This Really Good Stuff® product includes: • 8 Two-sided Mats • 120 Chips, laminated • Storage Box • This Really Good Stuff® Instructional Guide Congratulations on your purchase of this Really Good Stuff® Fraction Street Activity–a fun, engaging way to practice fraction skills.
Meeting the StandardsThis Really Good Stuff® Fraction Street Activity is aligned with the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics below. For alignment with other state standards, please refer to our website’s Standards Match.
Number and Operations3.NF.A.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by
1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
3.NF.A.3b Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.4.NF.A.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n ×
a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Preparing the Fraction Street ActivityBefore introducing the Fraction Street Activity, make copies of this Really Good Stuff® Instructional Guide, cut apart the reproducibles, and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our website at www.reallygoodstuff.com.
Introducing the Fraction Street ActivityGather students around a work area with the Fraction Street Activity. Display the Rounding Route Mat with six houses. Discuss the images on the Mat. Point to the houses on the Mat. Notice that there are six houses with the same features; a door, a window, a roof, and a yard. There is a sidewalk and a street in front of each house. Display the Chips one at a time, naming each piece: colored roof, colored door, person in window, car, dog, and For Sale sign. Show how the pieces create a lively street when placed on the Mat.
Explain to students that they will be bringing the Fraction Streets to life by placing the correct number and type of Chips on the Mat to create the fractions listed on the direction signs. Point to the direction sign at the top of the Mat where each feature has a fraction next to it. Explain how they are to place the correct number of each item on the Mat to make the fraction listed. For example: The Rounding Route Mat direction sign says “Colored Roof – ½”. The Mat has six houses. ½ of 6
houses means 1 of every 2 houses should have a colored roof, or a total of 3. Show how you would place a colored roof on three houses. Discuss how 3/6 is equivalent to ½. Continue to fill the Mat with Chips together, asking for volunteers to help.
Fraction Street CenterUse the Fraction Street Activity for review and practice in a center, along with copies of the Fraction Street Activity Record Sheet Reproducible. Allow students to choose which Mat to work on or differentiate by assigning the Mats based on ability. Have students work independently or in groups to create the fractions listed, record their answers on the reproducible, and return the materials to the Storage Box when finished. Laminate a copy of the Fraction Street Activity Answer Key Reproducible and use it to correct their work. Note any misunderstandings. Re-teach as necessary.
Fraction Street GameThis game can be played with two players or teams. Choose a Fraction Street Activity Mat with the same number of houses for each player/team. Place the Chips in the Box with the lid slightly covering it, or in a bag so the pieces cannot be seen. The player/team with the closest birthday goes first. The first player/team chooses a Chip without looking, then determines if they can use that Chip to fill their Mat. Players/teams take turns choosing Chips and placing them on their Mat. If a Chip is chosen that cannot be used, that turn is forfeited and the other player/team will go. Play continues until each team has completed all the fractions on their Mat. The player/team to finish first correctly creating all the fractions on their Mat wins.
Create-Your-Own Fraction Street Mat and Chips Challenge your class to create their own version of the Fraction Street Activity. Copy and distribute the Create-Your-Own Fraction Street Mat Reproducible and the Create-Your-Own Fraction Street Chips Reproducible. Discuss the options for fractions when you have six houses; halves, thirds, and sixths. Then have students name their street, determine what fraction of each item they would like their mat to have, fill in the information, color the mat, then color and cut out the chips. Encourage them to trade mats or keep them in your center.
Fraction Street Activity AssessmentCopy the Create-Your-Own Fraction Street Mat Reproducible and fill in the directions to create an assessment. Keep this as a master. Copy the new master and distribute to students with a copy of the Create-Your-Own Fraction Street Chips Reproducible and a copy of the Fraction Street Record Sheet Reproducible. Ask students to complete the Assessment Mat using the chips and then record their answers on the Record Sheet. Correct their work noting any misunderstandings. Re-teach and practice as necessary.
