son (Northern Oklahoma College), and 5-8 sophomore guard Emilee Dunton(Longwood University).

Red-shirt freshman Chelsey Johnson, a5-8 guard who hails from Riverside HighSchool and Greer, S.C., also joins thePatriot roster.

“We are ready and anxious to tip it off,”said Glusko. “We open against two very

good opponents in L-R and Mars Hill, sowe will see where we stand very quickly.“This year’s group wants to learn and dowell. We have brought in players whobelieve in our system and have the desireto be successful.

“Our biggest asset this year will be ourdepth. We can go 10-to-11 players deep. They have all worked hard in the pre-sea-son and the pieces are finally starting tofall into place. This group will be a morebalanced squad where everyone must‘show up’ each game and contribute – ablue-collar approach.

“We hope to play at a faster pace thisyear, and the depth aids in that area. Wealso want to create offense with our de-fense.” FMU is 63-5 in its last 68 gameswhen scoring 85 points or more.

The Francis Marion University women’sbasketball team will open its 2011-12season on Friday evening (Nov. 18)against Lenoir-Rhyne University in theBiltmore Farms/Mars Hill Classic. Thecontest will tip-off at 8 p.m. in Mars HillCollege’s 2,800-seat Stanford Arena.

FMU leads the all-time series with Lenior-Rhyne 4-1, including a 93-74 victory inHickory, N.C., in the 2009 NCAATournament’s round of 32. FrancisMarion is 27-11 in all-time season open-ers, and the Patriots have won 29 of theirlast 31 regular-season match-ups withnon-conference opponents.

Second-year FMU head coach KateGlusko welcomes back six letterwinners, including two starters, from last year’s18-10 squad that finished third in thePeach Belt Conference’s East Divisionand earned its fourth consecutive invita-tion to the NCAA Division II Tournament. However, Glusko must replace departedswing player Shannon Singleton-Bates(19.6 ppg) who finished her career as theseventh-highest scorer in FMU history, and sixth-highest in the PBC, with 1,743points.

The two returning starters are along theFMU frontline: 5-10 senior forwardSimone Trice (6.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and 5-11senior forward T.T. Belcher (5.9 ppg, 6.4rpg).

Francis Marion also returns four playersin the backcourt: 5-8 junior guardsKristen Dickerson (2.2 ppg), JasmineWilliams-Hayes (2.0 ppg) and Ana Imani(0.3 ppg) and 5-7 sophomore guard Brit-tany Christian (4.4 ppg). Of the four,Christian saw the most playing time in2010-11, including five starts. She alsoconnected on 34.5 percent of her three-point attempts as the Patriots led theconference in three-point shooting lastseason at 35 percent.

Six transfers, including three with NCAADivision I experience, join one red-shirtfreshman as newcomers on the 2011-12roster. The transfers include 5-7 seniorguard Tiara Gause (Elon University), 6-0senior forward Danielle Gibson (Charles-ton Southern University), 5-11 junior for-ward Daphne Walker (Daytona State Col-lege), 5-8 junior guard Carmella Thomp-

Playing behind Trice and Belcher in thefrontcourt will be Walker and Gibson. Both add immediate college experienceto the roster. “Daphne possesses anexcellent offensive game, runs the floorwell, and can score in a variety of ways.Danielle gives us an added reboundingpresence, can also run the floor well, and owns good back-to-the-basket of-fensive moves. Our depth at the post isthe area I am most excited about.”

Glusko pointed to Thompson as herstarting point guard. “Carmella is a truepoint player with lots of athleticism anda very high basketball IQ. She is greatat creating shots for her teammates.”

Christian and Dunton will see minutesat the shooting guard spot, with Duntonalso acting as the back-up at the point.“Brittany had a great off season. Sheis better, stronger, and more confidentheading into the 2011-12 campaign, andhas improved her ability to score off thedribble. Emilee also has a high IQ forthe game, can shoot the three, and whenshe moves to the point will give us adifferent look.”

Gause was to have been the starter atthe three-guard position, but an injuryduring the pre-season has put her sta-tus for the year in question. “Hattie andChelsey will now look to fill in this spot,”Glusko added. “Hattie is long, athletic,a good rebounder and defender, and shecan get to the rim. Chelsey is still im-proving, but is extremely athletic – aslasher-type player – and can play greatdefense.”

Francis Marion will play at St. AndrewsUniversity in Laurinburg, N.C. on Nov.22 at 5:30 p.m., before hosting threeconsecutive home contests: Nov. 23 vs.Voorhees at 4:00, Nov. 30 vs. Lander at5:30, and Dec. 3 vs. Augusta State at1:30 p.m. The Patriots were picked tofinish fifth in the Peach Belt’s annualpre-season coaches’ poll.

FMU has twenty-two 20-win seasonsin the team’s 38-year history, and thePatriots rank among the Top 10 Divi-sion II programs in all-time victories.FMU was 8-3 at home last season, 37-5 over the last three years, and has won166 of its last 209 home contests inthe Smith University Center.

Pearl Moore, women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader, is a 1979 Francis Marion University gradu-ate. Moore, a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School, played for the Patriots between1975 and 1979, and the four-time All-American scored 4,061 career points.

Moore started her collegiate career at Anderson Junior College in the fall of 1975. After one semester atAnderson (eight games and 177 points), she transferred to Francis Marion. Fortunately, the Patriots didnot open their cage season until after the first of the year, and thus Moore played the entire 1975-76Francis Marion schedule. At that time under Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)rules, a player could transfer and be eligible immediately. The 5-7 guard-forward went on to score 3,884points in a Patriot uniform. Her career point total includes the points scored at Anderson, because atthat time in women’s basketball, two- and four-year schools regularly competed against each other andall results counted.

During her junior year, she scored a then single-game record 60 points in a 114-71 victory over EasternWashington State College in the 1978 AIAW Small College National Tournament (see lower left photo). In her final collegiate game, March 10, 1979, an AIAW Small College Regional Tournament consolationgame against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she tallied 42 points to break the previousall-time record of 4,045 set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State University.

Moore averaged 30.6 points per game over her four seasons (127 games) at Francis Marion, andhelped lead head coach Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell’s program to an 85-42 record and three national tourna-ment appearances. She scored below 20 points only 18 times in her Francis Marion career, andreached the 50-point mark on three occasions. She scored 1,109 points in her junior year alone. Inaddition to her point total, recorded in an era that did not have the three-point field goal, Moore grabbed1,270 rebounds and shot 45.9 percent from the field and a then school-record 70.0 percent from thefree-throw line.

Since that time, two male players (John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson, both of David Lipscomb University) have surpassed her total, but she stillstands as the only female player to reach 4,000 career points. MiriamWalker-Samuels of Claflin College (SC) is second on the women’sscoring list with 3,855 points.

Following her career at Francis Marion, Pearl went on to play two sea-sons in the Women’s Pro Basketball League (1979-80 with the New YorkStars and 1980-81 with the St. Louis Streak), earning All-Star status in1981, and one season in Venezuela.

Moore was one of the first inductees into the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame in1992. In 1994, she was nominated by the university for induction into theNaismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and her name remains inthe nomination process. During the summer of 1996, several items fromPearl’s playing days were sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame in Spring-field, Mass., for inclusion in the Women’s Basketball Exhibit Area. In 2000, she was inducted into theSouth Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2008 became a member of the Florence Area Athletic Hall ofFame. In 2011, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
