"The Eucharist

is the

sacrament of

love:

it signifies

love,

it produces

love.”

- St Thomas Aquinas

From the Pastor’s Desk

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you so much for last Sunday’s farewell reception! I was quite overwhelmed by the number of people that took time to enjoy some food and talk with me (especially given that it was Father’s Day). I wish I had more time to speak with each of you and more of you could be present, but as was mentioned many times over the course of the day, I will not be far in my new assignment in LeSueur, so I still hope to see you from time to time. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and for the opportunity to grow as a man and as a priest! I will continue to hold your families in my prayers.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It’s the primary feast set aside each year specifically focusing on the Eucharist. The story is familiar: On the night before He died, Jesus celebrated a final meal with His apostles. During the meal, He took the bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is My Body, which will be given up for you.” Then He took the chalice, said the blessing and gave it to them, saying, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of My Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me” (quotes taken from the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass, cf. Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20).

These are the words we hear at every Mass at the consecration, which signals the moment the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. At this moment Jesus is truly present to us. Not in a symbolic way, but in a real way. What the priest holds in his hands—what appears to be bread and wine on the surface—is the same Jesus that shared the Last Supper with His disciples 2000 years ago. It’s the same Jesus who suffered and died on the Cross. It’s the same Jesus who rose from the dead. And He waits to give Himself to us at Communion. After Mass, the consecrated hosts are placed in the tabernacle, where He waits in humble silence for us to come before Him in prayer. Sometimes this takes place in Eucharistic Adoration, where a host is exposed in a golden monstrance, and the adorer can pray before Jesus present there (all are welcome to visit our Eucharistic Adoration chapel, which is open for 48 hours every week from Tuesday 9:00 AM to Thursday 9:00 AM).

There is a traditional Latin hymn known as “Ave verum corpus”, which honors the Eucharist as the true Body and Blood of Jesus. Here is the Latin text, along with its English translation:

Ave verum corpus, natus / de Maria Virgine, / vere passum, immolatum / in cruce pro homine / cuius latus perforatum / fluxit aqua et sanguine: / esto nobis praegustatum / in mortis examine. / O Iesu dulcis, O Iesu pie, / O Iesu, fili Mariae. / Miserere mei. Amen.

Hail, true Body, born / of the Virgin Mary, / who have truly suffered, was sacrificed / on the cross for mankind, / whose pierced side / flowed with water and blood: / May it be for us a foretaste / in the trial of death. / O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, / O Jesus, son of Mary, / have mercy on me. Amen.

The original poem is attributed to Pope Innocent VI in the 14th century and has been set to music by various composers throughout the centuries, perhaps most famously by Mozart. “Ave verum corpus” is a meditation on the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and makes the connection between His Body and Blood and the Catholic belief in the redemptive qualities of suffering that were exemplified by Jesus upon the Cross. May this short poem be a prayer that helps us to enter more deeply into the reality of the Eucharist. And may it inspire within us a deeper love and desire for our Eucharistic Lord on this Feast of His Most Holy Body and Blood.

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]
