    The Lessons

The First Reading 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16 Reader: A reading from the book of Samuel

W hen the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you." But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever. Reader: The word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God

The Magnificat sung by choir chant by J. Randall

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: *the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him *in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, *he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,* and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, *and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, *to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Gospel Stand Luke 1:26-38 Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

I n the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Rev. Michael T. McCain

    Silence

    The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

  • 6

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People Purify our conscience, O Lord, so that we may offer our prayers and petitions with a wholesome heart, responding, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

O Emmanuel, visit those who do not know of your coming, and who have not been told of your presence, open their minds to your merciful love and be born in their hearts; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Key of David, unlock our complacency, that we may tend to the fearful and lowly, be in solidarity with the poor and downtrodden, fill the hungry with good things, and serve your beloved with mercy and love; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Root of Jesse, be with scientists and medical teams as they discover life enhancing treatments, and grant them the wisdom to use their findings for the good of all people; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Desire of Nations, bring peace to our families, churches, schools, and nations, that the whole world may know of your eternal harmony; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Wisdom, give your gift of insight to all who are responsible for the governance of our Church, corporations, national governments, social agencies, schools, armed forces, and medical facilities, that through their faith and dedication, all the peoples of the world may prosper; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Dayspring from on High, to the sick bring healing, to the dying relief, and to the dead your everlasting arms of mercy; for this we pray. Come, Lord Jesus.

With the ever-blessed Virgin Mary, blessed Elizabeth, blessed John the Baptist, blessed Zechariah, blessed Anna, and all the saints, let us continue our prayers.

Presider: Hasten, O Father, the coming of thy kingdom; and grant that we thy servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold thy Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Confession of Sin Stand or Kneel

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

    Silence

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Please stand. Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. The ministers and people greet one another in the peace of God. Announcements Thank you for your contributions to support the work of Saint Mark’s. One way to give immediately during this offertory time is through Venmo: @lovesaintmarks. Prayer for Stewardship written by Saint Ignatius of Loyola Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. All I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me. Amen. Gracious and loving God, Giver of all, accept these pledges as tokens of the life, labor, and love of this congregation, offered to the glory of God and for the work of God's church in the world. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon those who make these offerings today. Amen. Birthday Prayer Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up when they fall; and in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Anniversary Prayer O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on those, who come to renew the promises they have made to each other. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Offertory Hymn 265 The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came

    The Holy Communion

The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer B

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Presider: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

  • 9

    The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in

creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and

above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate

from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from

evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out

of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to

you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for

you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for

the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

    Celebrant and People

    We remember his death,

    We proclaim his resurrection,

    We await his coming in glory;

    The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from

your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament

of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we

may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all

things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Mark

and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus

Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty

Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Presider: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the Glory, forever and ever. Amen

  • 10

The Breaking of the Bread Silence is kept Presider: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Presider: The Gifts of God for the People of God. And may add: Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

    Celebrant: Let us pray.

All : Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most

precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries

that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now,

Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses

of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Sending of the Lay Eucharistic Ministers

Deacon: I send you forth in the name of God and this congregation bearing these Holy gifts to

(name), that they may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood.

People: We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup.

    The Blessing

Celebrant: May the Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior Christ came among us in great

humility, sanctify you with the light of God’s blessing and set you free from all sin. Amen.

May Christ whose Second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful

in hope, and constant in love. Amen.

May you, who rejoice in the First Advent of our Redeemer, at Christ’s Second Advent be rewarded with

    unending life. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain

    with you forever. Amen.

    The Dismissal

Deacon: Let us go forth in the name of Christ.

    People: Thanks be to God.

Love Saint Mark's Yard Signs Help us get the word out about Saint Mark's. A while back, we distributed yard signs inviting people to join us for Church. Since "going to church" looks different this year, we have created stickers to update the signs asking people to "Join us This Week!" You may pick up your stickers after the 8 am service or at the Church office during normal business hours and then put it over the top of the sign where it says, "Join us this week." Yard signs with stickers are also available if you don't have one. Display it in your yard for everyone to see--your yard sign just might the "sign" that someone needs to see right now.

A Note from St. Francis House Our clothing room is open, and we are taking limited donations of clothing, household goods and toiletries. Due to a reduced number of volunteers, we request those who want to donate contact Victor Carbajal, [email protected], or call St. Francis House, 501-664-5036 to schedule a drop-off time. All clothing must be clean and in good repair. All donations should be on hangers or in boxes. We are not able to accept bags of donations.

Adult Forum Sunday’s 9:15 on Zoom Sunday Formation class will be based on Adam Hamiltion’s book “Incarnation: Discovering the Significance of Christmas.” You are invited to read the book along with us but it is not required. Each class will start with a short video on the theme and then group discussion. The topics for each week are: 12/20 - Advent 4: The Light of the World

Musical Class on Thursday Evenings The music discussions on Thursday nights have been illuminating, inspiring and meaningful. We have explored a wide range of works from Jazz to Classical, each time finding meaning in the music that goes beyond mere historical and biographical knowledge. Please contact Tim Allen [email protected] for links to all the music which we listen to before the class and to get the Zoom link for the meeting.

Children's Sunday School @9:30 Ages 3-5th grade Until we are able to meet in person, we will meet over Zoom. I know Zoom isn't the same as in person, but as a parent, I promise we will make the time they spend with us worth it! They will need a Worship Tool Box to use each week. If your child wants to participate, Luke will get one to you-he will leave one in the office or deliver it to you. From 9:30-9:45 we will share music, games, and the weekly story. All will come back together at 10:00 for a closing video and prayer. We hope these 30 minutes will help your child grow in God's love each week! Contact Luke with questions [email protected].

Youth Sunday School: Think. Believe. Do. We will begin Sunday school via Zoom this Sunday at 9:15am. Youth in 6th-12th grade are invited to join us to think about faith, grow in our beliefs and do the work of God in the world. Zoom info: Meeting ID: 833 5617 9439 Password: tbd2020

EYC Schedule Change Since more people will be traveling over the next month, COVID numbers are rising in Arkansas, and cold weather is coming, we have decided to move to an every other week schedule for our groups. Sr High will meet one week from 6-7, and Jr High will meet the next from 6-7. This gives us a 14 day window between groups meetings, allows us to continue to use the outdoor space as much as possible, and keeps everyone safe. For the month of December, the schedule is as follows:

December 23rd: Jr High meets from 6-7pm December 30th: NO MEETING
