Dear Friends, “I’m not religious, but I am very spiritual.” It’s a frequent refrain that’s heard nowadays. Institutional religion just doesn’t seem to have the appeal that it had in the middle years of the 20 th century and before. People don’t want to be held down to the rules and expectations that organized faiths have. As I mentioned in the bulletin a couple of weeks ago, the proportion of these “nones”, i.e. those with no religious affiliation, is at 20% of the general population in country. Another figure that’s also disturbing is that while Catholics form the largest religious body in the country, the second largest group is made up of former Catholics. In the midst of this change, the Catholic Church celebrates this weekend Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church. These challenging figures are asking us about the meaning of belonging to the Church. If many are leaving and others are wondering what the point of a church is, then they raise a basic question: why be a Catholic? Dorothy Day, one of the founders of the Catholic Worker movement in the midst of the Great Depression, once said that the thing that attracted her to the Church was that Catholicism never closed its doors to anyone. It didn’t matter if you were rich or poor, what your ethnicity or race was, if you were a new immigrant or from a family that was in the country for generations. All worshipped the Lord together in the same space. As the columnist, Jimmy Breslin, once remarked: “When you say ‘Catholic, you’re really saying ‘Here comes everybody!’” Day and Breslin answered the question by citing the universal quality behind the word “Catholic.” This goes back to something Jesus started doing when he first began his public ministry. He gathered disciples around him from all walks of life. From the beginning, he called fishermen, tax collectors, religious conservatives and zealots, political radicals, working class people and middle class. He called women, sinners, Gentiles and Jews to listen to him and follow him. Those first followers found in him a closeness to God that they had never experienced before. The differences between themselves and others paled in comparison to this shared experience. As the Spirit’s presence at the Pentecost recalls, the heart of the Church is our mission to follow this same Jesus. He still is revealing that our shared communion with God is in the midst of our diversity. Each generation since the first group of disciples has been challenged by the same thing: draw close to Christ and you’ll be close to God and he’ll change how you look at others. Sometimes we’re good at responding to this call and sometimes we’re not so good. This is why the Eucharist is the central act of the Church. In each celebration, Christ does what only he can do: he brings us closer to God in a way that no one else can. We don’t just worship God at Mass. We experience him in the midst of the differences we all feel. This diversity becomes relative, however, when we consider what Christ does for us. He shows us what matters our shared Communion with him and how that sharing can change how we relate to the different people around us. At its best (and I grant that it isn’t always at its best) this institution goes against the tendency of any society, group, or person to think of itself as superior to others. The Church is crucial for our lives because it gives us an experience of God you can’t get on your own. It’s the experience that Jesus gives us, who gave his life for all, even those who killed him! It challenges us never to give up on how we can improve how we relate to those with whom we differ. After all, if Christ is calling us to be together with him, in spite of our differences, who are we to say that we’re better than anyone else? Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends, “I’m not religious, but I am very spiritual.” It’s a frequent refrain that’s heard nowadays. Institutional religion just doesn’t seem to have the appeal that it had in the middle years of the 20th century and before. As the columnist, Jimmy Breslin, once remarked: “When you say ‘Catholic’, you’re really saying ‘Here comes everybody!’”

Day and Breslin answered the question by citing the universal quality behind the word “Catholic.” This goes back to something Jesus started doing when he first began his public ministry. He shows us what matters – our shared Communion with him and how that sharing can change how we relate to the different people around us. ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION If you know

someone who is considering having an abortion, here is a number that they might call that could be of help to them to consider an alternative to this practice. The number is 1-800-395-HELP (4357). STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

June 8, 2014—Pentecost Sunday

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7

To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and let Him in! Open your heart and be grateful for all the gifts God has given us. Regardless of your circumstance, God has given us all blessings. What we do with those gifts will determine our eternal fate. Generously sharing your gifts with those that are less fortunate certainly puts us on the path to Heaven.

As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame; As tumbled over rim in roundy wells Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name; Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: Deals out that being indoors each one dwells; Selves — goes itself; myself it speaks and spells, Crying Whát I dó is me: for that I came.

We are grateful to the 1,545 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $13,082.00 in the offertory and $2,368.50 through Online Giving offertory, which along

with other fees and donations, totaled $19,980.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you

should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly

appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The

energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot

them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already

been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org
