aRE You ThE

She is tired. She is exhausted. She is worn. But she keeps going on.

Damn her Job Finder is torn…she’ll have to pick up another at the laundry mat.Unfortunately the bin is empty, so she heads to the library wishing the rain would stop.Luckily she finds another and a marked up employment guide that someone has already discarded. She spends hours staring at a computer screen until her eyes can’t focus anymore. Multiple revisions of her

resume and cover letters. Creating endless profiles and job applications.CareerBuilder’s, Monster, LinkedIn, Craigslist, Hotmail, Yahoo, and myjobsearchnow.com

Each specifically aimed at individual job listings to target what they are looking for. She makes sure her resume’s get reviewed by a friend, family or professional recruiter. She is taking this seriously, not just entering generic statements on the computer.Looking, hunting, searching, and exerting all effort.Where do all the jobs hide? She is educated, experienced, and intelligent. She even has a work ethic. How can this and income be combined? Her journey will become epic and her attitude makes all

She is tired. She

is exhausted.

She is worn.

But she keeps going on.

OK people – the Talk of Orlando this week is unemployment. I know, I know. That is the only topic on everyone’s mind. This article is how I hope to combine – a paycheck and my passion. “They” say find your passion and the money will come. You only make

money when you’re having fun. Please allow me this reality check! Not in the form of paper worth money, but in the form of complaints which are founded and plenty. Each person whom is employed has at one point said,” I’m lucky, blessed or safe”, replacing “I work hard and have earned my place!” Unusual the format of this article will be. Blame it on my creative side. Hopefully, you’ll feel me. Unemployment in the state of Florida is at an all time high, 11.4 percent.*(1) Now is not the era of content. Any public assistance found is heaven – sent! Roughly 1 out of 9 individuals have lined up for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program –food stamps).*(2) Many have been denied because they make more than the minimal income requirement, which in my opinion is crap! Finding assistance can be a full time job alone, sometimes making us all want to consider the ways of Al Capone. 1 in every 171 housing units received a foreclosure filing in June 2010.*(3) Thousands of hard working, educated people are losing their homes. For none has this economy been fun. The projection for FL State housing foreclosure (2009-2012) is 1,482,279. *(4) The banks and financing companies decline or delay mortgage restructuring. Yesterday was the time to get the job done. But believe me when I say, God grants us another day! With this, I will plug on; waiting for my “opportunity knocks”. The only difference is I won’t forget my “block”! Please, if you happen to be blessed, help those in need, instead of constantly feeding your own greed. That truly, is the only way we can ALL succeed.

the difference. But where else can anyone go? Within is the answer. She can take time to groom and prepare for each interview. Practicing how she will answer questions in the mirror. She looks up each company’s website no matter how blurry her vision. Educating herself on what type of people work there, and how long. What is the company’s mission? What are the expectations of the position? Does she know anyone that already works in the company to customize her references? She attends several networking meetings, hoping to make an impression. She even makes time to press her suit, telling herself it’s worth sweating while ironing.Bill collectors calling, empty cabinets, aggravated landlords, and mouths to feed are distractions. She fights off thoughts of feeling worthless all because she can’t find a position. For now the roof above her head will depend on the kindness and patience of others; And her infinite determination. There is so much competition for only 500 job positions. 2000 applicants, waiting in line. She remembers like a mantra; “It’s no longer who you know or what you know. It’s who knows you and your ambition.” The difference is what is she doing to market herself? And how well she will listen….

1. SpLIT ENDS: Every 6-8 weeks you should get

your ends trimmed. The e n d s of the hair need this because of flat ironing the hair, the sun, relaxers, color treated, and other various reasons. If you stay on top of getting your ends trimmed and a moisturizing conditioner your hair will continue to grow, if not it will continue to split all the way up the hair shaft and eventually break off.

2. STop poNYTAIL AND WRAp BREAKAGE: Curly, Natural and Relaxed hair are affected by this. If you continually put stress on the sides and back of your hair, it will have breakage. Wrapping the hair the same way everyday will cause breakage as well. Rotate directions in which you wrap your hair and vary the placement of your ponytail so that you’re not putting tension in the same place. Avoid using rubber bands, instead use an elastic band covered in satin yarn, like Goody Ouch-less Elastics.

3. TIRED oF FLAT HAIR: Fine and Relaxed hair is affected by this because it’s too straight or the summer heat. This can be helped by getting curls to add volume or a roller set which gives the hair more body. It also offers two or three different styles, the one you leave the salon with, the one it falls into and after that you can wrap it every night for the last style. Use a satin bonnet to loosely cover your head for bed and maintain your volume and style.

4. KEEpING YoUR NATURAL HAIR STRAIGHT: Natural hair after having more than 3 inches of new growth needs to be trained with a ceramic flat iron

and moisturizing styling products. Try the Chi Ceramic Flat Iron and be diligent about wrapping your hair at night and/or using products that will not weigh the hair down. To avoid giving up and going back to relaxers, try a Keratin Straightening Treatment. This treatment is an intensive conditioning in-salon service that is sealed in with a flat Iron, lasting you 3-4 months, starting at $250.00, but well worth it.

5. pRETTY CURLS, NoT UGLY FRIZZ: Natural Curly hair is affected with frizz due to the humidity as your hair air-dries. Don’t wet your hair daily, try every other day. Use a diffuser on low setting to partially dry hair along with a leave-in moisturizing conditioner and Chi Silk Infusing Oil. This is 100% pure silk and adds moisture, shine, and strengthens your hair.

Oh, Summer 2010. How you blazed through our streets with such intensity. Intense events, intense

temperatures, intense rapidity! I mean, wasn’t last week just Memorial Weekend? Now, here we are already preparing for Labor Day Weekend-summer’s finale. You gotta love this city! Orlando is what I like to call evolutionary. Season by season, we are evolving. With the summer coming close to an end, we still have so much to look forward to in the fall season that is to come. Mainly…that magnificent new arena called the Amway Center! Can you just imagine what our nightlife will be once that opens? Maybe the city will pass a law to extend curfew. LOL. Yea, Starlet, you’re getting to ahead of yourself. The temperatures still read 100 degrees, so let’s get back to this season. For these last weeks of August, I took in more beach time than party time. However, you know Starlet got her party on somewhere!

Yea, I said it…The Groove. The urban nightclub located in City Walk. What would Starlet be doing

out there on a Friday night? Or for any night for that matter? LOL. Well, after a good movie with a couple glasses of wine, I wasn’t ready to call it a night, and it was too late to make it downtown. The vibe is not all what you may expect. Yes it is certainly filled with tourists and foreigners, but the music is hype! Amazing how music can unite cultures, isn’t it? Once you are in, you know right away you’re not in Kansas anymore! Everybody is just having the time of their lives. This crowd is far from any crowd we may be use to partying with. But you have to think about it…they are on vacation…how do you party when you are on vacation? Exactly. LOL. I highly recommend this club for those who want a “mini club vacation” and party where nobody knows their name. Not to mention, the drinks are cheap!

Friday night @ The Groove So, here we are looking at Labor Day

Weekend. I know this city is filled with so much to do. I have already been bombarded with emails for invites and flyers. My schedule will certainly be booked for this upcoming weekend. I want to hear about where you partied at. Who had the best event for Labor Day Weekend? Share your stories, pics, and comments to [email protected]. I am looking for pictures to place in the next Starlet in the Streets. I want to see the good and the bad! Until next time, LET’S CELEBRATE!

Happy Labor Day

Dear Shannon,

What is the difference between a business manager and a personal manager?

-Manager in Training

Dear Manager In Training:

Managing the lives of others, especially artists, can be a hectic profession to undertake. However, a seasoned professional that knows the ins and outs of the Industry can make a very rewarding career for himself and the artist. A Personal Manager usually oversees the daily responsibilities of the artist’s life: scheduling, confirming appointments and handling various duties with the label, media, promoters, and other key personnel. Business Managers on the other hand, may handle the finances, books, payroll and investments. Business managers for major artists may be accountants and finance agents from firms that specialize in the music industry and are knowledgeable about accounting and royalties for complex or large funds. Good luck!

Be Blessed, Shannon

And on to some much needed advice...

Rumors start from some-where right?

Well rumor has it that Carmelo An-thony won’t be in Denver playing as a Nugget for much longer. Melo has yet to sign a three-year $65 Million contract extension. Could the rumors of him joining the

Knicks be true? I hope so. I think Carmelo and Amare Stoudemire on the Knicks is a good look. Af-ter all, the Knicks could use all the help they can get especially if they plan on being a legitimate con-tender in the Eastern Conference.

Speaking of a good look, I had one during the Tampa Bay Buc-caneers vs. the Jacksonville Jag-uars preseason game this past weekend. Sitting on the 50 yard line close enough to yell at the play-ers, and be heard, I watched the Jaguars beat the Bucs on their home field. It wasn’t the best

game but it was a good taste of what is to come. Ev-eryone knows you can’t really judge the ability of a team or its full potential just by preseason games. That is a good thing for both teams, who both made huge mistakes that would have been detrimental

during a regular season game. Nonetheless, it was a good game and I enjoyed myself. Neither of these teams is one of my favs but I will keep my eye on them and see how they develop.

I will also be keeping my eye on the Steelers. With Big Ben sitting out for at least four games the Steel-ers have to rely on Byron Leftwich. Nothing against Byron Leftwich but he is no Roethlisberger and the Steelers are going to struggle, for how long hasn’t been determined yet. The NFL commissioner hasn’t yet announced if Ben will sit out four games or six. My opinion, he should sit out for 6. Let’s face it they definitely show favoritism. Santonio Holmes gets caught with a little bit of greenery and he is suspend-ed for four games. Big Ben is accused of rape and he may only sit out for four games as well. Doesn’t sound fair or equal to me.

Did anyone catch the clip of Larry Fitzgerald catching footballs one-handed while hanging upside down? I did. And not only was I impressed by his skills, but also that six pack. It doesn’t matter how or in what direction he catches balls he can’t win games for his team all by himself.

Who is on a winning streak is the United States Basketball team who still remain undefeated after beating Brazil while I was writing this article. Brazil fought hard though and unfortunately for them they couldn’t make the free throws that would have tied the game and sent them into overtime.

30 Second TimeoutThis one is for for-mer baseball player Roger Clemens. Cle-mens pled not guilty on charges that he lied to congress. Did he learn nothing from little Kim. Se-riously though Roger you have been in the negative news too of-ten. Go find a little league team to coach or something and stay out of trouble and

while you’re at it underage girls’ pants. You can’t for-get that he allegedly had an affair with country singer Mindy McCready when she was underage.

What’s the date? hoW to get BooKed For shoWs.

The one question I get asked daily by my many Artists and DJ’s “How do I get booked for shows?” . The booking process can be tricky . According to EHow .com A book-ing agent is responsible for finding work for individuals working in the entertainment industry .

A booking agent represents the talent and negotiates a contract with the promoters . Promoters are responsible for booking musical acts into concert venues and are the booking agent’s point person . The negotiation process includes reserving the performance dates for the club and determining the band’s fee or percentage of ticket sales . Most states require a special license for booking agents, with California and New York having the most regulation . (Agents are limited to a 10 percent commission.)

The key to getting booked shows is to have great marketing, define your demographic and to have someone on your team who can keep and organize your schedule and negotiate on your behalf . It’s very hard for booking agents to obtain bookings for Artists that Talent Buyers never heard of; so it’s a harder sell . Whereas its easier to book a person who is a Name Talent . So get out there and Market Market! When you have something to book; you should approach a booking agent .

Many Artists often tell Promoters they will open for free . Let me tell you a secret; Promoters don’t care about you opening for free unless you can bring more people through their doors . Why would I want to book anyone that’s not doing anything for my business? As a Promoter I need extra bodies through my door . Also, depending on the right show; it can be a good idea to pay to perform as you would on a major tour . It has to make sense .

Now there are pitfalls to booking agents . As stated above, Booking agents can only commission 10% of your fee . Now there are times where Agents will put more than 10% on top; which can be a bad and good thing . The good thing is that the Agent can make more money; lets face it 10% of $1500 isn’t that appealing especially with all of the time that is spent negotiating deals . Please always consult with your agent on your highest and low-est booking price .

There are many “booking agents” in this entertainment game . The Major Booking Houses that most Name Talent uses are William Morris Agency, ICM, CAA, United and Paradigm . Dealing with these agencies are very corpo-rate and may take a little longer to get bookings done . Now Name talent will also hire independent booking agencies such as Ujamaa, Multi Entertainment, Coach and Mike Lighty . These guys have quicker turnaround time and are able to get your where the bigger agencies can not get such as Nightclubs and Festivals etc . . These Agencies will deal with the Indie concert promoters where as the larger agencies will not .

put their home on the market. Obama’s advisors are standing around scratching their heads and they have no idea what to do.

Many Democrats are extremely upset with President Obama when he made a decision to support the Muslims who are building a community center/synagogue near Ground Zero. This statement by the president created division in the Democratic Party and many of the candidates running for office this year are distancing themselves from the president.

Most American believes that the economy under President Obama has stayed the same or gotten worse. In a poll 56% of the voters disapprove how President Obama is handling the economy. Economic performance is tied to creating jobs, and many feel the population is growing and there are fewer jobs.

Major corporations are outsourcing many of their jobs, because it is cheaper in other countries, and they are only concerned about increasing their bottom line. Many economists have stated that there has been no real wage increase since 1999.

With unemployment at 9.5%, many Americans are angry with President Obama. It is almost impossible for President Obama to create jobs without a major transformation of the financial system. The “old boy system” will have to be challenged by the Obama administration if President Obama wants his approval rating to increase.

President Obama will be forced to change the way the “old boy system” spends money on wars.

America will have to reduce the military budget

and re-direct money to human needs. There

is no reason why the United States needs military bases all over the world, when they can not pay for the education of their children.

It is time for President Obama to take a stand on corruption and if a congress person is caught breaking the rules, they should be forced to resign, and be sent to jail. If President Obama does not improve his approval rating, he will only be a president for one term.

President Obama has two years to turn things around. He has gotten the Health Care Bill passed and the Wall Street Reform Bill passed. It is time for the president to make a change and turn his talk into action.

WHAT DOES PRESIDEnT OBAMA APPROvAl RATInG InDICATE?

On January 22, 2009, President Obama’s approval rating was 69%. His star was shinning bright and Americans expected and believed that a shift and a transformation would take place in Washington. Democrats and independents expected President Obama’s administration would change the antiquated system that is prevalent in Washington’s bureaucracy and not get caught in the government’s red tape.

But last week the president’s approval rating has hit an all time low, and many Americans think the Obama Administration is clueless about what to do about the economy. In the third week of August, President Obama’s approval rating stood at 42%. The average for most presidents is around 54%, and some of our worst presidents were around 41%.

We would like to use the excuse that President Bush had made some bad decisions, but President Obama has been in office for more than a year and a half, and many of his programs are failing. The Obama Administration has a $75 billion flagship mortgage relief program where 1.3 million homeowners enrolled, and now 600,000 have fallen out of the program.

Many claim that the paperwork is a nightmare, and it is hard to get a straight answer out of anyone. It appears that the Obama administration is the same dysfunctional system that he promised that he was going to change. Billions of dollars are allocated to a project and no one has a clue to who is in charge.

Instead of the home industry improving foreclosures, this year they will increase by 100,000 and next year the expectation is that home foreclosures will increase by 250,000. Distressed home sales have pushed down home values and people are afraid to
