Differences between structured and un-structured FM
Unstructured Frame Maker uses taggedparagraphs without any imposed logicalstructure, except that expressed by theauthor's concept, topic organization, and the
formatting supplied by paragraph tagsstructured document has element definitionsstored in its Element Catalog. These definitionsdescribe the allowable contents for each typeof element the document can have, and theymay also specify attributes and formatting forthe elements. If all the elements in a documenthave contents and attributes that meet thesespecifications, the document is valid.

Basic hierarchical structure
Two classes of elements (SGML)
Elements fall into two basic classes determined by theirallowable contents :
1. A container element can hold text, other elements, or both. Containerelements build the document's structure. In a typical document, mostelements are containers-such as heads, paragraphs, sections, andtables. These elements are represented in the Structure View bybubbles with round corners.
2. An object element is a single object-a marker, cross-reference,system variable, equation, or anchored frame. You cannot type inthese elements or add child elements to them. Object elements are
represented by bubbles with square corners.

About Templates
A template is a document that consists of a predefined set ofstyles, page layout definitions (page size, margins, etc.), andspecial text. Templates are used to format other documents.
Templates are valuable because:
Templates save time. Templates make large-scale,professional documentation projects more manageable.Instead of opening a blank document and designing the stylesand page layouts every time you create a new document, youopen a template that contains the styles and page layoutdefinitions created for your documentation library.
Templates provide consistency. If you work on large
documents over a long period of time, or work with otherpeople on the same document, maintaining consistencythroughout a documentation library is crucial. Templates helpensure that the page formats are consistent across alldocuments.

Importing Formats from a Template
In addition to creating new documents based on a template, youcan import individual formats from the template. This feature isvaluable when, for example, your documents include differentpage layouts, but must use the same paragraph and characterformats.
To update formats from a template:
- With the new document window active, select File > Import >Formats.
- The Import Formats dialog box appears

Pages in Frame Maker
Body Page: It show the background text and graphics from thecorresponding master page and contain a documents content.
Master Page: It specify the page layout and the background textfor document pages (for example, page headers and footers).
Reference Page: are used to store frequently used graphics thatyou want to use consistently throughout a document, and then use
the graphics on body pages where theyre needed. (i.e. text or clipart that you can copy and paste on body pagesfor example, symbols for cautions and notes). Frame Maker provides thefollowing six reference pages: Reference page 1 is used to store frequently used graphics. Reference pages 2 and 5 are used for HTML and XML
conversions.
Reference page 6 is used to store formatting information forheadings

AMTOSS
AMTOSS has been designed to improve the organization tofacilitate Automated Data Retrieval.
AMTOSS is based on the concept of using a standard and uniquenumbering system that is an expansion of the ATA Chapter -Section - Subject numbering system applied to the 100 through
800 page blocks.
Page blocks The size and complexity of AMM chapters dictatesthe need to break down the subjects within the AMM chapter.
Page blocks are used to further sub-divide information in the AMM.

Effectivity within Frame Maker
The effectivity of a procedure means identifying the aircraft that aprocedure is used for, if that procedure does not apply to allaircraft.
Effectivity within Frame Maker is identified in two ways Effect element the Effect element is used in the text
flow. To use the Effect element, do the following: Type in the text that has the effectively. Example:
On Aircraft 45-006 and 45-008 thru 45-056, do thebaro/elevation adjustment procedure.
Select the text that needs to be an effectivity. Using the Element Catalog, change the text to an
Effect element. The text will change to underlined
and italicized, to make it more noticeable to thereader. Note: Do not use the italicize and underlinestyles under the format option. If you do this, thestyles will be removed during the documentprocessing procedure.

Change drivers employed
Most changes to effectivity are the result of modsums, ECRs, LES-FTs and SBs. Modsums, ECRs, and LES-FTs will state which aircraft they will
become effective on.
SB effectivity In some cases, the SB will define a unique effectivity, so the
effectivity statement will be of the form On aircraft modifiedper SB 45-xx-xx.
In other cases, the SB will bring existing aircraft up to thecurrent production configuration. There will be two differentconfigurations, the initial and updated ones. In this case, theeffectivity statement will be of the form, On Aircraft 45-005
thru 45-055 not modified per SB 45-xx-xx (initialconfiguration) and On Aircraft 45-005 thru 45-055 modifiedper SB 45-xx-xx and 45-056 and subsequent (updatedconfiguration)

Completion of a unit of work
Completeness check of a document
Spell check the document The document can be spell checked by clicking on the
spell check button.
Validate the document Element -> Validate
Frame Maker will begin to validate the document. If aquestionable section is found, it will identified and adialog box will appear. An error that involves a Refid that refers to a procedure
that is in another C/S/S is acceptable (click on the StartValidating button to continue the validating).
Other errors must be investigated and fixed.
The program will not keep track of reaching the end of thedocument during the validation process.
