRAN for 3 cylinder inline high speed Diesel engine. The effect of various parameter like cylinder liner thickness cylinder head bolt diameter thread depth of bolt have been analyzed for their effect on amount of bore deformation. Fourier analysis has been carried out for the predicted deformation and resulted are studied for different parameter and nature of deformation. The feasibility for the actual measurement of cylinder bore deformation during operating condition studied. The predicted results compared with data available and fair agreement have been observed.“

Pawar Key Words : Reinforced Chassis Frame, Deflection Curve, Conjugate Beam Method Abstract - “In the era of immense competition, the vehicle manufacturers are under tremendous pressure to come out with vehicles with reduced cost and weight, and improved performance and durability at the same time, this has been a major challenge for manufacturers as they look for ways to optimize their vehicle designs. Heavy Commercial Vehicle sector has grown in tandem with the ever growing industrial infrastructure. The wide variety of applications for which these Heavy Commercial Vehicles are used, make their design more critical. Design of the chassis of a Heavy Commercial Vehicle, is therefore, one of the most crucial aspects of the entire vehicle development program. Previously, the approach towards designing a heavy commercial vehicle chassis was to make it as stiff as possible. But, this resulted in increase in weight and cost. The remedy was to make the chassis stiff in the region of higher stresses and deflection. This was done by using reinforcement or stiffeners. While designing a chassis frame for a heavy commercial vehicle, it is required to be ensured that it is capable of sustaining heavier and varied loads. In order to withstand these loads without failure, deflection becomes prime criterion for the design, along with stresses. Evaluation of frame for static and dynamic loads is of prime importance. This analysis can be performed by any structural analysis software. This project discusses a mathematical method to find out the deflection of chassis under static vertical bending loads for non-uniform cross-section i.e. reinforced cross-section. In particular, this method requires input of the dimensions of cross-section used and magnitude and point of application of loads acting and one can get the deflection of chassis at any location. By using this method, one can get fairly correct idea about the selection of cross-section for the chassis in comparatively less efforts and time than that of software code. This method can be effectively utilized for design of the chassis frame at initial stages of the design process.“

Abstract - The primary aim of this thesis is to analyze a basic vehicle (SUV) body using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The advantages of CFD are very evident owing to the vast savings in terms of time, money, man power etc. In development duration, all of these represent a significant advantage over the conventional wind tunnel methods. The aerodynamics loads, which are acting on a road vehicle, play a significant role concerning the dynamic behavior of the latter one as regards the stability, handling, crosswind sensitivity and the fuel consumption and wind noise. These are the main reasons for which the aerodynamics has succeeded to become one of the mos important preambles in vehicle designing. In present exercise semi real vehicle model of TRAX judo existing has been simulated by using FLUENT commercial CFD code. Two different turbulence models namely standard kepsilon and RNG k-epsilon were used.The steady three dimensional flow simulations are carried out using commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT. The presented results like velocity vector pressure contours, and stream lines in for vehicle model give insight to the fluid flow phenomena and vortex shedding. The results obtained from this paper give a valuable input for future passenger vehicle body design with minimum drag coefficient.

Abstract - “The braking process in an automobile involves the contact of metallic solids against each other, which sometimes generates undesirable Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). Brake noise causes discomfort to passengers and degrades their perception of the quality of the vehicle. Typically disturbing brake NVH issues are squeal, moan, groan and judder. Of all, the probability ob brake with squeal is highest occurring phenomena, the reason being wider frequency range starting from 800Hz to 17000 Hz. moreover, squeal is a tonal frequency sound which has sharp distinct peak in spectrum. The link to modal resonances is significant although squeal generation is due to friction dynamics. In short, the transformation is through brake structures like rotor, caliper, bracket and pads. With today’s vehicles so refined and other types of vehicle noise significantly reduced, brake noise and vibration are becoming more perceivable by owners, leading to high warranty costs. With extensive research on brake noise already been done, the focus in this project is on the product variability and its impact on modal parameters of disc brake structures. The methodology is to arrive at the tolerance limits for manufacturing process and allied parameters by testing the disc brake components. In short, the dynamic characterization of identified disc brake components has been done thereby testing them on the vehicle with few permutations. Test results of lab and vehicle tests were linked to understand the characterization of brake squeal along with the operational and conditions at which it occurs. And then arrive at a solution for the brake squeal by freezing the process parameters.”

The vehicle performance prediction tool analyzes the behavior of four wheeled vehicles in response to steering, braking, and acceleration inputs. It produces the same kind of outputs that might be measured with physical tests involving instrumented vehicle. The physical models of vehicle systems and subsystems are represented in the form of algebraic and differential equations that relate forces and motions of vehicle. The toll can evaluate the role of each vehicle property in the phenomenon of vehicle performance. The organization always has many ways to achieve the target but some will be always better for utilization of available sources. To have a better idea of all options lot of time will be consumed, this project work is aimed reduce the time taken to finalize the configuration of full vehicle out of all available options with available sources.“

Abstract - “With the advancement in technology consumers are more concerned about quietness of product which they use. The quietness can be achieved by targeting the noise source, path and receiver. The solution for reduction of noise level can be achieved in many ways, but it should be an efficient one to satisfy the market. For the past two decades an efficient method for noise control was with the help of passive noise control techniques such as acoustic material treatment in cabins and enclosures, increased surface damping, etc., these technique is cost effective and efficient at higher frequencies, but poor at low frequencies. Hence there is a need for active noise control in such systems. The project discusses implementation of active noise control for fan in an uninterrupted power supply unit. To implement active noise control with the help of adaptive algorithms, identification of critical frequencies were carried out by measuring noise near fan. Based on the target frequencies suitable controller was designed and incorporating the sensors and actuators. The developed unit was then validated with experiments. The study can be extended to multiple sources which will be relevant for applications such as automobile, aerospace, etc.“

Abstract - “This project is an approach towards the improvement of ride and handling of light commercial passenger range of vehicles. This approach involves subjective evaluation of the vehicle behavior and also linearizing a full vehicle multi-body dynamics model. In subjective evaluation driver judges the vehicle behavior. Vehicle dynamic characteristics including ride and handling have a major impact on this evaluation. Subjective evaluation and customer satisfaction research shows which dynamic characteristics need to be improved. This project work intends to show the influence of some suspension properties on the global dynamic behavior of the vehicle having as a target an efficient suspension design. In terms of suspension properties showed in this work are suspension kinematics and compliances properties of front and rear suspension by using a multi-body dynamics model. In this study, a full vehicle model established with ADAMS is applied to simulate the vehicle. This work also shows numerical simulation results and also its correlation with subjective and objective analysis by using multi body system approach. In terms of global dynamic behavior this work point out some parameters, which effects the vehicle ride & handling properties. Those are : Ride frequencies, damping ratio, Anti roll bar contribution, Ackermann error, Anti dive & Anti Squat analysis, Roll steer & bump steer along with full vehicle simulation in ADAMS.“

Abstract - “Abstract - This is project is about design and analysis of rigid axle suspension system. All suspension systems have a common goal, which is to improve the ride in terms of comfort, handling, and safety. This is accomplished by infl uencing the mo ons affl icted by road irregulari es to the wheels and axles while minimizing their aff ect on the vehicle body and frame. A successful design would therefore incorporate (1) a high Sprung–To-Unsprung- Mass-Ra o, (2) a Mass-Spring-Damper System between the vehicle body and the wheels, and (3) an an -roll bar. The rigid axle suspension system divided into diff erent modules which includes, front leaf spring, rear leaf spring, dampers, an roll bar. These modules were designed simultaneously for strength as well as vehicle dynamic aspect, so it is not diffi cult to interfacing between diff erent systems. Performances of designed modules were checked by using ADAMS so ware.”

Abstract - The project follows the specific test procedure issued by PCRA (Petroleum Conservation Research Association). Wherein 5 acres are selected for each additive and running in 1500 kms is done on commercial gasoline followed by constant speed fuel consumption test at 40/60/80 kmph. And three MIDC test. Total six reading were taken at each speed mode. All the results are tabulated then the vehicles are again sent in for running 1500 kms filled with petrol inducted with additives followed by test mentioned above. The difference in fuel efficiency is declared as efficency of the additive.

Abstract - “To cater the market requirements & to enlarge the range of HCVS the development of new product 8x4 Truck was planned. Development of the 8x4 Truck was having the main task of the design of the steering mechanism. This thesis demonstrates the design & development of dual axle Steering system for the 8x4 truck. Low speed maneuvering was evaluated comparing the steering geometry with Ackerman Geometry. A bicycle model was developed for constant radius simulations at various track radii, vehicle speeds and steering ratios for steady state handling performance predictions. Hydraulic power system was designed to suit for the dual axle loads, and the steering gear box requirements. To comply with the regulations, predictions for specifications of vane pump, Power cylinder & steering gear box was analyzed. Kinematic analysis of the proposed steering mechanism was performed to investigate the steering geometry of the vehicle. The steering system for dual axle was optimized to satisfy the Ackerman geometry with DOE approach using MATLAB, CATIA-DMU, ADAMS/Insight tools.”

The conventional SI engine has fixed timing and synchronization between the camshaft and crankshaft and hence a compromise results between engine efficiency, performance and its maximum power. The gas flow phenomena in the intake port of a spark ignition engine with port fuel injection play a significant role in the mixture preparation process, especially at part load. The backflow of the hot burned gas from the cylinder into the intake port when the intake valve is opened influences fresh gas mixture temperatures. The backflow of in-cylinder mixture with its residual component during the compression stroke prior to inlet valve closing fills part of the inlet port with exhaust gas and dilutes the fresh incoming charge. Hence in SI automotive engines, valve events exert a major influence on charge composition under conditions like Idle and Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position. In the interest of promoting maximum idle quality, minimization of valve overlap with optimized valve timing is desirable. Maximizing engine performance via valve events without going for continuously variable valve train is the main focus of the project. To achieve the same first a one dimensional model to represent the actual engine performance is made using AVL BOOST software. The model is further Tuned/modified to imitate the performance of actual CNG fuelled four stroke SI Engine and validated with experimental results. The valve timing is then optimized by trying various feasible valve timing without much compromise in important Engine parameter like Power, Torque etc. The new valve timing for simulation is obtained by either increasing or decreasing the inlet and exhaust valve taking the standard valve timing as Reference. The engine’s combustion stability during idle speed is predicting by taking into consideration the amount of Burnt Gas Fractions under various valve timing that are used above. Finally the predicted best valve timing is proposed to improve engine performance at low speed.”

Abstract - The purpose of this study is with the increasing stringent emissions from the vehicle, playing a destroying role in human health and global ecology, being a part of the society everyone has the responsibility to take measures to reduce and to contribute for lower emission. And the norms from the government going from tighter to tightest, vehicle has to be optimized for lower emission. One of the important factors which play a vital role in forming engine emissions like CO, HC, NOx, Particulate, smoke, aldehydes is combustion chamber. Thus the clear understanding of the combustion process can help in improving emissions. An overview is provided to the other features of the combustion system namely, different types of nozzle and its behavior. The importance of the piston bowl, its shape, location and effects of piston bowl on air motion, different types of nozzles orifice and its behavior on the spray with respect to emission has been studied in this development. After conducting the feasibility study in all respects for modification of a cylinder head with new injector location and piston bowl location. It is designed in CATIA for clearing the physical constraints. To reduce development time and cost, a system approach to engine optimization is possible through an effective Design of Experiments (DoE) Also different test trails have been conducted for the existing and modified injector, piston bowl location. And the test results showing improvements are discussed. From the studies it is concluded that modified offset of injector and piston location gives better performance.

Failures in gearboxes may be a consequence of the own gear unit or the entire power-system. The variables in the entire power-system, such as vibration, misalignment, reactions and temperature, in many times, are considered the main root causes for the gear failures. The bending and surface strength of the gear tooth are considered to be one of the main contributors for the failure of the gear in a gear set. Thus, analysis of stresses has become popular as an area of research on gears to minimize or to reduce the failures of gears. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the durability behaviour of helical gears in manual automotive gearboxes. This thesis investigates the characteristics of an involute helical gear system mainly focused on bending and contact safety factor and their stresses using Classical Method and RomaxDesigner. To estimate the bending and contact safety factor of the gears, the gear pair is modelled and assembled to gearbox assembly and analysis is done using RomaxDesigner. This thesis considers the study of contact stresses induced between two gears. To determine the contact stresses between two mating gears the analysis is carried out using RomaxDesigner and Finite Element Analysis software ABAQUS. The results obtained from RomaxDesigner are compared with ABAQUS results. The motivation was to develop a robust design for this mating gear pair aiming to increase its reliability with low cost, without increasing weight. The gears were modified in design parameters, such as material type, shot peening, increase of gear width and micro-geometry.“

Abstract - “A detailed knowledge of the in-cylinder flow is a fundamental requirement when optimizing the fuel/air mixing and combustion process in an internal combustion engine. The in-cylinder flow structure occurring during the intake stroke is primarily determined by the setup and geometry of the intake ports and the intake valves. There are basically two types of in-cylinder flows; organised and disorganised. For the case of disorganised flow, the port simply fills the cylinder with air without a flow structure. Organised flows like swirl and tumble are generated by the geometry of the inlet ports. The effect of these organised flows on the engine performance varies from good to bad depending on the load and speed requirements. So for a better design of inlet port, we need to quantify these flows. This project deals with the “The Design and Development of Swirl Test Rig”. The swirl test rig which is being developed is of the paddle wheel type. The test rig is designed in such a way that both the inlet and exhaust ports can be evaluated, which will help the research and development team to improve upon the existing port design by conducting trials in-house. The different methods used to get the swirl ratio are discussed in detail. This project also involves the design of various components of swirl test rig. The testing of all three types of engine cylinder heads manufactured in the company is performed. The results of these tests are then compared with already established results and any deviations are discussed.”

They are continuously trying to increase the comfort and value of their vehicle interiors by improving interior sound quality while adding minimal cost and weight in the form of sound control materials. There are two basic ways of sound propagation; by air (air-borne sound) and by vibration of the car body (bulk sound). The present project concerns mainly with reducing the “air-borne sound” by acoustic absorption. A special care must be taken on the study, evaluation, and also validation of sound package configurations in order to have the best choice in terms of cost and efficiency. Many methods and test procedures are employed to access and measure the sound package efficiency. To properly evaluate the acoustic performance of a sound package component, the sound transmission loss and absorption should be taken into consideration at the same time. A study has been done to measure sound transmission in a vehicle using B & K Speaker. Use of carpet-type materials in passenger cars is increasing. A large variety is seen in floor coverings, luggage areas, sidewall trim and rear shelves. These materials along with trim, head linings and seats, provide sound absorption in the car. This report discusses the results of an experimental study on sound absorption of floor acoustic package of three benchmarking vehicles. The acoustical evaluation was done using measurements of material properties along with sound pressure level from road testing of a fully-assembled vehicle. This project has attempted to establish and organize a data base for sound absorption performance of carpet – type materials, such that it will be readily be useable by design engineers. This will allow selection of the carpet with superior sound absorption when all other things are equal between two carpets.“

Abstract - “The driver judges his vehicle based on subjective aspects. Vehicle dynamics characteristics including ride and handling have a major impact on this evaluation. For this reason, vehicle manufactures have grown investments in order to improve vehicle dynamics behavior. The objective of this project is to design the suspension system that provides the improvement in the ride and handling performance without compromising on any other vehicle performance. To enter into upper class segment, our organization planning to upgrade our existing vehicle which having a torsion spring suspension for front and a solid rear axle with leaf springs for rear. By replacing the original mechanism with a double wishbone with coil spring for front and four-link mechanism with panhard bar and coil springs for rear, the ride comfort and handling characteristics of the car were noticeably improved. To verify the analytical results, simulation in Adams carried out. Results of these tests demonstrated remarkable improvement of the dynamics behavior of the vehicle”

Project Guides : Dr.Mathew Abraham and Mr.S.P.Subhedar.Key Words : CNG DI Injector and CFD Analysis.Abstract - Direct injection (DI) of natural gas (NG) has emerged as a high-potential strategy for improving SI engine performance. Premixed natural gas engines have lower volumetric efficiencies due to the displacement of CNG by air. The performance of natural gas engines can be increased by employing a direct injection technique. In this project, an effort is being made to develop a thermodynamic engine model using AVL Boost software and perform simulations under various operating modes. AVL Boost is engine simulation software where an engine has to modeled first and simulation can be performed to get the results. Modeling an engine in AVL Boost is a challenging task as it needs many inputs. Existing CNG venture mixer injection was modeled in AVL BOOST and validated with the test bed results. After validating the existing engine model, the same model is converted to CNG Direct Injection model with small changes in the combustion model. After simulations, it was found that CNG Direct injection has the benefits of improvement in volumetric efficiency, power, torque and bsfc. CNG DI injector is not commercially available because of some limitations like, it has to withstand high combustion environment (unlike normal gaseous injectors), leakage problems and durability due to insufficient lubrication effect. In order to overcome these problems, existing VENTURI MIXER TYPE injector is modified to suit the CNG Direct Injector environment. Mixture formation with gaseous fuels due to its low mass density is more critical than in gasoline engines, because even with high injection velocities still produce very low fuel penetration. For this reason mixture homogenization in the cylinder depends much more on charge motion. This effect is more important for gaseous fuels than liquid fuels. In an internal combustion engine, charge motion and mixture processes are extremely spatial and time dependent and experimentally scarcely detectable. For this reason, the 3D-CFD-simulation is one of the most appropriate approaches in order to investigate these complex phenomena under many different engine operating conditions and then to find solutions for enhancing the engine performance. The pre- processing of CFD 3D modelling was made in ANSA & TGRID and solving & post processing were done in FLUENT 6.3.

Project Details Title : Defrost Analysis of Windshield Project Guides : Dr.A.Felix Regin, Mr.Gaurav Nigam (Maruti suzuki India Limited) Key Words : Defrosting, Windshield, CFD Abstract - “Simulation of passenger compartment climate condition is becoming increasingly important as a complement to wind tunnel and field testing to help achieve improved windshield defrosting performance while reducing vehicle development time and cost. Car manufacturers have invested considerable resources to satisfy the defrosting safety requirements of their customers.The windshield defroster plays an important role in clearing the ice layer formed over the windshield of a vehicle by blowing out hot air. Windshield defrosting simulation involves not only the geometrical complexity but also interaction between airflow and heat transfer. Understanding these interactions and melting of ice layer over the windshield is a difficult task in practical experiments. In the present study, CFD is employed to numerically simulate windshield defrosting performance. Although CFD simulation is popular and convenient, the efficiency and accuracy of the simulation depends upon the parameters such as the choice of computational grid system, boundary conditions, simplified geometry taken, and turbulence model and so on. The general-purpose CFD package Star-CCM+ is used to perform the numerical simulation. Experimental investigation is performed for the purpose of validating the numerical results. Numerical experiments are performed in two steps. Initially the steady state flow analysis at different air flow rate for the defroster duct is performed. Then the defrosting analysis can be performed by doing steady flow analysis in the defrost duct with the simplified cabin and then coupling the thermal model with the flow model. The steady velocity field obtained in the first step of the analysis is used to solve for the time-dependent temperature field. The effect of various parameters on the defrosting of windshield has been discussed and found that the complete meting time increases with increase in airflow rate and temperature. Also the melting rate is higher in initial stage and it gradually reduces with respect to time. Different case study has been done to finalize the optimum blower flow rate and heater air outlet temperature requirement.”

Abstract - In the recent past, interior noise quality has developed into a decisive aspect for the evaluation of overall vehicle quality. The paper discusses the effect of structural modes of vibration caused in a passenger car during its operational conditions and its effect of noise inside the cabin. In order to characterize the body modes under road operation, OMA is used and the Interior noise quality of car cabin is judged by the SQ tools. Based on the jury evaluation, the problem is identified and problem area is identified with operational modal analysis techniques to take the countermeasure and verification of the study is done. The relation of body modes is established to overall cabin noise performance and a CAE modal is also validated to identify the further scope of improvement and critical areas are improved based on the feedback. This study is helpful in developing the new vehicle modal faster and also to analyze and to take countermeasure at the early stage of development saving cost and time.

Among the factors performance, durability, safety and NVH were prime importance, for which customers also demand for all the factors at equal levels. For an automobile the sources of noise are multiple such as engine, exhaust, tire/road, intake, transmission, suspension, etc,. Of these the major contributor is engine. To devise effective measures for reducing an engine noise, the contributions due to combustion mechanism, movement of mechanical parts, load and other components are to be identified. Whilst easy to conceptualize its generation, ‘combustion noise’ is never heard or measured directly in isolation from other power train (or vehicle) noise components Following the philosophy of a cascaded approach to NVH development, there is a strong requirement to quantify the level of combustion noise generated by a power train across its operating regime. Many approaches and measuring devices have been developed to quantify combustion noise. Sound intensity mapping is carried out to know exactly the percentage contribution of each components. Cylinder pressure and noise radiated by engine will be measure in an hemi anechoic room and regression analysis is carried out. This method considers engine noise as a criterion variable along with two explanatory variables which are cylinder pressure level and engine torque.”

Abstract - The Automotive Industry is undergoing an enormous change with latest models being released to market everyday. The IC engine designers are in the midst of a period of intense research and development activity to give the best power and mileage with the affordable cost to their customers and at the same time satisfying the stringent emission norms. These constraints are forcing the researchers for rapid changes in design practices and market strategies. The Engine Research & Development centers around the world work tirelessly to extract more power from each drop of the fuel used so that they can increase the fuel efficiency and also achieving the above said tasks. The important parts of the DI diesel combustion system are Air Intake system, Fuel Injection system and Exhaust system. The importance and design of the Injector Nozzle has been discussed in this thesis. An overview is provided to other features of the combustion system. The factors that play an important role in the performance of Atomization is identified which includes Injection Pressure, Coefficient of Discharge, Spray Penetration, Hole Diameter etc., After extensive literature survey, a new proposal has been given for the hole diameter having better spray penetration and coefficient of discharge. The proposed nozzle with reduced hole diameter gives better discharge coefficient and improved fuel consumption and power.

Advanced technologies like Multi Point Fuel Injection, Electronic Throttle Control, Closed loop lambda control system, EGR, Wastegate Turbo Charger with Intercooler and Stoichiometric Combustion etc are incorporated in the engine to achieve the performance targets. In the initial stage, simulation software AVL boost v5.1 is used to predict the performance of the engine. Parameters such as the power, torque, BSFC, peak firing pressure, exhaust temperature are determined. Spark timing at different speed ranges is also determined and this value is used as a reference during engine testing. The second stage is testing of the engine in the engine test bed. Results of engine testing and simulation are compared. Based on the test results the performance targets are finalized. In the final stage based on the comparisons and results, the parameters such as the spark timing, diameter of the EGR pipe, turbocharger matching, throttle diameter are finalized to achieve the upgraded performance targets. Once satisfactory results are achieved, the engine is tested on the test bed for performance and emission checks. At a later stage the results of simulation and testing are compared and the parameters are optimized to achieve better results. This simulation model will later be used as a basis for developing higher rating engines for achieving future emission norms.

This torsional moment test simulates the moemnts those are experienced by wheel rim carrying weight of the vehicle passengers and cargo. This test rig mainly consist of two parts loading arm that will provide required moment to the testing wheel rim and a force applying mechanism which will provide necessary torsional moment to the wheel of the rim. Brake system was designed and developed and component level as well as vehicle level .Validation has been done for the non abestos braking system .From experimental setup we found that the brake performance characteristic of non abestos braking system with required brake system geometry was better in all aspect as compared to abestos.

Panel contribution methodolgy is used for assesing rocker cover contribution at over all noise on engine. Abstract - “The radiators of ground vehicle will experience a lot of complicated loads. It is very difficult to predict the exact source and amount of load. So, design of brackets for radiators is a big challenge. This challenge becomes much bigger when cost and weight reduction factors added to it. The testing and CAE results show failure in the initial design of the bracket. The failure was observed in both the brackets. The design flexibility available to take counter measure was very less since all other designs were frozen near mass production. In the process of overcoming the failure, CAE is extensively used. With the help of CAE, the effect of each counter measure towards increasing the strength of bracket is studied. Taking into considerations of all design constrants and manufacturing factors, best counter measure was chosen. The same is analyzed and tested. CAE results were compared with the testing results and the correlation was well within the range of acceptance. From this study, a bench mark has been set for overcoming the similar problems. The usage of CAE has reduced the number of prototypes in finding the solution for the problem.”

Abstract - “The project is part of challenging activity of Development of 3 cylinder 1.5 litre HSDI Diesel Engine. The demands of very high specific power output & meeting stringent the emission norms (Euro-4 & Euro-5) are the main objectives to be achieved. Deeper studies on the valve proportions & port layout have suggested the need to go for the 4 valve layout with tandem port configuration. Also to meet the norms with no compromise in the performance justified the need to go for two independent intake ports (Helical & Directed). To achieve high flow coefficient values Siamese type of Exhaust port is to be developed. The main task is to define a structured development process that enables a port design optimized for the combustion system requirements for the given boundary and packaging conditions The target swirl value of 2.0 (combined) along with the mean flow coefficient 0.35(combined) was set for the intake ports. The target mean flow coefficient of 0.425 was set for the exhaust ports. The CAD models of the ports are to be made in the PRO-Engineer platform. At the end project aims in validating the design. Flow box is made as per the finalized port and is tested on the Swirl Rig for its performances and is validated against design targets.“

Abstract - “ABSTRACT Usage of motor vehicle has become extensive today along with increase in awareness of safety, ride and comfort. Safety and ride was considered in different stages of development for the past two decades, whereas comfort determined by noise and vibration is observed to be the factor of prime importance. Vehicle noise is governed by different sources such as engine, transmission, intake, exhaust, tyre, suspension, etc. Among these sources of noise, tyre is a major contributor for exterior noise and at higher speeds for interior noise. Hence to understand the NVH mechanism of tire/road noise better, it is essential to know the complete sound and vibration around a tire. This current study is going to assess the noise generated by tyre based on real time interior noise measurement of a vehicle in road and in a bench test carried out in an controlled environment. On comparing these two, conclusion has to be arrived. For controlled environment noise measurement, first a test rig is designed to replace vehicle and results from the measurements and calculations obtained are presented. Results from modal analysis of a tire excited by shaker are compared with the operational noise and vibration (ODS) measurements acquired in a controlled environment. Additionally operational parameters variations such as running speed and inflation pressure were carried out. Acoustic holography measurement was carried out to identify the noise radiation pattern from tyre. For in vehicle noise measurement, microphones were placed at various locations such as driver’s ear level (DEL) and Rear Ear Level (REL) and measurement was carried out in real time on road.”

Abstract - “The effective functioning of valve train system in automotive engine is of prime importance and the design of cam profile is a key to the valve train. The adequate duration of valve opening suitable velocity and acceleration valve closing can be assured by cam profile. The design of valve train directly influences th engine performance, exhaust emission, reliability, vibration and noise. The finger follower like cam valve system with a hydraulic lash adjuster is simulated in multi body elastic valve train, analysis tool call GT V train,kinematic simulation are carried out using AVL TIMING EXCITE DRIVE (TYCOON). Using GT V Train as comaparision mode for high speed for three cylinder deisel engine, analysis of polynomial and harmonic cam profile can be carried out.”

To better Understand the state of the art in bumper design for today’s condition becomes a higher priority. The existing bumper design is not having any solution for on road problems. Hence the new design or refinement in the existing is needed Selection of material, the manufacturing process, the cost and weight are the primary constraints which involved in new design. Material point of view a high strength to weight ratio is needed and the model should withstand the on road conditions and it should satisfy the norms which lead a safety system on low speed impact. Hence to know the performance of the proposal we need to find the vibration level, fatigue life and crash simulation for the damage of the vehicle. And finally by predicting the results Experimental and simulation basis the needs and improvement in overall design has been performed to get an optimum solution for the problems mentioned. In added with the cost, time and weight of the new design should come down in view of the solution to overall necessity.“

GUIDE) Key Words : Cabin noise, Interior noise, Booming noise Abstract - “The noise analysis of the passenger car can be divided into engine induced noise analysis and road induced noise analysis transmitted by tire and chassis system. Also the analysis can be classified into structure borne noise and air borne noise based on the transfer path and frequency range. Structure borne noise is produced by vibration of vehicle panel which is induced by engine excitation or road input. Air borne noise is induced by transmission of noise from engine room or intake system and exhaust muffler system and also depends on the exterior style. The frequency range of air borne noise is usually high frequency and can be controlled by proper addition of absorbing material and insulation material. For the case of structure borne noise, the frequency range is below 200 Hz and it is more effective to reduce the structure borne noise by modification of the body structure. The BIW maintains most of the vehicle stiffness and also affects interior noise. So the global modes are important for the low frequency vibration and local modes are main parameters for the interior noise. The BIW was modeled detailed to represent both global mode and local modes. The detailed finite element model of the B.I.W was constructed by using the linear thin shell elements that were represented each body panels. These panels were connected by rigid elements to simulate the spot welds. The correlation was performed to validate modal properties. The trimmed body was modeled by adding the windshield and trim parts to the B.I.W. by considering the effect of mass and stiffness. Cabin cavity analysis and B.I.W modal analysis was performed. Resonating frequency causing interior noise was spotted and then suitable countermeasure was taken in order improve cabin noise”

Abstract - In this thesis an attempt has been made to improve emission of single cylinder D.I diesel engine was modelled and simulated using G.T power .A baseline study was done and compared with available with available data parametric study was carried out by varying the injection pressure .It is found that a the injection pressure increased the rated power and torque increased with considered improved in SFC due to high combustion efficiency. the combustion pressure and temperature increased proportionally.
