Contacts: Michael 0419 696 138, Bob 0419 268 618, Lou 0418 406 023 Almost every week, I am privileged to be able to visit our two parish schools. This year Bethany College has organised for me to hear Confession and celebrate Holy Mass at the College Chapel 2-3 times per term. Last Wednesday was the first time we did this and I believe it was as profitable for me as it was for the young people who attended. I also visit- ed the year 3 students at St Mary Star of the Sea and the year 4 students received the Sacra- ment of Reconciliation. On Ash Wednesday, I invite everyone to accept the ashes on their forehead as a visible sign of sorrow for sins committed as well as penance. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches used at the Palm Sunday Mass last year. This day marks the beginning of Lent which is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting. Lent prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the two days in the year when the faithful are asked to fast or abstain from meat. Our parish welcomes Fr Piotr who is conducting our parish retreat this weekend. We are grateful for the opportunity to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the Divine Mercy of God and also of his holy angels. Gods blessings on you and your family. First Reading Sir 27:4-7 In a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind, so too the defects of a man appear in his talk. The kiln tests the work of the pot-ter, the test of a man is in his conversation. The orchard where the tree grows is judged on the quality of its fruit, similarly a man’s words betray what he feels. Do not praise a man before he has spoken, since this is the test of men.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 91:2-3. 13-16. R. See v.2 Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night.

The just will flourish like the palm-tree and grow like a Leba-non cedar.

Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is no wrong.

Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.

Second Reading 1 Cor 15:54-58 When this perishable nature has put on imperishability, and when this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of scripture will come true: Death is swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Now the sting of death is sin, and sin gets its power from the Law. So let us thank God for giving us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Never give in then, my dear brothers, never admit defeat; keep on working at the Lord’s work always, knowing that, in the Lord, you cannot be labouring in vain.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Shine on the world like bright stars; you are offering it the word of life. Alleluia!

Gospel Lk 6:39-45

Jesus told a parable to his disciples, ‘Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? The disciple is not superior to his teacher; the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye. There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. For every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from brambles. A good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart; a bad man draws what is bad from the store of bad-ness. For a man’s words flow out of what fills his heart.’

Our speech pattern reflect our interior state, our words betray what fill our

hearts. The writer of Ecclesiasticus, as well as the author of Luke’s Gospel,

are well aware of the power of speech and one’s responsibility to use it

wisely, compassionately, in the service of God. What makes for holy

speech? Confidence in the risen Lord. Also gratitude, perspective and pa-

tience. Patience for the imperfections of others, while attending to the plank

in my eye, prevents hypocrisy and fosters life-giving relationships. Today I

could consider my own speech pattern, asking the Lord to heal my heart and

align my speech with the Word of life. God’s Word 2019 Daily Reflections

Parish Safeguarding and Child Protection “The emotional, physical and spiritual safety, well-being and

dignity of children is an integral part of the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. The Archdiocese of Sydney is

wholly committed to ensuring the safety, well-being and dignity of all children, and acknowledges its important legal,

moral and spiritual responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment for those children.”

The following are safeguarding strategies that the Archdio-cese wants implemented. They apply to all people working in any capacity (paid or volunteer) in all parishes including St Michael’s:

1) Working with Children Check renewed every 5 years and submitted to the parish office.

2) Filling in and submitting the Volunteer Registration-Acceptance Form (with name, contact details and all tasks/roles volunteered for). This may need to be updated from time to time to reflect the changes in the roles undertaken by the volunteer.

3) Reading and signing (which indicates compliance with) the Code of Conduct for Working with Children (a 5-page document that you keep, returning only the signed final page to the parish office).

4) Completing the online Safeguarding Induction Training (see below).

All volunteers must comply with the safeguarding strategies to be able to continue in their good work for the parish.

All forms may be picked up from the parish office or at the back of the Church after Mass.

If you need help with any of the above, contact Valerie at the parish office on Wednesdays between 10 am-12 pm and on Sundays between 11 am -12 pm.

Our gratitude to all volunteers who are the life blood of this parish.
