Preface This book is a resource into the life and missionary charism of Fr Aloysius Ellacuria CMF The material includes Fathers letters and other writings from 1971 including a presentation of the aims of the original Claretian Missionaries of Perpetual Adoration His writings demonstrate the strongest love of God Our Blessed Mother and love of his founder St Anthony Mary Claret Father Aloysius was unique He had the strongest personality clarity of purpose and unique leadership abilities The order of presentation is chronological The reader is asked to keep an opened mind while reading Except for the important article entitled The Seventh Angel of the Apocalypse written by Fr Aloysius Ellacuria CMF and included in the Appendix this collection is presented in a chronological order As more of his writings become available the influence of Fr Aloysius will grow This small collection of his writings is actually a culmination of Father Aloysius 50 years as a professed religious in the congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Fathers piety and devotion harmonizes perfectly with the Fatima event of 1917 The work of Fr Aloysius continues today and it represents a blossoming of devotion and authentic piety As such it is relevant for all of us today Please forgive my technical mistakes I expect these should be corrected in future editions and I hope the reader will help will the feedback process Also I consider the publication of this literary correspondence as a beginning of process of discovery of who Father Aloysius was and why his work is so important

Introduction

The title of this work is The Fatima Protocol As the reader will soon become aware there is a protocol or a step by step carefully followed procedure which emerges in the pages of this book As you begin to read you will note the development of a fascinating dynamic It is evident that Fr Aloysius was inspired More importantly he took action He was not a dreamer His actions were bold and decisive They were nourished by prayer his love of God the Church Our Blessed Mother and his founder St Anthony Mary Claret This is the basis for Fathers understanding of the events in Fatima Portugal in October 13 1917 When I first met Fr Aloysius Ellacuria CMF he said nothing about Fatima or the pious devotions related to the message of Our Lady of Fatima or the fact that he was in the process of founding a religious congregation of men However he did encourage me to say the holy Rosary and every day He wrote to me in response to a question I had about prayer and he said that after the Holy Mass the Rosary is the most power prayer That was in the summer of 1970 - one year before the events treated in this book Within a year and trough Gods Grace I became very closely associated with him This is how it happened During 1971 Fr Aloysius was preparing a group of young men to enter the Claretian Novitiate in Fatima They were to become Claretian semi-contemplatives or Claretians living a deeply interior spiritual life which would fuel their activities as missionaries Fatima Portugal was where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917 Fr Aloysius celebrated Mass on the 1st Saturday of every month and people would gather ahead of time to pray the Rosary and to go to Confession while the rosary was being recited It was after one of these 1st Saturday Guild Masses that

Fr Aloysius introduced me to a young man named Charles Carpenter whom Father referred to as Charlie Fr Aloysius said he wanted us to become best of friends Charlie was living in a studio apartment on Norton Drive not far from the Claretian Provincial House located at 1119 Westchester Drive in Los Angeles California He was employed at Barones Italian Restaurant on 10123 Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake California He worked as a bar tender at the restaurant of Tony Arpaia one of Fr Aloysius closest friends More importantly Charles worked as Father Aloysius secretary We were downstairs in the assembly hall of the Claretian Provincial house and after one of the Saturday Guild Masses Charles asked me Do you want to go to Fatima I already known the story of Our Lady of Fatima and the events which took place on October 13 1917 So Charles invitation sounded like a wonderful spiritual adventure Without hesitation I said Yes This is how I was invited to join the group preparing for seminary life in Fatima The group would gather regularly with Fr Aloysius usually at the home of Fathers benefactors During these get togethers we would discuss the plans for the Claretian Missionaries of Perpetual Adoration Then he sent three of us to Portugal to meet the Provincial Superior of the Claretians in Portugal We acted as scouts for the others I was one of the three The others were Joseph Langford from El Cajon California and Charles Carpenter I am thankful to Our Lord and Our blessed Mother for the confidence Father Aloysius would place in me My early association with Father Aloysius and his group would lead me by and by to appreciate not only Father Aloysius but the spiritual life and the Catholic faith

I wish to thank you for publishing my article in Soul Magazine You have helped to make Saint Anthony Mary Claret better known and loved the world over as the forerunner of Fatima and have brought more devotion to him by making him the Patron of the Blue Army The Blue Army is your greatest apostolic work among your many others for Our Blessed Mother though you are so eminent as an author of spiritual books This brings me to tell you something important which is to be done this year on the anniversary of the last apparition of the Blessed Mother on October thirteenth Imagine dear John that this is coming from Saint Anthony Mary Claret the great Patron of the Blue Army It is coming from one of his sons under the special inspiration of such a father as he is to me and also to you John since you have proclaimed him as the special patron of the greatest of your apostolic and Marian accomplishments In the past few years God in His great Goodness has been sending many vocations to me Most of these vocations have a monastic leaning and want to serve God with much prayer and apostolic work as its product These young men are asking for more than is given in present-day seminaries At the same time they dont want a completely cloistered life At present their

number is growing and meanwhile I am praying that God will provide a semi-contemplative monastery where they will love and serve Him the best When I visited Fatima last November it came to me that this might be where it could be founded With these young men I have been discussing this great possibility even to the minor details of it and here I would like to present it to you These applicants would like to be called Claretian Semi-Contemplatives Clerics of the Blue Army This could provide a choir to sing at the shrine of the Blessed Mother -- sort of a replica or reflection of the Montserrat Gregorian chant of the monks and of the young choristers of that famous Monastery who try to emulate the Angelic Choirs Fr Tomas de Manzarraga CMF the greatest authority in Gregorian Chant in the world is most willing to help us and even to be a member I talked this over thoroughly with him when I was in Spain this past November Father Manzarraga has organized his choristers in Madrid and was a special music tutor to Francos grandchildren The best of the clergy in Spain in Gregorian Chant are his pupils He has a doctorate in Gregorian Chant and studied in France at the great Archabby of Solesmes and in Paris The habit of the monks is to be a dark blue cassock with the same color of sash with tassels They will wear in choir a rochette which is what and falls below the waist and over which is worn a thin cope dark blue as the cassock The monks should use the Chant of the Office of the Blessed Mother They will follow the Claretian Rule and keep the CMF since Saint Anthony Mary Claret is the Patron of the Blue Army and the Forerunner of Fatima But this Rule will be modified to fit a monastic life Some Portuguese Claretians should be a the head of the monks in their main duties Every nationality should have admittance to this community but we want to have the complete trust and understanding of the Portuguese The Bishop of Leiria and Father General in an amiable way will have perfect control of these

monks Both of them must be of one accord in regard to everyone and everything in this particular monastery that will be the soul of the Blue Army Dear John you are the great founder and organizer of the Blue Army This would be the completion of it I have been praying and will pray that this comes to a happy issue But you are the instrument John With you we can without you we cannot The aim is to eventually have perpetual adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament at the large Shrine They can start with adoration on special feasts then later on when the monastery becomes better organized they could have it very often and finally at all times I can provide the best of vocations from America for this monastery I already have several in preparation in case this is founded The community would be composed of Father Students and Lay Brothers The Father would be for singing the Office at the sanctuary of the Shrine and to carry on the different duties of the Blue Army The Students should study in one of the seminaries in Fatima The Lay Brothers should be well educated for domestic or farm duties They should know the new methods of cultivation how to improve the land and use new farm machinery They could have a vegetable farm owned by the monastery somewhere in Fatima with orchards and a large field for wheat or other grain This could help them for their own needs and also they could sell some of their produce for their support and always have some for charity for the poor Some of the community could be secretaries to provide help in Blue Army centers and they could also be advertised in Soul Magazine for their needs But we need a monastery And here we come to you Mr Haffert humbly asking for your help -- to supply one of the religious houses in Fatima that are closing down from lack of means This would be a tremendous asset to Fatima to bring the blessings of God In case there is no other place available our

Claretian Fathers in Fatima could dispose of their place for us They are willing to sell but I dont know their stipulations I have spoken to the Father Provincial in Lisbon about this project He likes it and so does Father General New talks will be necessary Here again John you are needed for these transactions This is the best crown you can put on the Blessed Mother on the silver anniversary of Her Queenship in Fatima as Queen of the Universe Along with the monks we plan to have little Franciscos and Jacintas These are boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 14 to sing in the choir They will all be dressed the same way as the original Francisco and Jacinta This would complete Fatima and make it unique in the world and most attractive and devout of all the shrines in Europe Franciscos and Jacintas carrying on their banners the portraits of the two little future Saints would become a new devotional and inspirational practice to start a new legion of innocent children going on the footsteps of Francisco and Jacinta to love the Blessed Mother to recite the Rosary and to practice the virtues demonstrated by these two children to an heroic degree particularly in their life of penance and prayer Our first procedure is to get permission from the Father General of the Claretians He will be here in Los Angeles in May when I will speak with him But first I would like to know your reaction dear John and how willing you are for this project because without you there would be nothing After this there must be perfect understanding between the Bishop of Leiria and Father General Thus we should find out how the Bishop of Leiria likes the idea in general since he is the Ordinary of Fatima and now the spiritual head of the Blue Army instead of Monsignor Colgan If you are willing dear John to help us with this kind of monastery that will be the soul of the Blue Army it would be so nice if you could introduce it to the Bishop of Leiria and then to Father

Dear John this has been in my mind for a long time and I have great confidence in coming to you Help the Blessed Mother of Fatima during this Silver Jubilee of Her Queenship All the little pains that you might have in organizing this will be crowned by Her with much added glory If we could start by October 13th this year no matter how small our start is we could have the solemn opening of it at that time Will you request permission from Father General to have me there for the opening of it To found a religious community within earshot of the bells of the Shrine of Fatima would be the great legacy of the Blue Army to the world It would add a permanence to the Blue Army that would insure its growth and fervor until the end of time as the real soul of the Blue Army The Father could carry on the sanctification of souls as requested by the Blessed Mother by preaching the message of Fatima It would be nice too if they could have a retreat house where people from all over the world could come for a place of recollection Now may we go to another point this is also very important and dear to me I have founded a congregation of Sisters called the Daughters of Saint Anthony Mary Claret a teaching and nursing order They dress in light blue and wear the While Scapular of the Immaculate Heart visible over their habit Their approval has been requested since July 10th 1970 Since there is

no hospital or clinic in Fatima what about your starting of and calling my Sisters to staff it Do not say no my dear John By the way John we have a second Claretian Cardinal in Rome Cardinal Arthur Tabera He is going to be the head of a new Roman Congregation founded by the present Holy Father Pope Paul VI Brother M Yaroslave Dowbush who at present is staying at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity in Huntsville Utah has written to me and I have explained everything to him about the new Claretian Monks and have asked him to join this group You should also encourage him to join With all my prayers for you to Saint Anthony Mary Claret so that he may bless you forevermore with all the power of intercession granted to him in HeavenYours in the Immaculate Heart of Mary

My Dear Children in the Blessed Mother of Fatima and the Most Holy Eucharist On the 24th of this month of May I interviewed the Most Reverend Father Anthony Leghisa CMF the Superior General of our Claretian congregation After his examining most carefully all my petitions he was most paternal and most generous in granting every petition Now we all must consider and believe that this is the work of God because we have the full approval of the supreme authority of the Claretian Fathers Our Most Reverend Father General is going to be in Fatima in the Month of October as well as Mr John Haffert and I There we will discuss and settle all about your future home and monastery by the grounds of the Cova da Iria where the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917 It gives me an untold and I might say eternal joy this approval from our Father General It also awakens in me such an immense gratitude to God in the person of my Most Reverend Father General All the prayers that we said for Father General have been answered most favorably I see him enlightened in the most charismatic way by the Holy Spirit True light illumines his mind and true fortitude strengthens his will My dear children from now on and forevermore your aim in life is to rub shoulders with our own holy father Saint Anthony Mary Claret on the holy

3 Expression of a Possibility of a Project

Here I come most humbly to express to your Reverence in person the possibility of a project which I explained as I was passing through Lisbon last November to Very Reverend Fr Juan de Freitas Alves CMF the incumbent Provincial of the Portuguese Province First and uppermost I told Very Reverend Fr de Freitas Alves to relate to your Reverence dear Father General and even to make his very own the possibilities of establishing Perpetual Adoration in Fatima as a tribute on the Centennial of the death of Saint Anthony Mary Claret who was the living monstrance of the Most Blessed Sacrament He was very cordial and like the ideas I proposed to him which were repeated again in a letter to him on March 23rd Here is an excerpt from that letter with those ideasI told you then (in November) dear Fr Provincial about my great and most eager desire to have in Fatima a Claretian Community that would have Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament but also would have a retreat house for any Claretians from any part of the world and also for priests and religious visiting Fatima I have written to Mr John Haffert the founder of the Blue Army asking him to help us in this possible project and in case everything goes well to make it a part of the

Blue Army so that the Claretians since Saint Anthony Mary Claret is the patron saint of the Blue Army could be the chaplains of the Blue Army with our Founder as their spiritual leaderThe very Reverend Father Provincial Alves answered favorably Here is a quote from his letter of April 22 1971I know that Reverend Father General will soon visit the USA You could speak to him about the Fatima case On our part we confirm the various possibilities We will begin the Novitiate this year with only 14 novices though the house has capacity for 50 or moreThe Bishop of Leiria is our very good friend And we have a very good relationship with the Blue ArmyMr John Haffert in his answer to a letter I wrote to him on March 9th writesI was certainly interested in your wonderful letter I will do what I can to help with your projectMr Haffert wants to see me in person as he says in the same letterthis is a matter of such great importance that we should discuss it in person This year Very Rev Father General is the Golden Jubilee of my Religious Profession I request from Your Reverence permission to go to Fatima during the month of October to see the Very Reverend Father Provincial and Mr John Haffert who is going to be there during that month and then bring to Your Reverence and to your General Government the propositions of our Portuguese Provincial Government helped by Mr John Haffert and possibly by other benefactors who already have promised financial help The Very Rev Fr Provincial Juan de Freitas Alves stated last November and also in his letter of April 22nd his willingness to accept into our Claretian Novitiate in Fatima a group of American

young men that I have been training to enter our Congregation in Portugal and to remain there unconditionally There will be over ten of them for students and about five for lay brothers I will see to it that they are properly qualified that their documents are complete and that every requisite to leave their families and country be properly filled making sure this way that there is no hindrance on any side neither from parents nor government to their following their vocation Thank Your Reverence for your extreme graciousness to my proposals and with my deepest gratitude to Your Reverence for your tremendous help with your charism of discernment of spirits with which the Holy Spirit has endowed Your Reverence so profusely for the proper and sure guidance of our beloved Congregation May this pastoral visit of yours to our Province be one that will make real history in the annals of our Claretian institute

I discussed Father Ellacurias plan with Father Alonso the Claretian Father who will be in charge of the Pontevedra project I was surprised that without hesitation he thought the plan an excellent one and is really in favor of it So I suppose this means that without a doubt Father Ellacuria will be able to use the Pontevedra Convent for this project So it looks as though something great and glorious will come of it all The idea that these men should be trained to work throughout the world for the Blue Army is simply tremendous And Pontevedra is the right place because it is the spot -- the very house -- where two of the major apparitions took place and in particular the two relating to the establishment of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary throughout the world Father Ellacuria is fortunate to have a friend like you who can help him with the financial necessities for supporting the men in the Convent The Blue Army is buying it With every best wish I remain

5 An Extraordinary Favor To The Congregation

Greetings for having won the great holy lottery of the Convent of the Dorothean Sisters of Tuy Pontevedra through the generosity of John Haffert so grateful to Your Reverence for your valuable works I consider this as an extraordinary favor of the Immaculate Heart of Our Most Holy Mother of the Congregation in the most worthy person of Your Reverence Thank you for your invitation to help me in my project of Claretian Perpetual Adoration which I intend to establish in Fatima

6 Fr General approved the project from his heart

August 4 1971Very Reverend and Beloved Fr Alves Our greetings and thanks I will give you the following news The Most Reverend Father General approved from his heart the project of Claretian Perpetual Adoration in Fatima The Most Reverend Father General will go to Fatima in October Also I will go to Fatima in October to meet with Your Reverence and with Father General and with the Bishop of Leiria and with Mr John Haffert Once we have made the arrangements between Your Reverence and the Most Reverend Father General and your servant we will pay Your Reverence and our Portuguese Province the monetary value of the real estate - the Novitiate house and property in Fatima With the approval of Father General we are thinking of paying Your Reverence the complete cost of the building and adjacent land of the Novitiate as soon as we are able There is a financial company in San Diego California USA whose director is my spiritual son and he has invested $300000 American dollars to pay whatever debt is contracted by this budding Claretian group of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Fatima I myself will go to Fatima accompanied with some twenty young aspirants so that they do their year of Novitiate with your Portuguese Novices in Fatima These youth will be the first fruits for the project of Perpetual Adoration This letter is going to be presented to Your Reverence by one of these Claretian aspirants of Perpetual Adoration They are all very chosen and they have great ideals to become truly saints in the style of Claret I think I will be about a month in Fatima to facilitate my American Aspirants in their new life in the Old World

Very Reverend Father AlvesThank you so much for your warm and most paternal hospitality to our future Claretian Missionaries of Perpetual Adoration When they arrived here in Los Angeles they told me how good you were toward them and that you gave them your full permission to return in October to make their novitiate in Fatima with the other novices of your holy Province of Portugal

The three young men explained to me that on the seminary grounds a piece of land has been sold They said that this piece of land is really a part of the rectangular lot next to the seminary Your Province wants this piece of land that Father Barros said costs about $10000 (USA) I have ordered to send you $10000 (USA) to purchase this land for your seminary If more money is needed to purchase this land we will bring it in October But buy it yourself at once before they know that anyone from America will live there If you have any money left over place asset it as a gift to the Portuguese Province for anything you wish I am profoundly grateful to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to Saint Anthony Mary Claret to Father General and to yourself and your entire Province of Portugal May this project turn out to be for much glory to God for the greater sanctification of the entire Claretian Congregation and for the good and salvation of

September 3 1971My dear Father This letter is above all to thank Your Reverence once more for being the providential instrument of the Blessed mother and Saint Anthony Mary Claret to received in your Province these fifteen Americans Twelve of them would like to be priests Three of them lay brothers With the Full permission from Father General I am so extremely happy in placing these fifteen aspirants in your hands Very Reverend Father Herein are their names and addresses in America I am collecting all their documents that I will take along with me as I will accompany them early in October We do not know the date as yet In regard to their testimonials for entering the Novitiate we will apply as soon as we arrive in Portugal I dont want to do it here for the simple reason that the Archbishop might stop me thinking that I am taking away from the Diocese these vocations But in Fatima either the Superior or the Master of Novices will sign the petition not I This way we will have no problems with the Diocese of Los Angeles They are going straight from their homes to your place I have been their spiritual Father and director but none of them have ever applied to the Claretians in America I just got them when they came to me as lay young men for spiritual direction And I found them with vocations for religious and priestly life of a semi-contemplative nature But I wanted them to be Claretians When Father General asked me if I wanted to make them independent from our Congregation because of the their semi-contemplative vocation I told him ldquoBy no means I love the Claretian Congregation too

much to do anything like that They are going to join your Province and I agree with all the observations and directions you so wisely gave to Charles Carpenter and to Joseph Michael Langford My I tell you in all sincerity my dear Father Provincial that you are wonderful and that you have given me a perennial joy that will last for all eternity And Saint Anthony Mary Claret is going to reward you very richly And this is not a compliment but my heart is so full of gratitude that I had to tell you this You dear Father have been my first and best encouragement for this project of Perpetual Adoration since early last November when I spoke to you And you prepared the way by speaking to Father General so that when he came here for the visit I found him most propitious And he told me in a prophetical way that this project will lead us to something even better Here are Mass stipends all of them one dollar Mass stipends totaling $38800 I have listed the Mass requests on another sheet included There are two checks here one is for $20000 and the other is for $18800 Included also is a sample letter that you must recopy exactly as it is in English French and in Portuguese (which you are the one to translate) Use your own Claretian stationery sign all three copies and put the official seal of your Province of Portugal over your signature to make your three letters valid as official documents Keep copies in the Provincial files and mail the originals to the Consulate of Portugal in Los AngelesConsulate of Portugal 1800 Avenue of the Stars - 307Los Angeles California 90067 USAHurry up with this because it is necessary for us to leave the United States And notify us in the same mail about your sending them to the Consulate We need this so that we can start our negotiations

Very Reverend dear Father As I was about to mail these letters to you one very important thing came to my mind It is that Your Reverence write to Father General informing him that our project of semi-contemplatives that he approved here in Los Angeles in the Provincial House when he visited us for the Provincial Chapter is now fully studied and approved by Your Reverence You can tell Father General also that you are welcoming him for October as he promised that he would come to Fatima Portugal to speak with you and settle this project Most Reverend Father General told me time and again that all this depends almost entirely from Your Reverence Very Reverend Father Provincial If you approve of it he will approve it If you are happy about it he will be happy about it And he will approve it the way Your Reverence wishes I am so very happy that Your Reverence has been such a providential Provincial I have no doubts that the Almighty God through the Immaculate Heart of Mary Saint Anthony Mary Claret and all our Claretians of Heaven are going to bless you dearest Father very very much on Earth and in Heaven for all eternity I say this in all my sincerity and in all my gratitude to God and to Your Reverence

His marvelous instrument The reason I wish Your Reverence to inform Father General now about all this project is because he is expecting a good information about it all The reason I wish that Your Reverence does it instead of me ndash there are two reasons for this 1) Your Reverence writing to Father General about it you as the head of our Claretian Portuguese Province incorporate this project into your own Province and Father General will be tremendously happy and his counselors will not have any major objections 2) If I wrote to Father General instead of Your Reverence possibly the General consultors would put in objections particularly the American consultor Father Cirone and he even would write back to the Provincial Curia of Los Angeles trying to stop me from going ahead Sorry to say Father Cirone is quite liberal and I donrsquot trust him Sorry to say this but God has given me much intuition to know people and their intentions Here is also a photostatic copy of the document signed by Father General approving lsquoin principiordquo this our project I enclose it for your records in your Provincial archives Father General took a copy of this for his records In our next mailing we will include the timetable for the Novices of the semi-contemplative vocations You are free to modify it in anything that you think should be corrected and changed

11 Portuguese Provincials Proposal and Acceptance - September 8 1971

(In early August of 1971 Fr Aloysius sent three of his group to Portugal They made the best of impressions on Father Provincial and the other Claretians in both Fatima and in Lisbon The Claretians treated the three as brothers of our brother nothing less On September 8 1971 the Portugese Superior wrote to Fr Aloysius greeting him fraternally and thanking Fr Aloysius for the letter which Joseph Langford presented him dated August 4 He also thanked Fr Aloysius for his letter of August 26 with a check for $10000 Here is a summary of the letter)

1) About the real estate in Fatima it was not the case that the property referred to by Fr Aloysius could be purchased During the recent Fatima Congress the property owner told him the property was not for sale In any event he has the money to negotiate whatever Father Aloysius wanted when Father arrived

2) The Superior General in Rome during August said nothing to him about the matter He didnt agree to come to Portugal that year

3) He asked God to bless the procurement formation and conservation of contemplative vocations The Eucharistic Heart of Mary charisma of Claret would gain much if we had even just a few dedicated exclusively that is full time Also he would like to have these aspirants in his province

4) After studying the project with his council on the 30th of August he was opened to collaboration However he wanted more specific details something written about the aims and

objectives -- Something in the form of a written agreement between the two parties

He had two proposals One that the young men come to the province under the responsibility of Father Aloysius and the province sell or rent the house for the work and the province would remain on the sidelines of Father Aloysius work The other possibility is that the candidates would seek entrance into the Province one by one The Province would study each and would enter into an agreement with each one No one would come without permission

They would not sell their house in Fatima to any non-Claretian person or entity The best solution would be to sell to the Congregation in the person of Fr Aloysius with the authorization of the general Government

5) Moving to the more urgent aspects

a It seems imprudent to bring many before we agree upon the conditions objectives rights and dutiesb It would be ideal to have a Master of Novices who speaks English which we dont havec We dont want any to leave our provinces without the approval of their superiors which you understandd As free postulants wanting to remain in our province always according to the conditions we have studied with them on August 22 1971 in Fatima Joseph Langford and Charles Carpenter are admitted

12 Father Provincial Has Taken Great Interest in This Project

While your General Visitation took place here in Los Angeles I presented to Your Reverence on May 28 1971 a little document to sign the approval in principio of the Claretian project of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Fatima in memory of the centennial of the death of Saint Anthony Mary Claret and of the outstanding miracle that Our Lord performed by remaining Eucharistically in his body during the last nine years of his life And most of all to be true to our Claretian tradition to fulfill the wish of our beloved Father Founder to have all the time in some part of his Congregation the Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed I thought that the best place for this should be Fatima for several reasons

1) It was the Angel of Portugal in 1916 who brought the Blessed Sacrament under both species to the three fortunate seers Lucia Jacinta and Francisco

2) Because Fatima since 1917 has been and is considered the holist place in the world

3) Because our dear Father Founder Saint Anthony Mary Claret has been promoted by the Bishop of Leiria Ordinary of Fatima to be the patron and generalissimo-in-chief of the

Blue Army of our Lady of Fatima that counts over 20000000 people all over the world

Since your Canonical vista Most Reverend Father I have been corresponding with the Very Reverend Father Joao de Freitas Alves CMF the incumbent Claretian Provincial Superior in Portugal because Your Reverence told me several times how this project would depend almost entirely on our Provincial of Portugal and that you didnt want to go in any way against his wishes The Very Reverend Father de Freitas Alves has stated time and again that he wants this project and I quote his letter of September 8 1971 that I received today

I ask that God bless the procurement formation and conservation of the these contemplative vocations the whole Congregation would benefit from this Eucharistic-Heart-of-Mary charism of Claret if we had a few dedicated to this exclusively full time I would like to have them in our Province

Beginning with my meeting with the Reverend Father Provincial Joao de Freitas Alves on November 2 1970 when I first spoke to him of this project he has taken great personal interest in the matter And I am most willing to be subservient to his wishes and directions and decision Really Most Reverend Father General there is no problem in this forthcoming project because it is going to be incorporated into the Claretian Portuguese Province at the request of Father de Freitas Alves I am finishing with Father de Freitas Alves the final transactions to be presented to Your Reverence when you come to Fatima in October as you stated you would when you were here The Very Reverend Father de Freitas Alves stated that you did not mention this project when he visited you this past August in Rome Perhaps under the weight of your office and you being the Father General have so much on your

mind it is natural that you didnt mention anything or because Your Reverence wanted to hold this matter in confidence because of prudence I sent Father de Freitas Alves a copy of the document you signed on the 28th of May 1971 Your Reverence gave me your permission to go to Fatima in October for my Gold Jubilee of Religious Profession When I go to Fatima I intend to bring the aspirants whose papers showing all their qualifications are being sent now to Father Joao de Freitas Alves and his Provincial Government according to their wishes and I quote his letter of September 8 1971

The candidates should ask to enter this Province We will study case by case and make an agreement with each one No one comes without permission

Really Most Reverend Father General I am perfectly willing and happy to make every concession to Father de Freitas Alves as he requests them in this recent letter and as he will be requesting them in the future

Someone dear Father might possibly ask why I am sending this group to Fatima instead of introducing them into our Province here These particular candidates have been coming to me for spiritual direction And upon my detecting in them the vocation for the religious life and the priesthood they expressed in their generosity with God their desire to offer themselves to Him some place or in some seminary either here or abroad where they could commit themselves to Him with perfect generosity and self-surrender by leading a more ascetical life than is required in the present-day in most of the seminaries whether religious or secular I have saved them for the Claretian Congregation I have been directing other young men to other religious orders or monasteries into which they were attracted and some to the secular seminary One of those young men is now the Abbot of the

Trappist Monastery in Utah whose name is Dom M Emmanuel Spillane And I dont want to boast but out of our own Claretian Novitiate of the Western Province in Calabasas this year three of the four Novices were my own spiritual sons whom I brought to the Congregation And the fourth one is there because I convinced him to enter and stay by solved his problem with he came to me So no one can complain that I am not working for this Province I have brought through the years quite a few vocations to the Congregation among them the two incumbent Claretian Provincials in the East and the West Father E Grainer and Father B OConnor T brought them to St Judes Seminary in Momence Illinois right from their grammar schools as they were finishing their eighth grade while I was rector of St Judes Seminary

Father the last Marian Congress this August 1971 in Fatima I sent three of the aspirants for this project of Perpetual Adoration to meet Father de Freitas Alves and to see by themselves before I send the entire group what they were going to be up against in Fatima in particular and in Portugal in general The three linked it there very much and were very well received by Father de Freitas Alves as he says in this letter of September 8 1971 I can say that the three aspirants have left me and in ours of Fatima and Lisbon the best impressions Father de Freitas Alves told them that he has always desired to start this kind of project but until now he has not had the opportunity

May I add too Most Reverend Father that I have some capitalist friends in San Diego one of them my own spiritual son who right after your approving in principio this project of Perpetual Adoration came to me promising seriously that he and his associates are going to help us with this foundation of Perpetual Adoration with their financial backing And this intention came to them without my asking them at all I consider this as a signal

demonstration of Gods Goodness and as a ratification of His pleasure because of your decision of May 28 1971 This financial help is going to go through the Portuguese Claretian Province for his project since this project is going to be incorporated into the Province of Portugal by meeting with Your Reverences approval and that of Father de Freitas Alves Although being fully Claretians this project will have some sort of autonomy in regard to their prayer life centered around the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament praying day and night for our entire Claretian Congregation Again this is not to any detriment to my own Province here which I have helped financially more than anyone else so far because of Gods Mercy to me In one occasion I was $600000 which a lady Rose Virginia Jackman gave me to build our Novitiate in Calabasas Another lady by the name of Marie ODonnell gave me $30000 for the chapel of the Scholasticate in Calabasas Another lady Mars Salisbury gave me $18000 to build the seminary in Osaka Japan In former years when Fr Richard Trevino was the Provincial Treasurer and Fr Michael Cecere was the Provincial Superior and I was then as I am now residing at the Provincial House my income as $25000 a year as Fr Trevino himself stated publicly in one of the provincial gatherings where all the superiors of our Claretian Western Province were present In the three years while I was superior and pastor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in San Antonio Texas (that our Congregation owns) I obtained from my benefactors $180000 to refurbish the church the house and the founds without any help from the parish which is extremely poor In like manner many other large donations have been rather constantly flowing to me Lately there was a last will of one of my clients Mrs Rattigan for $75000 that goes into our Western Province Last Christmas I received $7000 in donations and $3000 in Masses I say all this to protect myself from any possible objector at present or later who might ask why those

capitalists of San Diego dont spend their money in this Province I love with all my heart the Congregation in its entirely and I have never felt the least temptation against my vocation having all this money in my hands At the same time I say in all sincerity that I never did deserve from the Almighty God any of these attentions through His people But I feel ever so thankful to His Infinite Goodness to Me and because of it He will continue helping me up to the end Now dear Father General I am going to ask you two things As your spiritual son I feel full confidence in dealing with Your Reverence and I know that all your subjects feel the same because we all became very fond of your during your last visit both conservatives and liberals First to remind Your Reverence as your stated to me several times that you will come to Fatima in October Second Father de Freitas Alves tells me in his much quoted letter of September 8 1971 It would be opportune to put in the Novitiate a teacher of the English language which we dont have I have a little suggestion to make One year ago when I passed by the Province of Cantabria I found in their Apostolic Seminary of Salvatierra a priest quite gifted in languages He was rather good in speaking English to me He was able to maintain a regular conversation in the English language and seemed to be a good and rather sociable Claretian He is Fr Juan Villanova CMF May I have the boldness of asking Your Reverence to intervene with the Provincial of Cantabria to ask him to loan Fr Villanova to us for this project in Fatima for two or three years Thank you so much Father General for sending Fr Domingo Jaurrieta to Fatima because he is a genuine Claretian But in the beginning he will have a language impediment which Fr Villanova does not have Now as a verification of this project to have Perpetual Adoration in Fatima nothing better than to send to Your Reverence a photocopy of the letter of September 8 1971 from

Father Joao de Freitas Alves CMF for your records and also for your paternal consolation I know how much it means to Your Reverence that Father de Freitas Alves be willing and how much this Perpetual Adoration will man to the entire Congregation Remember Most Reverend Father General that when you signed this project on the 28th of May you said this project will lead us to better and greater things May your words be most prophetic We are going to be in Fatima on the 10th of October When Your Reverence comes to Fatima I will give you $1000 for the expense of your trip I have spoken to my Superior about these alms that I want to give to Your Reverence because I am really overwhelmed by your kindness Your Reverence knows that this is no a bribery but an obligation on my part and that of the benefactors to our highest authority in the Congregation and the direct successor of Saint Anthony Mary Claret

I) Perpetual Adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament

1 As a perennial thanksgiving to God for having made Saint Anthony Mary Claret a living tabernacle of the Most holy Eucharist (When I was praying in the Church of the Rosary in La Granja on the 26th of August at 7 oclock in the evening Our Lord granted me the great grace of retaining the sacramental species Day and night I have the Most holy Sacrament in by breast For this reason I must always be recollected and devoted to Him Who abides so intimately within me Moreover I must pray and fight the evils gaining prevalence in Spain as Our Lord has told me To this end He has brought to my memory many important things all without merit on my part without talent of mine and without respect of persons God has raised me from the lowest class of people to the most elevated position first to the side of earthly kings and now to the side of the King of Heaven Glorificate et portate Deum in corpore vestro I Cor 620 -- Autobiography Chapter XVIII of Part III)

2 Praying for the sanctification and thorough prosperity of our Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Virgin Mary

3 As an atonement and reparation for all the spiritual deficiencies of our Congregation

4 To counteract all the moral evils of the present-day in the world as mentioned following in Section III

II) Perpetual Veneration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Our Blessed Mother the main Patroness of our Claretian Congregation pray incessantly and above all for the increase of filial love in all Claretians towards Her and that our thorough filial consecration to Her be the best means after God and in God for our Sacred Ministry in the salvation of all souls of the entire world

III) Prayer (In the Church of the Rosary in La Granja near Segovia on August 27th during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament which I gave after Mass Our Lord enlightened me in regard to the three evils menacing Spain which are Protestantism -- or rather the decrease of the Catholic spirit -- the Republic and Communism In order to counteract these evils Our Savior made me understand that three devotions had to be intensified namely the Trisagion Ss Trinitatis devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and devotion to the Holy Rosary The Trisagion is to be said daily As for the devotions to the Blessed Sacrament Mass must be heard and Holy Communion received sacramentally and spiritually The three parts of the Rosary should be said every day or at least one part while meditating on the mysteries for each decade and applying the prayers to the needs of the times -- Autobiography Chapter XVIII of Part III)

1 The Trisagion The Trisagion is to be said daily (Autobiography Part III Chapter XVIII) The semi-contemplative Claretians will say it every day at 430 pm imitating our Holy Father Founder who used to recite it at this time every afternoon)

2 Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament This is the primary aim of the Claretian semi-contemplatives by their having Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament (Number 4 of Section I of this Charter fulfills fully this recommendation of Our Divine Savior to Our Holy Father Founder)

3 Devotion to the Holy Rosary The Claretian semi-contemplatives shall recite the three parts of the holy Rosary every day

4 Daily Via Crucis and Via Matris

5 The daily chanting of the Little Office of the Blessed Mother to fulfill the desires of Saint Anthony Mary Claret who wanted the Novices and even the students during their vacations to recite the Little Office for vocations to our Congregation

IV) Mortification as a means for abundant fruit in the Apostolic Ministry of our Claretian Missionaries (On September 4 1859 at 425 am Jesus Christ said to me You have to teach your missionaries mortification in eating and drinking Anthony And a few minutes later the Blessed Mother added Thus they will reap fruit in souls Anthony -- Autobiography Part II Chapter XXV On Mortification)

My dear Brethren in the Immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Mother As we all know will the month of October is particularly consecrated to the Holy Rosary The 7th of October is the feast of the Holy Rosary My sincerest and happiest gratitude to all and each one of your the Claretian Missionary Auxiliaries My repeated recommendation to you about reciting daily the Holy Rosary at home and on Thursdays each one of your to be responsible for having a block Rosary at 730 pm This has been the greatest and holiest achievement in the history of my Claretian Missionary Auxiliaries Now once more I entreat all and each one of you with all my heart to be ever faithful to the daily pious recitation of the Holy Rosary If any of you has been somewhat tepid up to now in fulfilling this my appeal change please your heart into a fervent heart towards Our Blessed Mother who in Her apparitions in Lourdes and in Fatima pleaded with the whole world in Her material way full of mercy and compassion to recite the Holy Rosary as one of the best spiritual remedies on our power against all the moral evils leading countless souls into sin and eternal perdition On the 23rd of July I was taken in an ambulance to St Johns Hospital right after a second heart attack And upon my entrance into the hospital there was the good Chaplain waiting for me to prepare me for death I was so fortunate to received then and there two Sacraments that of Penance and the Sacrament of the Sick (or Extreme Unction) after having celebrated the Holy Mass

in the morning This Sacrament of the Sick worked for my soul and body most wonderfully Besides the spiritual preparation for a happy death it revived my body holding my high blood pressure of 244144 from causing any further damage to my system The doctor Dr Leslie Dornfeld was amazed by my rapid improvement stating that I could have dong the other way But I continually improved And after 18 days in the hospital I was sent back home having had each day the special grace of receiving daily Our Divine Lord in Holy Communion at the hospital The fervent prayers of all and each one of you and of so very many others have been responsible for bringing me back and giving me another new lease on life Needless to say how grateful I am to all of you Much more so because when the doctor released me from the hospital he told me and also to my Superiors that I was going to have a heart condition all my life On my second visit to Dr Dornfeld on August 31st after having been checked by the electrocardiograph my heart was found entirely free from any trace of damage from my two heart attacks Doctor told me that there was no heart condition any more but to continue taking potassium As happy as Dr Dornfeld was then for the unusual success in this case I was a grateful to the Almighty God for granting me this miracle because all the prayers of all of you and many others were answered I must say that I made a special Novena starting the 9th of August finishing the 17th in honor of St Therese of the Infant Jesus And I told her repeatedly My dear Saint the Saint of my dreams since I was a teenager much before you were declared Blessed by Pius XI do obtain for me now that my heart be completely well and I will attribute this miracle to your intercession The powerful intercession of this youthful Saint has been responsible for the perfect healing of my heart I invite all of you that each month from the 9th to the 17th to make a Novena to the Little Flower by reciting 24 times the Glory be to the Father to the Most Holy Trinity in honor of the 24 years that

St Therese lived on earth I pray that your novena for each one of you be as miraculous as it has been for me I wish each one of your and I say it with all my spiritual love for you that is far far greater than any human live that I wish you all every blessing for the sanctification of your immortal souls for your health for the spiritual harmony and peace in your families for the security of your finances and for any other grace that you need And we all need our Good Gods help so much by day and by night

Very Reverend Fr Joao de Freitas Alves CMFSuperior ProvincialPortuguese Province Very Reverend and dear Father Provincial My heartiest greetings in Corde Matris Many thanks for your letter of the 8th of this month Herein I enclose first a photostatic copy of the letter that I wrote to Most Reverend Fr General Anthony Leghisa CMF of September 13th about our project of Perpetual Adoration It explains everything Later on well send you a translation of it in French I am sending you now the names of the ten postulants or aspirants for our semi-contemplative group signed with their own signatures asking Your Reverence to admit them into our Portuguese Province They in this manner ask personally and individually from You Reverend for their admittance into the Portuguese Claretian Province Also I am sending therein the information called Informes in Spanish of each one of these postulants I will bring with me to Fatima all the important papers of these ten candidates who are all wonderful in their own way And they have the best recommendations from their parish priests I know that they are good I will show you their documents and important papers when I be in Fatima After having written this Very Reverend Father I just received now your other letter of September 20th today I am shocked Father To tell you the truth today has been one of the worst days of my whole life because of this letter because you say you are going to take only to of the young men -- Langford and Carpenter Now that everyone here from the Archbishop of Los Angeles up to the last of my 7000 personal friends knows that I

am going to take these ten young men to Fatima and that all is ready and the airplane is all paid and reserved and charted for me and these ten young men how can you stop us And they look forward on the 9th of October to bid me and these young men a cordial farewell at the International Airport of Los Angeles Most probably the Airline Company will sue us if we attempt the impossible of cancelling the charter flight Not only that they would react against the Claretians against the Church and particularly against the Archbishop of Los Angeles whose subject I am With what I have just mentioned briefly Your Reverence with your good judgment will realize that it is socially and morally impossible to hold us back because our plans are too far advanced Very Reverend Father let your Father Minister or Treasurer of your Novitiate keep the perfect account of all the expenses that each one of this group of Americans incurs and I through my benefactors will be so very happy to pay I say this most expressly dear Father because it is my duty to contribute fully to the training of these Americans and I want Your Reverence and your Provincial counselors and the superiors in the Novitiate to be reassured of my thorough financial help I will deposit in Fatima when I come there with the local Fr Minister of Treasurer possibly about $5000 for any unexpected expenses of this group of American postulants Your Province is wonderful but it needs money to support your scholastics novices and postulants And you have many other projects And these Americans will not be in any way a financial burden to your Province We are most willing to pay all debts of these young men -- large and small Please Very Reverend Father do take note of this NO FINANCIAL DIFFICULATIES

As for a teacher for these young men -- dear Very Reverend Father I myself am going with these young men And I have the permission to stay in Fatima And with Your Reverences permission I will be so very happy to be with them as long as it is needed to initiate them to train them to encourage them and educate them into the Claretian life right in your Novitiate in Fatima If Your Reverence wants to know my qualifications not that I want to boast of myself I was Master of Novices for 10 years Rector of the Seminary for six years Prefect and Spiritual Director of the minor and Major Seminaries for eight years Superior of the Provincial House for two terms and Superior and Pastor of Claretian Churches for two terms --- Straight in seminary life and training for 25 years So I will be so happy to be Master of Novices of these young men pro tempore I already have permission to stay until January And I am morally sure that both my Very Reverend Fr Provincial here Fr Bernard OConnor CMF and Father General would lengthen my stay as long as the young men need to learn enough Portuguese to get along with the other Novices We are coming There are only 10 young men as Your Reverence stated you wanted to Langford and Carpenter when they spoke to you in Fatima in August As Your Reverence states in your last letter you will examine them case by case interviewing each one of these young men And I know that Your Reverence will be satisfied with each one If any of them now or later is not fit to continue in your Province or changes his mind his return-trip will be fully paid by me through my benefactors See dear Very Reverend Father our airplane is pre-arranged and schedule just for us and it is all paid by us for our flight to Lisbon You understand dear Very Reverend Father that we cannot stop it now I dont want to contradict you dear Very

1 6 C l a r e t i a n A u x i l i a r i e s Newsletter Very Best Greetings from Fatima The very best greetings from Fatima On the evening of the month of October at 730 we departed from Los Angeles International Airport on our trip to Lisbon and Fatima Though it was an unannounced event I was gratefully surprised to see so very many and most of our very best loyal friends and the families relatives and friends of my ten companions They all were deeply impressed about these ten young man who were showing such a radiant happiness and pursuing Gods call to cross the ocean and dedicate themselves to the thorough service of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Fatima Portugal Likewise my ten companions with myself were so thoroughly grateful for the thoughtfulness of this throng of friends many of whom have been so close to me in the course of over a quarter of a century I thank most cordially Brother Salvatore Azzarello for representing the Claretians on the occasion

After a happy trip with a stopover in Bangor Maine for an hour we arrived safely at midnight of the 10th in Lisbon after having spent about five hours in Gatwick near London where I was able to say the Sunday evening Mass in the Catholic Church of the parish of Horley It was the evening Mass for the parish Just as we walked into the church the Most Blessed Sacrament was being exposed for Benediction My ten companions exclaimed that it was a wonderful for providential coincidence that Jesus was there waiting for them after they had spent about 12 hours in the air and were just preparing to leave from the London airport

for our final destination in Fatima The pastor of Horley knew all about Saint Anthony Mary Claret and was very cordial with us As we arrived in the terminal in Lisbon after midnight we found everyone there very co-operative and the customs officers did not wish to examine our baggage We decided to go immediately to Fatima in taxis We arrived in Fatima at 230 am on the 11th of October Upon our arrival in Fatima we went straight to the Cova da Iria There we recited three parts of the Holy Rosary at the place of the apparitions called the Little Chapel of the Blessed Mother or Capelinha in Portuguese We were alone there in the stillness of the night In front of the Capelinha there were large grills of burning candles on the exact spot where the earth opened and the three children were given the frightful vision of Hell It was very moving for my ten companions and myself to be on the very spot where this vision of Hell took place On the night of the 12th and on the 13th we attended all the ceremonies commemorating the last great apparition of Our Bless Mother at Fatima in October 1917 On the evening of the 12th the statue of the Blessed Mother which Pope Paul VI crowned when he came here in 1967 was placed on the exact spot where She appeared No there is a column there instead of the large oak tree which completely disappeared stolen away piece by piece as relics by the devout people The ceremonies comprised a candlelight process with the Most Blessed Sacrament with over half a million people there praying the entire night on the piazza in front of the Basilica and by the Cova da Iria praying the Holy Rosary Through the influence of the Claretian Fathers of Fatima my ten companions were the ones chosen to carry the Cross and lead the procession and be in the vanguard of the procession vested in cassocks and surplices They were televised and the newspapers commented how ten American young men who had just come to

Fatima from American to join the priesthood were the ones who carried the Cross and ciriales or large lanterns framed in sliver and glass around the Most Bless Sacrament and in front of the statue of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Mother The sublime vocation of these ten young men that of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Perpetual Veneration of the immaculate Heart of Our Blessed Mother was having a wonderful beginning at this historic procession The next morning at the 630 am and 1100 am Masses in the front portico of the Basiclica my ten companions were also the ones chosen to be the altar boys to help in giving Communion to the huge throngs of people that spent the whole night in prayer near the Cova I was also one of the many priests chosen to give Holy Communion I had two of my ten companions helping me with the distribution of Holy Communion I have never distributed so many Communions as in this occasion I was reminded of the 3rd of October in Dominguez Seminary at the Mass for the Rosary Groups wherein I gave about 600 Communions Before and after the 1100 am Mass there was a huge Procession to bring the statue of our Blessed Mother of Fatima from the Little Chapel up to the portico in front of the Basiclica for Mass My ten companions were given the same privilege as the night before They were leading the procession carrying the Cross and silver lanterns in front of the Blessed Mother I was walking with them thanking the Blessed Mother for all Her motherly kindness to all of us especially toward the Claretians and toward my many spiritual friends The Reverend Fr Joquin Maria Alonso the great Claretian theologian for Fatima in talking to the Claretian confrers present commented how fortunate my companions were in going through all this wonderful and holy experience Before the final procession of the Blessed Mother back to the Little Chapel of the Apparitions the Blessed Sacrament was solemnly exposed for Benediction in front

of the Basilica where all the throngs knelt in adoration The Bishop of Leiria Ordinary of Fatima then brought the Monstrance into the right-hand side portico of the Basilica for the individual blessing of the sick The sick attended carefully by nurses and doctors filled the portico and the Bishop assisted by one of my ten companions went to each of these sick persons and blessed them with the Most Blessed Sacrament After the ceremonies the brother of the President of Portugal made a point of speaking with my ten companions He happens to be the main director of the television programming in Portugal My ten companions were televised and later appeared in O Seculo the most important newspaper in Portugal and in the other papers This called most favorably the attention of the Bishop of the Diocese who invited himself to interview these young Americans whom he watched during the processions He came in the afternoon on the 13th to our Novitiate accompanied by the Claretian priest Fr Joaquin Maria Alonso who is considered the greatest Marisn theologian of the present day and is the director of the Ephoemerides Marianae and lives most of the time in Leiria at the residence of the Bishop the Ordinary of Fatima The Bishop was very cordial with us and seems to be very deeply spiritual He showed us two rosaries one with the fifteen mysteries and the other with five that he carries with himself all the time He told us that they were made by Sr Lucia of the Immaculate Heart who is now a cloistered Carmelite in Coimbra The Bishop gave us an inspiring spiritual talk on the message of Our Blessed Mother in Fatima At the same time I saved the oportunity to ask him about this approval of my projects in Fatima He was very happy to give his full and most cordial approval of them This good Bishop in his deepest spirituality was so down to earth He even sang Happy Birthday to one of my companions whose birthday was that day the 13th of October He said that he loved the American and that he was going to go with

200 of them on a pilgrimage for the beatification of the martyr Fr Kolbe My ten companions are on the clouds with all the happiness of these days They have been so well received by the Portugese Claretians that there is a mutual marvelous understanding in their souls though their differences of tongues once in a while makes them feel that they are by the Tower of Babel Then they feel somewhat tempted to call on the Pentecostals of America who claim to have the gift of tongues when in their meetings they reach their hysterical frenzy and being to jabber what they believe to be inspired words Again and again I am most thankful to God and the Blessed Mother Saint Anthony Mary Calret the Little Flower and to complete my litany to all my superior and to my numberless friends who made this project a happy and holy issue My ten companions with me have commended and continue to commend to Our Blessed Mother at Her Cova all the intentions and needs of all and each one of the Claretian Missionary Auxilliaries LAMB our twenty-two Rosary Groups and of all the Claretian benefactors and friends

1 What motivates these young men to leave the United Stated to come to Fatima

These young men wish to become Claretians and be the first members of the prospective project of Perpeual Adoration in Fatima as explained in the attached sheet concerning the four-fold aim of this project A copy of this paper on the four-fold aim of the project has been submitted to Fr Joao de Freitas Alves CMF

2 What are the plans for the future

First of all and above all our group wishes to be Claretian 100 When Father General Anthony Leghisa CMF before putting his signature on my petition of approval of the Claretians of Perpetual Adoration asked me Do you want them to be a separate congregation from the Claretians I readily answered No Fr General I want them to be Claretians and only Claretians but Claretians at their best by living fully the spirit of Saint Anthony Mary Claret and by putting into practice omni cura possibili with all possible care our holy Constitutions and every holy tradition of the Congregation which have been say to say progressively either neglected or entirely forgotten The Most Reverend Fr General stated that he likes this idea of Perpetual Adoration but at the same time he respects the Provincials in each province in this case our Provincial in Portugal He suggested that I should confer with the incumbent Portugese Provincial Fr Joao de Freitas Alves CMF and see what we might arrange in regard to our plans for the future and

these plans once agree upon as a bitlateral contract be submitted to Fr General for his final permission Let it be clear to all that we wish to be a part of this Portugese Province and therefore submitted to the authority of the Portugese Provincial but with certain autonomy because of our semi-contemplative way of life of Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Perpetual Veneration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary We request that this autonomy be consistent and perpetual and that the agreements made now between Fr Joao de Freitas Alves CMF and Fr Aloysius Ellacuria CMF be respected by every forthcoming Protugese Provincial along the years As we say in English Beggars are not choosers But first it is my wish that these Claretians of Perpetual Adoration may have eventually in Fatima their own house and grounds built at no expense to the Province with money coming from outside of Portugal I like to purchase immediately the grounds for this building since prices are constantly going up in Fatima more than anywhere else in the world As stated these grounds will be purchased by donations given to me by Claretian benefactors in the United States Second that their superior should be elected secretly by all the members of the group with a majority of the votes (at least by 23) and either confirmed or rejected by the Provincial Superior and his government But if the election is rejected by Fr Provincial and his government Fr General should be completely informed both by the Provincial and his government and by each member of the Claretians of Perpetual Adoration and let the Fr General decide Very Reverend Fr Provincial after counsulting the Superior and the two consultors of these members of our group of Perpetual Adoration you can count on some of our members for the needs of the Province stating where and for how long they are

going to be away but once their mission is fulfilled they must come back to their monastery2 How did you come in contact with them

These young men and quite a few others with the same ideals came to me on their own accord for spiritual direction Since I was their spiritual director I detected in them their religious vocation Not an ordinary vocation like the other seminarians in the United Sates They wanted more and deeper spiritual life and they didnt want any worldliness and the easy life of the seminaries now throughout the United States both in the diocesan and religious seminaries I detected their souls to be generous with God and most willing to to Gods Holy Will as thoroughly as possible They wish to be priests and missionaires to save souls They love the contemplative life but not in the way it is practiced by the Trappists Camaldoli and the Carthusians I told them I was going to find the right place for them but I needed imporant permissions beforehand First of all the permision of Fr General which I obtained on May 28th of this year Fr General Anthony Leghisa CMF in answer to my written petition signed the approval by adding

I had been planning since last October exactly a year ago to establish a group of semi-contemplatives being Claretians at the same time that would devote themselves to fulfilling a four-fold aim as described thoroughly in Question 1 with the attached papers that are a photostatic copy of the original sent already to the Very Reverend Fr Provincial of Portugal signed in September 21st of this year On November 2nd 1970 I was a guest at the Claretian Residence at Cologio Pio XII in Lisbon on my return from the Claretian American Pilgrimage to Fontfroide France I met the

Very Reverend Fr Provincial Joao de Freitas Alves CMF I immediately detected in him to be a very spiritual man with very well-balanced judgement and humble and approachable So I felt at ease with him after he himself served my Mass I explained to Very Reverend Fr de Freitas Alves my spiritual ambitions of having in Fatima a Claretian community for Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Perpetual Veneration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a memorial for the 100th anniversary of the Holy death of Saint Anthony Mary Claret in Fontfroide on the 24th of October in 1870 In Fontfroide as director of the Claretian American pilgrimage I was priviliged to offer the Holy Mass and to have the consecration of the Sacred Species at 845 AM of October 24th which was the exact moment he passed away 100 years before in that historic and holy monastery I offered this new project to Saint Anthony Mary Claret in that moment The pilgrims accompanying me from America were the only ones present at this Holy Mass besides the actual owners of that holy monastery who are Catholics and went to Holy Communion at that Mass I explained to Fr de Freitas on the memorable evening of November 2nd how Saint Anthony Mary Claret wished that somewhere in the Congregation of his Missionaries there should be Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Scarament day and night and how I considered that Fatima would be the best suited for this Why in Fatima Because the entire message of Fatima is a Claretian Charisma and I should say the complete Claretian Charisma As I stated in a letter to Fr General on the 13th of September

I thought that the best place for this should be Fatima for several reasons

1) It was the Angel of Portugal in 1916 who brought to Lucia Jacinta and Francisco to adore and receive under both species the Most Blessed Sacrament

2) Because Fatima since 1917 has been and is considered the holiest place in the world

3) Because our dear Father Founder Saint Anthony Mary Claret hs been promoted by the Bishop of Leiria Ordinary of Fatima to be the patron and generalissimo-in-chief of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima that counts over 20000000 people all over the world And Fatima is the international headquarters of this holy organization And it is noteworthy that

4) Saint Anthony Mary Claret was proclaimed by His Holiness Pius XII the Forerunner of Fatima In January 1971 I published an article in Soul Magazine stated twelve reasons why Saint Anthony Mary Claret is a perfect prophet and forerunner of Faitma and of its entire message

3) What are they human and cultural abilities of these young men

4) Are there other young men with the same ideals waiting to come to Fatima

Yes there are quite a few well qualified young men that are ready to come in the near future with true aspirations for real holiness I will bring as many as I am permitted to bring I hope that the superiors here dont place any limitations in regard to numbers as they did this year

5) What are your impressions of Fatima

Fatima is the best place on earth after the Vatican City Haec est Nova Jerusalem at Porta Coeli (Here is the New Jerusalem and the Gate of Heaven) It is by far the best Marian center in the world where the Claretian Charisma finds its perfect fulfillment

6) What do you think of the present crisis of the Church

The present crisis in the Church is a result of a lack of proper spiritual formation in the seminaries and because of that priests today are not as they should be This crisis is going to be much worse because in the present day the seminaries instead of being improved are completely deteriorated and the ones in charge of sacerdotal formation sad to say but it is a fact are the instruments of deformation of the future priests The priest by virtue of his vocation in the expression of St John Eudes is called to the highest dignity on earth and therefore to the highest sanctity This great Saint and great director of semianries in his day used to state this maxim many many times to the seminarians and priests in his conferences or spiritual retreats I stated that the crisis is going to be much worse because since the Council of Trent the seminaries have never been so corrupted as in the present-day Pardon my expression but this happens to be true In most of the seminaries they have a disastrous misinterpretation of Vatican II and I state this with all my conviction after spending twenty-five years or more in the spiritual formation of seminarians As a house to weather the storms should have solid foundations and then properly built on them likewise the seminarians as future priests should have a thorough and deep foundation in the purgative life which most of them dont have and then led into the illuminative life by the

most expert and holy spiritual directors of the diocese or congregation and by the time of their ordination they should be entering fully the unitive life because the priest is another Christ and should be one with Christ not only in name but in deed

I am deeply impressed by the Portuguese by their deep faith great simplicity much goodness and special love for the Blessed Mother They are hardy and able to withstand much privation They are tremendously thrifty transforming rocks into bread To show you that the Portuguese and Basques had good mutual understanding in the Gold Era of the Iberian Peninsula we have the example of Magellan and Don Juan de Elcano In the Golden Age of Exploration of the Unknown Lands though much fewer in numbers than their neighbors the Spaniards the Portuguese were their toughest competitors keeping up with them in so may ways so that Alexander VI had to intervene to make the proper demarcation between Portuguese and Spanish territories Magellan and Don Juan Sebatian de Elcano were the greatest seafarers at that time The trip around the world planned by both of them because of the premature death of Magellan who was killed by the natives in the Philippines was continued and successfully finished by Don Juan Sebastian de Elcano who was given by the Catholic kings of Spain a globe of the world with the inscription around it

21 Staying in Fatima Until This Urgent Matter is Settled

Extending to you my best wishes for a blessed Christmas heavily laden with every grace from Heaven and for a happy healthy and holy New Year In my last letter to you I was telling you that I have found a perfect convent for the Sisters the Daughters of Saint Anthony Mary Claret The lady who owns this convent is very good to us and is favoring us above other buyers some of whom have ready cash However this good lady has great debts of her own and she needs $4000000 before the end of January to pay for her hospital bills and for her new house If we are unable to produce this much money she will ldquoswerverdquo to the other buyers who can meet these terms If you could send $2000000 instead of $1000000 this would help so much and would be half of the necessary amount to secure the convent If I lose this convent the order will be lost This request means more to me than any other time The Bishop of this Diocese has given his permission most willingly for the Sisters to come here at the beginning of July I hope that this may take place In the meantime the problem is money Please do all you can to help purchase this convent because at this point we could lose all hope of ever having the order start over here in Fatima if we lose this wonderful convent There are no other convents comparable to this one in quality and in price Also it is very near to the Basilica The name of the Sisters Daughters of Saint Anthony Mary Claret is already chartered in the United States for tax-deduction purposes Checks

Fr Kevin Pius Manion a Catholic priest was personal secretary of Fr Aloysius Ellacuria CMF In August 1971 and before he entered the seminary Manion was sent by Fr Aloysius along with two other young men Joseph Langford and Charles Carpenter to Portugal to make the preliminary arrangements for the newly formed Claretian Missionaries of Perpetual Adoration

Fr Manion became Fr Aloysius close collaborator and personal secretary after Fathers return to Los Angeles California from Fatima in August of 1973 He accompanied Father Aloysius until his death on April 6 1981 Fr Kevin Pius Manion was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Guadalajara Mexico and he is currently ministering in the Diocese of San Diego He maintains the Fr Aloysius Archive and he is working on the cause of sainthood for Fr Aloysius
