JOURNAL 1Font Analysis

Geometrically analyzing font gave me a better understanding as to how they are created. Each font is created based on a particular grid/system that is applied to all the letters.

JOURNAL 2Compression of event into one image

Overlaying images creates the opportunity to present material in a dynamic way. This technique was used later on in the semester as a diagram for a piece of furniture that was designed.

JOURNAL 3Stencil Pledge

This exercise although straight forward was valuable in teaching us to properly us the laser cutter to cut font.

JOURNAL 4Diagramming a Recipe

Diagramming through grasshopper can be an effective method to present a structural process. In this case the program was used to clearly show a recipe.

JOURNAL 5Grasshopper Selfie

This program breaks down images into basic geometries. A method like this one in combination with another program can create abstract and interesting images.

JOURNAL 6Economy of Line

Lines were pulled out of Rhino into Illustrator to create sketchy free hand looking digital images. This is a very useful tool to know when putting together a presentation board and showing off diagrams.

JOURNAL 7Celebrate a Subject

Photoshop offers a multitude of tools that are extremely useful when editing an image. This assignment encouraged an exploration of some of those tools along with their effects when combined together.

JOURNAL 8Collage Diagram

This exercise was a fun opportunity to play around with Photoshop layers. We were tasked to create a collage from a previous project assignment.

JOURNAL 9Revit

While learning to use the program it proved to be a struggle for a period of time. After familiarizing myself with the functions Revit proved to be an essential tool for organizing spreadsheets.

JOURNAL 10Movie Analysis

This movie was a great opportunity to realize the importance of digital timelessness. The film raised the expectations in the movie industry.

•Discuss the relevance of the monkeys and the monolith. How does this setup for the future plot? - The monolith is essentially a symbol of evolution. It is granting the species the ability to look at things in a different way allowing them to evolve. In the end of the movie when Dave enters the wormhole and becomes a fetus essentially, the monolith grants him access to evolve and save the human race.

•Discuss the use of music in the film. -The music seemed to be an important element all throughout the whole film. Depending on the scene the music had a significant impact on how it was being portrayed. During the beginning of the film when the female flight attendant was walking, the music seemed to seamlessly go together with her moon walking effect. A clear example of this was during the monkey scene. An important thing to point out is the importance of the absence of sound. Before the monkeys come in contact with the mysterious stone there is no music. When the stone appears there is a very mysterious and gloomy music playing which elevates the intensity of the scene.

•Discuss the cinematography and graphic design of the scenes. -One thing that took me by surprise from the very start was how well the graphics looked considering it was from 1968. The sound quality along with the picture quality was superb. The graphic designs for the scenes were all very complex looking and were interesting to look at. There are many scenes with little to no talking so it was important that the graphics did the talking for themselves.

•Where else is HAL seen/referenced in culture (name at least three other films or TV shows). -There is a reference in a video game called Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. A recently released movie called Intersteller had an inside joke that the robot had made. Lastly, in the movie Willy Wonka, we see a reference when they shrink the chocolate bar that appears in the TV. The monkeys inside the TV are the same ones from the scene in Space Odyssey.

•Discuss the relationship between man and machine relative to the time period. What did this frame? -Given that the movie was filmed in 1968, people of that time had a minimal idea about what technology would be like in the future. In the movie, machines appeared to have much more of a human like characteristic.

•Discuss the exploration of “intelligence” and “survival.” -The idea of intelligence and survival is seen throughout the movie. The overall message I would say is that in order to survive as a species -human or not- intelligence is a crucial element to evolving and overcoming challenges that would prohibit future existence.

•HAL's speech changes and becomes repetitive and nonsensical while Dave disconnects him. Does “he” start to sound more or less like a human? -When HAL starts to become repetitive while Dave disconnects him he starts to sound more like a human. You can sense that he starts to become more frustrated with the situation.

•What is the importance of the monoliths? -The monoliths are important because they are essentially these advanced TV screens built by extraterrestrial species. The monoliths encourage humankind to evolve and advance with the use and help of technology. At the beginning of the movie, the bone discovered by the monkey was used as a weapon and a tool.

Throughout the course it became apparent which software’s would become dominant. In this case Rhino was used on so many occasions that I have become comfortable performing a multitude of tasks on it.

PROJECT 1Web Page

The first couple of weeks it was difficult working with the website. Including process images was also a struggle during the first couple of projects. With time however Wordpress was easy to work, but lacks in some fields when uploading files.

PROJECT 2Sketch up

Although an extremely simple program to use it provides the necessary tools to quickly and effectively conceptualize an idea. Using Sketchup for the first time was a good introduction to using computer programs.

PROJECT 3Rhino 3d

Using a 3d body scan to create general dimensions was a great opportunity to use new and innovative technologies. After the modeling was done in Rhino, multiple hours were spent putting the vest by hand.

PROJECT 4iRevit

As previously stated, Rhino became a major part of this project. Modeling objects in 3d was substantially easier. However, creating a spread sheet was effect in Revit.

PROJECT 5Portfolio

By creating guidelines in Indesign it was extremely simple to work with when creating the portfolio. In the future I would enjoy getting to know more about the software and possibly quick shortcuts to producing an attractive spread.

Reflecting on where you began this semester with the digital course work, how do you feel you have grown?

Looking back from day one I can confidently say there have been many skills that have been learned. However, there were areas that received a higher level of attention. That being said, the programs that were used on a regular basis have become fairly comfortable to work with. Rhino and Photoshop have become major tools that I have used throughout the semester on multiple occasions. There is still much room to learn within all the programs. As a semester, it was successful in the sense that it introduced me to an array of tools, and familiarized me with new software.

Do you feel comfortable exploring new software that has not been covered in class here? Where would you find resources?

An important aspect that was picked up on throughout the semester was understanding that many of these programs use language that is similar in many ways. The distinguishing characteristic that ultimately makes it difficult to learn new programs is familiarizing yourself with where all the commands within the program are. This semester we have covered programs that are very different from each other. It has taught me patience, more patience, and the ability to submit my pride when understanding an aspect no longer became an option. Asking my peers, graduate teacher assistants, and professor became a valuable tool when something was not cohesively coming together.

RELATED WORKSMuseum Renovation

In this project, Rhino along with other programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign were used. It proved to be extremly helpful knowing how to use these programs together.

ABBOTT HOWITZER CANNON

CIRCULATION

Kansas Museum of History The Abbott Howitzer is an important piece of history that tells part of the story during the civil war. This new design will demonstrate to chil-dren and adults the accuracy of the cannon. There are two aspects to the new exhibit. On one side of the space the original cannon will be showcased on a platform to be better seen. Users will be able to rotate and tilt the cannon to test out its accuracy. A projected screen will show four targets that are also shown on a 2D map that the cannon rest on. On the opposite side of the cannon an inter-active game will allow children of all ages to un-derstand a figurative representation of the can-nons accuracy. This game will be followed with a scoreboard in which the top ten shooters will be on record.
