Maybe you have dreamed of owning your own business for as long as you couldwalk. Or, maybe it’s a desire that has developed over time as you watch othersgrab hold of their destiny and create their own success. Starting a businessrequires hard work, long hours, and passion – and even with all of that, youaren’t guaranteed success.Owning a franchise, however, means starting with a business plan that’s alreadybeen proven and a host of other benefits, including:

Proven SuccessFranchises are successful. If the business itself wasn’t a success, the franchisorwouldn’t have the capital or the ability to have franchisees.

Lower RiskStarting a business from the ground up certainly has its rewards but it alsocomes at a higher risk than opting to own a franchise. You will have built-inguidance, training, and support from the franchisor and will follow a provenbusiness plan. You don’t have to worry about not having a marketing or anadvertising background or if you’ve never started a business before.

A Recognizable, Reputable BrandFranchises are born of a successful business. The franchisor has worked hard togrow an established brand that the public knows and trusts. As a franchisee, youbenefit from starting a business that already has a strong reputation andconsumers are more likely to try your business because you are backed by aknown name.

Training Programs

The Benefits of Owning aFranchise

Page 9: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

Franchisors have spent years growing their brand and business. They know whatit takes to succeed. Franchisors often provide an operations manual and initialtraining to help you become acquainted with the business, how it operates, what’s expected of you as a franchisee, and so on. You should also have ongoingtraining programs to keep you up-to-date with the latest franchise technologyand the franchise operations.

Location AssistanceOne of the biggest decisions you’re going to have to make, regardless of whetheryou start from the ground up or become a franchisee, is where to run yourbusiness. Does the business allow you to work out of home? Will you need torent or purchase a property? A franchisor will typically help franchisees identifyand locate prospective business locations that will put you in the best positionfor success.

Ongoing SupportThe franchisor wants you to succeed. Your success, after all, is integral to thebrand’s growth and overall success. As a result, franchisees often receive ongoingsupport. What type of support you receive will depend on the type of franchiseyou join but may include administrative support, marketing and advertisingsupport, and assistance recruiting employees and other staff.

What is the biggest benefit, in your opinion, ofowning a franchise?

Page 10: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

Think about a famous franchise in your town. McDonald’s, maybe. Count howmany McDonald’s you have on the same block. Just one? There’s a reason forthat: Franchisees pay a hefty franchise fee to use the franchise’s brand name, product, and trademark.

What is Franchise Exclusivity?Because franchisees pay a franchise fee and ongoing royalties, the franchisorwants to ensure the franchisee makes enough money. As a result, mostfranchises assign each franchisee a territory in which the franchisee hasexclusivity.Let’s use McDonald’s as an example again. Maybe you’re planning to become aMcDonald’s franchisee. Exclusivity simply means that no other McDonald’s can bebuilt within a certain radius of your restaurant. That means another franchiseecannot just move in down the block and take customers from your restaurant.

How is a Franchise Territory decided?Mapping territory to be divided among franchisees can be tricky and somefranchises just don’t get it right. However, there are several factors that go intomapping territories, including the success of the franchise. A globally successfulfranchise like McDonald’s will typically offer much smaller territories becausethey are so popular and so well-known that getting customers into the door ispretty easy. So, you may find a McDonald’s in relative close proximity anywhereyou go in the world. However, Bob’s Burger Pagoda may offer a larger territory because it isn’t aswell-known, which means a franchisee may need a larger territory to bring in asufficient amount of business.

How Do Franchise TerritoriesWork?

Page 11: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

Many franchises also use mapping programs that allow them to analyze the bestway to divide a city or even a region, taking into consideration such factors aspopulation and distance between franchises.

What questions should I ask about a Franchise? Before settling on a franchise, be sure to answer the following questions:· Are territories exclusive or non-exclusive? (Non-exclusive means anotherfranchisee can move into your area.)· How does the franchisor map the franchisees’ territories?· Is the population in your potential territory large enough to run a viablebusiness?· Will you be permitted to choose your own territory?· How close will the nearest franchisee be situated?· Will you be permitted to open another location in the future?

This is just a starting point. Write down as many questionsas you can think and research the issue of franchiseterritories before signing a contract to become afranchisee.

A franchisor – make that a good franchisor – will do much more than take yourfranchise fee, provide you with the franchise’s official rules and regulations, and simply wish you luck as you go on your merry way.A good franchisor will provide you with support to help you succeed. After all, ifyou succeed, you will make yourself money and the franchisor will earn moneythrough the royalties you pay to him.

Here are several ways your franchisor may helpyour franchise succeed:Initial TrainingYou will be expected to follow the rules and the regulations of the franchise youhave purchased. But, you need far more than a manual to read and to follow. Youneed support to help walk you through what is expected of you: Someone toexplain and to show you the accounting system, how to open and close (ifapplicable) and so on. Initial training should also be followed by ongoingtraining, as necessary. For example, if the franchise plans to add a newaccounting system, you should receive hands-on training on how to use thatsystem.

Established SystemsA good franchisor will provide his franchisees with established systems to makerunning the business smooth and efficient. Systems might include an accountingsystem, marketing system, and so on. Ask plenty of questions of the franchisor to

determine what type of systems the franchise has in place and how they benefityou.

Marketing & Advertising SupportMarketing and advertising will play a big role in whether your business succeeds.Your franchisor may provide you with marketing and advertising support. Forexample, maybe the franchisor will hold a franchise-wide contest, which will helpdrive customers to your location (and others) and to help you gain newcustomers.

24/7 Call SupportSome franchises offer 24/7 support you can call if you need assistance with theproduct(s) or service(s) you are selling. Find out if the franchisor offers a phoneline you can call when you need assistance and, if so, the hours.Don’t forget to ask the franchisor the type of support offered to franchisees soyou can determine if it is sufficient or if you need to keep looking for anotherfranchise. Make time to talk to other franchisees, if possible, to find out whatthey think of the support offered.

What is the most important support a franchisor can offeryou?

Next time you go for a walk in your neighbourhood, count the number ofrecognisable franchises you see. Maybe you pass by McDonald’s, Subway, orother well-known fast food joints or shops that would be recognisable in anypart of Ireland, or even the world, that you might travel. Each of those restaurants, shops, and other businesses are run by hard-workingfranchisees, who pay a franchise fee and ongoing royalties, to set up a franchisebusiness in an assigned territory of a particular city or town. Many consider becoming a franchisee a straightforward way to start a newbusiness. If you think buying into a franchise is a solid option for you, firstconsider whether you have what it takes to successfully run a franchise.

Are you willing to stay in one place? When you purchase a franchise, you will essentially be limited to doing businessin your specified territory. You may, of course, have the opportunity to openanother location down the road. Can you see yourself running the business infive, 10, or even 20 years? Buying into a franchise is typically a long-termcommitment.

Are you willing to make the franchise your top priority?Running a business – whether you start that business from the ground up or buyinto a franchise – requires a huge commitment of your time and your focus. Youwill likely work longer hours, especially in the beginning, and you may berequired to work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Are you willing to do that to ensure your business’s ultimate

Clocking into and out of a job every day isn’t for everyone, no matter how big thepaycheck or how promising the future. Some people are just born with theentrepreneurial spirit, a drive that pushes them to try new things and to breaknew ground. If you’ve been gifted with an entrepreneurial spirit, you probably already knowyou want to start a business. But, have you decided whether you want to startfrom scratch or to become a franchisee?Well, consider your own personality, strengths, and weaknesses when decidingwhether starting from the ground up or becoming a franchisee is the bestoption:

Are you independent? If you prefer making all of your own decisions, you’re probably better off startingyour own business from the ground up. As a franchisee, you will have to followthe rules and regulations of the franchise. You don’t have much room for doingthings your own way. If you work better with that type of structure, you may justthrive as a franchisee but struggle as a start-up entrepreneur.

Are you creative?Does creativity drive your every move? Or, do you struggle when it comes tocreating advertisements, logos, and marketing campaigns? If you fit into thelatter category, you’ll probably feel more comfortable as a franchisee. Yourfranchisor will provide you with all the marketing materials, including the logoand posters, you must use to keep in line with the franchise brand. While you canstill be creative as a franchisee, you will have to follow the franchise’s guidelines.

Should you start your ownbusiness versus becoming afranchisee?

Page 23: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

How much support do you need?A franchisor provides generous support to franchisees. After all, if you succeed, the franchisor and the franchise itself succeeds. It is in the franchisor’s bestinterest to provide you with ongoing support. On the other hand, if you don’twant someone looking over your shoulder, providing you with guidance, you’llprobably want to consider starting a business from scratch.

Are you willing to pay ongoing fees? When you become a franchisee, you are buying into a business brand that hasalready been built and that has recognition, maybe locally or maybe evenglobally. Someone else did the hard work so you will have to pay ongoing royaltyfees. So, you must consider which is more important: Having an alreadyrecognizable brand, which comes at a cost, that makes your chance of successeven greater or starting from scratch where the future depends solely on you andyour hard work.

Are you better suited to become a franchisee orto start your own business from the ground up?

Do myths about franchises have you concerned that maybe becoming afranchisee isn’t the way to go when starting a business? The good news is mythsare just that – outdated notions that have somehow become recognized as trueby a large part of the population.

Following are four of the most commonfranchise myths that simply are not true:

You should opt for a franchise with a recognizedbrand.

The Problems With AFranchise: Four CommonFranchise Myths

Page 25: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

Opting for a recognized brand doesn’t necessarily mean success. You will stillhave to log in long hours and a lot of hard work to ensure your franchisesucceeds. A franchise may have a strong brand recognition but it might not bethe best fit for you. You may find a local franchise that is just starting out – orthat is still growing – offers you more opportunity and is a better fit for yourgoals.

You cannot fail as a franchisee. One of the prevailing myths about becoming a franchisee is you cannot fail.Unfortunately, even if you become a franchisee with a world renowned brand, you can still fail. Franchisees fail every day. That famous fast food restaurant onthe corner? If the owner doesn’t work hard to cultivate business, it may be thenext victim. That’s just part of business. If you want your franchise to succeed, you must work hard to create that success. The franchisor has given you thestructure. It is your responsibility to make it happen.

Stick with what you know.Common sense dictates that you should only opt for a business in which youhave experience, right? Nope. Just another franchise myth. Just because you haveexperience in a particular area – restaurant management, for example – doesn’tmean you’re good at it or maybe you just don’t like it. Don’t limit yourself. Exploreyour options to find a franchise that best fits your interests, goals, andpersonality.

All the work has already been done for you.The franchisor has certainly done a lot of groundwork to build brand recognition,to define the target market, and to create a solid business plan. That, however, doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to clock in and out during normal businesshours. You’re still going to have to put in significant work and long hours tooversee employees, develop relationships with prospective customers in yourarea, and to build a customer base in your own territory.

Page 26: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

Entrepreneurship lures those with an independent spirit and determination: Youhave the opportunity to run your own business, to take control of your ownfuture, and to live by your own rules. But, owning a business – either as anentrepreneur starting your own business from the ground up or by becoming afranchisee – requires long hours, hard work, and a steel-like focus on ensuringsuccess. If you’re on the cusp of taking the plunge and starting a business, which option isbetter: a privately owned business or a franchise? That really all depends on yourpersonal preferences.

Privately-Owned BusinessWhen you start your own business from the ground up, you are quite literallystarting at square one. You must take your vision, detail it in a business plan, andexecute that business plan to start and to run your business. It may take weeks –or even months – from the moment you conceive your business idea to the dayyou actually open your doors.Running your own business allows you to maintain your independence and torun your business exactly the way you want. You don’t have to follow the rulesfrom a franchisor. You are your own boss. Minus all the business expenses, youwill pocket the profits your business makes. If you’re up for a good challenge, you’ll have just that as an entrepreneur. Youwill have to find a way – or hire talent – to build brand recognition and toconvince customers to choose your business over the competition.

Privately Owned BusinessVersus Franchise: Which IsBetter?

Page 27: Franchise Opportunity - Pet Sitters Ireland€¦ · Congratulations on taking the first step towards you owning your own business and changing your financial future. ... their unique

When you become a franchisee, someone else has done all the ground work. Thefranchisor has:· Carefully crafted a business plan· Developed a marketing and advertising plan· Paid for the development and production of a company-wide logo· Built brand recognition and the brand’s reputationBecause of all the groundwork the franchisor has already completed, you will beable to open your franchise much quicker and your chance of success is typicallygreater. And, you’ll never really be alone. Franchisors typically provide ongoingsupport for their franchisees and you’ll find camaraderie with other franchisees. But, it all does come at cost. In addition to paying a royalty to the franchisor, youmust agree to follow the franchisor’s business plan. You cannot, for example, justcreate a new logo and start using it. You are bound by the terms of yourfranchise agreement.Ultimately, the answer to the question – which is better: a privately ownedbusiness or a franchise – boils down to your goals and whether you wantcomplete independence or you prefer the guidance of an experienced, successfulfranchisor as you run your business.
