FRACTIONS

Page 2: fractions introduction

INTRODUCTIONA fraction is part of a whole. It's

less than 1 whole thing, but more than 0. We use fractions all the

time in real life. Fractions look a little like division expressions, but they aren't problems to be solved. They are a way of expressing an amount. Like numbers, fractions tell you how much you have of something.

Page 3: fractions introduction

We can write fraction in different ways -

a common fraction 2/5

a decimal 0.4

a percentage 40%

Page 4: fractions introduction

THERE ARE 2 MAIN PARTS OF A COMMONFRACTION

NUMERATOR says how many parts in the fraction

DENOMINATOR says how many equal parts in the

whole object

Page 5: fractions introduction

Lets imagine we have 1 pizza divided into 8 slices

Say that you take 1 of 8 slices

Say that you take 1/8 of pizza

For eg :

Page 6: fractions introduction

We write that because pizza has 8 slices...

And we are talking about 1

Page 7: fractions introduction

What happens if we take 2 slices at a time ?

Now you are taking 2/8 of pizza.

The bottom number 8, stayed the same , since the pizza is still divided into same number of slices .
