FLYERPROMONOW presents

Y ou should know by now that Starlet LOVES the streets! What can make me love them even more? Valentine’s Day falling on a weekend! Not only

does this mean three days of lovey dovey, but it also means three days of sweet parties! Surely, everybody is “hearting it out” this weekend. Plan to see lots of ladies in their pink & red freak’em dresses. And at the end of the club night, expect the guys to come with those corny “wanna be my Valentine?” lines! I’m ready for it all! The weekend is full of exciting things to do if you have or don’t have that special someone. If you don’t, what better reason to go out & find one, or at least find one for now! So I am looking for the sexiest & most talked about Valentine’s weekend events…and these have been Starletfied…that’s Starlet + Certified!

**FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2010**MONICA LIVE IN CONCERT @ DESTINY NIGHTCLUB

What’s a better way to start of the weekend than with Monica live in concert! I do believe this would be her first show ever to hit Orlando. She will be performing at Destiny Night Club, and advance tickets are on sale at www.versatileelite.com. The show is hosted by the comedian, Chello, and Live Hart is the opening act. They are advertising a bottle of champagne with every VIP table…now why would you want to miss that! Super sexy Valentine’s kick off! So get up with your boo…or get up with your homies.

**SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2010**“F$%K VALENTINE: LOVE IS FOR LOSER PARTY” @ SKY 60 LOUNGE

This three year long running annual party is what we look forward to when Valentine’s is approaching! However, when Barnard Fleurima throws a party, you already know you are going to have a great night. So he decided three years back why not celebrate NOT being in love on the day we all wish we were. Better believe when you there, you forget what love is all about. This party is for “singles, couples, lovers, & heart breakers” as

he so eloquently advertises it. It’s hosted by the birthday boy Lee Sevilla & music by DJ Infa Red On a beautiful pre-Valentines night up on the rooftop of Sky 60, you may just fall in love right in time for Valentine’s the very next day. Believe in the stars…and the alcohol! LOL. Call 407-716-3178 for more details & VIP Cabana rentals.

**SUNDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2010**“BOUDOIR: BEHIND A WOMAN’S CLOSED DOORS”@ CEVICHE TAPAS BAR & RESTAURANT

This is the event I am the most excited about. Simply because it is something different & new! Not to mention, it is the most well put together plan of action for any Valentine’s date. And don’t worry…they have great plans for the single folks too! Just recently, I have been seeing marketing for “Boudoir”, and it is being described as a “sensual, yet classy, dinner dance show”. For a one ticket price, it includes a four course meal including dessert, complimentary glass of champagne, and a burlesque-themed dance show. On top of that, they are offering a pre-order service on great Valentine gifts that you can purchase and have ready & waiting for you at your reserved table. For more info & gift catalog email [email protected].

Don’t I make your party life a little easier? Look at what I did for you…a weekend filled with loving fun! If you have a special someone, take this weekend to show them how you feel. How happy do you think they would be that you have their whole Valentine’s weekend planned out for them. It’s like a cheap vacation! To make it even better, you could rent a room for the weekend so it seems like you really went all out! For those who don’t have a Valentines, even better! You have a whole weekend wide open to fulfill that immediate “I wish I had someone” feeling that you know will go away come Monday February 15. So, if you want more info or have more suggestions, email me [email protected]. Until then….CELEBRATE LOVE! February 15. So, if you want more info

Mert Smith is no stranger to Orlando's nightlife. If you've heard of an event downtown or seen a yer for a nightclub or concert in the last thirteen years, then most likely you were on the receiving end of his work. Mert has been combining cutting edge graphic design and print, the organization of street teams and distributors, and a gift of knowing of how artists and promoters bene t most in

marketing their events, long before most of you were old enough to be in a club. He has been able to see the shifts in trends and learned to adapt in way that keeps him ahead of the curve and on top of his game.

SOME SAY YOUR HISTORY TAKES YOU BACK TO THE FOUNDING OF FRONTLINE PROMOTIONS. IS THAT CORRECT? HOW DID ALL THAT COME TOGETHER?

Just to clear things up, I was never part of Frontline Promotions (FLP). Back in 1995, Pat Nix, Ernest Wilson (now with JADE Events), John Cummings and I had a company called Four Play Productions. In 1999, we all (amicably) went our separate ways. I started Hollywood East and Pat Nix started FLP.

WHAT WAS FOUR PLAY PRODUCTIONS KNOWN FOR?We did large parties & events. Comedy shows was one of our

main strengths. We brought in D.L. Hughley, Bernie Mac, Cedric the Entertainer and other similar big name comedians. We also were the rst to really capitalize on the Florida Classic in Orlando in 1997 and create "Classic Weekend" as a big draw as it is today for nightlife.

HOW DID YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER TO FORM FOUR PLAY PRODUCTIONS? WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO BE A PROMOTER?

Back in the day, Pat and I worked as car salesmen at Toyota of Orlando. We wanted to create a way to get out of working for other people. We ran through a bunch of ideas, but we were inspired by Eightball Productions. This was a company that Disco (Disco & the City Boys) was a part of back in the early 90s. They gave me the inspiration to be a part of the promotions game.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME "HOLLYWOOD EAST ENTERTAINMENT" & WHO ALL IS INVOLVED IN THAT GROUP?

Actually, my mom gave me the name "Hollywood East." About 10 years ago when I decided to form my own company, it was said that Orlando was "the Hollywood of the East." A lot of lms were being shot here and more movie studios are here than people realized at the time. I do have a partner, Dominique "Sunshine D Baby" Maldonado. She came on-board in 2005 working on every local event. She is always on the go and now pretty much handles a lot of the legwork with our out of town events. Hollywood East isn't just in Orlando; We've been doing events in cities like NYC, Atlanta, Chicago and LA for about a year now and she's the face most people see outside of Orlando. Toneye Brown also comes in and directly supports many events with marketing and creative direction.

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT THAN ALL THE OTHER PROMOTERS IN THE CITY?

First of all, I have a very old school approach. I think what sets the company apart here in Orlando is that Hollywood East has presented daytime and evening events, concerts, showcases, live step-shows

Back in 1995, Pat Nix, Ernest Wilson (now with JADE Events),

Orlando's nightlife is saturated with promoters. It's gotten to the point where the occupation "Promoter" doesn't really exist or hold much weight, anymore. There are just a bunch of people throwing parties in the clubs. You'll only nd a few actually putting in the work as a promoter to bring substantially huge events such as Outkast at the House of Blues, Young Jeezy and Li'l Wayne at

Tabu, the Temptations at Hard Rock Live, Celebrity Summer Splash at Wet & Wild, not to mention Diddy & all the Bad Boy family. A promoter like that is classic. A promoter like that is Hollywood East Entertainment. Chris Turner, founder of/is Hollywood East has been in this game for 14 years! Now known most recently for the ever banging "Fat Tuesdays" at Antigua, Chris is more than a veteran. He's one of Orlando's moguls, & should very much be exposed for all his accolades. Where we hold such great promoters as Frontline Promotions & C C's Productions as o cial, Hollywood East is certainly certi ed.

www.flyerpromonow.com | 13

Page 18: fpnorl_30thedition_web2a

14 | www.flyerpromonow.com14 | www.flyerpromonow.com

and comedy shows. Just recently, we started our rst weekly club party called Fat Tuesdays. I've been promoting since 1995 and I've never had a club night, until now. Just being versatile sets me apart. To go from an event with Kirk Franklin, then something with Juvenile, moving onto an event with Diddy, then come back with Frankie Beverly & the Maze in Jacksonville at an arena. I don't think you would be able to box what a Hollywood East event will be. So many promoters are known for one certain "crowd," be it a college crowd, grown folks crowd, reggae crowd. I'm not really known for any particular crowd and like it that way.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START UP FAT TUESDAY? AND WERE YOU ONE OF THE ORIGINATORS OF FAT TUESDAYS, THE PARTY THAT USE TO HAPPEN WAY BACK IN THE DAY?

No, Fat Tuesday is actually the English translation for Mardi Gras, which we all know is the biggest party each year in New Orleans. We just "borrowed" the name. I would never pretend to be the rst to have borrowed that name for a party. I like the name and a lot of people have heard of it before, so I wanted to incorporate it into our party for Orlando. I think it's catchy!

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO A WEEKLY EVENT?Having experienced di erent phases in my career, I'm

now focused on having a "branding" mind-frame and trying to create awareness for the company name. I wanted more consistency for the Hollywood East brand. When you're doing events once or twice a month, you can't really have continuous branding. Now the name is on the radio, on yers, and on the Internet every week for Fat Tuesday and that complements the attention we get for our spot events.

WHAT'S PROSTYLE'S INVOLVEMENT WITH FAT TUESDAY AND IS HE STILL A PART OF IT CONSIDERING HE'S NOT "REALLY" IN ORLANDO ANYMORE?

Prostyle was an important part of building Fat Tuesday as a great DJ and host each week, right along with everything we did to set the tone for the night. The All-Pro family will always be a part of Fat Tuesday and we always show them a lot of love when they come each week. I think it's great that he is in NY full-time doing his thing and we will always consider him family at Hollywood East and Fat Tuesday.

THIS MAY BE A TOUCHY TOPIC, BUT THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME HOSTILITY TOWARDS YOU FROM OTHER PROMOTERS, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

LOL. This is the rst time I've heard of that! Here in Orlando, you have a lot of people who may have negative opinions about you behind closed doors but when they see you in public, they'll shake your hand and everything's ne. I don't know of anyone having any problems with me. I'm a very outspoken guy, so if I have a problem with anyone, they'll know because I will address them directly without making it a public issue.

WHAT OTHER PROJECTS YOU HAVE GOING ON BESIDES PROMOTING PARTIES?

We do a showcase in other cities called Leaders of the New Cool (LOTNC) that my partner, Sunshine D Baby heads up.

That's one of our larger projects going on outside of Orlando that I'm so proud of. LOTNC is an artist showcase where we showcase new talent that we feel is the next generation of hip hop. We've hit NYC, LA, Atlanta and Chicago so far and have other markets in the works. Our next show will be in New York City on February 24th and will be hosted by Angela Yee from Sirius Radio and Heavy-Hitter DJ Absolut from Hot 97. We also have another in Atlanta at the end of March.

Another project I am working on is a concert with Waka Flocka Flame at Tabu. That's going to be co-promoted with Word On Da Street. We had to push that date back due to him being injured earlier this month.

Also, we have my huge birthday party coming up that I'm very proud of. I've never done a birthday party before. I'm one of those promoters who's very humble and very behind the scenes. This year, everybody kinda forced me to. So on February 20th at Rain Ultra Lounge Lebron James will host a birthday party for Mert (owner of FlyerPromoNow and All Graphics & Printing) and me. Mert is a very good friend of mine, so it's going to be great.

I also joined with Frontline & Powerhouse Entertainment on Girlfriend Thursdays at Rain Ultra Lounge. We're going to continue growing the night to the popularity the night once had and was known for.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS ARTIST MANAGEMENT PROJECT YOU HAVE GOING ON?

Yes! I haven't made the formal announcement yet but we just recently signed an artist that we feel is the future of Hip Hop. His name is Slim E (Eric Burns) and he's out of Orlando. I'm very proud of that and I think everybody will be very surprised soon!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING WITH HIM ON NOW?Slim E is already a skilled artist. We are in the "packaging"

stage, but not really rushing out there until everything is completely ready to launch. He's already a great artist, so just in terms of getting the "machine" in order, we are taking our time and not just jumping out there to "test the waters." You want to really know what you have and go with it, stick with it and have consistency.

WHERE CAN WE FIND SOME OF SLIM E'S MUSIC SO WE CAN START LOOKING OUT FOR HIM?

We actually have one single we just started pushing in the clubs a couple weeks ago called "Here We Go." We just want to build a true buzz and create demand for him on a musical level, not just him being visible. We're not trying to get the superstar stamp without the true buzz. A lot of artists today want to be known and be popular with everyone except people who will buy their music. We're more into trying to have a real legacy, a real career.

WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE EVENTS THAT YOU HAVE PUT ON AND WHY?

I've done so many huge events in all these years. But even after doing events with so many great artists like LL Cool J, Ja Rule,

14 | www.flyerpromonow.com

Page 19: fpnorl_30thedition_web2a

8 Ball & MJG, Jeezy, the event I'm most proud of is this step-show we branded called "Stomp Down of O-town" back in 2001. It was a high school step-show at Dr. Phillips High School and a special tribute to Aaliyah, who died that same year. We had a local host, Rod Z and had 4,000 people come to the show with no big names or celebrities. That's common for a college step-show, but has never been duplicated again for a high school step-show. I am very proud of that.

I really loved that event because it was built in the right way, from the ground up. It wasn't surrounded by any big name artists. It was just about the event, a step-show. I like building an event solely around "the event" without trying to use a celebrity name or talent to try to pull people. Fat Tuesday and the Leaders of the New Cool events give me a similar feeling because people have become familiar with those brands instead of any particular performers or hosts.

SO, YOU HAVE YOUR FAT TUESDAY EVERY WEEK AND YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH MERT FEBRUARY 20 AT RAIN. WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE GOING ON PARTY-WISE AT THIS TIME?

Oh, yea! We're doing this huge party in Dallas for All Star Weekend with Allen Iverson & Cash Money with Birdman. Working with Frontline Promotions on that at club Bacy's, formerly Purgatory.

EXPLAIN WHY PROMOTING IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS. BREAK DOWN THE TRUE ESSENCE OF "PROMOTING".

In some ways, I think the game seems easier to get into because of all the outlets on the Internet like Facebook and Twitter. Those are great tools to use when promoting today and weren't available when Four Play Productions and Hollywood East were being built. Having to build a company and, as I like to call it, "get it from the dirt" without those kinds of tools meant having to really sacri ce a lot. We used to pass out our own yers, we didn't have street teams back then. When you sacri ce in certain ways, it makes it more di cult to just "get in and get out." You have to have dedication to what you're building.

I don't have any side or part time jobs, this is what I do full-time. No disrespect to anyone who does work another job. To really want to be a promoter you got to be willing to risk a lot. Sometimes, you will take losses. If you really believe in it you really gotta go after it and put everything out on the line. Nobody sees the stress you have to deal with, all the planning, dealing with managers, booking agents and artists.

You know, it de nitely takes money. It just depends on the types of events you want to get involved with. If you're trying to be a party promoter, that's di erent from a concert promoter or an event promoter. That's like night and day. If you're a party promoter, you can spend a couple thousand dollars and throw a party. When you're doing an event, it could run between $20,000-$100,000 if you're dealing with some real celebrity names. Renting out venues like Hard Rock Live or House of Blues can run you around $10,000 versus getting a club for free or $1000.

Finally, just as it is with any upstart business, you may have to deal with people close to you telling you may need to stop because you have had a couple of losses. That's hard because they care about you and your well-being and they feel like they are telling you something that's in your best interest. But when you feel like you know the game, you know you've got to take the wins with the losses and keep moving. The sacri ces, the nancial risks, the time, the dedication, that's why this game is not as easy as it looks.

TELL ORLANDO WHAT THEY CAN EXPECT WHEN PARTYING WITH HOLLYWOOD EAST ENTERTAINMENT.

You can always expect the best DJs, well in my mind. Shout out to Greg G & Elamentz, my Tuesday-night DJs. DJ D Strong and DJ Caesar spins on Thursdays at Rain. Also, we work with the best two hosts in the city, Disco Jr and City.

WELL, UNTIL Y'ALL START BOOKING ME. LOLLOL, exactly.

RIGHT, SO KEEP THAT IN MIND. SO BEING THE VETERAN THAT YOU ARE, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO YOUR CITY?

We need more communication between the promoters. We need more unity. Lots of people have been talking over the years, but I'm the rst person to call somebody whenever there's an issue or problem. That's just how I do it. I think with more communication & more unity, we all can co-exist, make more money and have fewer problems.

So, when did you fi rst fall in love with hip hop? Were you just a kid blasting music on your boom box so much that the cassette tape popped? Maybe you were a teenager, rushing to get back home after school to catch the latest music videos on Yo! MTV Raps or The Box? Or did you just fi nd yourself bopping your head, while cruising in your car and singing along to those popular songs on the radio? Thinking back to that time when you were introduced to this sound, do you remember how hip hop music made you feel? Now let’s fast forward to 2010. What are your feel-ings and thoughts about it now?

The origin of hip hop music is credited to the 1970s in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. From that point on, hip hop slowly began to migrate to other regions of the U.S. As time progressed, hip hop music’s assimilation to those specifi c regions irrevocably altered the original state

of it and inadvertently, became a new sound of its own (Dirty South, Midwest, West Coast, etc). Today’s sound has been infi ltrated with heavy usage of auto tune, drum machines, digitized beats and synthesizers, a dynamic, futuristic sound that avid old school hip-hop music listeners have never holistically heard before. Although change is inevitable and warranted, much controversy has surrounded this new era of hip hop. Not everyone is will-ing to embrace and adapt to it.

We’ve all heard the complaints that hip hop music is dead or has lost its authentic-ity. Lyrics have been “dumbed down” and some music artists are more focused on cre-ating an image for themselves rather than placing all that creative energy into making "good music." While some might dispute the theory that there is something wrong with the current state of hip hop, one can-not simply deny the notion that it has quite possibly changed.

“I think a lot of people have forgotten the true meaning of music,” says Ayo, an up and coming producer from Orlando who has pro-duced records for artists such as Yung Berg, Ace Hood, Soulja Boy, Dirty Money and Letoya Luckett, to name a few.

“A lot of people do music for the money. To me, it’s more about the passion and for the love. Back then, people weren’t making money like that at fi rst. They did it to express themselves. I think that’s what’s changed about it.”

Indeed, music is used as an outlet for art-ists to freely express themselves, especially in the hip hop community, where image and personal style is essential. Now let’s compare a few hip hop artists with very distinctive images who are topping the charts today

(Drake, Lil’ Wayne, Plies and Gucci Mane) to other artists who were just as prominent with classic albums 10 years ago (Eminem, Outkast, Dr. Dre and Nas). Without taking record sales into account, what differences can you identify? Sure, the styles in music fl uc-tuate like fashion trends, but has the message or mission of hip hop music drastically changed as well or was it lost in translation?

Eminem, a multi-Grammy award winning hip hop artist who some consider to be one

of the greatest rappers of all time, also has strong opinions about the current state of hip hop. In his interview with XXL Magazine last April, Eminem says he isn’t impressed.

“Without naming any names, it just felt like Hip Hop was going downhill. And it seemed like kinda fast…it was like everybody just cares about the hook and the beat; nobody really cares about substance."

So is that what hip hop music lacks today…substance? The message of selling drugs, toting guns, partying, pop-ping bottles, getting wasted in the club and having lots of money, cars, clothes and hoes can only be told so many times. Yet this seems to be the kind of lifestyle some artists depict in their music, whether they truly live it or not. Some will argue that no one wants to listen to “conscious rap” in the club, but the main objective of music is to not only move your feet, it should also move you internally .

“When music neglects our spirit and only touches our ears its science not art,” according to Maestro, a Grammy award winning Multi-platinum producer, who has worked with many hip hop artists including Lil' Wayne, The Game, David Banner, Clipse and Ice Cube. He says he is content with the current state of hip hop.

“It’s in a state of fl ux and expansion, just like the community that infl uences it. Day by day the pioneers of yesterday are getting older, while tomorrow’s trendset-ters are getting younger. New producers cross-pollinate the musical palette, while artists break genre barriers to gain widespread popular appeal. In a word, hip-hop is growing.”

Growth is defi ned as the process of becoming larger and more mature through natural development. In relation to music, it’s irrefutable that hip hop has grown from its birth-place in the Bronx during the 1970s, but we often struggle to differentiate between mere growth and its primary counterpart: improvement. Quite frankly, even a weed grows in rich soil. But before we begin to claim that “hip hop music is dead,” we must fi rst determine what –if anything –is missing.

DJ Envy, a mix tape DJ from New York and the CEO of BLOK Entertainment, thinks what hip hop is missing is the

fundamental skills of how to create music. He shares his opinion about the current state of hip hop in an interview this past January with World Star Hip Hop online.

“I think a lot of these labels are not signing artists and developing these artists and teaching them how to make records and teaching them how to make music. I think they go for that one hit, throw that hit out, sell a million ring tones and then, artists sell 500,000 records, and then they drop them two years later.”

That raises another major concern. Hip Hop artists are struggling to reach platinum status in record sales now more than ever before, especially in comparison to other genres of music. More emphasis is placed on making a radio hit or "club banger" and pushing that one single than producing a well-rounded, classic album. The decline in album sales could be due to the current state of the economy, marketing techniques, piracy or quality in music. Well, that’s a topic for another article, but back to the issue at hand…Is hip hop music dead or is it barely hanging on by life-support? From a listener’s viewpoint, maybe so, but to an artist, DJ or producer, who are the creators and disseminators of music, opinions may vary. Maestro, for example, seems to think hip hop is alive and well.

“The only people who claim hip-hop is dead are those who are killing it,” he says. “That’s because the genre they once knew has evolved, but they haven’t managed to keep up with its evolution. Consequently, they’ve become unable to recognize it in its new form.”

Hip Hop evolved from beat-boxing, pop locking and break dancing to auto-tuning, stanky-legging and swag surfi ng. This could just be a sign of the change in times or maybe it’s a period of a musical decline. Hip hop can be characterized as going through a phase, similar to those awkward pre-teen years, that we all grow out of eventu-ally. However, some may believe it’s beyond the point of recognition and will take a concerted effort to revive. But wherever you stand on this issue, hip hop music should be recognized and respected as an art form…as abstract and conceptual as it often tends to be. #imjustsayintho

“Hip hop is an ocean. You can stand on the beach and cry about the waves or grab a surfboard and ride them. Where you stand in this business will always dictate your outlook on it.” - Maestro

The New Orleans Saints have won their first Superbowl in Franchise History. It was a good game with a couple lead changes that

kept me wondering the entire game if the Who Dat Nation would have a reason to celebrate. I thought Peyton Manning would do what he does best and move down the field, no huddle, and tie the score, giving Indy a chance to still win the game. Instead he threw an interception that was picked off by Tracy Porter which put the Saints up by two touchdowns. Congratulations to the Saints and Saints fans. I’m going to assume that Mardi Gras will be a little more fun this year. For me the presentation of the Lombardi trophy at the end of the game is a little bittersweet. That moment is the end of the football season.

While some players kick back and enjoy the off season, others will spend it wondering what the next step, in this no-guarantees league, will be for them. One such player is Osi Umenyiora who has said that he would quit the league if he has to return in a reserve role, opposed to starting, with the Giants

next season. Is he serious? Who knows? His con-tract is good until 2012 so he can always choose to stay, but like I’ve said before, no one WANTS to be the back-up. Ask Michael Vick, or better yet Plaxico Burress. Plaxico said in his interview with his former coach, Bill Cowher that he plans on returning to the NFL. I highly doubt his plans include riding the bench.

Speaking of riding, one of Tiger’s mis-tresses is upset (LOL, yes I have a dirty mind). Joslyn James is furious with a Canadian com-pany that is selling a collection of golf balls called the “mistress collection.” The set includes a dozen balls (that’s 12 for the

slow people) with pictures of the women linked to Tiger. I’m confused as to what she is upset by, them labeling her a mistress? Or the fact that she isn’t making any money off of it? Either way, I find it hilarious. A set of golf balls called the “mistress collection” I should have thought of that myself. What I have thought about is Tiger and Elin sit-ting down and getting some advice from Kobe and Vanessa on how to make it through a scandal and not only keep but better your career. Vanessa stuck by her man despite his cheating and being accused of rape. That helped much of the public forgive him and focus more on his skills than his personal life. I’m not say-ing one has to do with the other but becoming the Los Angeles Lakers all-time lead-ing scorer is an accomplish-ment that might not have seemed possible during that time. So Kudos to you Kobe that’s a BFD.

30 SECOND TIMEOUT

This timeout is for the New Jersey Nets. To sum it up, they suck! As of press time the Nets are 4-46. On second thought they need more than a timeout, they need a prayer. I mean that’s just embarrass-ing. I don’t know what’s more embarrassing being the Nets or being a team that lost to the Nets. The players are lucky I’m not in charge because if it was up to me I’d be making serious pay cuts. If you ain’t winning, I ain’t paying. That would be

motivation enough for me. It seems to me there is a lack of team morale and

individual drive because when they have good leads they man-age to throw it away and lose. If anyone knows Courtney Lee tell

him I apologize he got caught up in that deal.

The general consensus is that Obama’s State of The Union

speech was brilliant, compelling, insightful, and directly from his heart. This address was sincere,

poignant, and came from the innermost regions of his soul, where love abounds. It was obvious that this presi-dent loves his country, all the citizens and believes that we all are one.

The 90-minute speech, where he laid out his platform and policies for a better America, came from a place where courage and knowledge intersect and genius flows. For a president to humble himself and reach across stubborn belief lines and ideologies took vision and foresight. Race, class, and political persuasions may divide us, but we are all still Americans.

As Americans, our needs are not that different from each other. Basically, we want and need love. We want to be able to provide for our families, and we want protec-tion from any forces that would endanger the pursuit of these basic principles.

In the large scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter if you are Democrat or Republican. As human beings, we have a higher responsibility, and if America is to become a nation where future generations continue to achieve great-ness, we must work together. It must first start at home and eventually it must reach the halls, where our leaders make the laws that we live by.

Throughout Obama’s State of The Union address he continued to emphasize the need for jobs, and the need for the parties to collaborate and work together. In American politics, there will always be a need for negotiation and no party will get everything that they want. Nevertheless, they should negotiate in good faith, and develop a meaning-ful dialogue with no perceived notions.

If everyone’s goal is to improve the state of the economy and the nation, they must be able to work through their differences. There is always going to be a difference in the interpretation of numbers and the success of policies and program. Based on which party is in power, it will deter-mine which party will do the criticizing and look for loop-holes and negativity.

But the president has always been adamant with biparti-san politics, and he demonstrated his belief when the next day he had a Q&A session with the Republicans. Many of the questions were challenging but President Obama has always stated that managing the country would not be an easy task.

In his speech and the next day at his Q&A session, he demonstrated leadership and a resilient attitude. During his speech many times he said he was not going to give up and he believes in the dream of our nation. American values are the guiding principles and American innovation will continue to lead the global economy.

President Obama has had a very difficult first year in office, but some of the markets are beginning to stabilize. The Recovery Act stimulated the economy and for the first time in a year and a half it is growing. In his speech he acknowledged that success would be determined by the success of the economy and the budget.

When the banking system begins to make it easier to get loans, small businesses can expand, and hire new employ-ees, the economy is moving in the right direction. Citizens will begin to have credibility in the government, because the resources are reaching their level.

Many of President Obama’s strategies that he put forth in his speech were excellent. Giving $30 billion back to the small businesses in new tax credits and putting American’s back to work by building and improving the infrastructure is commendable. These are all great ideas but the question is always, “Can Obama Deliver?”

Getting Republicans to the discussion table is one way to resolve some of the conflicts. Making the Democrats more transparent is another way to mend some bridges and stroke some egos. But in the final analysis the president must lead.

Giving brilliant and phenomenal speeches is wonderful but the real work is in the trenches where trust and reality meet the road. The dream of our president is to leave this country better than it was when he started, and better for future generations.
