• OBJECT PRONOUNS• How to go from:• I’m giving the pen to Jean.• Je donne le stylo à Jean.• I’m giving it (the pen) to Jean.• Je le donne à Jean.• I’m giving it (the pen) to him (to Jean).• Je le lui donne.

DIRECT OBJECTS (DO)—WHAT ARE THEY?

• Direct objects receive the action of the verb:• I’m watching the movie. (What am I watching?

The movie=the direct object.)• He’s closing the window. (What’s he closing? The

window=the DO)• We’re writing letters. (What’re we writing?

letters=the DO)• You’re giving flowers. (You’re giving what?

Flowers=the DO)

OBJECT PRONOUNS EN FRANÇAIS

• Let’s talk direct objects en français. • The Agreement thing. Nouns can be

masculine/feminine/singular/plural, right?• So….en français….we have to match nouns

w/pronouns for number and gender.• Le/la/l’(before a vowel sound) or les, remember?

POSITION….WHERE DO DO’S AND IO’S (INDIRECT OBJECTS) GO?

• BEFORE THE VERB!• BEFORE THE VERB!• BEFORE THE VERB!• THEN….consider ne…pas, our verb sandwich.• Bread—ham—bread, right?• BUT: bread—cheese—ham—bread, right?• Subject ne…DO/IO…verb…pas…• *In the PC, TREAT THE AUXILIARY!

IN OUR PREVIOUS EXAMPLES…

• I’m watching the movie. Je regarde le film.• Le film=masculine singular=le. Je le regarde.• He’s closing the window. Il ferme la fenêtre. La

fenêtre=fem. sing.=la. Je la ferme.• We’re writing letters. Nous écrivons les lettres.

Les lettres=fem.pl.=les. Nous les écrivons.• You’re giving flowers. Vous donnez les fleurs. Les

fleurs=fem.pl.=les. Vous les donnez.

SO……IN THE NEGATIVE(VERB SANDWICH, NOW WITH DO/IO’S)

•Je NE le regarde PAS. •Il NE la ferme PAS.•Nous NE les écrivons PAS.•Vous NE les donnez PAS.

WHAT ABOUT IF PEOPLE ARE OBJECTS?
