From the President’s Desk

To our members and friends

Welcome to our production of the classic comedy Harvey. It is always difficult to present shows that have been made popular by iconic actors like James Stewart, but we think that director Greg Milton has pulled it off in great style.

Season members should have received their renewal notices in the mail by now, and we encourage all of you to sign up as soon as you can for what promises to be another great collection of shows. We have made some significant changes; one of these that affects all of you is that we are reducing the number of shows we are staging to seven. After consulting with the many volunteers who bring these shows to you, we realized that we are working them too hard.

We have asked them for the impossible, and they have delivered – again and again! However, we need to give these fine people a little more time to prepare between shows, so the schedule has been cut back and spread out. They all work so hard to ensure that our shows are the highest quality, and we have to provide an environment where they can excel without killing themselves in the process.

We are heavily into planning for our summer camp in July. We are fortunate that Showdown Stage Company is returning once more, so we will have the talents of Flip Kobler, Cindy Marcus, Dennis Poore, Domenic Bisesti and Micky Bronson in charge of the teen campers again. I expect another successful camp and another great original show for us to see at the end of it.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes (literally!) to keep our theatre running not only today, but for tomorrow as well. One of the important tasks is periodically reviewing our performance as an organization, and identifying areas that need improvement, and describing the actions that we need to take to get where we are going. Past President Sam McClelland has been doing the heavy lifting on this vital project for us, and with some help from his friends, he should complete this herculean labor in time to present it at the annual general membership meeting at the end of the season. When the meeting date is announced shortly, please plan to attend.

HARVEY A Comedy

By Mary Chase

Directed by Greg Milton

February 18-28, 2010

Director’s Notes Dearest Theatre Patrons, Firstly, let me personally thank you for supporting live theatre and thank you for your patronage! “Harvey is a story about a man who sees a big rabbit that nobody else sees, right?” Well, sort of... I was inspired to work on this show because I feel it is about humanity and relationships- a mystical microcosm of daily life that everyone can relate to. Harvey challenges social norms and forces us to look at ourselves and the way we behave toward each other. In addition, Harvey challenges us to question reality and examine what’s truly important in our lives. We get so wrapped up in ourselves sometimes forgetting to stop and smell the flowers. When we finally do, we usually find that was the one thing missing all along. So, I ask you to forget the day’s troubles, listen with fresh eyes and watch with new ears as you enjoy this modern, updated production of Harvey. Whether you see a large rabbit or not is totally up to you! ~GM

Meet the Director and Crew

Greg Milton (Director) A beloved local theatre treasure like FWP, celebrating their 80th Anniversary season… a story everyone knows… a play so awarded, loved and revered- Greg is scared silly to be making his Bay Area directorial debut!

Well, he can’t be that shy because for the last three years, Greg has been acting on Bay area stages like Gorilla Theatre, Stageworks Theatre Co., Gypsy

Productions and Gulfport Players just to name a few. You may have seen him most recently as Diva in Three Guys in Drag Selling Their Stuff, The Narrator in the The Chosen or Shelby in Laura.

Greg also earned his first speaking film credit recently as the Dummy Comic in Herschell Gordon Lewis’ latest, Grim Fairy Tale, due out in the spring of 2010.

Greg would like to thank: The entire cast! I’ve set forth a challenge and you all stepped up to it. Now go knock ‘em dead!; Samantha… you are the other half of my brain- bless you; Maria… thank you for your inspiration, insight, enthusiasm and support- you are a true friend. In dedication to my mom, Alice ‘Faye’- dreams live on!

Samantha Symon (Stage Manager) is excited to be involved in her first production at Francis Wilson Playhouse. She thanks Greg for inviting her to be part of this project, and Dianna for making her life so much easier by being so on top of everything. Samantha completed an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies with minors in Biology and Anthropology from Eckerd College, then realized that people are way more fun than trees and decided to pursue a career in stage

management. She has been making a living (mostly) stage managing in St. Petersburg, FL, and Spring Green, WI for going on two years and is hoping to begin a master’s degree in stage management in the fall.

Samantha Epps (Assistant Stage Manager) is pleased to be involved in her first production at Francis Wilson Playhouse, particularly Harvey, which was her grandfather's favorite play. She currently studies acting and voice at the Patel Conservatory, and plans to major in theater performance at USF this fall. Thanks to a great cast for all their hard work!

Jennifer was born and raised in Boston and has lived in the Tampa Bay area since 1998.

Rob Simkin (Duane Wilson) is delighted to perform once again at the Francis Wilson Playhouse in this season's production of Harvey. Acting has always been a part of his life since the age of 5. He attended the University of Maryland as a Theatre Major. He relocated to Florida and soon found his groove in the entertainment industry in 2005 where his voice over talents contributed to several episodes of the Children's Learning Series: The Great News Kids. He would also like to thank his Mother for all her support and for always taking him to Broadway Shows...hint, hint.

First Nighters Lobby Rejuvenation Project

It is not often one can share in the decorating of a theatre lobby that audiences have enjoyed for 80 years and will continue to enjoy for many years to come.

The First Nighters are a dedicated group of women who believe that a live theatre experience should be a very special occasion. Twice during each theatre season they hold a Gala Champagne Premier to benefit the Francis Wilson Playhouse.

In the past, the First Nighters with generous donations from those who come to see our shows and others raised funds that have resulted in a new and expanded air conditioning system, a new front curtain in red velvet, refurbishment of our rest rooms, lights for our dressing rooms and many other technical and aesthetic updates within our extensive building.

This year The First Nighters have celebrated the 80th Season of Francis Wilson Playhouse by pledging their fundraising toward re-decorating the Playhouse Lobby.

The First Nighters are:

Concert Series Songs that Got Away

April 10, 2010

Did you know that “Getting To Know You” from THE KING & I was originally in SOUTH PACIFIC? Or that songs from MY FAIR LADY made their way into GIGI instead? In this fun concert we’ll look at songs that were cut, revised or moved from various Broadway shows during Broadway’s Golden Age.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum

Musical Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart,

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

This riotous musical farce has been popular ever since Zero Mostel opened the show with the number “Comedy Tonight” at the start of its run of almost 1,000 performances in the early sixties. It was revived in 1996, ran for another 700 performances and all three of its Broadway openings have given the leading actor (Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers and Nathan Lane) a Best Actor Tony award. It has been a hit everywhere it has played, from the theatres of Broadway and London’s West End to community theatres all over the world. In addition to its Best Actor awards, it has also won Best Musical, Best Book, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Set in ancient Rome and based loosely on the farces of playwright Plautus (251 – 183 BCE), the show tells the bawdy story of a slave (Pseudolus) and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master (Hero) win the heart of Philia, one of the courtesans in the brothel next door. This is a marvelous and fast paced show, with terrifically funny songs, chases around the stage, unexpected arrivals, misunderstandings and all of the other ingredients of the great farces. We are delighted to welcome Director Jason Fortner back with another fabulous cast and crew.

Showdown Performing Arts will be returning this summer with their totally unique theater camp designed with and for teens. Flip Kobler, Cindy Marcus, Dennis Poore, Micky Bronson and Domenic Bisesti will return to Francis Wilson Playhouse from July 12, 2010 (Orientation) through July 31, 2010. We’ve been overwhelmed with last years kids asking and kids they have told about it asking when they will be back.

A normal schedule:

Mornings are devoted to classes. Students can choose from Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Composing, Stage Movement, Dance, Musical Theater, Stage Craft and Technical Theater. They go to three one-hour classes a day, taught by professionals who actually make their living in the entertainment industry.

Supportive adult mentoring relationships nurture trust in authority figures.

First rate original productions build their self-confidence, sense of achievement, and a passion for reading, especially the classics.

Students get hands on experience in all aspects of theater. They help design and build the sets. They help design and construct costumes. They learn to hang lights and design a lighting scheme. They design and run the sound. They stage manage. They manage the front of the house. Playwriting students have the option to write the shows for upcoming seasons.

After lunch it's into rehearsals of a full scale production that ends with performances before an audience.

Under the guidance of veteran composer Dennis Poore, students even get to write songs for the show.

High Quality performing arts classes geared toward teen issues give students a better understanding of who they are and why they matter, as well as help them discover their inner strengths and talents.

The camp emphasis is on original shows. This gives the students a chance to create something never before seen. They get a chance to breathe life into new characters, to design a set that relies on nothing but imagination.

More specific information to come later but its definite they will be back
