Fourways High School

It is difficult to believe we have only been at school for a couple of weeks. Teachers are already working hard to ensure our students are achieving their goals.

I am concerned about the number of students who are late in the mornings and the amount of absenteeism. Students are missing valuable teaching time and putting themselves under unnecessary pressure. Please try where possible to make doctors’ appointments for the afternoons.

Pupils who are involved in the extra-curricular programme must learn to manage their time. Those who are not involved in the afternoon must report to the media centre so that they can work.

A huge thank you to each and every parent for everything you do for our children. Without your support, we would not be able to do our jobs.

Just to let you know a structural engineer will be checking our facility, in light of recent events.

Thank you for your continued support.

G. de Bruyn

SWIMMING CAMP

Ready. Set. Go. A phrase our swimmers have become accustomed to during swimming practice and our inaugural swimming camp was nothing different. The early morning faces on Thursday 7th February 2019 quickly turned to excited ones as the camp had FINALLY reached us. We left Fourways with a 50 strong group of swimmers ready to brave the Durban waters (with an ocean splash the only thing on everyone’s mind). Our arrival in Durban was met with the fastest organisation I have ever seen in the swimmers. Within 10minutes of arriving and being allocated rooms, they ALL had their costumes on and were on their way to the beach. And what a great session/sun downer that turned out to be. It is always in these times that the best friendships and team bonds are created. There was no junior vs senior. It was one fantastic afternoon on the beach front with a few beach games too which ended with a Spur outing at Gateway and the most INTENSE bowling competition ever. It all came down to the last frame and the swimmers had the whole mall in awe with their competitive yet excited spirit. Friday met us with sunny skies and a daunting pool session for the swimmers, to which every swimmer gave their heart (a certain Paige Brown giving her lungs too). And then onwards to a gala held at St Henry’s Marist College. A different kind of gala for us, but still great exposure for our swimmers. The afternoon, even the coaches wanted to get involved, was a great session of cricket, rugby and ocean polo. With even the coaches sharing in the fun and beach photos. Saturday was an early morning with a 07h30 training session before hitting the park of Ushaka. This was the highlight for most and they enjoyed every minute of the quick aquarium talk and the rest of the day in the sun on the slides showing that Fourways can be competitive in the pool, yet have a blast when allowed some freedom. Early to bed however as the next day was the big swim of Midmar. We had joined up with a foundation called “Choc” and we had 47 swimmers take part in this great children’s initiative. We were by far the largest group that “Choc” had had and a huge thank you to Ms Williams for getting the ball rolling in this with her “Choc” costumes and charity work. The swim was really great with Dieter Buissinne finishing in a time of 20’39’’ which gave him 29th overall out of 1400 swimmers in his event and Tarryn Campbell swimming a time of 25’48’’. All our swimmers finished with at least 30 swimming faster times some by 3 minutes than the previous year. It was a BRILLIANT swimming camp and I as the coach was definitely sad to see it end.

GENERAL

SKOOBS first ever High School Book Quiz kicks off to an enthusiastic start

On the evening of 15 February 2019 a very enthusiastic quiz team from Fourways High participated in the first ever High School Book Quiz hosted by SCOOBS Theatre Books, Montecasino.

The Fourways High quiz team consisted of the following learners: Taylor Wright (Gr 10), Aeryn Shannahan (Gr 10), Tlotlano Ndamase (Gr 10) and Nicolas McNiven (Gr 10). The competition was high with 3 other schools participating in Round 1. Heronbridge took first place, narrowly followed by Reddam House Helderfontein. Steyn City School placed third and Fourways High took fourth place.

Fourways High was complimented on their amazing team spirit and enthusiasm. Actress and TV presenter, Natasha Sutherland, showed off her comedic talents as Quizmaster and had both spectators and contestants in stitches!

The evening proved to be a lot of fun and our quiz team gained valuable experience and book knowledge. Round 2 will take place on the evening of 15 March. Holding thumbs for the Fourways High quiz team in Round 2. (Editorial per Heike Kirstein, Media Centre)

SPORTS

Massive congratulations to Triathlete Nadya Stolarczyk who has won the gold medal at the Troutbeck ATU Triathlon African Cup held in Zimbabwe.

We would like to sincerely thank Mr. Leigh Blomkamp (Owner) and Miss Tannah-Leigh Blomkamp of TENNIS COURT MAINTENANCE S.A. for generously sponsoring kit bags to facilitate our 2nd Team Netball Players and their Coach Ms. A Coetzee.

Grade 10 pupil Dieter Buissinne has been selected by Central Gauteng Aquatics (CGA) to compete at the 2019 Swimming South Africa National Open Water Championships, taking place at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay on 2 and 3 March. This is an invite-only competition and Dieter will be competing in the 3km events, along with 48 other swimmers from the province against athletes from across South Africa. This will be the second year in a row Dieter is taking part in the national competition. Dieter practices five times a week at Haupt Swimming Club with coach Steve Haupt. During these practices, Dieter focuses on a number of swimming skills such as speed (for shorter, fast paced races) or stamina (for longer swims which require stamina) depending on what competitions are coming up. Dieter advised that he prefers long-distance swimming. Last year Dieter swam the Midmar Mile in 00:24:52 and this year he did the same distance in 00:20:39. To qualify, Dieter had to cover 3km in 48 minutes or less, a feat he achieved at a competition held at Sun City in October 2018. Dieter will receive his colours for nationals on the 27th of February 2019. Besides swimming, Dieter also enjoys being part of sound and lighting at school and karate.
