Analysis

Conventional?• Both black and white and colour editing to capture different emotions.• Lip-syncing.• Artist appearance.• Video relates to lyrics.• Range of locations used.• Editing matches the pace of the song.• Variety of cinematography.• Performance.

Meaning of the song;• I think the song implicitly is about freedom, and loving whoever you want.• The video explicitly shows loneliness, but then the video changes and

everyone starts running around and having fun, showing that all you need is your friends at your side to get through the hard times in your life.• The loneliness is illustrated through the plain white colours in the beginning of

the video, and the fun is shown as the artist throws cake at someone which then shows the two laughing about it, and then people start running around, and the song just exudes happiness.• The song is very uplifting and positive.• It also makes you question who you go to when you’re lonely, which engages

the viewer and makes them wonder.

Language;• In the video towards the end of the song, Foxes and her dancers/actors

are seen to be stood in front of one another which I think is used to represent the Hindu God Vishnu.• As the song is about going to someone when you’re lonely, this

symbolization has a great effect. This is because the God Vishnu is a protector and if you go to someone when you’re lonely, then it could be seen as them protecting you.• The line “The only thing I know is I need you here or you’ll be gone

forever” is used in this song to show her need for someone because of her loneliness. I think it is also used to directly address her audience, due to the use of ‘you’.

Institution;• Foxes is signed to Neon Gold Records, RCA Records and BMG Right

Management, all of which are conglomerates of Sony Music Entertainment.• Sony is one of the ‘Big 3’ major record labels (the other 2 are

Universal and Warner).• Because of this, it means that they are focused on making profit

rather than the music itself.• The record label has lots of money, so Foxes will have had access to a

variety of costumes and settings, and this is also how the video has lots of actors appear in it.

Ideology;• Due to Sony Music Entertainment being a major record label, the

focus of the business is to make a profit, which is more important to them than the music they create.• Foxes ideology will be similar to the institution’s because she is a part

of their label.• She is creating music as a career and so is trying to receive a profit

from doing so.

Audience;• I think the audience Foxes is trying to appeal to mostly in the video for

this song is teenagers and young adults.• I think this because this is the age that people feel mostly alone, as they

have left school and most are either in a job, doing an apprenticeship, at college or at university. This would lead to having to make new friends and feeling alone because they have left their old friends behind.• The audience would then be able to relate to the song and would

therefore be more likely to buy the song and possibly buy her albums or other singles, which mirrors the artist’s/institution’s ideology of making money.

Representation;• The video is represented in a fun way as it is promoting a positive

message through the props used and the lyrics. Although the song is about being lonely and needing someone to be there for you, it is done in an encouraging way.• I think Foxes has consciously made the decision to release a low-

spirited song but sing it in an uplifting way because she knows that her audience are of the younger generation, so doesn’t want them to have a negative view on the world from such a young age.

Cinematography;

• At the beginning of the song, a zoom is used to focus in on the artist, which I think is used intentionally to show that she is singing the song, to prevent confusion for the video. Close ups are then used to illustrate the white objects in the scene which symbolize innocence. After this opening sequence, the camera then zooms out in different shots and scenes which I think is used to prepare the viewer for what is to come next as it is quite calming and relaxing, when the song builds up and gets more exciting and vibrant. When the actors in the video start to throw things at each other and run around, the camera stays still except for the odd zoom in parts. I think this is because otherwise the shot would look too full and confusing.

Mise-en-scene;

• In this video I counted 6 different locations that were used, although some of them were very similar because of the white background used in them. This simply makes the video interesting to watch due to the changes.• Black and white outfits are used in this to create a simple look at the

beginning of the video. The music then changes to being more upbeat and exciting and therefore the outfit changes accordingly; brighter clothes and bolder colours.• The lighting stays consistent throughout the video and is quite bright to

illustrate the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ metaphor. One part in which this changes is the Vishnu reference in the way the actors are placed in the scene, as the people look more like shadows and the light is more behind them.

• Again to keep the viewer interested and to make them want to carry on watching, the artist has a lot of outfit changes. This is also done to support the narrative of the video and to give more sense to what is happening.• The artist has used other actors in her music video to show the

narrative she is trying to demonstrate to the audience. If she was in the video alone, she wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the things she does and also it shows them as her friends and that is what the lyrics are about.

Editing;

• Slow motion is used in this video to create excitement for the viewer because it makes them wonder what is going to happen. This is used in the ‘food fight’ part of the video to look good and to keep the video interesting. I also think this is used in the video to symbolise people’s lives as it shows how you may think you need or want someone in your life but you don’t. This slow motion shows this because people may be slow to realise this and it also shows how someone can mess up your life.• The editing for this video is in time with the pace of the song as this makes

the video look better for the person watching it, as if it was too slow or too fast it would look like it had been quickly made and effortless.

Sound;

• In the video the artist does a lot of lip-syncing for the song, to demonstrate how the she is the only one singing.• In the beginning of the video, there is only music and no lip-synching or

singing. This is used when the camera is zooming in on the artist and focusing on her as the main subject of the video. The music then changes and she starts singing when the camera starts zooming out, which I think creates the effect of losing someone as the camera is moving away from her.• Because the narrative of the song runs alongside the performance in the

video, there is no need for any sound breaks. This makes the video flow a lot better.

Tessa Perkins Stereotypes Theory;• In this video, white props are used to show the actors as innocent and

I think this stereotypes the people as perfect and kind from the beginning. This then changes to them having a food fight, which means that the audience has stereotyped them in the wrong way from the very beginning of the video.• This is an example of how people judge others when they don’t fully

know them, whether it be in a bad way or whether it is in a good way.
