LETTER FROM THE CHAIR AND THE PRESIDENT

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the final downtown concerts of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 127th season. The 400-plus outstanding performances and events in Chicago and across the country featuring the CSO, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, and the educational programs of the Negaunee Music Institute, including the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, are a testament to the profound and far-reaching cultural impact of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.

Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti curated a beautiful season for the Orchestra, and the works chosen for his June concerts celebrate their remarkable partnership. Yo-Yo Ma joins Muti and the Orchestra for Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto on a program that also includes his Festive Overture and Prokofiev’s Symphony no. 3. Muti chose to bookend the season with canonic works by Rossini in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his death: first the William Tell Overture and now his glorious Stabat mater, performed by a cast of distinguished soloists and the Chicago Symphony Chorus in a rousing conclusion of its sixtieth anniversary season. Also on the program are Mozart’s Kyrie in D minor and Chant sur la mort de Joseph Haydn by Cherubini, one of the nineteenth century’s most influential composers and teachers.

In addition to other programs of the CSO and Symphony Center Presents, Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma joins CSO and Civic musicians, the Chicago Children’s Chorus, and the St. Sabina Band for a special Concert for Peace on June 10 at St. Sabina on Chicago’s South Side.

We’d like to congratulate Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek, who recently completed their tenures as the Mead Composers-in-Residence. Appointed to three-year terms by Riccardo Muti in 2015, Adams and Ogonek cocurated the MusicNOW series for the last three seasons, commissioning nine new works in addition to their own CSO commissions. Their creativity and enthusiasm for MusicNOW made its twentieth season particularly memorable.

As our season closes, we express our gratitude to our many friends whose generosity ensures that the important work of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra continues for generations to come. Thank you to all of our subscribers, donors, volunteers, and sponsors for your support. It allows the CSO to remain a world-class orchestra and sustains the ongoing legacy of programs that engage more than 450,000 people each year in life-enriching musical experiences.

We look forward to seeing you at Ravinia this summer and at Symphony Center again in September.

During the 2018–19 season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association celebrates the one hundredth season of two flagship programs: the series of concerts for children and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, both founded during the 1919–20 season by second music director Frederick Stock.

A century ago, Frederick Stock’s remark-able work to promote music “as a vital element in the civic growth of

the community” was described by the Chicago Tribune as “the most important steps forward in the development of American orchestral music that Chicago has ever taken.” These initiatives nurtured interest in orchestral music among new generations of musicians and concertgoers and provided performances by the Civic Orchestra in underserved areas of the city, “where peo-ple, because of their remoteness, are denied the privilege of hearing good music.” As Civic

alumni began to populate the ranks of profes-sional orchestras, here in Chicago and across the country, they carried on the unique skills and tradition of excellence embodied by the CSO.

Today, the CSOA’s Negaunee Music Institute is both a beneficiary and steward of this legacy, serving tens of thousands of people each year through its mission to connect individuals and communities to the extraordinary musical resources of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

During the 2018–19 season, the Institute will celebrate these landmark anniversaries through special programming and additional investment

in the CSOA’s education, training, and commu-nity engagement initiatives. Highlights of the season celebration include:

Reducing barriers to hear the Orchestra perform live by providing free tickets and transportation for Chicago Public School students to CSO school concerts

Expanding partnerships with school and community organizations to deepen the understanding of orchestral music. The Institute’s partnerships include opportuni-ties to attend concerts at Symphony Center, performances by CSO chamber ensembles in school and community locations, and additional programming based on the unique needs of partner organizations.

A CSO and Civic Orchestra side-by-side concert conducted by Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti at Millennium Park as well as numerous special concerts, events, and projects featuring Civic members and fellows alongside guest artists and alumni

A series of activities engaging Civic alumni

Expanded service through music as part of the Initiative for a More Peaceful Chicago, including songwriting workshops at St. Sabina Church, Illinois Youth Centers, and other social-service organizations.

At their founding during the 1919–20 season, the Civic Orchestra and Children’s Concerts were vital “to the social welfare of the commu-nity and to the musical future of America.” In 2018, the expansive educational and community engagement work of the CSOA carries on this same spirit, providing access, training, and service to the residents of Chicago and listeners across the world.

Offstage, I enjoy . . .I grew up in Chicago. It’s been great to come back and live here as an adult and explore my new(ish) neighborhood, Logan Square. My parents still live in Hyde Park, and I have friends from high school that I can now spend time with regularly. I especially enjoy our Friday matinee concerts because afterwards I can go out to dinner or hang out with friends with “regular” jobs. My husband plays in the Utah Symphony, so we FaceTime a lot, and I also go there to visit when I can. It’s a nice excuse to get out of the city.

My favorite non-classical music is . . .Some of my all-time favorites are Björk, Radiohead, and the Talking Heads. I think Björk reigns as “queen of all” for me because her voice is so unique, as is her music. Other artists I’ve enjoyed over the past few years include Little Dragon, Anderson Paak, Hiatus Kaiyote, and St. Vincent.

Was there a specific moment or experience when you connected with your instrument? For many years, I attended Interlochen Arts Camp, where I studied flute and other art forms. During my final summer there (I was about fifteen)

something flipped, and sud-denly I was totally obsessed with flute. I was in one of the lower-level bands and had mornings free, so every day I went and listened to the top-tier orchestra rehearse. I wanted to figure out what I needed to do to play with that group.

What are you looking forward to next season?Verdi’s Aida with Maestro Muti. I don’t have much experi-ence performing opera. Some of my wind colleagues were mem-bers of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra before coming to the CSO, so I know it’s going to be amazing to share this experi-ence with them and Muti.

Michael Brown Baritone

What work are you are most looking forward to performing?Looking ahead, I’m excited for Verdi’s Requiem next season. There is nothing like perform-ing this piece with the CSO under Maestro Muti.

Offstage, I like to . . .I really enjoying woodworking and renovating my home. My wife and I have been renovating our 1898 bungalow for the last five years and finding hidden pieces of history along the way. We found an old bourbon crate

(unfortunately empty) from Chapin & Gore, a company that was located at 63 East Adams—the current location of the CSOA offices and Tesori.

Do you play another instrument or perform in a non-classical vocal style or setting?I play guitar. I really enjoy playing and singing folk and bluegrass music. I also sing a lot of musical theater and teach musical theater singing at Northwestern University.

Currently I’m reading/watching/listening to . . .Reading Thomas the Train, watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and listening to “Life Is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts, all with my two-year-old!

What is your most mem-orable CSC performance or experience?Singing Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky at Carnegie Hall on Super Bowl Sunday 2015; then most of the Chorus got stuck there in a blizzard!

What was a highlight of the CSC sixtieth-anniversary season for you?Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe with its extraordinarily lush harmo-nies typical of the impression-ist movement in music.

Offstage, I like to . . .Since 2004, I’ve been privileged to work for Bright Horizons Family Solutions as a teacher for two-year-old children. When I chose the path to be an early childhood educator, I dedicated myself to helping our future grow into responsible, competent learners. Teaching one child—let alone a whole classroom of young students—is

no simple task, but I hold a gen-uine passion for helping young kids, while watching them learn and achieve.

My favorite non-classical music is . . .I’m a huge fan of musical theater. I’ll take them all—from old fashioned to modern day productions. In my opinion, musical theater tells a cohesive story full of emotions and over the top actions. The music breathes life into the story on stage in inventive ways, from ballads and 1970s hits to rap and romantic love songs. They add a flare that doesn’t exist in reality, because—let’s face it—random

songs and dance numbers just don’t spontaneously happen, unfortunately.

Do you perform any non-classical styles?I’m a proud member of An Octave Above, an eight-person a cappella ensemble comprised of four women and four men. Since 2001, we have been performing throughout the Chicagoland area as well as producing studio recordings that can be heard on iTunes and YouTube. It’s a very versatile group with an impres-sive repertoire, including original arrangements, Beatles covers, pop rock, new metal, 1950s doo-wop, standards, and more!

Spotlight on PHILANTHROPY

What inspires your love of music? How does music fit into and enrich your daily life? When I was young, I was convinced that I would grow up to be a famous singer, à la Olivia Newton John! Although I was not classically trained, I appreciated the rigorous process of what it takes to be a musician: the memorization, practice, and preparation for performance. As a young adult, I starting attending concerts at the Cleveland Orchestra, and then later, the Kansas City Symphony, and I fell in love with classical music. I really do love music of all genres. I listen to music almost every day, and when I’m at home, I will always choose to listen to music over watching TV.

As a new member of the CSOA Board of Trustees, how has your experience been so far, and what has been your favorite musical experience? My experience has been terrific. I am most impressed by the level of professionalism demonstrated by my fellow CSOA Trustees; each member conducts themselves with a sense of deep responsibility to an orchestra that is a great cultural treasure. It is clear that the board loves this orchestra and is committed to supporting the CSOA.

Recently, I attended the CSO concert that featured the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto. It was amazing! It is a really special thing to have an orchestra

performing and presenting innovative contemporary music.

As an executive at Bank of America, and a CSOA trustee, can you speak to the importance of the “Global Sponsorship”?Bank of America’s partnership with the CSO represents an absolute connection to the community, and our commit-ment to the arts. The CSOA is a gem—a great cultural asset in the city of Chicago. By making this investment, we demon-strate our commitment to the arts and its ability to connect people across cultures. It’s a huge benefit to the CSOA, and the musicians, but it also helps to enrich the human experience of everyone that is touched by this music—not just in Chicago, but around the coun-try and the world—bringing beauty to millions of people.

Why do you think it is important for the corporate sector to support the arts?Corporations are made up of diverse people with diverse interests. I think it’s important that a corporation invest in the things that their clients, customers, and employees care about. When a company

pays attention and responds by investing thoughtfully in the community, everybody benefits. Individuals can be incredibly philanthropic. Corporations can bring a new level of sustainabil-ity in their support of the arts. In doing so, companies use their resources to elevate the arts for the benefit of everyone and send a great message about their commitment to the community.

What are you most looking forward to next season?I’m excited for the early October program next season with Maestro Muti con-ducting Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto and Brahms’s Hungarian Dances. Outside of the classical repertoire, there’s lots to choose from, such as the CSO at the Movies Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert. There’s truly something for everyone. The CSOA does an amazing job of offering a broad range of programs that appeal to a wide audience, reaching across communities and sharing the joy of music.

Renée Metcalf, Senior Vice President and Illinois Market Executive for Global Commercial Banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, recently joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association Board of Trustees. Bank of America is the Global Sponsor of the CSO; a very significant partnership in the history of the CSOA.

Spotlight on PHILANTHROPY

The important partnership between Bank of America and the CSOA is rooted in the longstanding service of Merrill Lynch executives on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Board of Trustees. Bank of America has been a corporate partner of the CSOA since 1988. Today, the CSOA benefits from the volunteer leadership of Trustee Renée Metcalf and Life Trustees John Pratt and Charles Ashby (Chuck) Lewis. The partnership between the CSOA and Bank of America evolved significantly in 2007–08, when Bank of America made key acquisitions and the CSOA made key artistic advancements: Bank of America acquired Chicago’s LaSalle Bank in 2007 and Merrill Lynch in 2008. All three had been corporate partners of the CSOA. The CSOA announced in 2009 that Riccardo Muti would become the CSO’s next music director. Bank of America first became the Global Sponsor of the CSO in Maestro Muti’s inaugural 2010–11 season.

Bank of America’s support has been instrumental in help-ing the CSOA share its music and mission with the people of Chicago and the world. As the Global Sponsor of the CSO, Bank of America’s contribution provides broad-based support for the concerts and programs of the CSO in Chicago and around the globe. This includes concerts in Chicago, national and international tours, as well as CSO Resound record-ings and CSO radio broad-casts (estimated 13 million

listeners annually). The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association is proud to con-tinue this historic partnership and is grateful for Bank of America’s generous support.

Global Sponsor of the CSO

Currently in its eighth year, the Bank of America Global Sponsorship of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra represents the largest annual corporate contribution to the CSOA, and one of the most prominent sponsorships in the world of arts and culture.

APPROXIMATE PERFORMANCE TIME25 minutes

At Leonard Bernstein’s funeral service, in the apartment on Central Park West where he had lived for nearly twenty years, Rabbi Marshall Meyer led the prayers, beginning with “Eicha yashva vadad ha’ir,” the opening lines of the

Lamentations of Jeremiah. These are words Bernstein had set to music more than half a century earlier, in a piece for soprano and orchestra that ultimately became the finale of his first important orchestral work, the Jeremiah Symphony.

In 1965, Bernstein told The New York Times, “All our lives are spent in the attempt to resolve conflicts. . . . It is only after death that it can finally be perceived whether we ever succeeded.” The search for faith is the subject of Bernstein’s three symphonies, and that search, with all its difficulties, doubts, and hopes, was the single-most compelling theme of his career. In 1977, when he was rerecording the Jeremiah Symphony, he commented:

In a sense, I suppose, I am always writing the same piece, as all composers do. But each time it is a new attempt in other terms to write this piece, to have the piece achieve new dimensions, or even acquire a new vocabulary. The work I have been writing all my life is about the struggle that is born of the crisis of our century, a crisis of faith. Even way back when I wrote Jeremiah, I was wrestling with that problem.

In 1939, after graduating from Harvard with honors, Bernstein turned down his father’s job offer at the Samuel Bernstein Hair Company—for $100 a week to start, with free room and board—and moved to New York to look for a job in the music business. Every night he composed music at the Steinway grand that was his apart-ment’s only luxury. (He then took all his sketches to Aaron Copland for advice.) That summer he wrote a lamentation for soprano and orchestra, a setting of passages drawn from the book of Jeremiah in the Hebrew young Lenny had known from childhood. His father Sam had read from the Torah nearly every night after listening to the news, sang Jewish melodies in the shower, and insisted that Lenny attend Hebrew school. (Lenny’s religious skepticism also dates from an early age: at four, on learning that God had made Adam from dust, he mixed dirt and water in a bowl and waited for results.)

It wasn’t until 1942, however, that Bernstein wrote anything he was willing to promote—a sonata for clarinet and piano that was published later that year as his opus one. That autumn, Bernstein learned of a competition organized by the New England Conservatory, and he decided to enlarge on his 1939 Lamentation—his “Jewish song,” as he called it—and make it part of a symphony. As the December 31 deadline approached, Bernstein was scrambling to finish scoring the work, and he enlisted a number of his friends, including composer David Diamond, as copyists. (His sister Shirley was assigned the job of writing in the clefs and time signatures.) After three days and nights of round-the-clock work, Bernstein’s First Symphony was finished. He took the train to

Page 31: Francesco Lecce-Chong˜ Maya Lahyani˜mezzo-soprano Women … · Civic Orchestra of Chicago Francesco Lecce-Chong Maya Lahyani Mezzo-soprano Bella Voce Andrew Lewis Artistic Director

29

Boston and delivered the score in person, two hours before midnight.

The Jeremiah Symphony didn’t win the com-petition. (The prize went to the Evanston-born Gardner Read.) Serge Koussevitzky, the principal judge, suggested that since this was Bernstein’s first orchestral score, it was all right not to win. (In truth, Koussevitzky was always offended by the overtly popular nature of Bernstein’s music. In 1943, he forbade mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel to sing Bernstein’s jazzy and irreverent new song cycle, I Hate Music, in a recital with the composer. Bernstein and Tourel did the songs anyway, as encores.)

Although Koussevitzky was unenthusias-tic, Fritz Reiner, then music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony (and future music director of the Chicago Symphony), was impressed when he saw the score later that year, and he invited the composer to conduct the premiere in Pittsburgh. Bernstein couldn’t wait to tell Copland. “I know you want me to be amazed at your successes,” Copland wrote back, “but nothing that happens to you can ever surprise me. Isn’t that too bad. Least of all your triumphs as a composer.”

But first Bernstein made headlines as a conductor. On November 14, 1943, he stepped in to conduct the New York Philharmonic as a last-minute substitute for Bruno Walter; overnight he was a celebrity. Bernstein’s parents attended that concert, and perhaps for the first time they fully recognized the extent of their son’s talent. Leonard remembered that his father was “all aglow . . . absolutely dazzled, bewildered, stupefied. . . . He suddenly realized that it was all possible. And there was a great moment of forgiveness and very deep emotion.” That day Bernstein decided to dedicate the Jeremiah Symphony to his father.

The Pittsburgh premiere in January was a great success—“front pages, banner headlines, a shout-ing audience,” he pointedly told Koussevitzky—as were the performances in Boston three weeks later. In March and April, Bernstein conducted the symphony four times with the New York Philharmonic, and in May the New York Music Critics Circle named it the best American composition of the year. (It won the first ballot, beating out nineteen other nominated scores.)

In 1947 Bernstein led the Jeremiah Symphony in Jerusalem, conducting the Palestine (now Israel) Philharmonic in the Edison Cinema,

which doubled as a concert hall. He was greatly moved by playing this music in the city of Jeremiah’s lament, to an audience for whom Hebrew was a living language. “They rise with the crescendi and sink down with the decrescendi,” he told The Palestine Post after the concert. “They are like a barometer—there is nothing more subtle.”

The symphony is in three movements (both Koussevitzky and Sam Bernstein thought it needed a brighter fourth movement as a finale). Its musical style is pure Bernstein, moving freely from sweeping lyricism and deeply emotional outbursts to the spiky, jazzy, percussive sounds of Broadway. Although the composer claimed that there was little actual Hebrew melody in the score, several themes incorporate traditional liturgical cadences and motives. The entire sym-phony shows how deeply the music of Bernstein’s religious upbringing—from the hours spent sitting next to his father in temple to the Hebrew songs he sang at home—influenced the music he would one day write himself.

Sam Bernstein died on April 30, 1969, at the age of seventy-seven. His son, in his last season as music director of the New York Philharmonic, rearranged his program with the orchestra for the next week to include the Jeremiah Symphony.

Leonard Bernstein on the Jeremiah Symphony

I n the summer of 1939 I made a sketch for a Lamentation for soprano and orchestra. This sketch lay forgotten for two years, until in

the spring of 1942 I began a first movement of a symphony. I then realized that this new move-ment, and the scherzo that I planned to follow it, made logical concomitants with the Lamentation. Thus the symphony came into being, the Lamentation greatly changed, and the soprano supplanted by a mezzo-soprano. The work was finished in December 1942 and is dedicated to my father.

The symphony does not make use to any great extent of actual Hebrew thematic material. The first theme of the scherzo is paraphrased from a traditional Hebrew chant, and the opening phrase of the vocal part in the Lamentation is based on a liturgical cadence still sung today in commemoration of the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon. Other remembrances of Hebrew

liturgical music are a matter of emotional quality, rather than of the notes themselves.

As programmatic meanings, the intention is again not one of literalness, but of emotional quality. Thus the first movement (Prophecy) aims only to parallel in feeling the intensity of the prophet’s pleas with his people; and the scherzo (Profanation) to give a general sense of the

destruction and chaos brought on by the pagan corruption within the priesthood and the people. The third movement (Lamentation), being a setting of poetic text, is naturally a more literary conception. It is the cry of Jeremiah as he mourns his beloved Jerusalem, ruined, pillaged, and dishonored after his desperate efforts to save it.

The text is from the book of Lamentations.

cymbals, bass drum, gong, bells, glockenspiel, xylophone, celesta, two harps, organ, strings, and, in the final movement only, an offstage choir of women’s voices

APPROXIMATE PERFORMANCE TIME51 minutes

In 1930, the American astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh took a series of photographs at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, that confirmed his discovery of Pluto, the ninth major planet of the solar system. By then Gustav Holst’s The Planets

had already achieved such immense popularity with symphony audiences that Holst felt no need to add a new Pluto movement to make music conform to science. That turned out to be a wise decision: on August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union declassified Pluto to a minor planet, returning the solar system to the one Holst had set to music and creating a new verb in the process—“to pluto,” to demote or devalue someone or something, voted the 2006 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society.

In the 1920s, the swift, overwhelming suc-cess of The Planets both surprised and irritated Holst—much as Boléro would come to embarrass Ravel—who insisted that it wasn’t his best work. But the public was captivated by the combination of music and astrology—the music of the spheres made manifest. (Theodore Thomas gave the U.S. premiere with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on New Year’s Eve 1920, just six weeks after the first complete performance in London.)

It was Clifford Bax, the brother of composer Arnold Bax, who introduced Holst to astrology shortly after they met in 1913. Like countless people since—from true scientists to supermar-ket tabloid fans—Holst was fascinated by the

movements of the heavenly bodies and their influence on everyday people. Before beginning work on The Planets in 1914, Holst wrote to a friend:

I only study things that suggest music to me. Recently the character of each planet sug-gested lots to me, and I have been studying astrology fairly closely. It’s a pity we make such a fuss about these things. On one side there is nothing but abuse and ridicule, with the natural result that when one is brought face to face with overwhelming proofs, there is a danger of going to the other extreme. Whereas, of course, everything in this world is just one big miracle. Or rather, the universe itself is one.

During his two years of work on The Planets, Holst became, in his own words, “a skilled inter-preter of horoscopes,” and privately admitted that casting horoscopes for friends was a “pet vice.” (The Planets took two years to complete because of Holst’s teaching commitments at Saint Paul’s Girls’ School; he could only compose on week-ends and during the August vacation, when he locked himself in the stifling soundproof room of the school’s new music wing and wrote without interruption.)

Holst had long shown an interest in exotic subjects—he became interested in Hindu litera-ture and philosophy as a student, taught himself Sanskrit, and set his own translations of Sanskrit texts to music. It was his settings of verses from the Rig Veda that introduced Holst’s music to Clifford Bax in 1913, and, in turn, inspired Bax to bring up the subject of astrology.

Page 34: Francesco Lecce-Chong˜ Maya Lahyani˜mezzo-soprano Women … · Civic Orchestra of Chicago Francesco Lecce-Chong Maya Lahyani Mezzo-soprano Bella Voce Andrew Lewis Artistic Director

32

At the time of the first complete performance of The Planets in 1920, Holst was nervous that the public would read too much into his new work:

These pieces were suggested by the astrolog-ical significance of the planets; there is no program music in them, neither have they any connection with the deities of classical mythology bearing the same names. If any guide to the music is required, the subtitle to each piece will be found sufficient, especially if it can be used in a broad sense.

W hen the score was published the following year, Holst was careful to give it the plain subtitle “Suite

for Large Orchestra,” again suggesting that The Planets should be considered as music first and last. Holst’s daughter Imogen, a musician her-self, remembered that at the first private performance in 1919, the audience felt certain that the first movement, Mars, the Bringer of War—with its horrible pounding rhythm, ungainly march (in an unmarchable 5/4 time), and noisy brass fanfares—was a description of the war that was still going on, but, in fact, Holst had finished Mars early in the summer of 1914, before the outbreak of war that August. “After two mechanized wars,” Imogen later wrote, “it would be easy to take it for granted that [Mars] had been commissioned as background music for a documentary film of a tank battle, but Holst had never heard a machine gun when he wrote it, and the tank had not yet been invented.”

Even in 1919, peace could not have sounded more seductive than it does in the second movement, Venus, with its celestial wind chords, calm harp strumming, and floating violin melodies. Mercury begins as a scherzo of Mendelssohnian lightness, though it includes instruments like the bass oboe Mendelssohn never heard, and eventually reaches a climax that is very modern in its orchestral ingenuity. (Holst’s choice of instrumental colors is always keen, a reminder that when his own musical schooling disappointed him, he read Berlioz’s

exhaustive, classic treatise on instrumentation from cover to cover.)

With its dancing tempo and cheerful theme, Jupiter is a friendly and inviting planet (at the first rehearsal of this movement, the cleaning women in the corridors of the Queen’s Hall reportedly put down their mops and began to dance). A few years later, Holst brought Jupiter down to earth by turning its big central mel-ody into the patriotic anthem “I vow to thee, my country.” Saturn is remote and mysterious, suggesting the slow but relentless march of time and making humankind seem very small and insignificant. (Holst said it was his favorite movement.) Uranus, the Magician throws out a handful of notes, then continues to toss them around the orchestra, all the while inventing new

themes, combining materials, switching meters, and sidestep-ping any firm sense of central key.

Neptune, the planet farthest from the earth, offers an aston-ishing glimpse of eternity. Holst’s music, characterized not by mel-ody or harmony but by unforget-table chilling sounds and colors, owes much to Debussy, although Holst claimed he wasn’t a fan—he admired The Afternoon of a Faun, liked the nocturnes, “was never very happy about anything else,” and “hated” Pelleas and Melisande. Holst took the idea of a wordless female chorus from Debussy’s Sirens, but puts it off-stage. Beginning pianissimo (the

original manuscript suggested pppp), it concludes this astrological tour with a single measure of music, repeated, each time more quietly, until the sound is virtually lost in silence.

A footnote. In 2000, six years before Pluto was reclassified, Colin Matthews, an English composer, musicologist, and Holst enthusiast, composed “Pluto, the Renewer,” an addendum to The Planets that emerges directly from the famous fade-out with which Holst concluded his score eighty-five years earlier. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra played it as a postscript to Holst’s score in March 2001.

Phillip Huscher is the program annotator for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Francesco Lecce- Chong has garnered acclaim for his dynamic perfor-mances, commitment to innovative pro-gramming, and passion for commu-nity engagement. Recently appointed

the fifth music director of the Santa Rosa Symphony beginning with the 2018–19 season, Lecce-Chong will continue his tenure as music director and conductor of the Eugene Symphony in Oregon, a post he has held since the 2017–18 season. This summer, he concludes his position as associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. Lecce-Chong has appeared with orchestras around the world, including the National, Atlanta, Toronto, Milwaukee, and St. Louis symphony orchestras and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and collaborated with renowned soloists including Renée Fleming and Itzhak Perlman.

Lecce-Chong is equally at home in opera, hav-ing built his credentials as a staff conductor with Santa Fe Opera. At the Florentine Opera, he conducted Madama Butterfly with the Milwaukee Symphony, where he has been invited to close the 2018–19 season with Carmina Burana. Additional highlights for this season included subscription-series debuts with the Louisville

Orchestra and the Louisiana Symphony. In Europe, he took part in master classes at the Lucerne Festival under Bernard Haitink, as well as with the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich.

Also trained as a pianist and composer, Lecce-Chong champions the work of new composers and the need for arts education. As associate conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) from 2011–15, he curated and presented the works of both active and lesser-known composers, including two works commissioned by the orchestra, and two U.S. premieres. He also helped create the first MSO Composer Institute, providing performance opportunities for young American composers. Lecce-Chong has complemented his programming with a strong commitment to arts education for all ages. In Milwaukee, he provided artistic leadership for the MSO’s nationally lauded Arts in Community Education program—one of the largest arts integration programs in the country. His dedication to con-necting orchestras and communities continues in Pittsburgh, where he gives preconcert talks, conducts concerts for school audiences, and leads specially designed sensory-friendly performances.

Francesco Lecce-Chong is a native of Boulder, Colorado, where he began conducting at the age of sixteen. He is a graduate of the Mannes College of Music and Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller. He has worked with many internationally celebrated conductors, including Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Edo de Waart, and Manfred Honeck.

Bella Voce

Bella Voce proudly enriches Chicago’s cultural tapestry through intimate and moving perfor-mances of vocal music. Since 1983, the ensemble has enchanted audiences with presentations of vocal works, whether well-known, rare, or new. Bella Voce invites audiences to engage with artworks that have the power to uplift, move, and transform. Its concerts are crafted through research and careful attention to performance practices, and the ensemble partners with Chicago’s top period instrument ensembles to bring works for voice and orchestra to life. Its repertoire and performance practices are rooted

in the discipline of the English Renaissance and European baroque traditions, while breaking boundaries in order to explore the expressive and artistic potential of the human musical imagina-tion. Bella Voce is committed to Chicago and to making the world a safer, more peaceful, more beautiful place through art.

In 2004, Bella Voce received the prestigious Alice Parker ASCAP Chorus America Award for programming that was “an adventurous stretch” for both singers and audiences, notably the 2002 Midwest premiere of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Vigilia. The ensemble has recorded for Centaur, Harmonia Mundi, Narada, and Cedille Records and also has four self-produced CDs in release.

Bella Voce is an ensemble in residence at University of Illinois at Chicago School of Theatre and Music and is partially supported by the Elizabeth F. Cheney, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley, and MacArthur Funds for Arts & Culture at the Richard H. Driehaus foundations; the National Endowment for the Arts; Oak Park Area Arts Council; Illinois Arts Council, a state agency; and numerous individuals.

Civic Orchestra of Chicago

Since 1919, young artists have sought mem-bership in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago to develop their talents and to further prepare for careers as professional musicians. Founded by Frederick Stock, second music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra is the only training orchestra of its kind affiliated with a major American orchestra.

The Civic Orchestra offers emerging profes-sional musicians unique access to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) through immersive experiences with the musicians of the CSO and some of today’s most sought-after conductors, including world-renowned CSO Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti. With additional guid-ance from CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, Civic Orchestra musi-cians develop as exceptional orchestral players and engaged artists, cultivating their ability to succeed in the rapidly evolving world of music in the twenty-first century.

The importance of the Civic Orchestra’s role in Greater Chicago is underscored by its commit-ment to present concerts of the highest quality at no charge to the public. In addition to the critically acclaimed live concerts at Symphony Center, Civic Orchestra performances can be heard locally on WFMT (98.7 FM).

Civic musicians also expand their creative, professional, and artistic boundaries and reach diverse audiences through educational

performances at Chicago Public Schools, “artis-tic challenges” led by Yo-Yo Ma, and a series of chamber concerts at various locations throughout the city including Chicago Park District field houses, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and Zhou B Art Center.

To further expand its musician training, the Civic Orchestra launched the Civic Fellowship program in the 2013–14 season. Now engag-ing fourteen members of the Civic Orchestra, Fellows participate in a rigorous curriculum above and beyond their orchestral activities that is designed to build and to diversify their creative and professional skills.

The Civic Orchestra’s long history of pre-senting full orchestra performances without charge includes concerts at the South Shore Cultural Center (in partnership with the South Shore Advisory Council), the Apostolic Church of God, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, and the New Regal Theater, as well as numerous Chicago Public Schools.

The Civic Orchestra is a signature program of the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which offers a wide range of education and community programs that engage more than 200,000 people of diverse ages, incomes, and backgrounds each year, in Chicago and around the world. For more information on the Institute and its programs, please visit cso.org/institute.

Meet the MUSICIANS

Name: Hannah Cartwright

Instrument: Violin

Hometown: Wichita, Kansas

What is your most memorable musical moment?

As part of the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado, in 2016, we performed Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 6 with con-ductor Michael Stern. This piece is known for being quite tragic and the use of very loud and shocking hammer blows. There was a huge thunderstorm during our performance. There was a sense of intense passion and emotional investment in our music making, and the audience seemed very receptive to it as well. I felt so connected to the music, my colleagues performing with me, and the beautiful nature and mountains surrounding us. It was epic to say the least, and definitely a performance I will never forget!

Who is your favorite composer and/or what is your favorite piece?Johannes Brahms

If I weren’t a professional musician I would be . . .A personal assistant, professional organizer, or a visual designer, artist, or painter.

What inspired you to choose your instrument? When I was a toddler, I became interested in the Suzuki lessons some of my friends had started taking. My mother also guided me towards the violin, hoping that music would inspire me.

What are your interests and/or hobbies outside of music?I enjoy exploring new cuisines and cultures, impressionist painting, traveling, hiking, and being outdoors.

Name: Adam Ayers

Instrument: Cello

Hometown: Appleton, Wisconsin

What is your most memorable musical moment?

Performing Così fan tutte when I was in school—it completely changed how I think about Mozart.

Who is your favorite composer and/or what is your favorite piece?Right now, Prokofiev is my favorite composer, and my favorite piece is Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, but that will probably change by next week.

If I weren’t a professional musician I would be . . .Unhappy, but probably better off financially. Seriously though, I think I would still be in the music field somehow.

What inspired you to choose your instrument?I can’t remember, but I’m told that as soon as I tried the cello, I was hooked! (My parents are both musicians.)

What are your interests and/or hobbies outside of music?I enjoy trying new kinds of food, studying languages, and watching terrible low-budget sci-fi movies.

39

Name: Kelsey Williams

Instrument: Horn

Hometown: Newark, New York

What is your most memorable musical moment?

Growing up in a small town, a music program with no strings was fairly common. I didn’t grow up listening to a lot of symphonic music, so that rich orchestral sound was on my radar but not something that I was terribly familiar with. In seventh grade, I had the opportunity to play in a festival orchestra in New York. I was shy, didn’t know anyone, and sat down for our first rehearsal. I will never forget the first sounds we made together, and it was only the initial tuning. That warm sound grabbed my attention. From that moment on, I knew I was going to be in it for the long haul.

Who is your favorite composer and/or what is your favorite piece?Brahms is my absolute favorite. He is the king of transitions, and his simple melodies have so many different sides to them that really tug at the heart strings.

If I weren’t a professional musician I would be . . .I would have to do something outdoorsy—maybe an adventure guide or a park ranger. This world is just too cool not to explore.

What inspired you to choose your instrument?I actually didn’t choose it. I wanted to play saxophone in the worst way, but my mom, a music teacher, preferred to deal with beginning horn, rather than beginning sax. Luckily I fell in love with it.

What are your interests and/or hobbies outside of music?I enjoy trying new kinds of food, studying other languages, and traveling when I get the chance.

Name: Andrew Cooper

Instrument: Oboe

Hometown: Northampton, Massachusetts

What is your most memorable musical moment?

Performing Copland’s Quiet City for english horn, trumpet, and orchestra with my sister Rebecca

Who is your favorite composer and/or what is your favorite piece?Anything by Richard Strauss

If I weren’t a professional musician I would be . . .A teacher.

What inspired you to choose your instrument? No one else wanted to play oboe in fourth grade band, so I thought I’d give it a try!

What are your interests and/or hobbies outside of music? When I’m not practicing or making reeds, I enjoy cooking and reading.

Riccardo Muti in Rehearsal was awarded the Moige prize for the best TV programs 2016 for Education, Entertainment and Culture in Italy.

“[…] enlightening, intriguing, funny, amusing, rigorous and imaginative “report” about how Riccardo Muti works with musicians to get to the highest musical expression. Actually, all of these adjectives perfectly fit the conductor himself: it can’t be just by chance that anyone working with him regularly tells that he, more than other conductors, can open an unexpected semantic world behind every note, breath, accent, pause or phrase […]” - Amadeus Magazine
