Which of the two did what the father wanted? Dear Family in Christ, Today, we contemplate the father and owner of the vineyard asking his two sons: "Son, go to work in the vineyard today." (Mt 21:29). One of them says "yes", and does not go. The other says "no", and goes. Neither of them keeps their word. Surely, who says “yes” but remains home is not trying to fool his father. Maybe he is just lazy, not only to work but also to think. His motto: “What do I care for what I said yesterday?” But the one who initially said “no” certainly cares for what he said yesterday. He regrets his rebuff to his father. A twinge of conscience may give us the courage to rectify. He corrects the false word with a precise deed, the correct fact. Everybody makes mistakes “To err is human.” Yes, but even more human, and more in agreement with the inner truth inside us, is to rectify. Nonetheless, this is difficult, for it means to humiliate ourselves, to smash our arrogance and our vanity. Sometimes, we may have lived moments like these: correcting a hasty decision, a rash judgment, an unfair analysis... Then, a sigh of relief: "Thank you, Lord!” “Truly, I say to you: the publicans and the prostitutes are ahead of you on the way to the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 21:31). St. John Chrysostom enhances the psychological mastery of our Lord before these “chief priests”: “He does not reproach anything directly to them: ‘Why did you not believe, John? “ but He rather prefers to confront them —which is much more biting, indeed— with the publicans and the prostitutes. And so, with the obvious force of the facts, He reprimands them for the malevolence of a behavior emphasized by human prejudice and conceit.. And, while we are at it, already on the scene, we might perhaps miss the presence of a third son, the one who likes to beat around the bush, given to half measures, and in whose mood it would be easier for us to recognize ourselves and ask for forgiveness, ashamed. So, with the Lord's permission, we invent him and we hear him answer his father, with a faint voice: ‘Perhaps I will, perhaps I won't; maybe yes, maybe no…’ While, someone even claims having heard him finally adding: ‘The most probable is that, well, perhaps, who knows… Sometimes indecision and laziness make us sin with omission, that is, of not doing what we feel we should have done. I remember that when my parents looked the most disappointed in me was when I promised to do something and I did not achieve it, but not for the sole fact that I did not comply, but because I did not try. In my country we often say this phrase: "The road that leads to hell is paved with good intentions." It seems that we build roads saying yes to everything, being willing at least in words, but when we do not act with works; our path leads us to nothing. In difficult times, like the ones we are living now, many children of God are needed, responding to the needs of humanity, proving with actions that they are capable of loving, serving, accompanying, forgiving, etc. Good children of God who with deeds respond to the call to work for his vineyard. In this community of St Teresa of Avila, we have many responding with love to the invitation of our God. May he grant us to continue bearing witness in the world with deeds rather than words, going and sharing God's love with others.

Your priest in Christ, Fr. Eduardo

    EDUCATION PROGRAM

Registration is now open for Religious Education for the 2020-2021 year.

There is an exciting change to RE this year as our parish shifts from classroom Faith Formation to Online Family Catechesis. We will be using a new Online Program called Pathways! The Program, along with the Director of Religious Education, will provide support as parents grow in their faith while they guide their children. Grade specific training and instructions will be part of this exciting transition. This year’s online program will run from October 2020 to May 2021. Please go to our St. Teresa of Avila Website: www.stteresaofavila.net and click on the Religious Education Registration tab to begin the registration program or go directly to the Registration Website we are using called Planning Center Services: https://registration.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/527493 There is a Family Registration fee of $75 plus an additional $10 per child. Online Registrations will be open throughout the month of September. Please contact the Director of Religious Education Program for any questions.

Anyone wishing to vote in the November election can register to do so before or after any of the Masses this Sunday, September 27 or October 4. Registration tables will be set up outside the church. Tell your family and friends. It is your civic duty to vote and registration will only take a few minutes. You must be 18 by November 3rd and a citizen of the United States in order to vote. You also need to have lived in Nevada for at least 30 days. Please remember to bring your ID with you.

40 DAY FOR LIFE continues until November 1st—join us! Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We begin another season in our efforts to instill in our communities and nation a true respect for the sanctity of life. As part of the variety of ways we can participate, I call to your attention the 40 Days for Life campaign, which in our diocese has three key components: prayer and fasting; prayerful vigil; and community outreach. This campaign will begin September 23rd and end Sunday, November 1st. The idea of forty days focuses on a time of prayer and penance when we turn our hearts to God. It is a time of conversion, a change of heart. Through the 40 Days of Life we pray that there will be conversion in the hearts of people in our country, so that they will cherish and respect God’s gift of life and there will be an end to abortion.

Entrusting our efforts to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I am

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

    THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION—

A Journey of Conversion, "Come follow me"

RCIA is the process by which adults become members of the Catholic Church. This includes adults who have never been baptized as well as those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition. Catholics who would like to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist or who would like to reconnect with their faith are also welcome to participate. We meet Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

For more information, please contact Tina Akerley at 882-1968 ext. 112.

Father Tom would like to express his sincere gratitude to those who continue to support our

parish during these hard times. Some are extraordinarily generous. He is deeply moved

    by your thoughtfulness.

    IMPORTANT CHANGE!

THE SCHOOL MASSES HAVE STARTED, AND IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH STUDENTS AND PARISHIONERS, THE THURSDAY MASS WILL NOW BE AT 8:30AM.

There is a need for volunteers to sign up for Ushering and Cleaning for the 12:00pm and 5:00pm Sunday Masses. We have skeletal coverage but need additional bodies for backup in case the regulars need a break. If you can help with either Mass, please call the Church at 882-1968 and ask for Kitty. She is a volunteer who is coordinating the ushering/cleaning schedule for all Masses.

Can you help? St. Teresa School would like to put in combination air conditioning and heat units in the upper grade classrooms. There are five classrooms. Thanks to our generous parents, we were able to fund two classrooms. Can you help with the next three? With the smoke and Covid, we need to keep the windows closed even during this hot weather. Each unit is $7000 plus electrical. If you would like more information please contact Peggy Burger at 775-882-2079, ext 101. A donation of any amount would help. Thank you. Peggy Burger - Principal

Private Prayer Time The church will now be available after daily Masses for one hour so those who would like to spend quiet time with our Lord can be accommodated.

COVID PRAYER Loving Lord, In this time of anxiety, give me serenity. In this time of fear, give me confidence in You. In his time of illness, help me preserve my health and the health of all those around me. In this time of social isolation, let my interactions with others be full of wisdom and compassion. In this time of worry, give me the courage to reaffirm my belief that all I know of tomorrow is that Providence will rise before the Sun. Amen.

—RESERVATIONS & MASKS ARE NECESSARY TO ATTEND MASS— So that all may attend one of the weekend Masses, please remember that seating is limited. We can only have 50 people at each Mass and we have 2000 families to accommodate. The 50 maximum includes the priest, music ministry, lector, ushers, etc. Many people are disappointed when calling to find out that their Mass is already full. The Governor has mandated that only 50 people may gather at one time. If we go over this limit, he has indicated that he will have to close our doors. If you want to go to several Masses, please attend the weekday Masses. There is no need to call for a reservation for these daily Masses. Thank you for understanding this limited seating situation due to Covid 19. It is also mandated by the Governor that masks must be worn. The Diocese Protocols are in agreement with this State order. We do not want Mass time to be a time of contention, please abide by this order or we must ask you to leave so the church is not shut down. Thanks for your attention to these mandates.
