PILGRIMAGE TO ST. COLMCILLE'S WELL for Ecumenical Service

On National Pilgrimage Day (May 21) parishioners from Knocklyon, Ballyboden, Ballycragh, Bohernabreena, Firhouse, Tallaght, Templeogue and Whitechurch and Augustinians from Orlagh Retreat Centre made their way to St. Colmcille's Well, Ballycullen Road. Pilgrims from Knocklyon assem-bled in St. Colmcille's Church and after saying a few prayers led by Fr. Philip, set out on foot. On Ballycullen Road they were joined by a contingent from Firhouse. By 3 o'clock a large congregation had gathered at St. Colmcille's Well for an Ecumenical Service of Worship presided over by Fr. Kieran O'Mahony, O.S.A. After the opening prayers and litany Bernadette Toal (Ballyboden) read a passage from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. A person-al reflection was then very effectively delivered by Rev. R. H. Deverell from St. Maelruan's Church of Ireland, Tallaght. The intercessions were made by pil-grims from the various parishes including Ann O'Connell from Knocklyon. An oak tree was blessed by Fr. Kieran O'Mahony and it was later planted at the well to mark Jubilee 2000. The Lord's Prayer, the Prayer of St. Colmcille and a Prayer for Ireland were then said, followed by the Blessing and the closing hymn.

A short drama based on episodes in the life of St. Colmcille and finishing with a poem by Dubhghlas de

hide was presented by pupils from Eva Coffey's School of Speech and Drama. A group of local musi-cians and dancers then entertained the pilgrims in the afternoon sunshine.

Participants in the pilgrimage included the Augustinian Provincial, Dr. Desmond Foley, as well as Fr. Kieran O'Mahony, Fr. John Byrne and Br. Columba Higgins of the Orlagh Retreat Centre; Fr. Hugh Kavanagh, C.C., Ballycragh; Fr. John Lawless, P.P., Bohernabreena; Fr. Colm Matthews, P.P., Firhouse; and Fr. Gay Colleran, P.P., Templeogue.

KNOCKLYON ' W VARIETY GROUP W Well done to the "guys" and "dolls" of the K.V.G. who did themselves proud during their recent run of this lovely musical at the Civic Theatre, Tallaght. Among the familiar faces were Joanne Kelly, Idrone, in the role of Sarah Brown and Sheila Giles, Knocklyon Avenue, as Miss Adelaide.

Joanne's performance was played with ease and confi-dence, and no doubt we will see and hear more of this young lady in the musical world. Sheila convinced the audi-ence of her position as the "tired fiance" of fourteen years. It is easy to see why Sheila has been nominated as "Best Comedienne" by AIMS. As always, Barbara Gallagher dis-played endless energy and style during the dance routines. Teresa Hogan, one of the most enthusiastic members of the Group played a member of "The Mission Band". Other Knocklyon members of the cast included Leona McEvoy, Annie Sparrow, Jackie Lee, Susan Stafford and Jessica Byrne.

Great credit must go to the Director, Eamon Glancy, Musical Director, Colin Sloan and Choreographer Anne Mclntyre. Anne is no stranger to Knocklyon as she grew up in Knockaire. Her career as a dancer began ten years ago, she has represented Ireland in World Championships, and is currently rated No. 8 in the world.

With talent like this, Knocklyon Variety Group should go from strength to strength, and we congratulate them on their 10th Birthday. Watch this space for news of future pro-ductions.

KNOCKLYON VARIETY GROUP The Commi t tee and m e m b e r s of K.V.G. w o u l d l ike to express their t hanks to all w h o helped make thei r recent show, " G u y s And Dol ls " s u c h a success .

A specia l thank y o u to ou r pat rons, the adver t isers in ou r p rog ramme and to our aud iences on each of the f ive n ights .

The Group wi l l take a rest fo r the s u m m e r and hopefu l ly resume meet ings in the Jun io r Schoo l in September.

For detai ls r ing 494 1021 (Teresa).

KNOCKLYON UNITED U12 DOUBLE WINNERS

Back row, left to right: Cathal Wilson, Kevin Hannigan, Sean Darker, David Young, Graham Jones, Kieran Smyth, Mark Rooney, Peter Warren, Ryan O'Sullivan, Paul Boyle, Garvan McEvoy. Front row: Adam Doran, Ruairi Dunne, Keith Nugent, Brian Kane, Emmet Brien, Howard Hardy, Morgan Kerr.

Knocklyon United and Blessington F.C. had a hard fought first half in Kilternan on Sunday, May 28th, in the League Cup Final. Despite pressure from both teams the game was scoreless at half-time.

In the second half, Captain Brian Kane scored Knocklyon's first goal with a 25 yard strike. Knocklyon continued to keep the pressure on the Blessington defence and were rewarded with a second goal f rom Keith Nugent. Blessington came back and scored a goal f rom a free kick, but Knocklyon responded with two more goals f rom Keith Nugent to complete his hat trick.

Final score, Knocklyon 4, Blessington l. Well done to Knocklyon U l 2 ' s for a great season, they had already won the League scoring over 100 goals!

Thanks to the Managers, Paul Warren, A. J. Jones and Hugh McEvoy for leading us to victory.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Our Northern Friends CAMOGIE NEWS On the 31st of May our Northern penpals paid their annual visit to Dublin, accompan ied by Mr. P. Wright, Mr. D. Mathison, Ms. H. De W y n n e and Ms. M. McCartney. The exci tement was palpable as our 42 young visitors entered the school hall, where the 5th Class s tudents f rom Rooms 11 and 12 had a magni f icent recept ion pre-pared for them.

Having renewed old acquaintances, sixty of us set off for The National Art Gallery, where we were given a guid-ed tour of eight pictures. T h e chi ldren marvel led at the foresight of the artist Jan Steen in his depict ion of T h e Vil lage School ' , 1665, and were of course awe-st ruck by the power of T h e Taking of Christ ' by Carravaggio, 1602. We had a picnic in Merr ion Square Park and spent the af ternoon explor ing The Viking Centre.

The Northern Ireland chi ldren then returned to their host famil ies in Knocklyon for the rest of the evening. This is our third year l iaising wi th the North and tales of the hospital i ty on both sides of the border are now leg-endary.

June 1st was spent with the chi ldren at tending art and craft c lasses given generously by Ms. O'Sul l ivan (R9), and Ms. Roche (R10), Mrs. Murphy (R12) and Mr. McGovern (R5), took charge of the sport ing activit ies.

The highlight of the trip was, of course, the concert in the schoo l hal l . O u r t rad i t iona l b a n d p e r f o r m e d admirably under the gu idance of Ms. Woods . Our school choir was nothing short of heavenly under the baton of Mr. Gearty. Pupils f rom R10 and R12 gave a wonderfu l exhibit ion of Irish dancing (see photo on page 14). Mr. Gearty on piano and his son Cathal on violin per formed T h e Derry Air ' . The Holywood pupils s taged a magnif i-cent pageant on Irish history dat ing f rom the famine to modern t imes.

Dur ing lunch in the lona Centre Mr. P. Wright present-ed a paint ing by the renowned Northern artist Tom Kerr to the school (see photo on page 14). Teachers avai led of the chance to swop thoughts and ideas on curr icular changes in the educat ional system. Fr. Weakl iam, our Parish Priest, cal led in to the lona Centre to we lcome our Northern fr iends.

Our thanks to the office staff and FAS workers for mak-ing the visit such an enjoyable one.

Mr. P. O'Nei l l and Mr. P. Wright made the final speech-es of farewell , each express ing their del ight in the worth-whi le nature of the visit. The trip was funded by a grant f rom Leargas.

- Ms. C. Murphy, Ms. H. McCann, Mrs. E. Broderick, Organising Committee

A jubilant scene after the victory.

The Senior Camogie team had a great victory over local rival Bishop Galvin on May 17th at Parnell Park by 5-3 to 0-1. We had a massive turnout of supporters and a great day was had by all. The result secured a unique Division One Girls Football and Camogie double. Well done girls!

Rang 3 Camogie has got off to a wonderful start in Third Class with lots of talent and enthusiasm. This will be displayed when they shortly play their first challenge match of the year. Go n-eiri an t-adh leo.

Rang 4 We had a great display of skill from these girls when they played their first challenge match against Kilternan recently. Everyone gave it their best and we look forward to the next game.

Write-A-Book Project The focus on the teaching of wr i t ing in The Revised Primary Curr iculum is now on the process of wr i t ing itself. The kernel of wr i t ing is having something to share and want ing to structure it for a reader to understand and appreciate. This can be emotionally demanding and certainly involves hard work. In keeping abreast of new ideas many teachers and children have been making their pens dance in meaningful and purposeful ways as in T h e Wr i te : A-Book ' Project. A number of chi ldren f rom 3rd Class were highly commended for their books in the recent Wri te-A-Book Project organised through the Blackrock Education Centre.

Keith Gillis wrote about T h e Day Everything Went Wrong ' , Laura Murphy wrote about 'Jewel' and Ronan O'Reilly's book was about T h e Russian Bomb'.

Children like an audience so please share in the process of wr i t ing by reading, showing inter-est and appreciation of your child's piece of wr i t -ing. Feel free to browse through the many dis-play boards of children's writing and art exhib-ited throughout the school.

Third Class pupil Coleen Daly from Orlagh Grove who received a special merit award for

her book 'The Mystery Of The Magic Horse' at the recent prize-giving ceremony.

No sooner was the new pedestrian bridge over the M50 opened than local vandals immediately applied ugly grafitti on its exposed surfaces, including supporting piers, the tall A-frame and on the pathway itself.

Some of the vandals daubed their own 'logos' which have appeared elsewhere in Knocklyon. The disgusting language which this grafitti sometimes includes is also most offensive.

The grafitti is not the only way the new bridge has been vandalised. The semi-circular wire enclosure, necessary in the interests of safety, has also been damanged. If at any stage the vandals succeed in their efforts to breach it, this could have very serious consequences.

Evidence of vandalism can also be seen in other parts of Knocklyon. The quality of our environment is being impaired by litter, grafitti, breaking down of young trees, etc.

It is sometimes claimed that the youth of today are more concerned about the environment than their prede-cessors. Youth who are genuinely concerned about the quality of the environment should endeavour to influence those of their contemporaries who obviously are not.

Parents too should ensure that their children are not involved in acts of vandalism or adding to the litter which is strewen around in various parts of our neighbourhood.

- Name and address with Editor

We publish below extracts from a letter to Senator Ann Ormonde M.C.C. from Mr. John O'Donoghue ID. (Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform) fol-lowing representations by her on behalf of Coolamber, Cremorne, Idrone and other Knocklyon residents. "I arranged to have the matter brought to the attention of the Garda authorities as this is an operational matter for the Garda Siochana. I now wish to set out the general position with regard to current legislation and recent initiatives to tackle the problems arising from underage and late night drinking. The Gardai have extensive powers under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 and the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988 to deal with late night drinking and disturbances. For instance, it is an offence under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act for a person to engage in unreasonable behaviour likely to cause seri-ous offence or annoyance between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. or at any other time, having been requested by a member of the Garda Siochana to desist. Under the Act, the Gardai also have the power to seize intoxicating liquor (or other substance) from persons they suspect are committing an offence under the Act. The provisions of the act are also being utilised to seize alcohol from young people and to arrest those whose behaviour merits such a r e s p o n s e — . . . The Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988 (Age Card) Regulations 1999 provide for a voluntary national age card scheme whereby any person who has attained 18 years of age may apply for an age card at his/her local Garda Station in order to confirm that they have attained the legal age for the purchase of intoxicating l iquor . . . .

. . . I am confident that the introduction of a national age card will make a signif-icant contribution to the continuing fight against underage d r i n k i n g — . . . The incidence of underage drinking throughout the country is a major cause of concern to parents of teenagers. For the first time ever (because of the Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2000) it will be an offence of strict liability i.e. no defence is acceptable, to sell alcohol to minors. The Garda authorities, as well as parent groups and youth organisations had sought this tough provision and its enact-ment into law will be followed by the most extensive and determined crackdown on the sale of alcohol to minors in all areas of the S t a t e — . . . Dealing with the underage drinking problem should not be seen as the province of State agencies alone - parents, the drink industry and the media too, must also play their part in helping to address the problem."

-John O'Donoghue, T.D.

SUPERQUINN STAFF CHANGES

—Reflection — FUNERAL INSPIRATION!

CULTURAL EXCHANGES! Let the Dance Begin!

One of the great sources of inspiration in a priest's life is the frequent contact it brings with bereaved families at funeral time. When gathered with family members to prepare the funeral liturgy, you often hear spontaneous and heartfelt words like "he never complained", "I couldn't have had a better mother", "his family was everything to him", "she'd do anything for anybody". Wouldn't all of us love to feel that, at the end of our lives, we might be deserving of such sentiments, whether spoken or unspoken wouldn't matter!

One of the most eloquent tributes to the good-ness and quality of life of an elderly person has got to be the sight of grandchildren, especially those who are teenage or adult, in tears, at their funeral. The evident grief of the young speaks loudly of a grandparent who was a gift to them; a friend, perhaps; a guide; a confidant; one who always understood!

Truly, those who have quality of life and love to share, never stop giving. Even in and beyond death!

A GIFT OF ART

We send our best wishes to Damien Thompson, the pop-ular manager at Knocklyon for the past seven years, who is now employed on a new project with Superquinn. We welcome new manager Derek McDonnell and hope his stay in Knocklyon will be a pleasant one.

We say goodbye too, to Paul Dunne (assistant manag-er) who is taking up the position of manager at Blackrock, and David Murphy who will leave us in July when he moves to Blanchardstown as assistant manager. Congrats lads.

No doubt the new management team will continue to supply the personal service provided by their predeces-sors.
