The two architects can be seen as representative of the two distinct sides of Baroque architecture in Rome

• Bernini embraced a Baroque classicism

• strictly inspired by the religious concept that the proportions of buildings should correspond to those of man

• Borromini’s architecture adapted classical elements to a more innovative architecture that was defined by organically curving lines and a complicated interplay of geometrical forms.

• his façades and his famous bizarre bell towers took shape out of a series of geometric subunits, such as squares, rectangles, circles and ovals, repeated in an alternating sequence

In Borromini's case, geometry is not necessarily meant or only generate form, but also remains an implicit justification of the building as a whole. It becomes a sort of hidden dimension, disguised by a profusion of structural and decorative manipulations.
