Director’s Notes

A Part of MeI love theatre. I have spent the last forty years acting, directing and attending live theatre. Theatre is a part of me.

I love restaurants. I have spent the last thirty-plus years as chef, waiter, trainer, consultant and diner. Restaurants are a part of me.

Last year, a high school production of Les Misérables that I directed was scheduled to open the middle weekend of March. We were shut down the day before opening and instead of multiple sold-out shows; the kids were able to perform twice for their parents only. That was the last time I was involved with theatre or saw a live show.

Last March 7th, my family and friends took me out to my favorite pizza restaurant for my birthday dinner. Until last week, that was the last time I ate inside a restaurant.

Welcome to Fully Committed! When I was asked to direct a real live play about a restaurant, it felt as if I’d won the lottery. Throw in the fact that the show is a comedy (and indulges my deeply-internalized need to laugh in 2021) and the pairing felt like destiny. My only hope for you this evening is to sit back, relax and laugh.

Tonight you will see Josh Peyton portray nearly forty different characters from the restaurant world. I know all of these people—both guests and staff. I really like this play because it lovingly pokes a little fun at everyone but does so while never being mean to anyone. I am very grateful for Josh’s willingness and ability to “play along” with my crazy visions of these people. I whole-heartedly believe I can predict his work here is going to bring you tremendous joy. His performance is nothing short of brilliant.

I am also very grateful for the many collaborators it takes to realize a production like this. Stage manager, Jeanne Shelton, and assistant director, Brendan Brown, have collaborated every step of the way and their willingness, ideas and positive attitudes have been vital to our success. As always, the Playhouse technical and design staff are the heroes behind the scenes and with this show, sound designer, John Gibilisco, deserves a special shout out. As you watch the show, you will quickly understand why.

So, let’s “86” the despair of 2020 and launch into this Spring with some laughs. I know for certain I need them. I hope you enjoy your “meal.”

A NOTE TO OUR PATRONSLast July in light of the pandemic, we made the decision to re-imagine our season with small-cast titles through February 2021 with the hopes that we might be able to mount full-scale productions again by the end of February. In November, as hospitalizations skyrocketed, the decision was made to re-imagine the remainder of the season—through June 2021—with small-cast shows. As you can imagine, there are not endless amounts of shows with very small casts, and there are even fewer small-cast comedies. When Fully Committed was brought up as an option, it seemed like the perfect script. A one-person comedy! I hadn’t heard of the show before, which is rather surprising. The New York production starred Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett from Modern Family) and a quick Google search populated many interviews with late night TV hosts touting the show. Our play selection committee unanimously agreed to put it on the second half of the season. But who would tackle this challenging show?

Enter the talented, creative and hardworking director/actor duo of Jim McKain and Josh Peyton. You may have seen Jim McKain on stage at OCP in numerous shows over the years, but this is his OCP directorial debut! (Although he has directed often around the community.) Jim has been a part of the Playhouse family much longer than I have, and I’m thrilled to have him at the helm of this comedy. OCP subscribers will definitely know the incredible talent of actor Josh Peyton. While Josh has wowed audiences in recent years with lead roles in shows such as Of Mice and Men and Sweat, my first OCP memory of him was as Willard in Footloose. His comedic portrayal of this likeable country bumpkin stole the show! I am so grateful to them both for dedicating so much of their time, talent and energy to this show.

Thank you so much for viewing this production—whether in person or online. We have some amazing shows still coming up this season and our 2021/22 season will be announced on April 20. The best way to see our shows is as a season subscriber. Subscribers receive the lowest ticket prices and get priority seating. If you’re not already a season subscriber, our friendly and helpful Box Office staff and volunteers can help get you signed up!

Thank you for supporting OCP. Enjoy the show.
