October 5, 2014

My Dad died 18 years ago this morning.

He was 68 years old. A healthy man most of his life, a Korean War veteran, it seemed after he retired it was one thing after another. In mid September he was transferred to St. Francis hospitalin Peoria for further tests. He already had one leg cut off below the knee.

Shortly after we arrived there one of the Sisters paid us a visit. She was kind, sincere, caring andmost of all interested in not only my Dad’s comfort but also that of my Mom, my brother and me.She had the sweetest smile and disposition that just invited us to tell her our story. Her name wasSister Mary Louise.

Even though my Dad didn't test positive for diabetes, he had all the symptoms. As a result, all thetests kept coming back with the same diagnosis, dialysis. Sister visited him everyday, and he seemedso comfortable when she was there. Often she would come back in the evening and see all of us.She would listen without judging and during times like this that's what you need.

Well, it came down to my Dad making a decision that would affect all of us. Sister knew that andshe also knew the outcome. He had decided not to go with dialysis and in looking back Sister wasprobably the first one of us to understand why. By this time in his life, he was dependent on all ofus to care for him. This decision was his and probably the last one he would ever make.

We said our thank yous and good byes to the doctors, nurses and staff. But there was one personwe had to see, Sister. Saying goodbye to her was the toughest, because she had become part of thefamily.

Shortly after my Dad went home I asked him again why he didn't take the treatment, this was hisanswer. “If I go on dialysis your mother will have to drive me to the hospital three times a weekand then take care of me for the rest of my life. I am not going to do that to her.”

After he passed, we received a special letter from Sister Mary Louise offering comfort and prayers.Mom still has that letter.

Over the years I have been to the hospital many, many times to visit family and friends. I couldn’twalk through those doors without wondering where Sister was.

Then last Saturday we were invited to the unveiling of the Rolan Johnson Christmas ornament atthe Heading Avenue Sisters of St. Francis motherhouse. I told my wife Dorothy that I hoped I mightsee Sister Mary Louise again and tell her we have never forgotten the love she gave our family.After the luncheon, I saw her again, that same smile and warmth that comforted us so many yearsago. After all these years she remembered us, too. She recalled how my Dad had a difficult decisionto make. I thanked her again and told her we will never forget what she did for our family.

Sister Anna Marie’s life stories could be reflected upon through the Franciscan Crown –the Joys of Our Lady. The Annunciation: Sister loved to reminisce about her childhood,her life as a working woman, and her teaching days, as well as tell humorous stories

about her ordinary, day to day life experiences. The Visitation: She loved to visit her family,the people at St. Joseph’s Home, Snyder Village, and her sisters in community and in her class,enjoying the special camaraderie they shared. The Birth: Sister Anna Marie rejoiced not onlyin the births of her nieces, nephews, and their children but also the joy of new life in her will-ingness to try new things. The Adoration: Sister was very affirming of people, always readywith a compliment. Likewise, she enjoyed recognition and celebrations that gave praise andglory to God, particularly, looking forward to her 60th jubilee this year. The Finding of theChild Jesus: Sister Anna Marie had a very special relationship with St. Anthony and through

his intercession, she could find anything. But what she found every day, was God’s will in allthings, even the difficulties and painful events in her life. The Resurrection: Sister had trust inGod. In prayer one day, Jesus appeared to her and assured her that all would be well when shetold her mother that she desired to give her whole life to the Lord as a sister. The Assumption:Sister Anna Marie enjoyed 88 years with us before her Lord came to bring her home. She con-cluded her life story saying, “My thanks to God for the many gifts He has given to me all ofthese years to help with His young and elderly people.”

Prayer of Saint Francis of AssisiLord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seekto be consoled as to console;to be understood as to understand;to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen
